What Actually Changes Between an Accepted Manuscript and the Published Article?
An accepted manuscript has already passed an important threshold
An accepted manuscript, often abbreviated AM or AAM for author accepted manuscript, is not simply an early draft.
The National Information Standards Organization identifies the accepted manuscript as a distinct stage in the lifecycle of a journal article. Crossref similarly describes an author accepted manuscript as an accepted version that has been peer reviewed but has not yet been typeset or copyedited.
Publisher terminology is broadly consistent with this distinction, although specific definitions and policies can vary. Elsevier describes an accepted manuscript as the version accepted for publication that typically incorporates changes arising from submission, peer review, editorial assessment, and related checks. Springer Nature describes it as the version accepted after peer review but before copyediting and typesetting.
This means an accepted manuscript should not be confused with a preprint merely because both may look like ordinary word-processed documents.
Preprint
A manuscript made available before completion of the journal's formal peer-review and acceptance process.
Accepted manuscript
The manuscript accepted for publication after peer review, where applicable, but before the publisher's final production process.
The version of record is the formally published article
The version of record, commonly abbreviated VoR, is the formally published version of the article. NISO's journal article version framework distinguishes the version of record from earlier stages such as the author's original, submitted manuscript, accepted manuscript, and proof.
Crossref describes the version of record as the typeset, copyedited, and published version. Elsevier likewise describes its published journal article as the definitive final record incorporating publisher activities such as copyediting, formatting, pagination where applicable, and online enrichment.
In ordinary research practice, this is usually the version reached through the article's DOI or journal landing page.
The difference is not merely prettier formatting
It is tempting to think of the accepted manuscript as the "ugly version" and the version of record as the same text wearing its journal clothes. Sometimes the substantive differences may indeed be small. You should not assume that they always are.
Post-acceptance production can involve copyediting, typesetting, correction of errors discovered during proofing, changes to figures and tables, reference corrections, metadata additions, pagination, and other editorial or technical modifications. The extent of those changes varies among articles and publishers.
Springer Nature explicitly cautions that an accepted manuscript does not reflect post-acceptance improvements or later corrections. Crossref's versioning guidance likewise distinguishes the accepted manuscript from the version of record and from subsequent updated states.
For that reason, "accepted after peer review" does not mean "guaranteed word-for-word identical to the published article."

For understanding the main study, the accepted manuscript may often be sufficient
Suppose your purpose is to understand the research question, theoretical framework, study design, sample, analysis, findings, or discussion. Because the accepted manuscript represents the work after the journal's peer-review and acceptance process, it may contain the substantive material needed for those purposes.
This is one reason accepted manuscripts are important in repository-based access. When the publisher's version is paywalled, an authorized accepted manuscript may allow researchers to read the peer-reviewed work without requiring access to the formatted journal copy.
If you reached the manuscript while trying to find a legitimate open-access version of a paper, therefore, do not dismiss it simply because it lacks publisher formatting.
But "may be sufficient" is deliberately different from "is always equivalent." What you intend to do with the article determines how carefully you need to compare versions.
Exact quotation requires more caution
If you plan to quote a sentence word for word, the version difference becomes more important. Copyediting or author corrections during production may change wording, punctuation, terminology, or the location of the passage.
If you have access to the version of record, verify the quotation against it before submitting your manuscript. This also reduces the risk of providing a locator that exists only in the accepted manuscript.
If the version of record is genuinely inaccessible and you quote from an accepted manuscript, do not invent page numbers from the publisher version. Follow the citation style or institutional guidance applicable to the version you actually consulted.
Page numbers are particularly vulnerable to version differences
An accepted manuscript may use the author's own pagination. Once the paper is typeset, the final page numbers can be completely different. Some online publications use article numbers or electronic locators instead of conventional page ranges.
This creates an obvious problem when a citation style requires a page locator for a direct quotation. Page 14 of the accepted manuscript may have no relationship to page 427 of the published article.
Use bibliographic details associated with the published work when appropriate, but do not pretend that a locator from one manifestation of the article identifies the same location in another.
Tables and figures deserve a closer look
Researchers extracting quantitative information should be especially attentive to tables, figures, equations, and supplementary files. A production correction can alter a label, value, footnote, figure legend, or presentation in ways that matter even when the article's central argument remains unchanged.
If a particular numerical value or visual element is important to your analysis, compare it with the version of record when possible. The same applies when you are reproducing, adapting, or closely interpreting a figure or table, although reuse also raises separate copyright and licensing questions.
Supplementary material may exist only alongside the published record
The accepted manuscript you find in a repository may not include every file associated with the final article. Data supplements, appendices, reporting checklists, multimedia, additional analyses, or other supporting information may be hosted separately by the journal.
If your evaluation depends on such material, finding the accepted manuscript solves only part of the access problem. Follow the DOI to the publisher's article page and check what supplementary resources are associated with the publication, even if you cannot immediately access all of them.
The most consequential difference may happen after publication
Version awareness does not end when the version of record appears. Published research can subsequently be corrected, updated, or retracted.
Crossref emphasizes that the scholarly record can change after publication and recommends linking significant corrections, updates, and retractions to the affected work. Its versioning guidance distinguishes the original version of record from later updated states precisely because some changes can affect interpretation or credit.
An accepted manuscript deposited years earlier may contain no visible indication that the published article was subsequently corrected or retracted.
Watch Out
If a paper is important to your argument, evidence synthesis, clinical interpretation, policy recommendation, or another consequential conclusion, check the publisher record or DOI landing page for corrections, expressions of concern, retractions, or other post-publication updates. An old repository manuscript may not reveal the article's current status.
Reading one version does not mean you should cite whichever version is convenient
Two related questions are easily conflated: Which version can I read? and Which version should I cite?
If the accepted manuscript corresponds to a formally published article, the published article's bibliographic record will often be the relevant reference for identifying the work. However, citation styles, repository records, manuscript status, and the particular material you are quoting can affect how a citation should be constructed.
The safe principle is to be transparent about what you actually consulted and accurate about the bibliographic identity of the work. Do not fabricate pagination, publication details, or version information simply to make an accepted manuscript look like the publisher PDF.
Repository labels can help you identify the version
When an open copy comes from an institutional repository, inspect the repository record as well as the PDF. Metadata may explicitly identify the file as an accepted manuscript, author accepted manuscript, preprint, or published version.
The manuscript itself may also contain a statement identifying its status and linking to the version of record through a DOI.
Do not rely solely on visual appearance. A beautifully formatted PDF is not automatically the version of record, and a plain document is not automatically a preprint. Version status comes from the publication history and metadata, not typography.
