Which Comes First: Narrowing the Topic or Reviewing the Literature?
The sequence seems as though it should be simple. First choose a topic, narrow it into a precise question, and then review the literature. Or perhaps the literature should come first, because how can you know what to study before discovering what researchers already know?
Both sequences contain a problem.
If you try to review the literature while your topic remains extremely broad, the search can become unmanageable. If you finalize a highly specific topic before examining existing research, you may build the project around assumptions that the literature quickly undermines.
In practice, narrowing and literature searching usually need to inform each other.
03 · What You Need to Know
Topic Development and Literature Review Work Best as an Iterative Process
A research topic does not usually move in a perfectly straight line from broad idea to narrow question to literature review. Your initial understanding helps determine what you search for, and what you find changes your understanding of the topic.
This feedback between question and evidence is useful. Research-question guidance commonly recommends reviewing existing literature while developing and refining the question, rather than assuming that the final question can be established independently of what is already known.
Start With a Broad Area, but Not an Unlimited One
Your starting point may be an area such as AI-assisted learning, teacher burnout, vaccine hesitancy, urban heat, workplace surveillance, or online misinformation. That is enough to establish an intellectual neighborhood, but usually not enough to guide a serious research project.
Before conducting a deep review, identify a provisional problem or relationship within the area. You might specify an initial population, phenomenon, outcome, setting, exposure, or context. The purpose is not to finalize the study. It is to make the first round of searching informative.
If the topic is so broad that almost everything you retrieve is potentially relevant, you have not yet created a useful search boundary.
Use Exploratory Searching to Learn the Shape of the Literature
The first searches are partly investigative. You are not merely collecting sources for a literature review chapter. You are learning how researchers describe the problem.
Pay attention to recurring terminology, theoretical perspectives, commonly studied populations, frequently measured outcomes, major debates, methodological patterns, inconsistent findings, and areas where evidence appears thin.
You may also discover that the vocabulary you started with is not the vocabulary used by the field. That alone can substantially alter your topic. A researcher searching only one everyday phrase may conclude that little research exists when a large literature is indexed under a different concept.
Let the Literature Challenge Your Initial Boundaries
After exploratory searching, ask whether your first scope still makes sense.
You might discover that the question has already been answered convincingly. Perhaps the population you assumed was understudied has actually received considerable attention. An outcome may be defined differently than you expected. A supposed gap may disappear once you find the relevant terminology. Alternatively, a debate or unresolved finding may reveal a more consequential question than the one you originally planned.
This is why narrowing too early can hide the real research problem. Early boundaries should guide exploration without preventing the literature from changing your mind.
If You Find Too Much Literature, Narrow Further
An overwhelming body of relevant literature can signal that the question remains too broad. You may need to specify the population, exposure, outcome, context, timeframe, phenomenon, theoretical perspective, or type of relationship more carefully.
Do not narrow randomly. Look at where the literature itself separates into meaningful conversations. Perhaps a broad topic such as "social media and mental health" contains distinct research on passive use, active participation, problematic use, social comparison, sleep disruption, cyberbullying, and platform-specific experiences. Choosing among these distinctions creates a more coherent focus than simply adding a convenient location.
The process of narrowing without making the topic trivial should retain the uncertainty that gives the project its significance.
If You Find Too Little Literature, Do Not Immediately Declare a Gap
Very few search results can mean several different things. The topic may genuinely be emerging or understudied. Your terminology may be too restrictive. The exact combination of population, place, exposure, and outcome may be unnecessarily specific. Relevant evidence may sit in adjacent disciplines or use different language.
Before claiming novelty, relax one boundary at a time and search conceptually related terms. Look for broader evidence around the underlying phenomenon.
If removing a restriction suddenly reveals a substantial literature, you have learned something useful about the scope. You can then decide whether the narrower version represents a meaningful unanswered question or merely an artificial combination that has rarely been written about in exactly those terms.
Read More Deeply Once a Promising Focus Emerges
Exploratory searching helps you orient yourself, but a defensible research question requires more than counting search results or reading titles.
Examine relevant studies closely enough to understand what they actually investigated, how key concepts were defined, which methods were used, what limitations remain, where findings agree or conflict, and what authors claim can and cannot be concluded.
This deeper reading helps distinguish a genuine unresolved problem from an apparent gap created by superficial searching.
Evaluate the Emerging Question for More Than Novelty
A question that appears underexplored still needs to be worth answering. The FINER framework evaluates research questions in terms of feasibility, interest, novelty, ethics, and relevance.
This is important because literature review can tell you that uncertainty exists, but uncertainty alone does not determine whether you should study it. You also need to consider whether the question can be answered credibly with your available participants, data, expertise, time, resources, and ethical constraints.
In other words, the literature helps identify possibilities. Research planning determines which possibilities can become defensible studies.
The Process May Require Several Rounds
Broad interest Identify an area or problem that deserves exploration.
Provisional narrowing Define enough population, phenomenon, outcome, context, or other boundaries to begin searching.
Exploratory search Learn the terminology, major conversations, evidence base, and possible unresolved problems.
Revise the focus Narrow, broaden, or redirect the topic according to what the literature reveals.
Deeper review Examine the strongest candidate problem and relevant evidence more critically.
Evaluate the question Test its contribution, feasibility, relevance, ethical acceptability, and methodological answerability.
Stabilize the scope Formulate a sufficiently precise question to guide the study design and subsequent decisions.
You may move backward in this sequence. A deeper review can expose an assumption that sends you back to broader searching. A feasibility problem can require a different population. A newly discovered concept can change the outcome you want to investigate.
That is not necessarily inefficiency. Some iteration is how an initially interesting subject becomes a defensible research question.
Different Kinds of Research May Require Different Degrees of Early Precision
The balance between early breadth and precision depends partly on what you are doing. An exploratory project may legitimately begin with a broader question than a confirmatory study. Evidence syntheses also differ in how they formulate and refine their questions. Scoping reviews, for example, may begin relatively broadly and iteratively refine the question and eligibility criteria as reviewers develop a better understanding of the evidence base.
By contrast, a confirmatory study eventually requires a clearly pre-specified primary question because that question guides the design, measurements, data collection, and analysis.
The general principle remains the same: use flexibility while you are learning what the study should ask, then use precision once the study must be designed to answer it.
04 · A Practical Example
How Literature Searching Can Reshape a Broad Topic
Hypothetical Example
From "social media and student mental health" to a defensible focus
A researcher begins with an interest in social media and mental health among university students. The topic is too broad for one study, but the researcher does not yet know which aspect deserves priority.
Provisional focus The researcher initially considers the relationship between amount of social media use and anxiety among university students.
Exploratory searching Reading reveals that social media exposure has been operationalized in substantially different ways and that simple measures of time spent may obscure differences in how platforms are used.
Question the first formulation The researcher realizes that "amount of use" may not capture the aspect of social media behavior most relevant to the intended problem.
Search adjacent concepts The literature is examined for more specific patterns of use, plausible mechanisms, relevant outcomes, and populations in which uncertainty remains.
Refine the problem A more specific behavioral or contextual dimension emerges as a stronger candidate than total time spent.
Evaluate feasibility The researcher considers whether the revised constructs can be measured credibly with the available sample, instruments, expertise, and timeframe.
Stabilize the question Only after these iterations does the researcher commit to the final scope and use it to guide the study design.
Notice that the literature did not simply supply references for a predetermined question. It helped determine what the question should be.
At the same time, the researcher did not begin by reading everything ever published about social media. The provisional focus made the first search manageable. The sequence worked because narrowing and reading repeatedly informed each other.
06 · What This Means for You
Use a Narrow, Search, Reconsider, and Refine Cycle
Do not wait for a mythical moment when you have "finished the literature" before deciding what the study is about. Literature is too extensive and continually developing for that to be a useful threshold.
Instead, work in rounds. Narrow enough to search. Search enough to learn. Read enough to challenge your assumptions. Then revise the topic and search again.
A simple decision framework
If your searches retrieve an overwhelming range of unrelated or loosely related studies
Narrow the question using a substantively meaningful dimension.
If almost nothing appears
Check terminology, remove unnecessary restrictions, and search adjacent concepts before declaring a gap.
If the literature has already answered your proposed question convincingly
Look for a justified extension, unresolved limitation, conflicting result, different mechanism, or more consequential question.
If reading reveals that a different outcome, population, exposure, or context carries the important uncertainty
Revise the topic rather than protecting your original formulation.
If the question is meaningful but impossible within your resources
Adjust the scope while preserving the central problem as far as possible.
If the question is supported by the literature and sufficiently feasible, ethical, relevant, and precise
Stabilize it and proceed to align the study design with the question.
When deciding what to change between rounds, avoid narrowing simply by adding qualifiers. Consider which part of the broader topic is actually worth studying and whether each boundary contributes to that problem.
You may occasionally need to remove rather than add elements. If the topic has accumulated too many objectives, comparisons, variables, populations, or outcomes, ask which components are peripheral to the central question.
