Would You Know What Evidence Counts as an Answer to the Question?

Before choosing a questionnaire, dataset, interview protocol, or experiment, you should be able to describe what evidence would actually answer the research question. That specification creates the bridge between the question and the study design.

01 · The Question

If the Study Were Finished Tomorrow, What Would Convince You That the Question Had Been Answered?

Researchers often move quickly from a research question to a method. A question about students leads to a survey. A question about experiences leads to interviews. A question involving two variables leads to correlation or regression. Once an instrument or analytical technique has been identified, the study can feel methodologically concrete.

One step may still be missing.

What would the evidence actually have to show for you to answer the research question?

That question is more fundamental than choosing a method. A questionnaire can generate responses, an interview can generate transcripts, and a database can provide thousands of observations. None of those facts establishes that the resulting information will constitute evidence for the particular answer your research question requires.

02 · The Short Answer

Specify the Evidence Before You Decide How to Collect It

In Brief

You know what evidence counts as an answer when you can state what must be observed, measured, documented, compared, reported, or otherwise established for the research question to be answered, without first naming the instrument or method you plan to use.

The required evidence depends on the kind of question being asked. Questions about prevalence, experiences, behavior, relationships, differences, change, mechanisms, and causal effects create different evidentiary obligations, so the evidence specification should precede the final choice of data source and design.

03 · What You Need to Know

Translate the Research Question Into an Evidence Requirement

A research question is not simply a sentence describing an interesting topic. It creates an evidentiary obligation. If the question asks how common something is, the study needs evidence capable of supporting an appropriate estimate. If it asks about experience, it needs evidence that represents participants' experiences. If it asks whether variables are related, the relevant variables need to be represented within a design capable of examining that relationship. If it asks about causation, the overall design must support a causal inference rather than merely document covariation.

Research-question guidance emphasizes that the question should shape the study design and identify the information needed for an answer. FINER similarly treats feasibility as requiring an ability to investigate the question with adequate participants, expertise, time, resources, and manageable scope.

Do Not Answer “What Evidence?” With the Name of a Method

Suppose the question is: “How do doctoral students experience the use of generative AI during dissertation writing?”

“I will conduct interviews” does not yet specify the evidence. Interviews are a means of generating evidence. The evidentiary requirement might instead be articulated as: accounts from doctoral students describing how they use generative AI during dissertation work, how they interpret that use, and the meanings, benefits, difficulties, or tensions they associate with the experience.

Once the requirement is clear, interviews may indeed be a defensible method. But now the method has been selected because it can generate the evidence rather than because interviews seemed customary for the topic.

Start With the Main Intellectual Task in the Question

Different question forms imply different evidentiary tasks.

If the question asks... The evidence must help establish... Possible evidence forms
How common or frequent is something? Occurrence or prevalence in an appropriately defined population Counts, records, observations, or appropriately sampled responses
What do people perceive or experience? Participants' perspectives, meanings, perceptions, or experiences Accounts, narratives, responses, observations, or other appropriate qualitative or quantitative evidence
What do people actually do? Behavior, actions, practices, or events Observation, records, digital traces, logs, or suitably designed self-report when justified
Are two variables related? Appropriate representations of both variables and their observed relationship Paired measurements, records, observations, or other relevant data
Do groups or conditions differ? Comparable evidence from the relevant groups or conditions Consistently measured outcomes, observations, records, or assessments
How does something change? The relevant phenomenon at appropriate points or periods Repeated measurements, longitudinal records, repeated accounts, or other temporally structured evidence
Does X cause Y? The causal contrast between relevant exposure or intervention conditions Evidence generated within a design and assumptions capable of supporting causal inference

These are broad categories rather than prescriptions. The appropriate evidence depends on the precise construct, population, context, design, and intended inference.

Separate the Phenomenon From Its Indicator

Suppose the research question asks about student engagement. A learning-management-system login count may be available. Is that the evidence the question needs?

Perhaps, if the question specifically concerns platform access behavior. But if “engagement” refers to cognitive investment, emotional involvement, active participation, or a multidimensional construct, login frequency may represent only a limited behavioral trace.

This is why evidence specification comes before instrument selection. You first identify the phenomenon the question requires you to represent, then evaluate whether the proposed indicator actually represents it.

If that connection is uncertain, examine whether the variable can actually be measured in a defensible way.

Distinguish Evidence of Perception From Evidence of the Phenomenon Being Perceived

Suppose students strongly agree with the statement, “Using generative AI improves my learning.” That is evidence about students' perceptions of AI and learning.

It is not, by itself, evidence that learning actually improved.

This distinction recurs across research. Employees' perceptions that remote work increases productivity are evidence about perceived productivity effects. Researchers' beliefs that a policy improves research quality are evidence about their beliefs. Participants' confidence in their own competence is evidence about self-assessed competence.

Perceptions may be exactly what the question seeks. Problems arise when evidence about perceptions is silently used to answer a question about performance, behavior, effectiveness, or causation.

Evidence of Association Is Not Automatically Evidence of Causation

If students who use AI more frequently have higher grades, the observed relationship is evidence of an association under the study's conditions. Whether it supports a causal conclusion depends on substantially more.

A causal question asks about what would happen under alternative exposure or intervention conditions. The design must therefore address the relevant causal contrast and assumptions rather than simply demonstrate that X and Y covary.

If the evidence specification requires an effect, check whether the research question contains a causal commitment that the design must be capable of supporting.

Questions About Change Need Evidence of Change

If the question asks how students' critical thinking develops over a degree program, measuring different first-year and fourth-year students at one moment is not the same as observing how the same individuals develop over time.

A cross-sectional comparison may still answer an important question about differences between cohorts. It should not quietly be treated as direct evidence of individual developmental change.

Evidence should correspond to the temporal claim being made.

Mechanism Questions Need Evidence About the Proposed Process

Suppose an experiment establishes that an instructional strategy improves performance. The next question asks, “How does the strategy produce that improvement?”

Knowing that an effect exists does not by itself reveal the mechanism. The study needs evidence about the intermediate process or processes proposed to connect the intervention to the outcome.

Mechanisms may be investigated through mediating variables, process observations, qualitative evidence, experimental manipulation, temporal data, or other approaches depending on the theoretical problem. The essential point is that a mechanism cannot be established merely by redescribing the outcome.

Comparative Questions Need Evidence That Is Actually Comparable

Suppose the question asks whether students at two universities differ in academic performance. Both institutions provide GPA data. At first glance, the evidence requirement appears satisfied.

If the institutions use substantially different grading systems, assessment structures, or grade distributions, the numerical values may not have sufficiently comparable meanings. The problem is not the absence of data but whether the evidence supports the intended comparison.

That is why comparative questions should also be checked for whether they rely on a comparison whose resulting difference can actually be interpreted.

Evidence Must Come From the Right Source

Ask who or what is in a position to provide the evidence.

If the question concerns students' experiences, students are an obvious source. If it concerns institutional policy, official documents and decision-makers may be more relevant. If it concerns actual platform behavior, system logs may provide evidence unavailable from memory alone.

No source is inherently superior. The source should be appropriate to the claim.

Sometimes Several Sources Are Needed

Some questions cannot be represented adequately by one source. A study of how a new learning technology is implemented might need policy documents, teacher accounts, student experiences, and classroom observations if each addresses a distinct part of the implementation process.

Using several sources should follow an evidentiary rationale rather than a desire to make the study appear more sophisticated. Three weak proxies do not automatically become one strong measure simply because they are triangulated.

The Evidence Requirement Also Sets the Limits of the Answer

Suppose the best available evidence allows you to estimate an association but not a causal effect. That does not make the evidence worthless. It tells you what answer is defensible.

Research questions and claims should remain proportionate to the evidence. When the question demands substantially more than the study can produce, you may need to strengthen the design or revise the question rather than hoping that analysis will close the gap.

This becomes especially important when the question requires evidence the proposed study could never produce.

04 · A Practical Example

Write an Evidence Specification Before Choosing the Instrument

Hypothetical Example

Does generative AI improve students' research-writing ability?

A researcher proposes the question: “Does the use of generative AI feedback improve undergraduate students' research-writing ability?” The initial plan is to distribute a questionnaire asking students whether AI feedback helps their writing.

State what the question asks The question concerns improvement in research-writing ability, not students' opinions about whether improvement occurred.
Specify the outcome evidence The study therefore needs a defensible representation of research-writing ability and evidence capable of showing the relevant difference or change in that ability.
Specify the comparison Because “improve” is causal language, the researcher must define improvement relative to an appropriate alternative condition and use a design capable of supporting that interpretation.
Evaluate the proposed questionnaire Students' questionnaire responses can provide evidence about perceived usefulness or perceived improvement, but they do not by themselves establish improvement in writing performance.
Choose evidence before method Once the researcher specifies what observable writing performance and comparison would constitute evidence, an appropriate assessment, scoring process, study design, and supporting data can be selected.

The questionnaire was not inherently a poor method. It was simply evidence for a different question.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Common Mistakes When Deciding What Counts as Evidence

Misconception

If You Have Data, You Have Evidence for the Question

Data become evidence for a claim only through a defensible connection to what the question asks. A dataset can contain abundant information about the general topic while omitting the information necessary for the intended answer.

Misconception

The Instrument Determines What the Variable Means

The construct should be defined before the instrument is selected. An available measure can operationalize a concept, but it should not silently redefine the research question around whatever happens to be easiest to measure.

Misconception

Participants' Reports Are Direct Evidence of Everything They Describe

Self-report can be highly appropriate for perceptions, experiences, attitudes, intentions, and some behaviors. Reports about an outcome or causal effect are not automatically equivalent to direct evidence that the outcome changed or the effect occurred.

Misconception

More Data Automatically Mean Stronger Evidence

More observations can improve precision and breadth, but quantity cannot compensate for a fundamental mismatch between the information collected and the phenomenon or inference the question requires.

Misconception

A Significant Result Means the Question Has Been Answered

Statistical significance addresses a particular statistical hypothesis under specified assumptions. Whether the research question has been answered depends on whether the evidence represents the relevant constructs and supports the substantive inference being made.

Misconception

You Can Decide What Counts as Evidence After Seeing the Results

Exploratory analysis has a legitimate place in research, but redefining the evidentiary target around whichever variables produce interesting findings can detach the conclusions from the original question. Important evidence requirements should be specified before analysis whenever the design permits.

06 · What This Means for You

Write One Sentence Beginning With “To Answer This Question, I Need Evidence Of...”

Before selecting an instrument, dataset, sample, or analytical procedure, complete that sentence. Avoid methodological vocabulary initially. Describe the phenomenon, relationship, difference, experience, process, change, or effect that would have to be evidenced.

Then identify where that evidence could come from and what observations could represent it. Only after those decisions should you select the method capable of generating the required information.

A simple decision framework

If the question concerns perceptions, experiences, meanings, or beliefs
Identify evidence that appropriately represents participants' subjective perspectives.
If the question concerns behavior or performance
Determine what observable behavior, performance, records, or other evidence can represent it credibly.
If the question concerns a difference or relationship
Ensure the relevant variables or outcomes are represented appropriately and comparably.
If the question concerns change
Require evidence with a temporal structure capable of representing the change being claimed.
If the question concerns a causal effect
Require a design and assumptions capable of supporting the relevant causal contrast rather than simple covariation.
If the available evidence answers only a narrower question
Strengthen the evidence or narrow the question rather than stretching the interpretation.
Watch Out

“I have a validated questionnaire for that” is not yet an evidence specification. First establish what the question requires you to know; then determine whether the questionnaire actually provides evidence for that knowledge.

07 · A Quick Checklist

Specify What Would Count as an Answer Before Collecting Data

Before choosing the method, check:
State in plain language what the research question requires you to establish.
Define the important constructs, behaviors, experiences, relationships, processes, or outcomes in the question.
Identify what observable, reportable, or documentary evidence would represent each important concept.
Identify who, what, or which records can legitimately provide the required evidence.
Distinguish evidence about perceptions from evidence about behavior, performance, outcomes, or causal effects when those differ.
Check whether comparative evidence is measured in a sufficiently comparable way across groups or conditions.
Ensure the time structure of the evidence matches claims about change, development, sequence, or long-term outcomes.
Confirm that the proposed design can support the type and strength of inference the question requires.
Revise the question if the strongest conclusion supported by the available evidence would answer a materially different question.
08 · Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About Evidence and Research Questions

What does “evidence” mean in a research study?

Evidence is the empirical information used to support an answer to the research question. Depending on the study, it may include measurements, observations, participant accounts, documents, records, performances, artifacts, digital traces, or other systematically generated or obtained information.

Is data the same as evidence?

Not quite. Data are recorded observations or information. They function as evidence for a particular claim when there is a defensible connection between what was recorded and what the researcher is trying to establish.

Should I choose my research method before deciding what evidence I need?

Usually, the evidentiary requirement should guide the method. In practice, question and design may develop iteratively, but beginning with a preferred method can encourage researchers to ask only what that method conveniently produces rather than what the substantive question requires.

Can a questionnaire provide evidence of actual behavior?

It can provide self-reported behavioral information, which may be appropriate depending on the question and measurement quality. Whether self-report is sufficient depends on factors such as recall, sensitivity, the behavior being studied, and the level of inference required.

Do qualitative studies use evidence in the same sense?

Yes, although the form and logic of evidence differ across methodological traditions. Interviews, observations, documents, field notes, artifacts, and other materials can provide empirical evidence for qualitative questions when generated, analyzed, and interpreted according to an appropriate methodological approach.

What if several kinds of evidence could answer my question?

That is common. Compare how directly each source represents the phenomenon, what limitations it introduces, whether different sources address different dimensions, and whether combining them serves a clear evidentiary purpose.

What should I do if the ideal evidence is impossible to obtain?

Determine what the available alternative can legitimately establish. You may use a defensible proxy, narrow the intended inference, redesign the study, or revise the research question. Do not quietly substitute weaker evidence while preserving a claim it cannot support.

You Should Know What Would Count as an Answer Before You Decide How to Find It

The Bottom Line

Before designing the study, you should be able to state what must be observed, measured, documented, compared, reported, or otherwise established for the research question to be answered convincingly.

Use that evidence specification to choose the participants, data sources, instruments, design, and analysis. If the evidence you can realistically obtain supports only a different or narrower answer, revise the study or the question rather than asking the data to make a claim they cannot sustain.
