Positivism vs. Postpositivism: What’s the Difference?

Positivism and postpositivism both value systematic empirical inquiry, but they differ in how confidently researchers can know reality. Postpositivism retains a commitment to an external reality while treating scientific knowledge as fallible, provisional, and open to correction.

01 · The Question

If Both Value Scientific Evidence, What Separates Positivism From Postpositivism?

Positivism and postpositivism are easy to confuse because they share substantial ground. Both are associated with systematic empirical inquiry, measurement, hypothesis testing, explanation, and attempts to produce knowledge that does not simply reflect a researcher's preferences.

The important difference appears when you ask a harder question: how confidently can researchers know reality?

Stronger positivist formulations tend to assume that an objective reality exists and can be investigated through appropriately designed observation and measurement, with researcher influence controlled or minimized. Postpositivism retains the idea that a reality exists independently of our beliefs about it, but becomes much more cautious about our ability to know that reality perfectly.

Researchers are fallible. Measurements are imperfect. Observations can be theory-laden. Models simplify. Alternative explanations remain possible. Scientific knowledge can therefore become better supported without becoming infallible.

That shift from confidence in objective knowledge toward critical, provisional, and corrigible knowledge is central to understanding the difference.

02 · The Short Answer

Postpositivism Retains Reality but Rejects Certainty About Knowing It

In Brief

Positivism and postpositivism both support systematic empirical investigation, but postpositivism more explicitly recognizes that researchers can only know reality imperfectly because observation, measurement, theory, and human judgment are fallible.

Postpositivism does not abandon objectivity, evidence, hypothesis testing, or scientific explanation. Instead, it treats objectivity more as something researchers pursue through critical scrutiny, methodological safeguards, replication, transparency, and attempts to challenge alternative explanations. Findings are consequently treated as provisional and open to revision rather than as final access to an unquestionable truth.

03 · What You Need to Know

Where Positivism and Postpositivism Actually Diverge

Postpositivism Did Not Simply Reject Positivism

The prefix "post-" can make postpositivism sound as though researchers simply moved beyond positivism and abandoned everything associated with it. That is misleading.

Postpositivist thinking retains several commitments strongly associated with positivist research. Empirical evidence matters. Claims should be open to scrutiny. Researchers should attempt to reduce bias. Explanations should confront evidence. Measurement quality matters. Alternative explanations should be considered.

What changes is the philosophical confidence placed in observation, objectivity, and scientific knowledge.

Postpositivism developed through critiques of stronger positivist accounts of science. Twentieth-century philosophy of science increasingly challenged the idea that researchers could simply observe the world from a neutral position and establish certain knowledge through accumulated observations. Theories influence what researchers look for, measurements can contain error, and evidence may be compatible with more than one explanation.

Postpositivism therefore preserves scientific inquiry while adopting a more explicitly fallibilist understanding of what science can establish.

Both Can Assume a Reality Independent of the Researcher

A major similarity is ontological. Positivist and many postpositivist positions both reject the idea that reality exists only because a researcher constructs or interprets it.

There is something to investigate independently of what an individual researcher happens to believe.

The difference lies in how that reality can be known. Strong positivist accounts are commonly represented as assuming that objective reality can be apprehended through appropriate scientific observation. Postpositivism is more cautious. Reality exists, but researchers can apprehend it only imperfectly.

This distinction is sometimes described as movement from a stronger realist position toward critical realism in older paradigm literature. Researchers should be cautious with that terminology, however, because contemporary critical realism is also a distinct philosophical tradition with its own account of causation, mechanisms, and stratified reality. The labels should not be collapsed merely because they sound similar.

Postpositivism Treats Knowledge as Provisional

Imagine that repeated studies support the prediction that an educational intervention improves learning.

A strong positivist interpretation might emphasize the empirical confirmation of the proposed relationship. A postpositivist interpretation is more likely to emphasize the degree to which the evidence supports the explanation while remaining open to measurement error, unrecognized confounding, boundary conditions, model misspecification, sampling limitations, and future contradictory evidence.

The practical consequence is not indecision. Researchers can still conclude that one explanation is better supported than another.

What changes is the status of that conclusion.

Postpositivist knowledge is not treated as an infallible mirror of reality. Scientific claims remain subject to criticism, replication, refinement, and possible rejection as stronger evidence becomes available.

Objectivity Changes From a Guaranteed Position to an Investigative Goal

One of the most consequential differences concerns objectivity.

In simplified descriptions of positivism, the researcher is treated as an independent observer who can investigate reality without affecting what is observed. Procedures are designed to maintain separation between researcher and object of inquiry.

Postpositivism is more skeptical that researchers can ever occupy a perfectly neutral observational position.

That does not make objectivity irrelevant. Quite the opposite. If individual researchers are fallible, then procedures that expose claims to independent criticism become more important.

Researchers can preregister hypotheses, use validated measures, blind assessors where appropriate, report uncertainty, disclose analytical decisions, conduct sensitivity analyses, share data and code when possible, seek replication, compare competing explanations, and invite peer scrutiny.

Objectivity becomes something scientific communities work toward by making claims criticizable rather than something guaranteed by the researcher's declaration of neutrality.

Postpositivism Takes Measurement Error Seriously

Suppose a researcher wants to measure academic motivation.

Motivation itself is not placed directly on a laboratory scale. The researcher may use questionnaire responses, behavioral indicators, persistence measures, or some combination of observations. Each operationalization represents the construct imperfectly.

Postpositivist thinking draws attention to the gap between the phenomenon and its measurement.

The researcher can develop stronger instruments, evaluate reliability and validity evidence, use multiple indicators, model measurement error, and test whether conclusions are robust to different operationalizations. But the resulting score should not automatically be treated as identical to the underlying construct.

This distinction matters well beyond psychological measurement. Socioeconomic status, learning, discrimination, institutional quality, health, engagement, and countless other research constructs depend on decisions about how abstract concepts become observable variables.

Hypotheses Can Be Tested Without Being Proven True

Both positivist and postpositivist research can use hypothetico-deductive reasoning. A theory generates predictions, those predictions are operationalized, evidence is collected, and the results are used to evaluate the theoretical account.

Postpositivism places greater emphasis on the idea that successful prediction does not establish a theory as permanently true.

Evidence may support a hypothesis while other explanations remain possible. A study may fail to detect a flaw that later research reveals. A relationship may hold in one population but not another. Better measurement may alter the estimated effect.

Researchers therefore accumulate, challenge, and revise evidence rather than expecting a single study to settle a scientific question.

Watch Out

Neither statistical significance nor a result consistent with a hypothesis proves that a theory is true. Evidence must be interpreted in relation to the design, measurement, uncertainty, alternative explanations, prior evidence, and the claims the study can legitimately support.

Falsification Influenced the Move Away From Verification

Karl Popper's philosophy of science is important to discussions of postpositivist thinking because he criticized the idea that repeated confirming observations could conclusively verify universal scientific theories.

A general theory can survive demanding tests without becoming logically proven by them. Scientific inquiry should therefore expose claims to the possibility of refutation rather than search only for confirming examples.

Contemporary postpositivism cannot be reduced to Popper, and scholars classify its intellectual foundations in different ways. Still, the broader fallibilist lesson is important: strong scientific theories should survive critical testing, and researchers should actively consider evidence capable of challenging their preferred explanations.

Postpositivism Does Not Mean "Anything Could Be True"

Recognizing uncertainty does not imply relativism.

A postpositivist can believe that some explanations are much better supported than others. A randomized trial with strong measurement, minimal attrition, an appropriate analysis, a substantial effect, successful replication, and convergent evidence may justify much greater confidence than an uncontrolled anecdotal observation.

The difference is that confidence remains proportionate to the evidence rather than being converted into philosophical certainty.

Evidence can constrain what researchers reasonably believe even if it does not provide perfect access to reality.

How Do Their Research Practices Compare?

Bias Attempts to minimize researcher influence through control and standardization. Accepts that bias cannot necessarily be eliminated completely and uses critical safeguards to detect and reduce it.
Scientific conclusions Stronger formulations may imply greater confidence in establishing objective knowledge. Conclusions are regarded as the best-supported current account rather than final certainty.

The table deliberately uses qualifiers such as "typically" and "stronger formulations." Positivism and postpositivism have intellectual histories more complicated than a two-column chart can represent. Methodology texts also differ in how sharply they separate the two.

Are Both Quantitative Paradigms?

Both have strong associations with quantitative inquiry because measurement, hypothesis testing, experimentation, estimation, and statistical analysis fit comfortably within their assumptions.

But a paradigm should not be inferred from data type alone.

Quantitative research does not have to be positivist, and Park, Konge, and Artino note that even positivist inquiry need not invariably rely on quantitative methods.

Postpositivist researchers may also use qualitative evidence when it serves the research logic. What matters is how evidence is conceptualized, generated, analyzed, and used to support knowledge claims.

Why Are Many Contemporary Quantitative Researchers Closer to Postpositivism?

Many contemporary empirical practices fit comfortably with postpositivist caution even when researchers never use the label.

Confidence intervals communicate uncertainty. Measurement models acknowledge imperfect indicators. Replication tests whether findings survive independent scrutiny. Sensitivity analyses ask whether conclusions depend on analytical choices. Meta-analysis synthesizes evidence rather than treating one study as definitive. Open-science practices can expose decisions and evidence to wider evaluation.

None of these practices belongs exclusively to postpositivism. Their logic, however, fits well with the proposition that scientific knowledge can improve through criticism and accumulated evidence without becoming infallible.

This is also why simply calling all conventional quantitative research "positivist" can erase an important philosophical distinction.

04 · A Practical Example

How the Same Experiment Looks Different Under Postpositivist Assumptions

Hypothetical Example

Does an AI Tutor Improve Mathematics Performance?

Suppose researchers randomly assign students to use either an AI tutoring system or conventional digital practice materials. Students later complete the same mathematics assessment.

Empirical question Both positivist and postpositivist approaches can ask whether the AI tutoring intervention produces better mathematics outcomes.
Measurement Both can operationalize learning through an assessment and use standardized procedures to reduce irrelevant variation.
Testing Both can estimate the intervention effect and evaluate the evidence against a theoretically informed hypothesis.
Postpositivist caution The researchers explicitly recognize that the assessment captures mathematics learning imperfectly, implementation may vary, sampling limits generalization, and other explanations or boundary conditions may emerge in later studies.
Conclusion Rather than claiming that the experiment has proven the AI tutor universally effective, the researchers conclude that the evidence supports an effect under the conditions studied, report the uncertainty, and identify what further evidence would strengthen or challenge that interpretation.

The numerical analysis does not necessarily change because someone adopts a postpositivist label. What changes is the epistemological interpretation of what the evidence allows the researcher to claim.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Common Misunderstandings About Positivism and Postpositivism

Misconception

Did Postpositivism Reject Scientific Objectivity?

No. Postpositivism questions whether individual researchers can achieve perfect neutrality or obtain infallible knowledge, but it still values objectivity. The emphasis shifts toward procedures such as critical scrutiny, transparency, replication, methodological safeguards, and confrontation with competing explanations.

Misconception

Does Postpositivism Say There Is No Objective Reality?

Generally, no. Postpositivist accounts typically retain a reality independent of researchers while arguing that our knowledge of it is inevitably imperfect. This distinguishes postpositivism from positions that conceptualize reality and knowledge in substantially different ways.

Misconception

Is Positivism Old and Postpositivism Modern?

The historical development is relevant, but this framing is too crude. Positivist ideas continue to influence contemporary research, and the labels themselves encompass diverse philosophical positions. Researchers should compare their assumptions rather than selecting a paradigm according to which one sounds newer.

Does Postpositivism Mean Researchers Cannot Reach Conclusions?

No. Fallibility is not paralysis. Researchers can judge that evidence supports one explanation better than another and can make appropriately qualified conclusions. The claim remains open to revision if better evidence becomes available.

No. Quantitative methods can be used within different philosophical traditions. A paradigm should be identified through assumptions about reality, knowledge, inquiry, values, and inference rather than inferred automatically from the use of numerical data.

06 · What This Means for You

Are You Actually Positivist or Postpositivist?

If you are trying to identify your own position, do not start with your statistical software. Start with what you believe your evidence can establish.

You may be closer to positivism if you place strong emphasis on researcher independence, objective measurement, controlled observation, and the possibility of establishing reliable knowledge about an independently existing reality.

You may be closer to postpositivism if you also assume an external reality but emphasize that measurements, observations, models, and researchers are fallible and that scientific conclusions remain provisional even when strongly supported.

A simple decision framework

If you assume reality exists independently and can be objectively investigated through appropriately controlled empirical procedures
Examine whether a positivist account accurately represents your assumptions.
If you assume an external reality but believe knowledge of it is necessarily incomplete and fallible
Postpositivism may describe your position more accurately.
If you emphasize uncertainty, competing explanations, measurement limitations, critical testing, and revisability
Those commitments are strongly compatible with postpositivist reasoning.
If your study uses quantitative methods but you have not examined its philosophical assumptions
Do not infer either paradigm from the data type alone.
If your study does not require an explicit paradigm declaration
Avoid attaching either label merely as a methodological formality.

The distinction matters most when it changes how you understand evidence and justify your claims. If you describe your research as postpositivist, the language of your conclusions should reflect that position. Evidence may support, challenge, or refine an explanation. It rarely licenses "this study proves" as casually as that phrase sometimes appears in student manuscripts.

Before naming your philosophical position, check:
Do I assume that a reality exists independently of the researcher?
Do I believe researchers can know that reality directly, or only imperfectly through fallible observations and measurements?
How do I understand objectivity: as researcher neutrality, as a methodological goal pursued through critical safeguards, or in another way?
Do I treat measurements as direct representations of phenomena or as imperfect indicators requiring validation and scrutiny?
Do I actively consider alternative explanations and evidence that could challenge my preferred hypothesis?
Does my reporting communicate uncertainty and the provisional nature of empirical conclusions?
Am I choosing the paradigm from its philosophical assumptions rather than because my study happens to be quantitative?
Have I checked how authoritative methodological literature in my field defines positivism and postpositivism?

If your research assumes an external reality while emphasizing uncertainty, critical testing, alternative explanations, imperfect measurement, and conclusions that remain open to revision, postpositivism may describe your position more accurately than a stronger positivist account. The distinction should ultimately improve how you justify evidence and calibrate your claims, not merely provide another label for the methodology chapter.
