Can Describing Something Carefully Count as Research Without Explaining Why It Happens?

Research does not always need to explain why something happens. Careful description can constitute a meaningful research contribution when it systematically establishes what exists, occurs, varies, or is experienced.

01 · The Question

Is Description Alone Enough for Research?

Suppose a study documents how university students use generative AI for coursework, how common particular practices are, and how those practices differ across groups. The study produces a detailed picture of what is happening, but it does not determine why students behave that way.

Is that still research?

It can be. Research questions do not all seek the same kind of answer. Some ask what exists, what happens, how frequently something occurs, how something varies, or how people experience a phenomenon. Others ask why it happens or what causes it. Confusing these purposes can lead researchers to undervalue descriptive work or, just as problematically, make explanatory claims their evidence cannot support.

Careful Description Can Be a Substantive Research Contribution

Yes. A study can count as research when its purpose is to describe a phenomenon systematically and rigorously, even if it does not explain why the phenomenon occurs.

The description must still address a meaningful question and use methods appropriate to the claims being made. Describing what is happening and explaining why it happens are different research objectives, and evidence sufficient for the first may not be sufficient for the second.

03 · What You Need to Know

What Descriptive Research Actually Contributes

Description answers genuine research questions

Research is sometimes portrayed as a progression toward increasingly sophisticated explanations: first observe something, then determine relationships, and ultimately establish causes. That progression can be useful in some contexts, but it should not be mistaken for a hierarchy in which description is automatically inferior research.

A descriptive question can be important in its own right. Researchers may need to establish the characteristics of a population, document the prevalence of a condition, identify patterns of behavior, characterize an emerging practice, record changes over time, map variation across settings, or understand how participants describe their experiences.

These are questions about the world that can require systematic evidence to answer. The fact that they ask what rather than why does not remove them from research.

Describing something is not the same as casually observing it

The phrase "descriptive research" can sound deceptively simple. Everyone describes things. Researchers, however, need to establish how observations were generated, what was included or excluded, how concepts were operationalized or interpreted, and why the resulting account warrants confidence.

In quantitative descriptive research, this may involve defining a target population, selecting an appropriate sample, using valid measurements, and reporting distributions or frequencies accurately. In qualitative research, description may involve systematic data collection and analysis designed to represent experiences, practices, settings, or meanings with appropriate depth and transparency.

The particular standards vary by methodology and discipline. What matters is that the inquiry displays the systematic and rigorous characteristics appropriate to the research question. A collection of impressions does not become rigorous descriptive research merely because it contains many observations.

Description and explanation answer different questions

Descriptive question Asks what exists, what is occurring, how something is distributed, what characteristics it has, or how it is experienced.
Explanatory question Asks why or how a phenomenon occurs and seeks evidence about mechanisms, processes, or causal relationships that might account for it.

Imagine finding that students who use a particular learning resource more frequently also tend to earn higher grades. Describing that pattern is one claim. Concluding that the resource caused the higher grades is another.

Students who use the resource frequently might already be more motivated, have stronger prior knowledge, spend more time studying, or differ in other consequential ways. An observed association can therefore be descriptively accurate while leaving its explanation unresolved.

This is one reason researchers should resist turning every descriptive result into a causal story. The strength of a study is partly determined by whether its conclusions remain within what its design and evidence can support.

Descriptive research can use quantitative or qualitative evidence

Description is not synonymous with a particular method. Surveys can describe attitudes or behaviors. Cross-sectional studies can estimate characteristics of a population at a particular time. Longitudinal studies can describe how patterns change. Researchers may analyze records or existing datasets. Interviews, observations, documents, and other qualitative materials can also support rich descriptions of experiences and social phenomena.

Nor does descriptive research need to be experimental. The U.S. National Institutes of Health distinguishes observational studies from studies involving researcher-assigned interventions and recognizes prospective and retrospective forms of observational inquiry. This is one illustration of the broader point that legitimate research does not depend on manipulating an independent variable.

The relevant methodological question is therefore not whether the study looks experimental or mathematically sophisticated. It is whether the chosen evidence and analytical procedures can answer the descriptive question credibly.

Description may be necessary before explanation is possible

When a phenomenon is new, changing, poorly documented, or inadequately conceptualized, researchers may not yet know enough to formulate plausible explanatory questions. Prematurely asking "Why does this happen?" assumes that researchers already know sufficiently well what "this" is.

Consider the rapid emergence of a new technology in education. Before researchers can adequately explain its effects or evaluate interventions around it, they may need reliable evidence about who uses it, how it is used, under what circumstances, for which activities, and how practices vary among contexts.

Good description can therefore provide an empirical foundation for subsequent explanation. It may reveal patterns that require explanation, identify categories that earlier theories overlooked, or show that a supposedly uniform phenomenon is actually heterogeneous.

Not every description makes a meaningful contribution

Accepting descriptive research does not mean that every descriptive project is automatically valuable. A study can be meticulously conducted yet contribute little if it merely reproduces information already well established without a defensible reason for doing so.

The researcher still needs to ask what is not adequately known, why a new description is needed, and how the resulting evidence changes or strengthens existing understanding. Novelty might arise from a previously unstudied phenomenon, population, setting, period, measurement, source of evidence, or pattern. Context alone, however, should not be treated mechanically as novelty.

This returns to the broader question of what can legitimately count as new knowledge. The contribution should be justified rather than assumed simply because new data were collected.

Description can be valuable without solving the phenomenon it documents

A descriptive study may reveal a problem without proposing or testing its solution. For example, documenting substantial inequalities in access to educational technology can be important even if the study does not determine which policy would reduce those inequalities.

This is consistent with the broader principle that research can improve understanding without immediately solving a practical problem. The appropriate contribution depends on the question the study was designed to answer.

04 · A Practical Example

Describing Generative AI Use Without Claiming to Explain It

Hypothetical Example

How are university students actually using generative AI?

Suppose researchers want to document how students at several universities use generative AI for academic work. They collect data about the types of tasks for which students report using these tools, frequency of use, disclosure practices, and differences across selected student characteristics.

Question What patterns characterize students' reported use of generative AI for academic work?
Evidence The researchers use an appropriately designed sampling and data-collection strategy and clearly define what they mean by different forms of AI use.
Finding They identify how reported practices are distributed and where meaningful differences or patterns appear.
Interpretation The findings describe the phenomenon but do not, by themselves, establish why particular students use AI differently or what caused those differences.

That limitation does not make the study defective. If the research question was descriptive, the study can answer it successfully without identifying causes.

The problem would arise if the researchers moved from "students in group A reported this practice more frequently" to "membership in group A causes this practice" without evidence capable of supporting that inference. Good descriptive research is strengthened, not weakened, by being precise about where description ends.

Common Misconceptions About Descriptive Research

Misconception

Descriptive research is just collecting facts

Rigorous description requires decisions about concepts, sampling or case selection, measurement or interpretation, data quality, analysis, and the scope of conclusions. Poor choices at any of these stages can produce a misleading description even when no causal claim is attempted.

Misconception

A study is weak if it cannot explain why the pattern occurs

That criticism is appropriate only when explanation was necessary to answer the research question. A well-designed descriptive study should be evaluated according to whether it credibly describes the phenomenon it set out to investigate.

Misconception

Finding an association explains the phenomenon

An association can establish that variables vary together under the conditions studied, but the observed relationship may have multiple explanations. Researchers should not convert descriptive or associational evidence into causal claims that the design cannot support.

Misconception

Descriptive research has to be quantitative

No. Researchers can systematically describe frequencies and distributions numerically, but qualitative approaches can also provide rigorous descriptions of experiences, practices, meanings, interactions, and contexts. The appropriate approach depends on what needs to be described.

Misconception

Adding complicated statistics makes a descriptive study more scientific

Analytical complexity should follow the research question rather than serve as evidence of rigor by itself. If straightforward analyses answer the question adequately, additional statistical sophistication can obscure rather than improve the contribution.

06 · What This Means for You

Decide Whether You Need Description or Explanation

Before choosing a design, identify what kind of claim you actually need to make. If you do not yet know the basic characteristics, distribution, experiences, or patterns of the phenomenon, description may be exactly the appropriate objective.

If your real question is why the phenomenon occurs, however, collecting descriptive evidence and then attaching a causal interpretation afterward will not solve the design problem. You need evidence and methods appropriate to the explanatory claim.

A simple decision framework

If you need to know what exists, occurs, varies, or is experienced
A descriptive research question may be appropriate.
If the phenomenon itself is poorly documented
Establishing a credible description may be a necessary contribution before attempting explanation.
If you need to know why something happens
Use a design and evidence capable of addressing explanatory mechanisms or competing explanations.
If your evidence supports description but not explanation
Keep the conclusion descriptive and identify explanation as a question for further investigation.

There is no methodological prize for answering a more ambitious question badly. A carefully bounded descriptive claim can be considerably more informative than an impressive-sounding causal conclusion that the evidence cannot sustain. Peer reviewers have been known to notice the difference.

Before Conducting a Descriptive Study

Before finalizing your descriptive research design, check:
Can I state precisely what phenomenon, population, setting, experience, or pattern I intend to describe?
Is there a meaningful reason this description is needed given what is already known?
Does my sampling, case selection, or source selection support the scope of the description I intend to make?
Are the concepts, categories, measurements, or interpretive procedures sufficiently clear for the research approach I am using?
Do my analytical methods actually answer the descriptive question rather than merely add unnecessary complexity?
Have I separated what my evidence describes from explanations that would require additional evidence?
Are my conclusions limited to the population, cases, context, period, and evidence that the study can reasonably support?

Questions About Descriptive Research

What is descriptive research?

Descriptive research systematically investigates what exists, occurs, varies, or is experienced without necessarily attempting to establish why it happens. Its precise forms and methodological requirements differ across disciplines and research traditions.

Does descriptive research need a hypothesis?

Not necessarily. A descriptive study may be organized around research questions rather than hypotheses, particularly when its objective is to characterize a phenomenon rather than test a predicted relationship. Whether hypotheses are appropriate depends on the research purpose and methodological tradition.

Can descriptive research show relationships between variables?

Descriptive or observational data can reveal patterns and associations, depending on the design and analysis. An observed association, however, should not automatically be interpreted as evidence that one variable caused the other.

Is descriptive research the same as observational research?

Not exactly. Observational describes a broad feature of study design in which researchers do not assign the exposure or intervention of interest. Observational studies can include descriptive as well as analytic investigations, so the terms should not automatically be treated as synonyms.

Can descriptive research use existing data?

Yes. Researchers may conduct descriptive investigations using data collected specifically for the study or appropriate existing datasets. Research does not necessarily require collecting entirely new data.

Can a descriptive study lead to explanatory research later?

Yes. Description can identify patterns, categories, variation, and unanswered questions that motivate subsequent explanatory studies. This does not make descriptive research merely preliminary; its description may itself remain an important contribution.

Description Does Not Need to Pretend to Be Explanation

The Bottom Line

Carefully describing something can constitute legitimate research even when the study does not explain why the phenomenon occurs.

The key is alignment: the research question must warrant description, the methods must produce credible descriptive evidence, and the conclusions must remain within what that evidence supports. Explanation is valuable when the question requires it, but it is not a compulsory ingredient of every research study.
