A Good Design Name Communicates Structure Without Trying to Describe Everything
Begin with what the label needs to tell the reader
A design label is methodological shorthand.
When you call a study cross-sectional, readers can infer something important about its temporal structure. When you call it a randomized controlled trial, random allocation and comparison become central to how the study is understood. A prospective cohort label communicates another recognizable structural logic.
That shorthand is valuable because readers do not have to reconstruct every basic feature from scratch.
Reporting guidance illustrates the value of recognizable design terminology. The STROBE recommendations for observational research ask authors to indicate the study design using a commonly used term in the title or abstract and to present key elements of the design early in the paper. STROBE covers cohort, case-control, and cross-sectional studies, while emphasizing that its purpose is transparent reporting rather than prescribing how research must be designed.
The useful principle extends beyond epidemiology: name the design in terms readers in the relevant research community can recognize, then describe the actual procedures and structural details needed to evaluate it.
“Quantitative” or “qualitative” may be too broad to function as the complete design name
Saying “the study used a quantitative research design” tells readers something, but not very much about how the study is structured.
A quantitative study could be cross-sectional, longitudinal, experimental, quasi-experimental, cohort-based, case-control, or organized in another way. Likewise, qualitative research encompasses multiple traditions and design structures.
Quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods are therefore often better understood as broad approaches to inquiry rather than complete descriptions of a study's design.
If an established and defensible design term communicates important additional structure, include it.
This is one reason the distinction among quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods approaches should not be mistaken for the entire task of naming a research design.
“Descriptive” may communicate purpose without fully identifying structure
Another common statement is:
“The study employed a descriptive research design.”
That terminology is conventional in many fields and is not inherently incorrect. But it often tells readers more about what the study intends to accomplish than about how the evidence is structured.
A descriptive study might be cross-sectional or longitudinal. It might use a population survey, repeated observations, administrative records, or an in-depth qualitative investigation. The description might concern prevalence, characteristics, trajectories, practices, or processes.
Accordingly, exploratory, descriptive, explanatory, and evaluative labels may need to be supplemented by design information that tells readers how the purpose will actually be accomplished.
Include design features that materially change interpretation
Not every methodological characteristic deserves a place in the design name.
A useful test is whether omitting a feature would leave readers with a materially different understanding of how the evidence was generated or what it can support.

The distinction is not absolute. Disciplines package methodological information differently. The goal is to identify the characteristics that help readers understand the study's inferential structure.
Do not confuse design specificity with adjective accumulation
More words do not necessarily create a more precise design description.
Consider:
“A quantitative nonexperimental descriptive correlational cross-sectional survey research design.”
Depending on disciplinary convention, several of those terms may be defensible. Yet some describe approach, some describe purpose, some describe temporal structure, some describe the absence of manipulation, and some may refer to the data-collection strategy.
The resulting phrase can look highly specific while leaving the actual study surprisingly unclear.
A clearer description might be:
“We conducted a cross-sectional survey of undergraduate students to describe patterns of generative AI use and examine associations with selected student characteristics.”
That sentence communicates the recognizable structural design and states what the study is trying to accomplish without requiring the reader to decode a stack of methodological adjectives.
Do not remove useful information merely to make the label shorter
The opposite problem is excessive minimalism.
Suppose researchers write only:
“A survey was conducted.”
Were respondents sampled once or followed over time? Was this a population survey? Were participants selected based on an outcome or exposure? Was the survey embedded in an intervention study?
“Survey” can refer to a mode of data collection, an instrument, or a broader survey-research strategy depending on usage. Additional design information may therefore be necessary.
Similarly, “observational study” is accurate for a wide range of investigations but may be unnecessarily broad when the study is clearly a cohort, case-control, or cross-sectional study. STROBE specifically recognizes these as distinct observational study designs and recommends communicating the design using commonly used terminology.
Name only design features that are actually present
A specific label is useful only when the study satisfies what that label conventionally implies.
Do not call a study longitudinal merely because participants answer questions about the past. Longitudinal research generally involves observations structured across time, although terminology and specific definitions vary by field.
Do not call a study experimental merely because it examines an intervention. If researchers did not manipulate or assign the intervention in the way implied by the design term, another label may be more accurate.
Do not call a study phenomenological, ethnographic, grounded theory, or another established qualitative tradition merely because interviews were conducted. Such labels can imply methodological commitments extending beyond the data-collection method.
Specificity that overstates what the study actually did creates less clarity, not more.
Let disciplinary convention guide terminology
A design name that is immediately clear in epidemiology may be uncommon in education, psychology, sociology, information systems, or another field. Conversely, terminology familiar in qualitative inquiry may not map neatly onto clinical research classifications.
This variation is normal.
Before finalizing the terminology, examine recent high-quality research addressing comparable questions in your field. Check the reporting guideline applicable to the study, if one exists. Examine the terminology used by the methodological sources that genuinely inform your design.
For observational epidemiological research, for example, STROBE distinguishes cohort, case-control, and cross-sectional studies and asks authors to present key design elements early.
The objective is not to imitate terminology mechanically. It is to communicate using concepts your intended research community can interpret consistently.
Separate the design name from the design description
A useful writing strategy is to treat these as two different tasks.
The design name gives readers an efficient orientation. The design description explains the features necessary to understand what was actually done.
Design name
A concise, recognizable label communicating the study's principal structural logic.
Design description
The fuller account of sampling or case selection, timing, groups or conditions, intervention or observation, measurement, setting, and other features required to understand and evaluate the study.
Reporting guidelines reinforce this distinction. STROBE asks authors both to identify the design with a commonly used term and to present key design elements, setting, participants, variables, measurement, bias, study size, and statistical methods. A design label therefore does not eliminate the need for methodological detail.
A complex study may need an overarching label and component labels
Suppose a mixed methods study contains a quasi-experimental quantitative component followed by qualitative interviews designed to explain variation in implementation.
Calling the entire study merely “quasi-experimental” hides the qualitative component. Calling it simply “mixed methods” may hide consequential information about the quantitative design.
One solution is hierarchical description:
“We conducted an explanatory sequential mixed methods study comprising a quasi-experimental quantitative component followed by a qualitative component investigating implementation and participant experience.”
This is particularly useful when a study contains more than one design or distinct design components.
Not every complex study needs all of its architecture compressed into one noun phrase. Often a short opening sentence followed by one or two explanatory sentences is clearer.
The research question remains the ultimate test
A design name is not methodologically impressive because it is specific. It is useful when the design itself is appropriate for the research question.
You could name a study perfectly and still have chosen the wrong design.
Conversely, a carefully structured investigation does not become methodologically weak merely because the author could have described its design more elegantly. Naming and designing are related but separate problems.
The more fundamental task remains choosing the research design that fits the question. Naming comes afterward.
