Should You Choose a Method Because You Already Know How to Use It?

Knowing a research method well is a genuine advantage, but familiarity should not be the main reason you choose it. The method must first be capable of producing the evidence needed to answer your research question.

01 · The Question

Should You Use the Research Method You Know Best?

You need to design a study. You already know how to administer surveys, run regression models, conduct interviews, perform thematic analysis, or use some other method. Naturally, that familiar method feels like the sensible choice.

There are good reasons to value methodological expertise. A method you understand well may be easier to implement competently, troubleshoot when problems arise, and analyze appropriately. You also have to work within real constraints involving time, resources, access, ethics, and available expertise.

But familiarity answers one question: Can I use this method competently? Research design requires another: Can this method generate the evidence needed to answer my research question?

Those questions are related, but they are not interchangeable.

Methodological Expertise Matters, but Fit Comes First

In Brief

You should not choose a research method primarily because you already know how to use it. Start with the research question and the evidence needed to answer it, identify methods capable of producing that evidence, and then consider your expertise alongside feasibility, ethics, resources, and other practical constraints.

Existing expertise is a legitimate advantage when several methods could answer the question adequately. It becomes a problem when familiarity causes you to reshape the question, ignore a more suitable design, or use a method that cannot support the conclusions you want to draw.

How Methodological Fit and Researcher Expertise Should Work Together

Your Research Question Places Demands on the Method

A research method is not simply a technique for obtaining data. Different methods make different kinds of evidence available and support different kinds of inference.

A question about prevalence requires evidence that differs from a question about lived experience. A question about whether an intervention causes an outcome raises design requirements different from a question about how participants interpret that intervention. A question about change over time may require repeated observations rather than a single cross-sectional measurement.

This is why methodological guidance commonly emphasizes alignment between the research question and the methods used to investigate it. The National Academies has similarly described the choice of methods in a study as something that should be driven by the nature of the question being investigated.

Before deciding on a technique, therefore, ask what you must observe, measure, compare, interpret, manipulate, or document to answer the question credibly.

Think From Question to Evidence to Method

A useful way to approach methodological choice is to insert an often-overlooked step between the research question and the method: evidence.

Research question What exactly are you trying to find out?
Evidence needed What observations, measurements, experiences, comparisons, records, or other information would allow you to answer that question?
Methodological options Which research designs, sampling strategies, data collection methods, and analytical procedures can generate and appropriately analyze that evidence?
Feasible choice Which defensible option can you conduct competently, ethically, and with the resources available?

This sequence prevents the name of a familiar method from becoming the starting point. It also avoids another oversimplification: assuming that every research question has exactly one correct method. Often, several designs can provide useful evidence, but they may answer somewhat different versions of the question or support different strengths of inference.

Methodological Fit Is Not the Only Consideration

Saying that the research question should guide methodological choice does not mean that researchers should ignore practical reality. Method selection can also be influenced by access to participants or data, ethical requirements, available time, financial resources, disciplinary expectations, equipment, software, and researcher expertise.

SAGE's overview of methodology selection, for example, identifies the research question as a major basis for choosing a method while also recognizing opportunities and access, resource constraints, disciplinary traditions, and ethics as relevant considerations.

A theoretically ideal design that you cannot conduct ethically, adequately, or competently is not an adequate design in practice.

Methodological fit Can this method produce evidence capable of addressing the research question and supporting the intended conclusions?
Methodological feasibility Can this study actually be conducted competently and ethically with the available expertise, participants, data, time, resources, and infrastructure?

A defensible choice usually has to satisfy both. Fit without feasibility produces a study you cannot execute properly. Feasibility without fit produces a study you can execute beautifully but that may answer the wrong question.

Existing Expertise Is a Real Methodological Asset

There is nothing inherently problematic about preferring a method you know well. Expertise can improve research.

Experienced researchers may understand the assumptions of a method, recognize threats to validity or credibility, anticipate implementation problems, use appropriate analytical procedures, and know when an apparently attractive interpretation exceeds what the evidence supports. Familiarity can also make a project more feasible within limited time and resources.

Methodological expertise therefore belongs in the decision. It simply should not have veto power over methodological fit.

The Problem Begins When the Tool Starts Defining the Problem

Suppose you are highly skilled at surveys. You encounter an interesting research problem and immediately begin thinking about questionnaires, Likert-type items, sample sizes, and statistical tests. Without realizing it, you may start formulating only questions that your preferred method can conveniently answer.

This can produce what is sometimes described informally as a method-driven rather than question-driven study. The danger is not that the familiar method is necessarily wrong. The danger is that alternative ways of conceptualizing the problem may never receive serious consideration.

Research design literature explicitly cautions against reverse engineering research questions from preferred methods. A stronger approach is to clarify the problem and question first, then determine what methodological possibilities follow from them.

If you find yourself deliberately looking for a question that fits a method you have already chosen, the methodological sequence deserves closer scrutiny.

A Familiar Method Can Be Appropriate Without Being Sufficient

Sometimes your existing method addresses part of the question but not all of it.

Imagine that you want to understand why students stop using an educational technology platform. Usage logs could show when students stop using it and which features they used beforehand. A survey could measure predefined factors across many students. Interviews might reveal reasons that were not anticipated in advance.

None of those observations automatically means that one method is universally superior. They provide different forms of evidence. The relevant question is which evidence your study requires.

In some cases, a combination of methods may be justified because the research question genuinely requires complementary evidence. That does not mean mixed methods should be added merely because using more methods appears more sophisticated. Every component needs a methodological purpose.

Learning a New Method Does Not Automatically Solve the Problem Either

The opposite mistake is methodological novelty for its own sake. A new or technically impressive method is not inherently better than an established one you already know.

If a familiar method is appropriate for the question and you can justify its use, there is no methodological prize for making the project more complicated. Novelty should come from what the research contributes, not from unnecessarily exotic analytical machinery.

The relevant comparison is therefore not familiar method versus unfamiliar method. It is adequate and feasible method versus inadequate or infeasible method.

Your Choice of Research Approach Comes Before Specific Techniques

Method selection also occurs at more than one level. Researchers make decisions about the broad research approach, study design, sampling, data collection, measurement, and analysis. These choices need to work together.

Before deciding whether to use a particular technique, consider the broader research approach appropriate to what you are trying to investigate. Knowing how to run one statistical procedure, for example, does not establish that a quantitative design is appropriate. Likewise, experience conducting interviews does not establish that a qualitative approach fits every question involving people.

Sometimes the Best Solution Is Collaboration

What if the method that best fits the research question is one you cannot yet use competently?

You do not necessarily have to abandon either the question or the method. Depending on the project, you may be able to obtain training, work with a supervisor or methodological adviser, collaborate with someone who has the necessary expertise, or modify the scope to something you can execute responsibly.

The appropriate response depends partly on how much expertise the method requires and whether it can realistically be developed within the project timeline. Reading a tutorial the night before the analysis is rarely the methodological apprenticeship reviewers have in mind.

Watch Out

Do not claim to use a specialized methodology simply because you have adopted one of its techniques. Many methodologies carry assumptions, design principles, sampling implications, analytical procedures, and standards for interpretation that extend beyond a single data collection tool.

04 · A Practical Example

When the Method You Know Does Not Quite Answer the Question

Hypothetical Example

A Researcher Who Is Very Comfortable With Surveys

Suppose a graduate student has extensive experience designing online surveys and analyzing quantitative data. She notices that some university instructors enthusiastically adopt generative AI tools while others resist them.

Initial instinct Because she already knows survey research, she proposes distributing a questionnaire measuring attitudes toward generative AI and comparing scores across instructors.
Actual question After refining the problem, she realizes that what interests her most is how instructors make sense of the professional and ethical tensions they experience when deciding whether to use generative AI in their teaching.
Evidence needed Predetermined attitude scores might describe selected beliefs, but they may provide limited access to how instructors interpret competing responsibilities, explain their decisions, and construct meaning around unfamiliar situations.
Design decision She considers qualitative approaches capable of examining those experiences in depth. Because she has limited qualitative research experience, she obtains appropriate supervision and training rather than automatically returning to a survey simply because it is familiar.

Now change the research question. Suppose she instead asks whether particular attitudes toward generative AI are associated with instructors' reported frequency of adoption across a large university population. A well-designed survey may now be entirely defensible, and her existing expertise becomes an advantage.

The researcher did not become more or less competent between the two scenarios. What changed was the question and, consequently, the evidence required to answer it.

Misconception

You Should Always Use the Method You Know Best

Expertise matters, but familiarity alone does not establish methodological appropriateness. First determine whether the method can generate evidence relevant to the research question. Existing expertise becomes especially valuable when choosing among multiple defensible options.

Misconception

You Should Ignore Your Skills and Choose the Theoretically Perfect Method

This goes too far in the opposite direction. Researcher competence is part of feasibility. A sophisticated design implemented poorly may be less defensible than a simpler design that genuinely answers the question and can be executed rigorously. Training, supervision, collaboration, or a carefully justified adjustment to the project may be necessary.

Misconception

There Is One Correct Method for Every Research Question

Many questions can be investigated through more than one defensible design. Different methods may illuminate different aspects of a phenomenon or support different inferences. Method selection therefore involves reasoned justification rather than matching every question to a single predetermined technique.

Misconception

A More Advanced Method Produces Better Research

Technical complexity is not a measure of methodological quality. A sophisticated analytical procedure cannot compensate for poor alignment between the question, data, design, and inference. Use the level of methodological complexity the research problem actually requires.

Misconception

Changing the Research Question to Match Your Skills Is Always Wrong

Research questions often change during study development, and feasibility is a legitimate reason to refine scope. The concern arises when the substantive problem is distorted merely to preserve a preferred technique. If a revised question remains worthwhile, coherent, and honestly reflects what the project can investigate, refinement can be entirely reasonable.

How to Choose Between a Familiar Method and a Better-Fitting Alternative

When evaluating a method, separate two issues that are easy to collapse: appropriateness and competence. Ask first whether the method is capable of addressing the research question. Then ask whether you and your research team can use it adequately within the actual constraints of the study.

A simple decision framework

If the method you already know fits the question and is feasible
Use it confidently when you can justify the design. Familiarity is an advantage, not something you need to avoid.
If several methods could adequately answer the question
Your expertise, resources, access, disciplinary context, and practical constraints can legitimately help determine which option is most appropriate.
If your familiar method addresses only part of the question
Clarify whether the question should be narrowed or whether additional evidence and methods are genuinely necessary.
If your familiar method cannot provide the evidence the question requires
Consider another method, appropriate training, methodological consultation, collaboration, or a defensible revision of the research question.
If an unfamiliar method appears impressive but adds nothing necessary
Do not adopt it merely for novelty or perceived sophistication.

A good proposal should therefore be able to justify a method without saying, in effect, “I chose this because I know how to do it.” Your expertise may help establish feasibility, but the methodological rationale should explain why the design is appropriate for answering the research question.

Before Choosing a Research Method You Already Know

Before committing to the method, check:
State the research question without mentioning your preferred method.
Identify the evidence you would need to answer that question convincingly.
Determine whether your familiar method can actually generate and analyze that evidence.
Consider at least the plausible methodological alternatives rather than treating familiarity as automatic justification.
Check the assumptions, limitations, and kinds of inference supported by each serious option.
Evaluate feasibility, including expertise, participant or data access, ethics, time, resources, software, equipment, and supervision.
If a better-fitting method exceeds your expertise, determine whether training, consultation, or collaboration is realistically available.
Make sure you can justify the chosen method in terms of the research question rather than personal preference alone.

Frequently Asked Questions About Choosing Research Methods

Is it wrong to choose a research method because I am good at it?

No. Methodological expertise is an advantage when the method is appropriate for the research question. The problem arises when familiarity becomes the primary justification despite a mismatch between the method and the evidence the question requires.

What should come first, the research question or the method?

In conventional question-driven research design, the research problem and question should guide the methodological choice. In practice, design is often iterative, so questions may be refined as researchers confront theoretical, methodological, ethical, or feasibility constraints. That is different from inventing a question simply to justify a predetermined method.

What if I do not know how to use the method my research question requires?

Consider whether you can obtain sufficient training, supervision, methodological consultation, or collaboration to conduct the method competently. If that is not realistic, you may need to revise the scope or question rather than conduct a method you cannot implement responsibly.

Should a student choose a simpler method for a thesis?

A manageable method can be entirely appropriate if it produces evidence capable of answering a worthwhile research question. Simplicity itself is not a weakness. The problem is simplifying the design until it can no longer support the intended conclusions.

Do I need to learn a new method to make my research more original?

No. Methodological novelty and research originality are different issues. An established method may be entirely appropriate for investigating an original question, population, context, relationship, mechanism, or phenomenon.

Can practical constraints influence my choice of method?

Yes. Time, access, resources, ethics, available expertise, and other constraints are legitimate considerations. They should be considered alongside methodological fit rather than used to justify a method that cannot meaningfully address the research question.

Is mixed methods the solution when I cannot decide between qualitative and quantitative research?

Not by default. Mixed methods is appropriate when integrating qualitative and quantitative evidence serves the research purpose and the integration itself is justified. Uncertainty about which method to choose is not sufficient methodological justification for using both.

Choose for Fit, Then Use Expertise to Your Advantage

The Bottom Line

Knowing a research method well is a legitimate advantage, but you should first establish that the method can produce the evidence needed to answer your research question.

Once you have identified defensible methodological options, expertise can appropriately influence the final choice alongside ethics, feasibility, resources, access, and other constraints. If the method you know best does not fit, the better response may be to learn, collaborate, seek methodological support, or revise the project's scope rather than force the question into the tool you happen to have.
