Does a Different Location Automatically Mean the Evidence Is Missing?
You find substantial research on your topic, but none of it was conducted in the exact country, province, region, or type of community you want to study. That can make the gap appear straightforward: the phenomenon has been studied elsewhere, but not here.
Sometimes that geographic difference matters. Political institutions, culture, infrastructure, socioeconomic conditions, language, educational systems, health systems, technology access, regulation, or other contextual factors may plausibly alter a phenomenon or the applicability of existing findings.
But a map boundary does not automatically create a knowledge boundary.
If research from comparable settings already provides a convincing answer, the absence of a study carrying your location's name may represent a geographic absence in the literature without constituting a consequential research gap.
03 · What You Need to Know
When Geography Represents a Real Knowledge Problem
A geographic absence and a geographic gap are not identical
Suppose a phenomenon has been investigated in twelve countries but not in yours. You can accurately say that you found no study conducted in your country within the literature searched. That is a description of the geographic distribution of research.
It does not yet establish that another study is needed.
Geographic absence
No relevant study has been identified in the particular location of interest.
Meaningful geographic gap
Existing evidence does not adequately answer the question for that location because context may materially affect interpretation, applicability, mechanisms, outcomes, or decisions.
The second claim requires an argument about why place matters.
Comparable does not mean geographically close
A common mistake is to assume that the most relevant comparison is the nearest country, city, or institution. Geographic proximity may matter, but it is only one dimension of comparability.
Two neighboring countries can have substantially different education systems, regulatory environments, digital infrastructure, economic conditions, languages, or institutional practices. Conversely, two geographically distant settings may share the characteristics most relevant to a particular research question.
Comparable settings should therefore be identified according to the factors that could influence the phenomenon you are studying, not simply according to distance on a map.
Ask which contextual factors could actually change the answer
Applicability, generalizability, external validity, and transferability are related concepts concerned with whether evidence obtained in one set of circumstances can inform another. Methodological guidance from Cochrane emphasizes that applying findings across populations and settings requires judgment because contextual differences can sometimes be minor and sometimes consequential.
The contextual factors that matter depend on the research question. For an educational technology study, relevant differences might include device access, internet reliability, curriculum, assessment practices, institutional policies, language, teacher preparation, or patterns of technology use. For another question, entirely different characteristics may matter.
A useful test is causal rather than merely descriptive: Can you explain how the contextual difference could plausibly alter what happens?
Not every contextual difference is an effect modifier
Researchers can almost always identify differences between two locations. One country has a different culture. One university has different students. One city has different socioeconomic characteristics.
The existence of a difference is not enough. The difference must plausibly matter to the question.
For example, suppose previous research consistently finds that a basic software feature reduces the time required to perform a standardized technical task. Conducting the same comparison in another city may add little if nothing about the local context plausibly affects the mechanism or decision.
By contrast, if the intervention depends on local infrastructure, language, institutional implementation, cultural norms, or policy, contextual replication may be much more informative.

You do not need to demonstrate equivalence on every possible dimension. Identify the characteristics that are theoretically or practically relevant to your particular question.
Existing evidence can be indirect without being useless
Evidence does not become irrelevant merely because the study setting differs from your target setting. Instead, ask how direct the evidence is.
Cochrane's guidance on interpreting evidence recognizes that differences between the population, intervention, comparator, outcomes, or context represented in existing studies and those of the target question can create concerns about indirectness or applicability. The magnitude and importance of those differences require judgment.
This gives you more than two options. The evidence does not have to be either "perfectly applicable" or "completely irrelevant." It may answer some aspects of the question confidently while leaving uncertainty about others.
Country-specific novelty is particularly easy to overstate
Statements such as "no study has examined this in Country X" can be factually useful when carefully verified. The problem arises when the sentence is treated as the complete rationale for another study.
Ask what becomes scientifically uncertain because Country X is missing. If you cannot articulate that uncertainty beyond "it has not been done here," the proposed contribution may be primarily geographic replication.
Replication can itself be valuable. It may test generalizability, estimate locally important parameters, support policy decisions, or reveal contextual heterogeneity. But those purposes should be stated explicitly rather than disguised as an automatic knowledge gap.
A local study can be valuable even when the global knowledge gap is small
Research does not need to establish an entirely new universal phenomenon to be useful. Decision makers may need local estimates. Institutions may require evidence from their own implementation conditions. A policy may need evaluation under a different regulatory system.
In such cases, the rationale may be local applicability rather than broad conceptual novelty.
This distinction strengthens rather than weakens the study because it identifies what the research is actually designed to contribute.
Comparable settings should be part of your attempt to disprove the gap
If your proposed gap depends on geography, deliberately search for studies from settings that resemble yours on the characteristics most likely to matter. Do not restrict this search to neighboring places.
If comparable evidence answers the question convincingly, revise the gap. If important contextual differences remain, explain why they matter. This is part of testing a claimed research gap before committing a study to it .

Ask Why the Location Should Change What We Know
When your proposed gap contains the phrase "in my country," "in this region," or another geographic restriction, add a second question: why should that location matter to the answer?
A simple decision framework
If comparable settings already provide consistent and directly relevant evidence
Avoid treating geographic absence alone as a strong knowledge gap.
If your setting differs on a factor plausibly related to the phenomenon
Explain the mechanism through which that contextual difference could affect findings.
If local decision makers need context-specific estimates
Frame the study around local applicability or decision needs rather than claiming universal conceptual novelty.
If existing evidence comes from substantially different settings
Assess which differences matter and whether they create meaningful uncertainty about transferability.
If the only justification is "nobody has done it here"
Strengthen the rationale before treating geographic novelty as sufficient reason for the study.
This approach does not make local research less important. It makes the justification more precise. Geography matters when something about geography matters.

Before Claiming a Geographic Research Gap
Before using location as the basis of the gap, check:
Have I distinguished the absence of studies in this location from the absence of relevant knowledge?
Have I searched for evidence from settings comparable on the characteristics that matter to my question?
Can I explain which contextual factor could plausibly change the phenomenon, mechanism, outcome, or applicability of existing findings?
Am I comparing settings substantively rather than relying only on geographic proximity?
Have I considered relevant differences in population, policy, institutions, culture, language, infrastructure, or resources where they matter?
If existing evidence is partially applicable, have I identified exactly what uncertainty remains?
If the purpose is to provide local estimates or inform local decisions, have I stated that directly?
Would the study still have a clear contribution if I removed the phrase "in this country" from my novelty claim?
