Is a Comparison Group Just Another Name for a Control Group?
You have two groups in your study. One receives the intervention you want to evaluate. The other does not. What should you call the second group?
A control group? A comparison group? A comparator?
You will encounter all three terms in research literature, and their usage is not perfectly standardized. In some contexts, “control group” and “comparison group” are treated as synonyms. In others, researchers use “control group” more specifically for a reference condition in an experiment and “comparison group” more broadly for a group against which another group is compared, particularly when allocation was not randomized.
The terminology matters because it can communicate features of the design. But the label alone tells you much less than researchers sometimes assume.
03 · What You Need to Know
The Difference Is More About Design Than Vocabulary
There is no universal terminology that cleanly separates “control group” from “comparison group” across every discipline and study design.
For example, the U.S. National Institute on Aging defines a control group in a clinical trial as the group assigned to a comparison intervention. Other methodological sources explicitly note that study arms used as comparators may be called control groups in some publications and comparison groups in others.
That variation is why interpreting the design from the label alone can be risky.
What researchers usually mean by a control group
A control group provides a reference against which the outcomes of another group, often an experimental or intervention group, are evaluated.
Depending on the study, participants in the control condition might receive no intervention, usual practice, a placebo or sham condition, an active alternative, or another specified comparator.
The word “control” therefore does not necessarily mean that participants receive nothing. Nor does it necessarily mean that the group consists of untreated people.
What matters is the contrast. If a new intervention is compared with usual practice, for example, the estimated difference addresses intervention versus usual practice. If it is compared with placebo, the scientific contrast is different.
What researchers usually mean by a comparison group
Comparison group is often used as a broader and somewhat more neutral term. It identifies a group whose outcomes are compared with those of another group without necessarily implying a particular assignment mechanism.
This terminology is especially common in quasi-experimental and other nonrandomized evaluations. For example, the What Works Clearinghouse describes quasi-experimental designs as forming intervention and comparison groups using methods other than random assignment.
A comparison group might consist of students at schools that did not implement a program, patients who received another treatment, employees who were not exposed to a policy, or participants selected because they resemble those who received an intervention.
Calling them a comparison group does not establish that they are actually comparable in the characteristics that matter.
Control group
A reference group or condition against which an experimental, treatment, exposure, or intervention condition is evaluated. The precise usage varies across fields.
Comparison group
A broader term for a group used to provide a relevant contrast, often used when groups were formed without random assignment or when “control” would imply more than the design warrants.
Neither term tells you whether participants were randomized
This is one of the most important points.
A study may contain a control group and use random assignment. Another study may describe a control group even though participants entered the conditions nonrandomly. Conversely, researchers may call the second arm of a randomized trial a comparison group.
You therefore cannot infer randomization from the word “control.”
If allocation matters to your interpretation, look for an explicit description of how participants, classrooms, schools, hospitals, communities, or other units were assigned. Random assignment is a design procedure, not a synonym for having a control group.
A control group does not have to be inactive
Consider a trial comparing a new educational program with the institution's existing program. Students in both conditions receive instruction. The reference condition can still function as the control or comparator.
This matters because “control” is sometimes mistakenly interpreted as “nothing happened to these participants.”

The NIH expert panel on behavioral trials recommends thinking explicitly about the comparator because comparator selection affects the research question a trial can answer. The generic term “comparator” can sometimes avoid an unnecessary terminological dispute and keep attention on the substantive contrast.
The distinction becomes especially important in quasi-experimental research
Suppose one university introduces a new first-year mentoring program while another university continues its existing student-support system.
The researcher compares retention rates between students at the two universities.
Calling the second university the “control group” might suggest a degree of experimental control that the design does not possess. The institutions may already differ in admissions, student demographics, resources, academic programs, support services, location, or other characteristics.
“Comparison group” may communicate the design more cautiously, but changing the label does not solve the methodological problem either.
The important issue is whether the comparison group is appropriate for the intended inference.
Similarity at baseline becomes particularly important without random assignment
When intervention and comparison groups are formed nonrandomly, researchers should expect the possibility that they differ before the intervention begins.
In education research, for example, the What Works Clearinghouse evaluates baseline equivalence for quasi-experimental designs because pre-existing differences between intervention and comparison groups can bias estimates of intervention effects.
This does not mean two groups must be literally identical. It means that differences relevant to the outcome require careful attention.
If one group enters the study with substantially higher prior achievement, greater resources, different demographics, or another prognostically important characteristic, an outcome difference after the intervention may partly reflect those baseline differences.
The best terminology is usually the terminology that accurately describes the design
If you are writing your own methods section, do not rely on a single label to communicate everything about the comparator.
Instead of writing only:
“The study included an intervention group and a control group.”
describe what actually happened:
“Schools were randomly assigned to implement the intervention or continue usual practice.”
Or, for a nonrandomized study:
“Students participating in the program were compared with eligible students from schools that had not implemented the program.”
Readers can then evaluate the design rather than reverse-engineering it from terminology.
04 · A Practical Example
The Same Two Groups Can Look Very Different Once You Know How They Were Formed
Hypothetical Example
Evaluating an AI literacy program
A researcher wants to determine whether an AI literacy program improves university students' ability to evaluate AI-generated information. Two groups of students are measured at the end of the semester.
Scenario A: Randomized conditions Eligible students are randomly assigned to the AI literacy program or the institution's existing digital-literacy instruction. The second condition can reasonably be described as a control or comparator condition, provided the researcher specifies what it received.
Scenario B: Naturally occurring groups Students from University A receive the program, while students from University B are selected for comparison because their university does not offer it. No random assignment occurs. Calling University B a “control” does not make the groups equivalent.
What must now be investigated The researcher needs to determine whether the universities and students differ before the intervention on characteristics related to the outcome. The credibility of the comparison depends partly on how well these differences are addressed.
What the terminology should communicate For Scenario B, “comparison group” may be the clearer description because the group provides a nonrandomized comparison. More importantly, the methods should state exactly how participants were selected and how comparability was assessed.
The statistical comparison could look similar in both studies. The design logic is not.
This is precisely why the words “control group” cannot substitute for an explanation of how the comparator was constructed.
06 · What This Means for You
Describe the Comparator Before You Decide What to Call It
If you are designing a study, begin with the contrast your research question requires. Then determine how the comparator will be formed and what participants in that condition will experience.
The label can come afterward.
A simple decision framework
If participants are randomly assigned to an experimental intervention and a specified reference condition
Control group, control condition, or comparator may all be appropriate, depending on disciplinary convention. Describe the actual condition and random assignment explicitly.
If groups already exist or are formed without random assignment
Comparison group is often the more transparent term, while the methods should explain selection and potential baseline differences.
If both groups receive substantive interventions
Consider terms such as active comparator or name the interventions directly so readers know what is being compared.
If disciplinary terminology is inconsistent
Define your usage and describe the design rather than expecting the terminology alone to communicate it.
Watch Out
Do not upgrade a nonrandomized comparison into an experimental control simply through wording. Calling participants “controls” does not erase selection processes, confounding, or pre-existing differences between groups.
Before worrying too much about terminology, also confirm that your study actually needs a control or comparison group. A precisely named comparator still adds little if the research question never required the contrast.

Before Labeling a Group as the Control or Comparison Group
Before describing your study groups, check:
Can you state exactly what condition each group receives or experiences?
Have you explained how participants or other units entered each group?
If assignment was randomized, have you stated that explicitly rather than expecting the word “control” to imply it?
If assignment was not randomized, have you considered whether “comparison group” more accurately communicates the design?
Have you assessed relevant pre-intervention differences between nonrandomized groups?
Does the comparator represent the alternative condition required by your research question?
Have you avoided assuming that the group label itself establishes comparability or causal identification?
