Can an Apparent Geographic Gap Disappear When You Look at Comparable Settings?

The absence of studies in one country or region does not automatically create a meaningful research gap. Evidence from comparable settings may already answer the question unless location plausibly changes what you need to know.

01 · The Question

Does a Different Location Automatically Mean the Evidence Is Missing?

You find substantial research on your topic, but none of it was conducted in the exact country, province, region, or type of community you want to study. That can make the gap appear straightforward: the phenomenon has been studied elsewhere, but not here.

Sometimes that geographic difference matters. Political institutions, culture, infrastructure, socioeconomic conditions, language, educational systems, health systems, technology access, regulation, or other contextual factors may plausibly alter a phenomenon or the applicability of existing findings.

But a map boundary does not automatically create a knowledge boundary.

If research from comparable settings already provides a convincing answer, the absence of a study carrying your location's name may represent a geographic absence in the literature without constituting a consequential research gap.

02 · The Short Answer

Can Evidence From Elsewhere Fill a Geographic Research Gap?

In Brief

Yes. An apparent geographic research gap can weaken or disappear when evidence from sufficiently comparable settings already answers the underlying question and there is no strong reason to expect location-specific conditions to change the conclusion.

Geographic difference becomes a stronger justification for new research when contextual characteristics could plausibly affect the phenomenon, mechanism, outcome, implementation, or applicability of existing evidence. The relevant question is therefore not simply "Has this been studied here?" but "What about here could reasonably make the answer different?"

03 · What You Need to Know

When Geography Represents a Real Knowledge Problem

A geographic absence and a geographic gap are not identical

Suppose a phenomenon has been investigated in twelve countries but not in yours. You can accurately say that you found no study conducted in your country within the literature searched. That is a description of the geographic distribution of research.

It does not yet establish that another study is needed.

Geographic absence No relevant study has been identified in the particular location of interest.
Meaningful geographic gap Existing evidence does not adequately answer the question for that location because context may materially affect interpretation, applicability, mechanisms, outcomes, or decisions.

The second claim requires an argument about why place matters.

Comparable does not mean geographically close

A common mistake is to assume that the most relevant comparison is the nearest country, city, or institution. Geographic proximity may matter, but it is only one dimension of comparability.

Two neighboring countries can have substantially different education systems, regulatory environments, digital infrastructure, economic conditions, languages, or institutional practices. Conversely, two geographically distant settings may share the characteristics most relevant to a particular research question.

Comparable settings should therefore be identified according to the factors that could influence the phenomenon you are studying, not simply according to distance on a map.

Ask which contextual factors could actually change the answer

Applicability, generalizability, external validity, and transferability are related concepts concerned with whether evidence obtained in one set of circumstances can inform another. Methodological guidance from Cochrane emphasizes that applying findings across populations and settings requires judgment because contextual differences can sometimes be minor and sometimes consequential.

The contextual factors that matter depend on the research question. For an educational technology study, relevant differences might include device access, internet reliability, curriculum, assessment practices, institutional policies, language, teacher preparation, or patterns of technology use. For another question, entirely different characteristics may matter.

A useful test is causal rather than merely descriptive: Can you explain how the contextual difference could plausibly alter what happens?

Not every contextual difference is an effect modifier

Researchers can almost always identify differences between two locations. One country has a different culture. One university has different students. One city has different socioeconomic characteristics.

The existence of a difference is not enough. The difference must plausibly matter to the question.

For example, suppose previous research consistently finds that a basic software feature reduces the time required to perform a standardized technical task. Conducting the same comparison in another city may add little if nothing about the local context plausibly affects the mechanism or decision.

By contrast, if the intervention depends on local infrastructure, language, institutional implementation, cultural norms, or policy, contextual replication may be much more informative.

Compare settings on relevant dimensions

Institutional system Policies, curriculum, governance, organizational practices, resources The system may alter implementation or behavior.

Culture and language Norms, communication practices, meanings, linguistic conditions These may affect interpretation, behavior, measurement, or implementation.
Economic conditions Resources, costs, incentives, inequalities Economic constraints may alter adoption or outcomes.
Policy and regulation Laws, standards, institutional requirements Rules can change how an intervention or behavior operates.

You do not need to demonstrate equivalence on every possible dimension. Identify the characteristics that are theoretically or practically relevant to your particular question.

Existing evidence can be indirect without being useless

Evidence does not become irrelevant merely because the study setting differs from your target setting. Instead, ask how direct the evidence is.

Cochrane's guidance on interpreting evidence recognizes that differences between the population, intervention, comparator, outcomes, or context represented in existing studies and those of the target question can create concerns about indirectness or applicability. The magnitude and importance of those differences require judgment.

This gives you more than two options. The evidence does not have to be either "perfectly applicable" or "completely irrelevant." It may answer some aspects of the question confidently while leaving uncertainty about others.

Country-specific novelty is particularly easy to overstate

Statements such as "no study has examined this in Country X" can be factually useful when carefully verified. The problem arises when the sentence is treated as the complete rationale for another study.

Ask what becomes scientifically uncertain because Country X is missing. If you cannot articulate that uncertainty beyond "it has not been done here," the proposed contribution may be primarily geographic replication.

Replication can itself be valuable. It may test generalizability, estimate locally important parameters, support policy decisions, or reveal contextual heterogeneity. But those purposes should be stated explicitly rather than disguised as an automatic knowledge gap.

A local study can be valuable even when the global knowledge gap is small

Research does not need to establish an entirely new universal phenomenon to be useful. Decision makers may need local estimates. Institutions may require evidence from their own implementation conditions. A policy may need evaluation under a different regulatory system.

In such cases, the rationale may be local applicability rather than broad conceptual novelty.

This distinction strengthens rather than weakens the study because it identifies what the research is actually designed to contribute.

Comparable settings should be part of your attempt to disprove the gap

If your proposed gap depends on geography, deliberately search for studies from settings that resemble yours on the characteristics most likely to matter. Do not restrict this search to neighboring places.

If comparable evidence answers the question convincingly, revise the gap. If important contextual differences remain, explain why they matter. This is part of testing a claimed research gap before committing a study to it.

04 · A Practical Example

When "Not Studied in My Country" Is Not Enough

Hypothetical Example

Generative AI use among university students

Suppose a researcher finds numerous studies examining university students' adoption of generative AI, but none from the researcher's country. The proposed gap becomes: "No study has investigated generative AI adoption among university students in Country A."

Initial observation No study identified in Country A → apparent geographic gap
Comparable-setting search The researcher examines studies from countries with similar higher-education structures, student technology access, institutional AI policies, and patterns of digital adoption.
Evidence assessment Several studies consistently identify similar predictors of adoption across those settings.
Contextual question The researcher asks what feature of Country A provides a credible reason to expect a substantively different relationship.
Gap reassessment If no consequential difference can be identified, the mere absence of Country A studies provides a weak novelty argument.

Now suppose Country A has a distinctive national policy that prohibits several common forms of AI use in assessed university work, while the comparison countries permit them. That policy could plausibly change students' opportunities, perceived risks, and motivations for adoption.

The location now matters for a reason. The stronger research question is no longer simply whether students in Country A adopt generative AI. It concerns how a consequential contextual condition may alter a phenomenon previously studied elsewhere.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Common Mistakes When Claiming Geographic Research Gaps

Misconception

"Nobody Has Studied This in My Country, So the Gap Is Established"

That establishes geographic absence only if the search is sufficiently defensible. A meaningful research gap requires an additional argument about why evidence from elsewhere does not adequately answer the question for your setting.

Misconception

"Every Country Is Different, So Local Research Is Always Necessary"

Every setting differs in some respects, but not every difference is relevant to every research question. Identify the contextual characteristics capable of changing the phenomenon, inference, implementation, or decision.

Misconception

"The Nearest Country Provides the Best Comparison"

Geographic proximity does not guarantee substantive comparability. A distant setting may be more informative if it resembles your target context on the dimensions that actually affect the research question.

Misconception

"Evidence From Another Country Is Not Applicable Here"

That conclusion requires justification. Evidence may be highly applicable, partially applicable, or meaningfully indirect depending on the populations, systems, interventions, mechanisms, and contextual conditions involved.

Misconception

"If Comparable Evidence Exists, a Local Study Has No Value"

A local study may still provide useful estimates, test transferability, support policy decisions, evaluate implementation, or examine a consequential contextual difference. The rationale should identify that value rather than rely on geographic novelty alone.

06 · What This Means for You

Ask Why the Location Should Change What We Know

When your proposed gap contains the phrase "in my country," "in this region," or another geographic restriction, add a second question: why should that location matter to the answer?

A simple decision framework

If comparable settings already provide consistent and directly relevant evidence
Avoid treating geographic absence alone as a strong knowledge gap.
If your setting differs on a factor plausibly related to the phenomenon
Explain the mechanism through which that contextual difference could affect findings.
If local decision makers need context-specific estimates
Frame the study around local applicability or decision needs rather than claiming universal conceptual novelty.
If existing evidence comes from substantially different settings
Assess which differences matter and whether they create meaningful uncertainty about transferability.
If the only justification is "nobody has done it here"
Strengthen the rationale before treating geographic novelty as sufficient reason for the study.

This approach does not make local research less important. It makes the justification more precise. Geography matters when something about geography matters.

07 · A Quick Checklist

Before Claiming a Geographic Research Gap

Before using location as the basis of the gap, check:
Have I distinguished the absence of studies in this location from the absence of relevant knowledge?
Have I searched for evidence from settings comparable on the characteristics that matter to my question?
Can I explain which contextual factor could plausibly change the phenomenon, mechanism, outcome, or applicability of existing findings?
Am I comparing settings substantively rather than relying only on geographic proximity?
Have I considered relevant differences in population, policy, institutions, culture, language, infrastructure, or resources where they matter?
If existing evidence is partially applicable, have I identified exactly what uncertainty remains?
If the purpose is to provide local estimates or inform local decisions, have I stated that directly?
Would the study still have a clear contribution if I removed the phrase "in this country" from my novelty claim?

Questions About Geographic Research Gaps

Is the absence of research in my country a research gap?

It can be, but not automatically. The stronger argument explains why evidence from other settings cannot adequately answer the question for your country, or why locally specific evidence is needed for an important scientific or practical decision.

How do I decide whether two settings are comparable?

Identify contextual characteristics that could plausibly affect your particular research question, then compare settings on those dimensions. Relevant factors might include population characteristics, institutions, policy, culture, infrastructure, language, resources, or implementation conditions.

Does cultural difference automatically justify repeating a study?

No. Culture may be highly consequential for some questions and relatively peripheral for others. Explain how a particular cultural difference could plausibly affect the construct, relationship, measurement, mechanism, or outcome being investigated.

Can replication in another country still be worthwhile?

Yes. Cross-context replication can test generalizability, examine contextual heterogeneity, provide locally relevant estimates, or support decisions. Those are legitimate purposes even when the original relationship is already well established elsewhere.

What if all existing studies come from high-income countries?

A study in a substantially different resource or institutional context may be well justified if those differences could affect the phenomenon or applicability of existing findings. Specify which differences matter rather than treating national income classification alone as proof that results will differ.

Can studies from another country completely fill my gap?

Yes, if they answer the underlying question adequately and the contextual differences do not create consequential uncertainty for your intended inference or decision. In other cases, they may narrow rather than eliminate the gap.

Location Matters When Context Changes the Question or Its Answer

The Bottom Line

An apparent geographic research gap can disappear when evidence from comparable settings already answers the underlying question and there is no compelling reason to expect the target location to produce meaningfully different knowledge.

Do not treat borders as automatic knowledge gaps. Identify what is contextually distinctive, explain how that difference could matter, and determine whether existing evidence is sufficiently applicable. When local evidence is needed primarily for local decisions, say so directly rather than relying on geographic novelty alone.
