Building a Foundation Your Study Can Stand On

Build a strong research foundation by connecting your research question to theory, concepts, constructs, variables, hypotheses, and a framework that clearly explains what your study investigates.

Why This Stage Matters

Good research needs ideas that fit together.

A research question does not exist in an intellectual vacuum. Behind it are concepts, assumptions, explanations, and expected relationships that influence what researchers choose to investigate and how they interpret what they eventually observe. Making those foundations explicit gives a study greater clarity and coherence.

Theories and frameworks can help explain why something may happen, while concepts and constructs define the ideas being examined. Variables and hypotheses may translate those ideas into relationships that can be investigated, although not every research approach requires the same theoretical or analytical structure.

The challenge is to connect these elements in a way that genuinely supports the research problem. A framework should clarify what the study examines and why the proposed relationships make sense, rather than adding terminology that appears scholarly but contributes little to the investigation.
