How Specific Should You Be When Naming Your Research Design?

Name your research design specifically enough to communicate the structural features that matter, but do not turn the label into a catalogue of every methodological decision. A concise established term plus clear methodological detail is usually more informative.

01 · The Question

How Much Information Should Your Research Design Name Contain?

You know how your study will work. Now you have to name the design.

Is it enough to write “quantitative research”? Should you call it a “descriptive study”? Would “cross-sectional survey” be better? Perhaps the technically complete version is something like “quantitative nonexperimental descriptive-correlational cross-sectional survey research design.”

At some point, precision starts competing with readability.

A research design label is useful because it gives readers an efficient description of important features of the study. But the label is not supposed to carry the entire methods section. Sampling, measurement, timing, comparison, analysis, setting, and other methodological decisions often require explicit description whether or not they appear in the design name.

The practical challenge is therefore to find the level of specificity at which the label genuinely helps the reader understand the study without becoming redundant, ambiguous, or unnecessarily elaborate.

02 · The Short Answer

Name the Design Precisely Enough to Communicate Its Important Structure

In Brief

Use the most specific established research design term that accurately communicates the consequential structural features of your study, but do not try to compress every methodological decision into the design label.

The appropriate level of specificity depends on disciplinary convention and what readers need to understand. A concise recognized label such as “cross-sectional study,” “prospective cohort study,” “randomized controlled trial,” or an appropriate qualitative or mixed methods design term is often more useful than either a vague label or a long chain of partially overlapping adjectives.

03 · What You Need to Know

A Good Design Name Communicates Structure Without Trying to Describe Everything

Begin with what the label needs to tell the reader

A design label is methodological shorthand.

When you call a study cross-sectional, readers can infer something important about its temporal structure. When you call it a randomized controlled trial, random allocation and comparison become central to how the study is understood. A prospective cohort label communicates another recognizable structural logic.

That shorthand is valuable because readers do not have to reconstruct every basic feature from scratch.

Reporting guidance illustrates the value of recognizable design terminology. The STROBE recommendations for observational research ask authors to indicate the study design using a commonly used term in the title or abstract and to present key elements of the design early in the paper. STROBE covers cohort, case-control, and cross-sectional studies, while emphasizing that its purpose is transparent reporting rather than prescribing how research must be designed.

The useful principle extends beyond epidemiology: name the design in terms readers in the relevant research community can recognize, then describe the actual procedures and structural details needed to evaluate it.

“Quantitative” or “qualitative” may be too broad to function as the complete design name

Saying “the study used a quantitative research design” tells readers something, but not very much about how the study is structured.

A quantitative study could be cross-sectional, longitudinal, experimental, quasi-experimental, cohort-based, case-control, or organized in another way. Likewise, qualitative research encompasses multiple traditions and design structures.

Quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods are therefore often better understood as broad approaches to inquiry rather than complete descriptions of a study's design.

If an established and defensible design term communicates important additional structure, include it.

This is one reason the distinction among quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods approaches should not be mistaken for the entire task of naming a research design.

“Descriptive” may communicate purpose without fully identifying structure

Another common statement is:

“The study employed a descriptive research design.”

That terminology is conventional in many fields and is not inherently incorrect. But it often tells readers more about what the study intends to accomplish than about how the evidence is structured.

A descriptive study might be cross-sectional or longitudinal. It might use a population survey, repeated observations, administrative records, or an in-depth qualitative investigation. The description might concern prevalence, characteristics, trajectories, practices, or processes.

Accordingly, exploratory, descriptive, explanatory, and evaluative labels may need to be supplemented by design information that tells readers how the purpose will actually be accomplished.

Include design features that materially change interpretation

Not every methodological characteristic deserves a place in the design name.

A useful test is whether omitting a feature would leave readers with a materially different understanding of how the evidence was generated or what it can support.

The distinction is not absolute. Disciplines package methodological information differently. The goal is to identify the characteristics that help readers understand the study's inferential structure.

Do not confuse design specificity with adjective accumulation

More words do not necessarily create a more precise design description.

Consider:

“A quantitative nonexperimental descriptive correlational cross-sectional survey research design.”

Depending on disciplinary convention, several of those terms may be defensible. Yet some describe approach, some describe purpose, some describe temporal structure, some describe the absence of manipulation, and some may refer to the data-collection strategy.

The resulting phrase can look highly specific while leaving the actual study surprisingly unclear.

A clearer description might be:

“We conducted a cross-sectional survey of undergraduate students to describe patterns of generative AI use and examine associations with selected student characteristics.”

That sentence communicates the recognizable structural design and states what the study is trying to accomplish without requiring the reader to decode a stack of methodological adjectives.

Do not remove useful information merely to make the label shorter

The opposite problem is excessive minimalism.

Suppose researchers write only:

“A survey was conducted.”

Were respondents sampled once or followed over time? Was this a population survey? Were participants selected based on an outcome or exposure? Was the survey embedded in an intervention study?

“Survey” can refer to a mode of data collection, an instrument, or a broader survey-research strategy depending on usage. Additional design information may therefore be necessary.

Similarly, “observational study” is accurate for a wide range of investigations but may be unnecessarily broad when the study is clearly a cohort, case-control, or cross-sectional study. STROBE specifically recognizes these as distinct observational study designs and recommends communicating the design using commonly used terminology.

Name only design features that are actually present

A specific label is useful only when the study satisfies what that label conventionally implies.

Do not call a study longitudinal merely because participants answer questions about the past. Longitudinal research generally involves observations structured across time, although terminology and specific definitions vary by field.

Do not call a study experimental merely because it examines an intervention. If researchers did not manipulate or assign the intervention in the way implied by the design term, another label may be more accurate.

Do not call a study phenomenological, ethnographic, grounded theory, or another established qualitative tradition merely because interviews were conducted. Such labels can imply methodological commitments extending beyond the data-collection method.

Specificity that overstates what the study actually did creates less clarity, not more.

Let disciplinary convention guide terminology

A design name that is immediately clear in epidemiology may be uncommon in education, psychology, sociology, information systems, or another field. Conversely, terminology familiar in qualitative inquiry may not map neatly onto clinical research classifications.

This variation is normal.

Before finalizing the terminology, examine recent high-quality research addressing comparable questions in your field. Check the reporting guideline applicable to the study, if one exists. Examine the terminology used by the methodological sources that genuinely inform your design.

For observational epidemiological research, for example, STROBE distinguishes cohort, case-control, and cross-sectional studies and asks authors to present key design elements early.

The objective is not to imitate terminology mechanically. It is to communicate using concepts your intended research community can interpret consistently.

Separate the design name from the design description

A useful writing strategy is to treat these as two different tasks.

The design name gives readers an efficient orientation. The design description explains the features necessary to understand what was actually done.

Design name A concise, recognizable label communicating the study's principal structural logic.
Design description The fuller account of sampling or case selection, timing, groups or conditions, intervention or observation, measurement, setting, and other features required to understand and evaluate the study.

Reporting guidelines reinforce this distinction. STROBE asks authors both to identify the design with a commonly used term and to present key design elements, setting, participants, variables, measurement, bias, study size, and statistical methods. A design label therefore does not eliminate the need for methodological detail.

A complex study may need an overarching label and component labels

Suppose a mixed methods study contains a quasi-experimental quantitative component followed by qualitative interviews designed to explain variation in implementation.

Calling the entire study merely “quasi-experimental” hides the qualitative component. Calling it simply “mixed methods” may hide consequential information about the quantitative design.

One solution is hierarchical description:

“We conducted an explanatory sequential mixed methods study comprising a quasi-experimental quantitative component followed by a qualitative component investigating implementation and participant experience.”

This is particularly useful when a study contains more than one design or distinct design components.

Not every complex study needs all of its architecture compressed into one noun phrase. Often a short opening sentence followed by one or two explanatory sentences is clearer.

The research question remains the ultimate test

A design name is not methodologically impressive because it is specific. It is useful when the design itself is appropriate for the research question.

You could name a study perfectly and still have chosen the wrong design.

Conversely, a carefully structured investigation does not become methodologically weak merely because the author could have described its design more elegantly. Naming and designing are related but separate problems.

The more fundamental task remains choosing the research design that fits the question. Naming comes afterward.

04 · A Practical Example

From a Vague Label to an Informative Design Description

Hypothetical Example

Studying university students' generative AI use

A researcher administers a questionnaire once to a sample of undergraduate students. The study aims to estimate patterns of generative AI use and examine associations between reported use and selected student characteristics.

Too broad “Quantitative research.” This identifies a broad approach but says little about how the study is structured.
Purpose only “Descriptive research.” This communicates that description is important but leaves the temporal and observational structure unclear.
Potentially overloaded “Quantitative nonexperimental descriptive-correlational cross-sectional survey research design.” The terminology may be conventional in some settings, but several labels operate at different conceptual levels and may not all be necessary.
More informative “We conducted a cross-sectional survey of undergraduate students to describe patterns of generative AI use and examine associations with selected student characteristics.”
Then describe the details The methods section explains the target population, sampling strategy, eligibility criteria, questionnaire, measurement period, variables, procedures, and analysis.

The final version is not necessarily the only correct wording. Its advantage is that the recognizable design term communicates structure while the rest of the sentence explains purpose. Methodological details remain where they belong: in the fuller description of the study.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Common Mistakes When Naming a Research Design

Misconception

Is the Longest Design Name the Most Precise?

No. Precision means communicating the relevant methodological distinctions accurately. A long string of labels can be redundant or combine concepts operating at different levels. Use each term only when it adds information readers need.

Misconception

Is “Quantitative Research Design” Specific Enough?

Sometimes it may satisfy a local convention, but it usually communicates only a broad approach. If an established design term such as cross-sectional, cohort, case-control, experimental, or another appropriate label accurately describes the structure, including it will often make the study easier to understand.

Misconception

Is “Descriptive Research Design” Wrong?

No. The term is widely used and may be conventional in your discipline. The limitation is that “descriptive” often communicates purpose more clearly than structural design. If important structural information remains unclear, provide it separately rather than abandoning familiar terminology solely for taxonomic purity.

Should Every Methodological Feature Appear in the Design Name?

No. Sampling procedures, instruments, software, statistical tests, recruitment procedures, and many other details belong in the methods description. The design name should orient the reader rather than reproduce the entire protocol.

Can I Use a More Sophisticated Design Label to Make the Study Sound Stronger?

No. A design term should describe what the study actually does. Calling a study longitudinal, experimental, phenomenological, ethnographic, or mixed methods creates methodological expectations. If those features are not genuinely present, the more elaborate label makes the reporting less accurate.

Misconception

Must Every Discipline Use the Same Design Terminology?

No. Research-design taxonomies differ across fields. Follow relevant disciplinary and reporting conventions while making the study's actual structure clear enough that readers are not dependent on terminology alone.

Use the Shortest Label That Still Communicates the Important Structure

When naming your design, begin with the most recognizable term that accurately captures its central structure.

Then ask what readers would still need to know.

If the label “cross-sectional study” leaves the study's purpose unclear, state the purpose in the same or following sentence. If “mixed methods” hides important component designs, name those components separately. If a qualitative design term carries specific methodological commitments, use it only when those commitments genuinely shape the study.

A simple decision framework

If an established design term accurately communicates the central structure
Use it as the primary design label.
If the label communicates only research purpose
Add the structural information needed to understand how the purpose will be achieved.
If another adjective changes how readers would interpret the evidence
Include it when the distinction is genuine and relevant.
If a term merely repeats information already implied by another label
Consider removing it unless disciplinary convention makes it useful.
If the study contains distinct design components
Name the overarching strategy and describe the important component designs separately rather than forcing everything into one label.
If you are unsure which terminology your field expects
Check relevant reporting guidelines, methodological sources, journal instructions, and well-reported recent studies addressing comparable questions.

The objective is not to discover the longest formally correct name. It is to help another researcher understand the structure quickly and accurately.

07 · A Quick Checklist

Before Finalizing the Name of Your Research Design

Check whether:
The design term accurately describes what the study actually does.
The terminology is recognizable within the relevant discipline or methodological tradition.
Important structural distinctions such as randomization, temporal structure, or component designs are communicated where they materially affect interpretation.
Purpose labels such as descriptive or explanatory are not being asked to communicate structural information they do not contain.
Methods and instruments have not been mistaken for the complete research design.
No design term implies a methodological feature the study does not actually possess.
Unnecessary or redundant adjectives have been removed.
The methods section still describes the study sufficiently rather than relying on the design label to carry all methodological information.

Frequently Asked Questions About Naming Research Designs

How do I name my research design?

Identify the study's central structural features and use an established design term recognized in your field. Then describe additional features in prose rather than trying to place every methodological decision inside the label.

Should I say “quantitative research design”?

You can identify the study as quantitative, but that usually describes the broad approach rather than the complete design. If a more specific design term accurately communicates how the study is structured, include it.

Is “descriptive-correlational research design” acceptable?

The term is used in some disciplines and institutions, so it should not be treated as universally incorrect. Ask what it communicates in your field and whether additional information about temporal structure, sampling, measurement, and analysis is needed. Do not assume that the label itself justifies explanatory or causal conclusions.

Should I include “cross-sectional” in my design name?

If observations are collected within a cross-sectional structure and that feature matters to interpretation, identifying the study as cross-sectional is often useful. STROBE, for example, explicitly recognizes cross-sectional studies as one of its three major observational designs.

Can I call my study longitudinal if I ask participants about the past?

Not automatically. Retrospective questions collected on one occasion do not necessarily create a longitudinal design. Use the terminology accepted in your field and describe the actual temporal structure explicitly so readers know when the relevant observations were made.

Should the design name appear in the title of my paper?

That depends on the field, journal, and applicable reporting guidance. For observational epidemiological studies, STROBE recommends indicating the study design with a commonly used term in the title or abstract. Other reporting guidelines and journals may have different expectations.

What if several design labels apply to my study?

Use the terms that communicate distinct and consequential features. If the resulting label becomes cumbersome, identify the overarching design first and describe the remaining features or component designs in subsequent prose.

Is there one universally correct name for every research design?

Name your research design specifically enough to communicate the structural features that materially affect how the evidence should be understood, but do not try to compress the entire methods section into a single label.

Use established terminology that fits your study and discipline, add distinctions when they genuinely improve interpretation, and describe the remaining methodological details explicitly. Precision comes from accurately communicating the study's logic, not from accumulating the largest possible collection of design adjectives.
