You found an excellent review, but what has been published since then?
A strong systematic review, scoping review, or other major evidence synthesis can save you considerable orientation work. It may already identify the major concepts, terminology, studies, disagreements, and gaps in a research area.
But even a recently published review has a stopping point. Its authors searched the literature on particular dates, screened what they found, completed the analysis, wrote the manuscript, went through peer review, and eventually published it. New research may have appeared during that interval or afterward.
If you want the current evidence, the review is therefore not necessarily the end of your search. It can become the starting point for the next one.

How to extend a major review into the newer literature
The publication date is not where the review's evidence necessarily ends
Suppose you find a systematic review published in 2025. It is tempting to search for studies published from 2026 onward. That can leave a substantial gap.
The authors may have completed their final database searches in 2023 or 2024. Studies appearing after that search would not ordinarily have been captured by those searches, even though some were published before the review itself appeared.
PRISMA-S, the reporting extension for literature searches in systematic reviews, recommends reporting when each search strategy was last run. This information allows readers to judge the currency of the search and helps later researchers determine the point from which an update can begin.
Review publication date
When the completed review became publicly available.
Last search date
When the authors last searched a particular information source for studies that could enter the review.
If your purpose is to locate research the review could not have retrieved, the second date is usually the more useful boundary.
First, find the review's last search date
Look in the methods section, abstract, supplementary materials, search-strategy appendix, or protocol for wording such as “searched through,” “last searched,” “searches were conducted,” or “search updated on.”
Do not assume that every database was searched on exactly the same day. PRISMA-S recommends reporting the date of the last search for each search strategy because information sources may have been searched at different times.
Also distinguish the search date from the date range covered by the review. A statement such as “studies published from 2000 to 2024 were eligible” describes an eligibility boundary. It does not necessarily tell you the day on which the databases were searched.
Find out exactly what the review searched
Before extending the search, determine where the earlier evidence came from. A well-reported review should identify its databases and other information sources and provide enough of the search strategy to understand how records were retrieved.
Useful information includes:
- the databases and platforms searched;
- the concepts represented in the search;
- keywords and synonyms;
- controlled vocabulary such as subject headings;
- field restrictions;
- publication-type or language restrictions;
- date limits;
- other discovery methods such as citation searching.
PRISMA-S specifically addresses the reporting of information sources, complete search strategies, prior search strategies that were adapted or reused, search updates, and dates of searches. These details are useful not only for reproducibility but also for anyone attempting to determine what evidence may have appeared later.
Do not simply copy the old search without inspecting it
A published search strategy is valuable, but it should not automatically be treated as permanently optimal.
Terminology changes. Databases change their indexing. New subject headings may appear. A new technology may acquire a name that did not exist when the earlier search was designed. The research question you are investigating may also differ slightly from the review's question.
Start by asking whether the original strategy still represents the concept adequately.

Search forward with some overlap rather than trusting a perfect date boundary
Once you identify the last search date, you can rerun an appropriate version of the search for the subsequent period. For an informal literature review, that might mean applying a publication-year range beginning around the review's final search period.
A small overlap can be prudent. Publication dates, online-first dates, database entry dates, and indexing dates do not always align neatly. A paper may have existed when the previous search was run but entered a particular database later.
The practical goal is not to create two perfectly adjacent calendar boxes. It is to reduce the chance of creating an unintended gap between the old evidence base and your new search. Duplicate records are easier to remove than relevant studies are to recover after they were never retrieved.
Forward citation searching follows the review into later scholarship
Database searching asks which newer records match your search terms. Forward citation searching asks a different question: which later publications cite a particular earlier publication?
You can perform forward citation searching on the major review itself and, when useful, on important studies included in it. This may uncover later research that uses different terminology from your database search.
Citation-searching guidance distinguishes this from backward citation searching. Backward searching follows the reference list of a paper into earlier literature, while forward searching identifies publications that subsequently cite it.
The two methods retrieve literature through different relationships. A keyword search may discover a paper because its title, abstract, indexing, or other searchable fields match your concepts. Forward citation searching can discover it because of its intellectual connection to a known source.
Do not assume that every paper citing the review is a new primary study
A forward citation search can retrieve editorials, commentaries, protocols, other reviews, methodological papers, and studies that mention the review only tangentially.
That is normal. Citation searching retrieves citing relationships, not guaranteed relevance.
You still need to screen what you find against the purpose of your search. If you are looking specifically for empirical studies published after the review, identify which citing publications actually report eligible new evidence.
Search for newer reviews too
Before reconstructing an extensive update yourself, check whether another evidence synthesis has already covered the subsequent period.
A newer systematic review may extend the evidence base, address a narrower question, use different eligibility criteria, or include studies unavailable to the earlier review. Comparing the two can reveal where their coverage overlaps and where it differs.
Do not assume that the newest review automatically supersedes the older one. Review questions, methods, databases, eligibility criteria, and quality can differ. A newer publication date does not guarantee a more comprehensive or more appropriate synthesis.
The newest relevant records may not yet be fully indexed
Database searching has a temporal complication at the research frontier. Newly published records may enter databases at different times, and complete indexing can occur after initial inclusion.
For very recent literature, you may therefore need several complementary approaches rather than expecting one database query to capture everything immediately. Depending on the topic and purpose, these might include multiple databases, forward citation searching, preprint searching, journal or researcher monitoring, and alerts.
If your project continues for months, turning a useful database search into an alert can help identify later additions without requiring you to repeat the entire discovery process manually.
Finding newer papers is not the same as formally updating a systematic review
This distinction matters.
If you are writing a conventional literature review, developing a proposal, preparing a manuscript, or simply trying to understand what happened after an influential synthesis, you can use the earlier review as a structured starting point and search forward pragmatically.
A formal systematic-review update has a different methodological burden. The review question and eligibility criteria must be considered, searches should be systematic and reproducible, newly retrieved records require screening, and the resulting evidence may need new risk-of-bias assessment, synthesis, and interpretation.
PRISMA-S also distinguishes updating searches during production of a review from updating a previously published systematic review. The former keeps an ongoing review's evidence search current; the latter revisits an already completed evidence synthesis.
Watch Out
Do not describe a few searches for recent papers as a “systematic review update” unless you actually followed an appropriate systematic updating methodology. Finding newer literature for your own review and formally updating an existing systematic review are related but different tasks.
How current your follow-up search needs to be depends on the field
In a rapidly developing area, a major review can become incomplete relatively quickly. In a mature or slowly changing area, the evidence appearing after its search date may be modest.
This is why research currency depends on the rate of change in the evidence base, not simply the number of years printed on the review.
PRISMA-S notes that searches conducted early in a systematic review can become outdated before publication and recommends reporting how searches were updated. It also explains that search updates can involve rerunning searches or using mechanisms such as email alerts.
The underlying lesson applies more broadly: a literature search represents what could be found at a particular point in time. Treat that date as part of the evidence, not administrative trivia.
