Can You Use More Than One Data Collection Method Without Doing Mixed-Methods Research?

Using interviews and observations, or several other data collection techniques, does not automatically make a study mixed methods. What matters is the methodological nature of the evidence and how the different components are designed, analyzed, and related.

01 · The Question

If you use two data collection methods, have you created a mixed-methods study?

Suppose your qualitative study uses both interviews and observations. Or you analyze documents and conduct focus groups. Perhaps a quantitative study combines questionnaire responses with administrative records. You are clearly using more than one way to obtain evidence.

Does that make the study mixed methods?

Not necessarily. The number of data collection techniques does not determine whether a study is mixed methods. A study can use several methods within a qualitative or quantitative design. Mixed-methods research generally involves qualitative and quantitative components that are intentionally brought together within an overall design, with integration playing a central methodological role.

02 · The Short Answer

Multiple methods and mixed methods are not the same thing

In Brief

Yes. You can use more than one data collection method without conducting mixed-methods research; multiple collection techniques can be used within a qualitative study, within a quantitative study, or in another multimethod design.

Mixed-methods research is not defined simply by counting methods. It involves qualitative and quantitative strands or forms of evidence and, in widely used contemporary definitions, purposeful integration of those components within the study's design, methods, analysis, interpretation, or reporting.

03 · What You Need to Know

Count the methodological components, not merely the instruments

A data collection method is not the same thing as a methodological approach

One source of confusion is the word “method.” It can refer to a broad methodological approach, an overall research design, a specific data collection technique, or an analytical procedure. As a result, saying that a study “uses multiple methods” can mean several different things.

An interview, observation, questionnaire, focus group, document analysis procedure, test, or system-log extraction can function as a data collection technique. Using two of these does not automatically mean that two methodological traditions have been combined.

For example, a qualitative case study might use interviews, observations, and documents to understand the same case. Multiple forms of data collection are common in case study research and other qualitative designs. The study can remain qualitative if its design, evidence, analysis, and inferential logic remain within that methodological orientation.

Similarly, a quantitative study might combine a standardized questionnaire, test scores, and administrative records. Three sources of quantitative evidence do not make the design mixed methods merely because three collection procedures are involved.

Mixed methods requires more than numerical and textual material appearing together

Widely used definitions of mixed-methods research emphasize the collection and analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data and their integration within an overall study. Integration can occur at several points, including design, methods, interpretation, and reporting.

This matters because superficial combinations can easily be mislabeled. An interview study does not become mixed methods merely because the researcher reports participants' ages numerically. A survey does not necessarily become mixed methods because it contains one optional comment box. Likewise, a qualitative study does not become mixed methods because researchers count how many participants mentioned a theme.

The broader distinction between having both numbers and words and actually conducting mixed-methods research depends on how those forms of evidence function within the study.

Integration is central to mixed-methods research

Mixed-methods scholars commonly treat integration as a defining feature rather than an optional final step. Integration means that the qualitative and quantitative components are deliberately related so that their combination contributes to answering the research problem.

Fetters, Curry, and Creswell describe integration at several levels. One dataset may help determine sampling for another; findings from one component may shape collection in another; qualitative and quantitative datasets may be merged for analysis; one component may be embedded within another; or findings may be explicitly brought together during interpretation and reporting.

Simply conducting a survey and several interviews in the same project therefore does not tell you enough. You still need to know what each component is doing and how they relate.

Multiple data collection methods Two or more techniques or sources are used to obtain evidence. They may all belong to the same broad methodological approach.
Mixed-methods research Qualitative and quantitative components are intentionally combined and integrated according to an overall methodological design.

A qualitative study can use several collection methods

Consider an ethnographic or case-oriented study of technology use in a university department. Researchers might observe meetings, interview faculty members, collect institutional documents, and examine artifacts produced during implementation.

Those techniques provide different forms of qualitative evidence. Observation may capture practices and interactions, interviews may reveal participants' interpretations, and documents may show formal policies or historical records. Their combination can deepen understanding without turning the study into mixed methods.

The methodological rationale may involve complementarity, contextualization, or triangulation. Methodological literature describes triangulation as the use of multiple methods, data sources, investigators, or theoretical perspectives to examine a phenomenon, although terminology and classifications vary across traditions.

A quantitative study can also use several collection methods

Imagine a study examining academic performance and technology use. Researchers administer a standardized scale, obtain assessment scores, and extract platform activity records. Each procedure generates quantitative variables that are analyzed within a quantitative design.

The study uses several collection methods or data sources, but nothing about that combination inherently introduces a qualitative component. It therefore does not become mixed methods simply because the evidence came through several routes.

This distinction is especially useful when planning which collection methods fit the evidence required by the research question. Researchers can choose several techniques because the question warrants them without prematurely assigning a mixed-methods label.

Multiple methods should have a methodological purpose

Adding a second method should answer a recognizable need. Perhaps observation captures behavior that interviews cannot. Documents provide historical or institutional context unavailable from participant accounts. Administrative records provide independently recorded outcomes. One method may also reveal a dimension of the phenomenon that another cannot adequately capture.

The rationale should be specified before simply assuming that more methods create stronger evidence. Multiple methods add collection time, analysis, data management, ethical considerations, and sometimes participant burden.

If you cannot explain what the second method contributes, that is a useful warning. Methodological ornamentation is still ornamentation, even when it produces another spreadsheet.

Using several methods is not automatically triangulation either

Triangulation is another term that is sometimes used too loosely. Simply having interviews and observations in the same project does not explain whether or how the researcher intends to relate the resulting evidence.

Classic and contemporary accounts distinguish several forms of triangulation, including data, investigator, theoretical, and methodological triangulation. Methodological triangulation concerns the use of more than one method to investigate a phenomenon, with further distinctions sometimes made between within-method and between-method forms.

Whether your particular combination should be described as triangulation depends on its purpose and methodological framing. If the methods address unrelated questions and their results are never meaningfully compared or connected, calling the arrangement triangulation may communicate more methodological integration than actually occurred.

The broader question of what triangulation is supposed to accomplish therefore deserves separate treatment from simply deciding to collect more data.

Multiple sources and multiple methods are also different decisions

You can collect data from several sources using one method, or use several methods with the same source or population. These design choices should not be collapsed.

For example, the same interview protocol might be used with students, instructors, and administrators. That introduces several participant groups or data sources without necessarily introducing several collection methods. Conversely, the same group of students might complete a questionnaire and participate in interviews, giving the researcher two collection methods involving one participant group.

Thinking separately about whether information should come from more than one source can make the design rationale much clearer.

Do not let the label determine the design

Researchers sometimes begin by deciding that a project should be “mixed methods” and then search for something quantitative and something qualitative to add. This reverses the more defensible sequence.

Begin with the research problem and questions. Determine what evidence is necessary. Decide which sources and collection procedures can provide it. Then determine the methodological design that accurately describes how those components will be analyzed and related.

If one qualitative approach with two collection techniques adequately answers the question, there is no methodological prize for relabeling it as mixed methods.

04 · A Practical Example

Two methods can still form one qualitative study

Hypothetical Example

Understanding how teachers implement a new classroom technology

A researcher wants to understand how teachers actually implement a newly introduced classroom technology and how they explain the decisions they make while using it.

Observation The researcher observes selected lessons to document how the technology is used in classroom practice, including interactions and situations that participants may not spontaneously describe afterward.
Interview The same teachers participate in semi-structured interviews about why they used the technology in particular ways, what difficulties they encountered, and how they interpreted classroom events.
Analysis Both datasets are analyzed qualitatively. Observational and interview evidence are compared and related to develop a richer interpretation of implementation.
Classification The project uses multiple qualitative data collection methods. It need not be described as mixed-methods research merely because interviews and observations were combined.

Now suppose the researcher also administers a validated quantitative scale, analyzes the resulting scores statistically, and intentionally integrates those results with the qualitative findings to address the overall research problem. The methodological design has changed in a more consequential way. Whether it should be classified as mixed methods would then depend on the role and integration of those qualitative and quantitative components.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Common misconceptions about multiple methods and mixed methods

Misconception

“Two data collection methods means mixed methods”

No. Interviews plus observation can form a qualitative design. A questionnaire plus administrative records can form a quantitative design. Count the methodological components and examine how they function rather than simply counting collection techniques.

Misconception

“A survey and an interview automatically make a study mixed methods”

Not automatically. A survey can generate qualitative or quantitative material, and interviews can be structured in different ways. More importantly, mixed methods concerns the nature and integration of qualitative and quantitative components, not the names of the instruments alone.

Misconception

“If I have numbers and words, I have mixed methods”

No. Numerical demographics in an interview study or open-ended comments in an otherwise quantitative questionnaire do not necessarily constitute a substantive qualitative and quantitative mixed-methods design. The role, rigor, and integration of each component matter.

Misconception

“Using multiple qualitative methods is mixed methods”

No. A qualitative study may legitimately use interviews, observations, focus groups, documents, or other qualitative techniques in combination while remaining a qualitative study.

Misconception

“More methods automatically make the findings more credible”

No. Additional methods help only when they are appropriately designed and serve a clear purpose. Poorly aligned methods can create contradictory, redundant, or superficial evidence and considerably more analytical work without improving the conclusions.

Misconception

“If the findings agree, that proves they are correct”

No. Convergence across methods may increase confidence in an interpretation under appropriate conditions, but methods can share assumptions, biases, sampling limitations, or measurement problems. Agreement should be interpreted rather than treated as automatic proof.

06 · What This Means for You

Give every method a clear job before adding it

If you are considering a second or third data collection method, do not begin by asking what methodological label the study will receive. Ask what evidentiary problem the additional method solves.

A simple decision framework

If several qualitative techniques are needed to understand different aspects of the phenomenon
Use them when justified; the study can remain qualitative.
If several quantitative sources or measurement procedures are needed
Use them when justified; multiple quantitative methods do not make the study mixed methods.
If both qualitative and quantitative components are necessary
Specify what each contributes and examine whether an explicit mixed-methods design is appropriate.
If you intend to call the study mixed methods
Specify where and how the qualitative and quantitative components will be integrated rather than merely collected alongside one another.
If an additional method has no clear relationship to the research question
Do not add it merely to make the methodology appear more comprehensive.

Also consider the practical consequences. Every additional method creates another protocol to design, another source of data to manage, and another analytical task. It may also increase participant burden and practical demands. Methodological ambition should remain proportional to what the research question actually needs.

07 · A Quick Checklist

Before adding another data collection method

Before using multiple methods, check:
Identify the specific research question or evidentiary need served by each data collection method.
Determine whether each method produces qualitative evidence, quantitative evidence, or material that will be treated in another clearly specified way.
Distinguish multiple collection techniques from multiple data sources or participant groups.
If the study remains wholly qualitative or wholly quantitative, do not label it mixed methods merely because several techniques are used.
If claiming a mixed-methods design, specify the substantive qualitative and quantitative components and how they will be integrated.
If claiming triangulation, explain what is being triangulated and what the comparison or combination is intended to accomplish.
Remove any method that adds workload or participant burden without contributing meaningful evidence.
Plan how evidence from the different methods will be analyzed and related before data collection begins.

Frequently asked questions about using multiple data collection methods

Can a qualitative study use both interviews and observations?

Yes. A qualitative study may use interviews and observations, as well as documents, focus groups, artifacts, and other sources when they fit the design. Multiple qualitative collection techniques do not automatically make the study mixed methods.

Can a quantitative study use several data collection methods?

Yes. A quantitative study might combine questionnaire measures, tests, administrative records, structured observations, sensors, or digital trace data. The number of collection procedures does not determine whether the study is mixed methods.

If I use a survey and interviews, is that mixed methods?

Possibly, but not automatically. You need to consider what kind of data each component produces, how each is analyzed, its role in the overall design, and whether substantive qualitative and quantitative components are intentionally integrated.

What is the difference between multimethod and mixed-methods research?

Terminology varies across methodological traditions, but “multimethod” is often used more broadly for studies employing more than one method, including combinations within the same qualitative or quantitative orientation. Mixed methods more specifically refers to combining and integrating qualitative and quantitative components. Because usage is not perfectly uniform, researchers should define their design rather than rely on the label alone.

Is using interviews and observation triangulation?

It can be described as methodological triangulation when the methods are purposefully used to examine the phenomenon in a way consistent with that methodological rationale. Merely including both techniques does not explain what the comparison is intended to accomplish.

Do multiple methods have to produce the same finding?

No. Different methods may converge, complement one another, illuminate different dimensions, or produce apparently contradictory findings. Disagreement can itself be informative and should be investigated rather than automatically treated as a methodological failure.

Does using more methods make a study stronger?

Not by itself. The value of an additional method depends on whether it addresses a meaningful evidentiary need and is implemented and analyzed appropriately. More methods can also introduce additional complexity, cost, and participant burden.

You can use several methods without calling the study mixed methods

The Bottom Line

Using more than one data collection method does not automatically make a study mixed methods; multiple techniques can operate entirely within a qualitative or quantitative design.

If your study includes substantive qualitative and quantitative components, examine how they are intentionally related and integrated before describing the design as mixed methods. Start with the evidence the research question requires, give each method a clear purpose, and choose the methodological label only after the design actually warrants it.
