Should Every Part of Your Conceptual Framework Be Examined in the Study?

A conceptual framework can be broader than the empirical study it informs, but that does not make every omission harmless. Learn when examining only part of a framework is defensible and when the framework promises more than the study investigates.

01 · The Question

If Your Framework Shows Five Constructs, Must Your Study Investigate All Five?

Your conceptual framework contains several constructs, relationships, pathways, contextual influences, or theoretical propositions. Your research questions, however, focus on only part of that picture.

Is that automatically a problem?

Not necessarily. Frameworks and empirical studies do not always have identical boundaries. A framework may provide broader intellectual context for a deliberately narrower investigation. Researchers may test only particular theoretical propositions, concentrate on one pathway, or use a framework primarily as an interpretive lens rather than attempt to examine every element empirically.

But there is a limit. If the framework visually or textually presents components as though they are part of what the study investigates, while the research design provides no way to examine them, readers may reasonably see a mismatch.

02 · The Short Answer

You Do Not Necessarily Have to Examine Everything, but You Must Define the Framework's Role and Boundaries

In Brief

No universal rule requires every concept, construct, or relationship contained in a broader conceptual or theoretical framework to be empirically examined in a single study. You may focus on selected components when that scope is theoretically defensible, clearly stated, and aligned with the research question and design.

The problem arises when unexamined elements are presented as though the study tests, measures, explains, or provides evidence about them. Your framework may be broader than your empirical investigation, but readers should be able to tell where the framework ends and what the study actually examines.

03 · What You Need to Know

Separate the Framework's Intellectual Scope From the Study's Empirical Scope

A conceptual framework can perform several functions. It may help establish why the study matters, define constructs, identify presumed relationships, inform the research question, justify aspects of the design, shape data collection, guide analysis, or provide a lens for interpreting findings. Contemporary methodological accounts explicitly describe frameworks as capable of influencing multiple stages of research rather than functioning solely as diagrams of variables to be tested.

That broader role explains why the framework and the empirical analysis do not always need to be identical.

A framework can contain more than the study directly tests

Consider a theory that proposes six constructs and several relationships among them. Your research question may concern only one theoretically important relationship.

Studying that relationship does not automatically require testing the entire theory.

Researchers routinely investigate limited theoretical propositions, particular mechanisms, specific populations, or defined contextual conditions. A single study rarely needs to settle every question implied by a sufficiently rich theory.

The critical requirement is scope clarity. State which components are being examined and why those components are relevant to the research problem and question.

“Included in the framework” can mean different things

A component can appear in a framework for several reasons, and those reasons create different empirical obligations.

This is why counting boxes in a framework and comparing them with columns in a dataset provides a poor test of alignment.

The stronger the empirical claim, the stronger the obligation to examine the component

Suppose your diagram contains an arrow from institutional support to technology adoption. What does that arrow mean?

If it means only that previous literature suggests institutional context may matter, and your study explicitly limits itself to individual-level determinants, you can explain that boundary.

If you describe the arrow as one of the relationships your study will test, however, the situation changes. You now need evidence and analysis capable of evaluating the relationship.

Visual elements are claims, or at least invitations to infer claims. Boxes, arrows, directions, groupings, and labels communicate assumptions about what belongs together. Researchers should therefore avoid drawing relationships that the study neither examines nor clearly identifies as contextual or outside scope.

Distinguish applying a framework from testing a framework

This distinction resolves much of the confusion.

Applying a framework Using concepts or theoretical ideas to frame the question, inform data collection, organize analysis, or interpret findings.
Testing a framework or theoretical proposition Generating evidence specifically intended to evaluate whether proposed constructs or relationships are empirically supported.

A study that applies a framework does not necessarily need to operationalize and test every component. A study claiming to test a complete model assumes a substantially greater empirical burden.

Varpio and colleagues emphasize that theory, theoretical frameworks, and conceptual frameworks can be positioned differently in deductive and inductive approaches. The way a framework is used should therefore be judged in relation to the study's epistemological and methodological logic, not against a single template.

Qualitative frameworks require a different alignment test

For some qualitative studies, asking whether every framework component has been “measured” is the wrong question altogether.

A theoretical framework may function as a sensitizing or interpretive lens. Its concepts can influence what researchers notice, how interview questions are developed, how evidence is organized, or how patterns are interpreted. Other approaches may intentionally delay substantial theoretical engagement or allow theory to emerge differently during analysis.

The appropriate question is therefore whether the framework's use is compatible with the qualitative methodology and whether the researcher accurately describes what was and was not informed by prior theory.

Frameworks can shape both deductive and inductive analytical approaches, but the manner of their use differs.

Selective use becomes problematic when omitted components change the theory's meaning

Not every subset of a theory remains theoretically coherent.

Imagine a theory in which the effect of one construct is explicitly conditional on another. Removing the conditioning construct and presenting the remaining relationship as the theory's prediction may misrepresent the original theoretical argument.

Similarly, a framework may distinguish several dimensions of a construct that should not be collapsed without justification. Researchers who select only convenient portions should therefore return to original theoretical sources and ask whether their partial use preserves the meaning of the framework.

Watch Out

Do not silently remove theoretically important components simply because you cannot measure them. Feasibility can justify narrowing a study, but it does not rewrite the theory. State what you are examining, what you are not examining, and how that limitation affects the interpretation of your findings.

Unexamined components should not reappear as unsupported explanations

A common alignment problem emerges late in the study.

A researcher excludes institutional culture from data collection because it falls outside the scope of the project. After finding an unexpected result, the discussion then states that institutional culture probably explains the pattern as though the study demonstrated that explanation.

The framework may make institutional culture a theoretically plausible interpretation. That does not turn an unmeasured explanation into an empirical finding.

The distinction should remain explicit:

  • the study found something;
  • the framework offers one possible interpretation;
  • the study did not directly examine that explanation.

This is where framework alignment becomes a matter of inferential discipline, not simply proposal organization.

Your study-specific framework can be narrower than the source theory

If you draw a study-specific conceptual framework from a broader theory, one solution is to represent only the components relevant to the present inquiry while explaining their origin and the rationale for selecting them.

This can make the framework more faithful to what the study actually does.

Conceptual frameworks are often study-specific and may integrate theory, previous literature, context, and the researcher's conceptual argument rather than merely reproduce a source theory wholesale.

However, distinguish clearly between the original theory and your adapted conceptualization. A study-specific framework derived from selected theoretical components should not be presented as though it were an unchanged representation of the original theory.

The same principle works in reverse: empirical scope can reveal a missing framework component

Sometimes the study examines more than the framework acknowledges.

If your analysis investigates moderators, mediators, confounders, contextual factors, or substantive variables that have no conceptual rationale, the issue may not be that the study is too broad. The framework may be incomplete.

This is why the question of whether analytical variables belong somewhere in the conceptual framework cannot be separated completely from the reverse question addressed here.

Alignment works in both directions. The framework should not promise relationships the study ignores, and the study should not make substantive claims that its conceptual foundation never anticipated or justified.

04 · A Practical Example

Using Only Part of a Broader Framework Without Pretending to Test the Whole Thing

Hypothetical Example

A study of instructors' intention to adopt an educational technology

Suppose a broader theoretical model contains constructs related to perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, social influence, facilitating conditions, behavioral intention, and actual use. A researcher has access only to instructors who have not yet adopted the technology and wants to understand their intention to use it.

Research boundary Actual use cannot yet be meaningfully examined because participants have not begun using the technology.
Selected focus The researcher examines perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and behavioral intention because these constructs correspond to the specific research question.
Framework presentation The study clearly identifies this as a focused application of selected theoretical relationships rather than claiming to test the complete source model.
Analysis Only the relationships specified by the research questions and hypotheses are evaluated.
Interpretation The researcher limits conclusions to intention and does not claim that the study demonstrates which factors determine actual adoption behavior.

Nothing inherently requires this study to test every component of the broader model. Its narrower scope can be legitimate because the question, evidence, analysis, and claims all correspond to the selected conceptual territory.

Misalignment would arise if the researcher displayed the entire model as “the conceptual framework of the study,” described all of its relationships as being investigated, collected data for only three constructs, and then drew conclusions about the unexamined parts.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Common Misunderstandings About How Much of a Framework You Must Examine

Misconception

If It Appears in the Diagram, Must It Be Measured?

Not in every methodological tradition. A framework can contain contextual, interpretive, or theoretical concepts that are not operationalized as measured variables. However, the diagram should make their role intelligible rather than inviting readers to assume that every displayed relationship is empirically tested.

Misconception

If I Use a Theory, Do I Have to Test the Entire Theory?

No. A study may examine selected propositions or use theory to inform interpretation rather than attempt a comprehensive test. The selected use should be theoretically defensible and described accurately.

Misconception

Can I Simply Delete Anything That Is Difficult to Measure?

Not without considering what the omission does to the conceptual argument. A difficult-to-measure component may be theoretically essential to the relationship you want to study. Narrowing the project can be reasonable, but feasibility alone does not establish conceptual coherence.

Misconception

Does a Bigger Framework Make the Study More Theoretically Sophisticated?

No. A large framework can make the study less coherent when many components have no role in the question, design, evidence, analysis, or interpretation. Theoretical sophistication comes from defensible reasoning, not the number of boxes and arrows.

Misconception

Can I Use Unexamined Framework Components to Explain My Findings?

You may discuss them as theoretically plausible interpretations when appropriate, but distinguish interpretation from empirical evidence. If the study did not examine a proposed mechanism or contextual influence, the findings do not establish that it caused or explained the observed result.

06 · What This Means for You

Draw a Boundary Around What the Study Actually Examines

When a framework is broader than your project, make the boundary explicit rather than hoping readers will infer it.

A simple decision framework

If a component is central to the research question
Ensure the design provides appropriate evidence for examining it.
If a relationship is presented as a hypothesis
Provide an analysis capable of evaluating that relationship.
If a component provides context or interpretation only
State that role rather than presenting it as an empirically tested part of the study.
If you use only part of an established theory
Explain why that subset is appropriate and check whether excluding other components changes the theoretical meaning.
If a component cannot be examined with your planned evidence
Remove it from the study's empirical claims, revise the design, or redefine its role in the framework.

This boundary should remain consistent when you move from framework to methods and eventually to conclusions. If the research question requires evidence your study cannot produce, the problem is no longer simply a framework issue. You need to examine whether the planned evidence can actually answer the research question.

Thinking this way also prevents an alignment matrix from becoming a clerical exercise. A useful alignment matrix should expose the boundary between what the framework proposes and what the study can genuinely examine.

Does the Scope of Your Framework Match What the Study Claims to Do?

Before finalizing your conceptual framework, check:
Identify which framework components are directly addressed by the research questions.
Distinguish components you intend to examine empirically from those providing context or interpretation.
Check whether every relationship presented as a tested proposition has corresponding evidence and analysis.
If using only part of a broader theory, verify that the selected portion remains conceptually defensible.
Make the boundaries of the study explicit rather than leaving readers to infer which framework elements are in scope.
Avoid using unexamined components later as though the study produced empirical evidence about them.
Check whether your study-specific diagram accurately represents what you actually investigate rather than reproducing an entire source theory unnecessarily.

Frequently Asked Questions About Framework Scope

Can I use only part of an established theory?

Yes, when the selected components are relevant to your question and their use remains theoretically defensible. Explain the selection and avoid presenting your partial model as though it were the complete original theory.

Should every arrow in a conceptual framework be tested?

If an arrow is presented as a relationship the study intends to test, you should have evidence and analysis capable of evaluating it. If an arrow represents contextual or theoretical background instead, make that role clear so readers do not infer a test that never occurs.

Can my conceptual framework be broader than my research questions?

Yes. A framework can provide broader theoretical or contextual understanding than a particular study can empirically investigate. The boundary becomes problematic only when the study implies that it examines or supports claims about components outside its actual scope.

Do qualitative studies need to examine every concept in a framework?

Not necessarily. In qualitative inquiry, a framework may function as a sensitizing, interpretive, or organizing lens rather than as a set of variables to be measured. Its use should be compatible with the methodology and described transparently.

What if I cannot collect data for one component of the framework?

Determine whether that component is essential to the question or theoretical claim. You may need to narrow the study, modify the framework, revise the question, or acknowledge that the relevant relationship cannot be examined. Simply leaving the component in the framework while ignoring it empirically may create misleading expectations.

Can an unmeasured framework component still be discussed?

Yes, when it provides relevant theoretical context or a plausible interpretation. Clearly distinguish what your evidence demonstrates from what the framework suggests as a possible explanation.

Should I redraw an established theoretical model to show only the parts I use?

You can create a study-specific conceptual representation when appropriate, but identify it as an adaptation or application rather than implying that your diagram is the complete original model. Cite the source theory and explain what was selected, omitted, or modified.

09 · The Bottom Line

Your Study Does Not Have to Examine Everything Your Framework Can Explain

The Bottom Line

You do not necessarily need to examine every component of a broader conceptual or theoretical framework, but the part you choose to examine must be clearly defined, theoretically defensible, and aligned with your research questions, evidence, methods, and claims.

A framework may provide a larger intellectual map than one study can cover. The problem begins when the map suggests that you traveled somewhere your evidence never actually went.
