Research Moves Through Several Distinct Levels of Reasoning
Data Come Before Findings
Before distinguishing findings, evidence, and conclusions, it helps to identify the material from which they emerge: data.
Data are recorded observations or information available for analysis. Depending on the research, they may include numerical measurements, questionnaire responses, interview transcripts, field notes, documents, images, recordings, administrative records, experimental observations, or other materials.
A dataset by itself does not yet tell the researcher what has been found. Researchers must analyze or interpret those data in relation to the research question.
A Finding Is a Result of Analysis or Interpretation
A finding is something the research analysis reveals about the data.
In quantitative research, a finding might be an estimated difference between groups, an association between variables, a temporal trend, or an estimated effect. In qualitative research, a finding might concern a recurring pattern, process, interpretation, experience, or relationship developed through systematic analysis of the research material.
A finding should remain closely connected to what the analysis actually established.
For example:
Students assigned to the intervention group scored an average of six points higher on the specified assessment than students assigned to the comparison group.
That is a finding. It reports an analytical result without yet claiming everything the result might mean.
A Finding Becomes Evidence in Relation to a Claim
Evidence is relational. Information is evidence for or against something.
The six-point difference in the previous example might provide evidence that the intervention affected performance on the measured outcome, assuming the study design supports that inference. The same finding would provide much less evidence for a claim that the intervention permanently improves all dimensions of learning.
The finding has not changed. The claim against which it is being evaluated has.
This is why research and evidence should not be treated as interchangeable concepts. A study produces findings, but their evidential meaning depends on the proposition researchers want to evaluate.
A Conclusion Answers the Research Question
A conclusion interprets what the findings and evidence imply about the question being investigated.
If a well-designed randomized experiment observes higher performance in an intervention group, researchers may conclude that the intervention improved the measured outcome under the studied conditions.
If the same six-point difference comes from a cross-sectional observational comparison between people who voluntarily chose whether to use the intervention, the appropriate conclusion may be much more limited. The result may demonstrate an association without establishing that the intervention caused the difference.
The numerical finding could look similar while the conclusion differs because the designs provide different inferential leverage.
Findings and Conclusions Should Not Be Collapsed Into One Statement
Researchers sometimes move directly from a numerical or qualitative result to a broad substantive claim.
Consider these two statements:
Finding: Participants who reported more frequent use of the platform also reported higher engagement scores.
Conclusion: Using the platform increases student engagement.
The conclusion introduces a causal claim that the finding alone does not establish. Unless the research design provides a defensible basis for causal inference, the second statement outruns the evidence.
Watch Out
A conclusion can be incorrect even when the reported finding is accurate. The inferential step between them must be evaluated separately.
One Finding Can Be Evidence for Several Claims, but Not Equally Strong Evidence
Suppose researchers find that employees working remotely report higher job satisfaction than employees working entirely on site.
That finding may provide direct evidence about an observed difference in reported satisfaction within the studied sample. With appropriate sampling, it may contribute evidence about a broader population difference.
It provides less direct evidence that remote work causes greater satisfaction if employees selected their own work arrangements. It provides still less evidence that every organization should adopt remote work.
Each successive claim requires additional reasoning and, potentially, additional evidence.
The Research Design Helps Determine What a Finding Can Support
Findings cannot be interpreted independently of how they were produced.
The National Research Council has described scientific inquiry as a process in which evidence is used to develop and evaluate explanations, with explanations required to be consistent with observations and logical reasoning. Different designs provide different opportunities for eliminating competing explanations.
An experiment may be particularly informative for certain causal questions. A representative survey may be appropriate for estimating population characteristics. Interviews may provide evidence about experiences and interpretations. Historical documents may support claims about recorded events and institutional developments.
This is why what counts as valid evidence depends on the research question and claim.
Uncertainty Carries From the Finding Into the Conclusion
Findings are rarely perfectly certain.
A quantitative estimate may have sampling uncertainty. Measurements may be imperfect. Qualitative interpretations may depend on the adequacy and context of the available material. Observational evidence may leave several explanations plausible.
A conclusion should not discard these uncertainties merely because the researcher has reached the discussion section.
If a finding is imprecise, the conclusion should reflect that imprecision. If the design cannot distinguish between two explanations, the conclusion should preserve that ambiguity.
This is part of deciding how confident to be in a research conclusion.
A Conclusion Can Introduce Interpretation Without Becoming Mere Opinion
Because conclusions involve interpretation, they are sometimes mistakenly treated as subjective additions to supposedly objective findings.
Interpretation does not mean arbitrary opinion.
Scientific explanations are expected to connect evidence with logical reasoning and existing knowledge. The National Research Council describes scientific explanations as accounts that relate observations to what is already known and that remain open to evaluation against alternative explanations.
A strong conclusion therefore explains what the findings mean while making the inferential reasoning sufficiently explicit to be scrutinized.
Alternative Explanations Matter Between Evidence and Conclusion
Suppose researchers observe that an outcome changed after a new policy was introduced.
That temporal pattern is evidence relevant to the policy's possible effect. But other changes may have occurred simultaneously. If the study cannot distinguish among these explanations, concluding that the policy caused the outcome may be premature.
Scientific reasoning therefore asks whether competing explanations remain consistent with the evidence.
The National Research Council identifies evaluation against alternative explanations as an essential feature of scientific inquiry. A conclusion becomes more defensible when plausible alternatives have been considered and the evidence genuinely discriminates among them.
Conclusions Can Extend Beyond a Single Finding
A study often produces several findings rather than one.
Researchers may observe a primary outcome, secondary outcomes, subgroup patterns, qualitative themes, implementation differences, or other results. A conclusion may integrate these findings rather than merely repeat one of them.
Integration still requires discipline. Findings that are exploratory, weakly supported, or inconsistent should not quietly acquire the same evidential status as the study's strongest results merely because they appear together in the discussion.
A Study's Conclusion Is Not Necessarily the Scientific Community's Conclusion
The conclusion section of a paper records what the study's authors believe their evidence supports. It does not automatically become the conclusion of the wider field.
Other researchers may interpret the evidence differently, identify limitations, produce new findings, or examine the claim within a larger evidence base.
This distinction becomes especially important once research begins building knowledge across multiple studies. A field-level conclusion should reflect the cumulative evidence rather than merely reproduce the conclusion section of one article.
Findings Can Remain While Conclusions Change
Later research can change how an earlier finding is interpreted without making the original observation disappear.
Researchers may discover a confounding factor, a better mechanism, an important boundary condition, or a measurement limitation. The recorded result can remain part of the scientific record while its evidential meaning changes.
This helps explain why changing scientific knowledge does not necessarily mean earlier research was entirely wrong.
Data
The observations or information available for analysis.
Finding
A result or pattern produced through analysis or interpretation of the data.
Evidence
The information that the finding contributes toward evaluating a particular claim or explanation.
Conclusion
The reasoned judgment about what the evidence supports in relation to the research question.
