Can an Objective Be Exploratory Rather Than Measurable in the Quantitative Sense?

A research objective can be exploratory without being measurable in the quantitative sense. It should still clearly identify what the study seeks to explore and generate evidence through which that objective can be meaningfully addressed.

01 · The Question

Can “To Explore” Really Be a Proper Research Objective?

Suppose your objective is:

To explore how university students experience the use of generative AI during academic writing.

There is no numerical target. The objective does not say how much, how many, or whether one variable predicts another. It does not even promise that the study will find a particular set of themes.

Does that make it insufficiently measurable?

No. The concern comes from treating measurable as though it were synonymous with quantifiable. Some research objectives concern prevalence, differences, associations, or effects that can be represented numerically. Others concern experiences, meanings, processes, practices, mechanisms, or poorly understood phenomena that may require exploratory inquiry.

The objective still needs to be clear and researchable. What changes is the kind of evidence through which it will be addressed.

02 · The Short Answer

An Objective Can Be Exploratory and Still Be Rigorous

In Brief

Yes. A research objective can legitimately be exploratory rather than measurable in the quantitative sense, provided it clearly identifies what phenomenon, experience, process, meaning, or issue the study intends to investigate and can be addressed through appropriate evidence and analysis.

Exploratory does not mean vague or methodologically unconstrained. The objective should still be sufficiently focused to guide the study, aligned with the research question and methodology, and framed so that readers can determine whether the investigation actually addressed it.

03 · What You Need to Know

Researchability Does Not Require Numerical Measurement

Quantitative Measurement Is Only One Way of Generating Evidence

Some objectives naturally involve numerical quantities:

To estimate the prevalence of weekly generative AI use for academic writing among undergraduate students.

To compare academic writing self-efficacy between students with and without formal AI training.

To examine the association between AI literacy and verification practices.

These objectives can be operationalized through variables and quantitative analyses.

Now consider:

To explore how doctoral students experience the use of generative AI during dissertation writing.

This objective calls for a different form of evidence. Depending on the methodology, that evidence might come from interviews, observations, documents, diaries, focus groups, or other sources, followed by an appropriate qualitative or interpretive analysis.

The absence of a numerical measure does not imply the absence of systematic inquiry.

Exploratory Is Not the Opposite of Specific

A common mistake is to assume that exploratory research must begin with deliberately broad objectives.

Compare:

Too vague: To explore artificial intelligence in education.

More focused: To explore how undergraduate students describe the role of generative AI in revising academic writing.

More contextually bounded: To explore how first-year undergraduate students describe their decisions to accept, revise, or reject AI-generated suggestions during academic writing.

All three use explore. Their usefulness differs because the latter statements make the phenomenon and scope increasingly clear.

An exploratory objective can therefore be specific enough to guide the study without prespecifying the findings it must produce.

Exploratory Objectives Should Preserve Openness Where Openness Matters

There is also a danger in making an exploratory objective artificially precise.

Suppose researchers genuinely do not yet know which concerns shape students' decisions to verify AI-generated information. An objective such as:

To explore how students decide whether and how to verify AI-generated information used in academic writing.

allows relevant patterns to emerge through the investigation.

By contrast:

To determine whether accuracy, convenience, instructor expectations, academic integrity, and time pressure explain students' verification decisions.

prespecifies a set of explanatory factors. That may be appropriate for a different study, but it is no longer the same open-ended inquiry.

Specificity should define the phenomenon, not necessarily predetermine its explanation.

Exploratory Objectives Are Often Appropriate When Existing Knowledge Is Limited

Exploratory objectives can be particularly useful when researchers are investigating a poorly characterized phenomenon, seeking to understand how participants interpret an experience, examining processes whose important dimensions are not yet established, or developing concepts and hypotheses for subsequent investigation.

They may also appear within mixed-methods studies alongside quantitative objectives.

For example, a study might quantitatively estimate how frequently students use generative AI and qualitatively explore why students choose particular forms of use. The two objectives answer different aspects of the same broader research problem.

Exploratory Does Not Necessarily Mean Qualitative

Exploratory and qualitative are related concepts, but they are not synonyms.

Exploratory analysis can also occur with quantitative data. Researchers may investigate patterns, distributions, associations, clusters, candidate predictors, or other features without treating the analyses as prespecified confirmatory tests.

Likewise, not every qualitative study is merely exploratory. Qualitative research can be theoretically informed, explanatory, evaluative, comparative, or otherwise directed toward more specific analytical purposes.

Exploratory Describes the purpose or inferential role of investigating a phenomenon when relevant patterns, explanations, or relationships are not fully prespecified.
Qualitative Refers broadly to approaches that work with non-numerical forms of evidence and interpretive or qualitative analytical traditions.

Neither term determines the other automatically.

An Exploratory Objective Still Needs an Evidentiary Route

“Exploratory” should not become a refuge for objectives that cannot be evaluated.

Ask:

What evidence would allow me to explore this phenomenon meaningfully?

If the objective concerns students' experiences, the study needs access to evidence capable of representing those experiences. If it concerns how decisions unfold, the design needs evidence relevant to decision processes. If it concerns institutional practices, interviewing only students may leave important aspects inaccessible.

The methodological question is not “Where is the number?” It is “Can these data meaningfully address what the objective says will be explored?”

The Findings Need Not Be Known in Advance

An exploratory objective should identify what is being investigated without specifying what the study is required to discover.

Suppose the objective is:

To explore faculty members' experiences implementing institutional policies on generative AI in assessment.

The study might reveal consistent experiences, substantial disagreement, unexpected tensions, context-specific practices, or dimensions that were absent from the initial conceptualization.

Those outcomes can all address the objective.

This connects to a broader principle: every substantive objective should normally lead to identifiable findings or another research output, but the objective does not prescribe what those findings must be.

“To Explore” Is Not Automatically Better Than “To Understand”

Researchers sometimes replace understand with explore simply because they have been told that explore is an approved research verb.

That substitution does not necessarily improve the objective.

To explore student experiences.

is still vague.

To explore how first-generation university students experience the use of generative AI when developing confidence as academic writers.

provides substantially more direction.

The discussion about whether “to know,” “to understand,” and “to determine” are appropriate objective formulations therefore comes back to the same principle: the whole statement matters more than the verb in isolation.

Exploratory Objectives Can Be Assessable Without Being Quantified

At the end of an exploratory study, researchers should still be able to ask whether the stated phenomenon was actually investigated, whether relevant evidence was collected, whether the analytical procedure was appropriate, and whether interpretations are supported by that evidence.

This is a broader and more useful interpretation of assessability than insisting that every objective contain a numerical threshold.

Watch Out

Do not use “exploratory” to excuse an objective whose phenomenon, population, context, or analytical purpose is undefined. Openness to findings is methodologically different from uncertainty about what study you are conducting.

Do Not Quietly Convert Exploratory Findings Into Confirmatory Claims

Exploratory inquiry can generate important patterns and hypotheses. However, evidence discovered through an open-ended search should not automatically be presented as though the study had been designed in advance to test that exact claim.

This distinction is especially important when exploratory quantitative analyses involve many possible associations or when qualitative findings motivate broader claims beyond the evidence examined.

The exploratory status of the objective should inform how strongly the resulting findings are interpreted and what subsequent research may be needed.

04 · A Practical Example

An Exploratory Objective Can Be Focused Without Becoming Quantitative

Hypothetical Example

How Students Decide Whether to Trust AI-Generated Information

Researchers notice that students use generative AI during academic writing, but little is known in their context about how students decide whether AI-generated information should be trusted, verified, revised, or rejected.

Too broad To explore generative AI among university students.
Better focused To explore undergraduate students' practices for evaluating AI-generated information used in academic writing.
More clearly process-oriented To explore how undergraduate students decide whether and how to verify AI-generated information before incorporating it into academic writing.
Possible evidence Participant accounts, examples of verification decisions, stimulated-recall discussions, writing-process records, or other evidence appropriate to the selected qualitative design.
Possible finding A contextualized account of verification practices, decision processes, tensions, and variations supported by the collected evidence.

Nothing in this objective requires researchers to count the decisions or convert participants' experiences into numerical scores. Yet the objective is not unbounded. Readers can identify the participants, phenomenon, activity, and intellectual purpose of the investigation.

That is what makes the objective researchable.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Common Misunderstandings About Exploratory Objectives

Misconception

Every Research Objective Must Produce a Number

Research can generate many forms of evidence. Qualitative interpretations, descriptions of processes, conceptual models, developed frameworks, and other outputs may address legitimate objectives without reducing the phenomenon to a numerical measurement.

Misconception

“To Explore” Is Automatically a Vague Objective

The verb does not determine specificity. “To explore AI” is vague; “to explore how doctoral students evaluate AI-generated references during dissertation writing” is considerably more focused.

Misconception

Exploratory Means You Do Not Need a Clear Research Question

Exploratory research still requires a coherent inquiry. The question may be open-ended, but the study needs a defined phenomenon and methodological logic. Otherwise, exploration becomes an indiscriminate search for anything interesting in the data.

Misconception

Exploratory Objectives Are Only for Qualitative Studies

Quantitative studies can include exploratory analyses and objectives, while qualitative studies can pursue explanatory, evaluative, or comparative purposes. Exploratory describes the role of the inquiry rather than automatically determining the form of data.

Misconception

An Exploratory Objective Can Be Reinterpreted as Confirmatory Once an Interesting Pattern Appears

An interesting exploratory finding may justify further investigation, but discovering a pattern does not retroactively make it a prespecified confirmatory test. Preserve the distinction when reporting and interpreting the evidence.

06 · What This Means for You

Make the Boundary Clear Even When the Answer Remains Open

A strong exploratory objective defines the territory of inquiry without dictating what must be found there.

A simple exploratory-objective framework

If the phenomenon is poorly understood and the relevant dimensions are not yet well established
An exploratory objective may be appropriate.
If the objective concerns experiences, meanings, practices, or processes
Define whose experiences or practices, in relation to what phenomenon and context.
If adding predetermined variables would close down a genuinely open inquiry
Preserve appropriate openness rather than forcing quantitative-style operationalization.
If you cannot identify what evidence would meaningfully address the objective
The objective probably needs further clarification.
If exploratory analysis produces an unexpected pattern
Report and interpret it as exploratory evidence rather than silently presenting it as a prespecified confirmatory finding.

Finally, check whether the objective remains achievable with the design and evidence available. Exploratory research permits openness about what will be found, not indifference about how the research will be conducted.

Is Your Exploratory Objective Researchable?

Before finalizing an exploratory objective, check:
Is the phenomenon, experience, process, practice, or issue being explored clearly identified?
Is the relevant population, unit, or context clear where it materially defines the inquiry?
Does the objective preserve appropriate openness without becoming vague?
Can the proposed data provide meaningful evidence about what the objective seeks to explore?
Is the planned analysis appropriate for the type of evidence being generated?
Can readers eventually determine how the findings address the objective even without a numerical measure?
Have you avoided prespecifying findings merely to make the objective appear more measurable?
Will exploratory findings be reported with an appropriate level of evidentiary caution?

Frequently Asked Questions About Exploratory Objectives

Is “to explore” a valid research objective?

Yes. It is appropriate when exploration accurately represents the purpose of the inquiry. The complete objective should still identify what is being explored and, where relevant, the population and context.

Does an exploratory objective have to be measurable?

It should be assessable in the sense that researchers can determine whether appropriate evidence was collected and analyzed to address it. It does not necessarily need a numerical measure.

Can quantitative research have exploratory objectives?

Yes. Quantitative data can be used to explore patterns, associations, candidate predictors, distributions, or other features without treating every analysis as a prespecified confirmatory test.

Can a mixed-methods study combine measurable and exploratory objectives?

Yes. One objective might estimate a quantitative pattern while another explores how participants understand or experience that pattern. The objectives should contribute coherently to the broader study and align with the respective methods.

Is an exploratory objective supposed to be broad?

Not necessarily. It can be narrowly focused on a particular phenomenon, population, process, or context while remaining open about what patterns or explanations will emerge.

Can I use “to understand” instead of “to explore”?

Potentially, particularly when understanding accurately reflects the epistemic purpose of the study. However, the complete objective should make the intended inquiry sufficiently clear. Replacing one verb with another does not by itself solve vagueness.

How do I know whether an exploratory objective was achieved?

Ask whether the study collected appropriate evidence about the stated phenomenon, analyzed it using a defensible approach, and produced findings or interpretations that meaningfully address the objective. Achievement does not require discovering a particular pattern in advance.

Exploratory Does Not Mean Unmeasurable, and Unquantified Does Not Mean Unrigorous

The Bottom Line

A research objective can legitimately be exploratory rather than measurable in the quantitative sense, as long as it clearly defines what will be investigated and can be addressed through appropriate evidence and analysis.

Do not force an exploratory question into numerical language merely to make the objective look measurable. Define the phenomenon and boundaries clearly, preserve openness where the inquiry requires it, and make sure the methodology provides a credible way to investigate what the objective promises.
