Are Methodology and Methods Really Different?
You interviewed participants, administered a questionnaire, analyzed documents, or ran a statistical model. Are those your research methods or your methodology?
The two terms are frequently used interchangeably in theses, journal articles, research proposals, and even methodological texts. In some disciplines, a chapter containing everything about how a study was conducted is routinely called the “Methodology” chapter. A journal article may call essentially the same material “Methods.” These conventions can make the distinction seem unnecessarily academic.
There is, however, a useful conceptual difference.
Methods concern the procedures through which research is conducted. Methodology concerns the reasoning, principles, assumptions, and logic informing how inquiry is approached and why particular methods are appropriate.
The boundary is not universal. Different disciplines and methodological traditions use the terms differently, and some use methodology broadly enough to encompass research design and methods. The practical goal is therefore not to enforce one vocabulary everywhere. It is to distinguish what you did from the methodological reasoning that makes those choices defensible.

The Difference Is About More Than Vocabulary
Methods are the procedures used to conduct the study
Research methods are the things researchers actually do to generate and work with evidence.
Depending on the study, these may include administering questionnaires, conducting interviews, facilitating focus groups, observing participants, extracting records, collecting specimens, performing experiments, coding documents, measuring variables, estimating statistical models, or conducting qualitative analysis.
Methods are therefore procedural and operational. They answer questions such as: How will participants be recruited? How will data be generated? Which instrument will measure the construct? How will interviews be conducted? How will observations be recorded? How will the resulting evidence be analyzed?
A methods section that describes these procedures precisely helps readers understand what happened and, where appropriate, assess whether the procedures could be reproduced or meaningfully evaluated.
Methodology concerns the logic informing those procedures
Methodology operates at a different level.
Rather than merely identifying a procedure, methodology concerns the rationale and principles informing how inquiry is undertaken. It asks why particular ways of producing and interpreting knowledge are appropriate for the problem being investigated.
Depending on the research tradition, methodological reasoning may involve assumptions about what can be known, what constitutes relevant evidence, how the researcher relates to the phenomenon being studied, how concepts should be operationalized or interpreted, and what standards should be used to evaluate the resulting knowledge.
This is especially visible in qualitative research, where methodological traditions may influence participant selection, the relationship between researcher and participant, the role of context, the way data generation develops during the study, and the approach to interpretation.
It is also present in quantitative research, even when it is less explicitly discussed. Decisions about measurement, causal inference, sampling, model specification, uncertainty, and what constitutes evidence all rest on methodological reasoning rather than on procedures alone.
The same method can serve different methodologies
An interview does not carry a single methodological meaning.
Researchers might use interviews to explore lived experience, understand organizational practices, develop theory, investigate a bounded case, evaluate implementation, or provide explanatory evidence alongside quantitative findings. The mechanics of interviewing may overlap, yet the methodological purpose of the interview and the way its evidence is interpreted can differ substantially.
Likewise, numerical methods do not automatically imply one methodology. Statistical analysis may be used for description, prediction, causal inference, measurement development, evaluation, or other purposes. The methodological logic determines what the analysis is intended to establish and what assumptions must hold for that interpretation to be defensible.
This is one reason simply listing procedures is not enough. Methods become meaningful within a larger logic of inquiry.
Methodology is not just a longer word for methods
A common source of confusion is the use of methodology to mean “the methods I used.” In everyday academic writing, that usage is widespread. Conceptually, however, it removes a useful distinction.

These categories are useful for thinking, but they should not be treated as universally standardized compartments. Methodological literature uses the terms with considerable variation. Some authors place design within methodology; others speak broadly of “research methods” when discussing design, sampling, measurement, and analysis together.
The more important distinction is between procedural description and methodological justification.
Where does research design fit?
Research design adds another layer that is often confused with both methodology and methods.
A useful way to conceptualize the relationship is that methodology informs the general logic of inquiry, research design structures the investigation so that it can answer the question, and methods implement that structure through specific procedures.
For example, imagine a study seeking to understand how novice teachers experience the introduction of generative AI into classroom practice. The researcher's methodological orientation would influence what counts as meaningful evidence and how experience is understood. The research design would organize whose experiences are investigated, in what setting, over what period, and through what overall structure. Interviews, observations, document analysis, and the procedures used to interpret those materials would constitute methods within that investigation.
For a more focused treatment of the structural level, the distinction between research design and research methods helps clarify why describing a data-collection technique does not fully describe a study.
Methodology should justify choices rather than decorate them
A methodology section can become unhelpful when it consists primarily of textbook definitions.
Researchers sometimes devote several pages to defining qualitative research, quantitative research, positivism, constructivism, phenomenology, surveys, interviews, and sampling without explaining how any of those ideas affected the actual study.
Methodological discussion earns its place when it clarifies decisions.
If a methodological position influenced what the researcher considered legitimate evidence, explain that connection. If it shaped participant selection, researcher involvement, data generation, analysis, or interpretation, make the relationship explicit. If a methodological label has no meaningful consequence for how the study was designed or conducted, several paragraphs defining it may add less value than expected.
Readers need to understand the logic of the study, not merely see that the researcher has met the local quota for methodological vocabulary.
Your methodological reasoning should connect to the research question
Methodological choices should not float independently of the research problem.
A question asking how people make sense of an experience creates different epistemic and evidentiary demands from a question estimating the prevalence of a condition in a population. A question seeking a causal effect creates different demands again.
This is why methodology, design, and methods should form a coherent chain. The research question identifies what needs to be understood. Methodological reasoning establishes an appropriate way of knowing or investigating it. The design structures the inquiry. Methods produce and analyze the relevant evidence.
If those elements conflict, the study can become difficult to justify even when each component sounds respectable in isolation.
Quantitative research has methodology too
Methodology is sometimes discussed as though it belonged primarily to qualitative research. That is misleading.
Quantitative studies also depend on methodological assumptions and principles. Researchers make decisions about how theoretical constructs become measurable variables, how populations are represented through samples, what constitutes a meaningful comparison, which assumptions permit statistical inference, and under what conditions an observed relationship may support causal interpretation.
Randomization, for example, is not valuable simply because it is a procedure. Its methodological significance comes from the role random assignment can play in creating comparable groups and supporting particular causal inferences under appropriate conditions.
Likewise, a regression model is not self-interpreting. Its evidentiary meaning depends on the research design, measurement quality, model assumptions, data-generating process, and intended inference.
Qualitative research is not defined simply by using interviews
The reverse misunderstanding is equally common.
Conducting interviews does not automatically make a study methodologically coherent qualitative research. Researchers still need to determine what the interviews are intended to reveal, how participants or cases are selected, how the researcher approaches interpretation, what analytic strategy is appropriate, and how claims will be supported.
Guidance on qualitative research emphasizes that methods should be selected and implemented in relation to the research question and methodological approach rather than treated as generic techniques. Qualitative quality also involves issues such as reflexivity, transparency of analysis, contextual sensitivity, and the appropriateness of claims to the evidence produced.
Terminology varies, so define what matters
You may encounter books that distinguish sharply between methodology and methods, articles that use the terms loosely, departments that require a “Research Methodology” chapter, and journals whose reporting section is simply titled “Methods.” None of this means that one source must be wrong.
Academic terminology develops within disciplinary communities. Conventions differ.
If your institution requires a Methodology chapter, use the required heading. If a journal requires a Methods section, follow the journal. What matters is whether the content adequately communicates the methodological rationale, research design, procedures, analysis, and other information readers need.
Watch Out
Do not spend more effort defending a universal definition of “methodology” than explaining your actual study. Where terminology is contested or discipline-specific, define how you are using the term and move quickly to the substantive methodological decisions.
