Should Publication Potential Ever Break a Tie Between Research Ideas?

Publication potential can reasonably influence a choice between research ideas that are already scientifically strong and closely matched. It becomes problematic when likely publishability starts replacing importance, rigor, or feasibility as the reason for doing the research.

01 · The Question

What If One Good Research Idea Looks Easier to Publish?

Suppose two research ideas survive your scientific comparison. Both address worthwhile questions. Both are feasible, ethical, and methodologically defensible. Their expected contributions are sufficiently close that neither clearly deserves priority.

There is one noticeable difference: one appears to have stronger publication prospects.

Perhaps its topic currently attracts more journal attention. Perhaps it fits the scope of several suitable journals particularly well. Maybe the study could produce a clearer manuscript, while the other addresses a valuable but specialized question with fewer obvious publication venues.

Should that influence which project you choose?

Publication is a legitimate part of scholarly communication, but likely publishability is not the same thing as scientific value. The distinction becomes especially important when publication potential is used as a tie-breaker.

Publication Potential Can Break a Close Tie, but It Should Not Create One

In Brief

Publication potential can reasonably influence the choice when two research ideas are already scientifically worthwhile and genuinely close, but it should usually function as a secondary consideration rather than determine which questions deserve to be studied.

A project should not become preferable merely because it appears easier to publish in a prestigious or fashionable venue. First compare the importance, expected contribution, rigor, feasibility, ethics, and other scientific considerations; then consider publication prospects if a meaningful tie remains.

03 · What You Need to Know

Where Publication Potential Belongs in a Research Decision

Publication Is Part of Research Communication, Not the Definition of Research Value

Publishing research allows findings, methods, arguments, and evidence to enter the scholarly record and become available for scrutiny and use. Wanting a completed study to reach an appropriate audience is therefore entirely reasonable.

But a study does not become scientifically important simply because editors or readers may find its topic attractive.

The distinction is visible in formal scientific assessment. The current NIH peer-review framework evaluates research through the importance of the proposed work, rigor and feasibility of the approach, and whether sufficient expertise and resources exist to carry it out. Importance includes significance and innovation. Likely acceptance by a prestigious journal is not a criterion for establishing scientific merit.

This does not mean publication considerations are irrelevant to researchers. It means they answer a different question.

Scientific merit Concerns whether the study addresses a worthwhile question and can produce rigorous, meaningful knowledge.
Publication potential Concerns how plausibly the resulting work may fit suitable scholarly outlets and reach the intended research audience.

First Establish That Both Ideas Are Worth Doing

Before publication prospects become a tie-breaker, the alternatives should have survived the more consequential comparison.

Ask whether each addresses an important or relevant question, has a defensible contribution, can be studied ethically, has an appropriate methodological path, and is realistically feasible. Frameworks such as FINER similarly emphasize feasibility, interest, novelty, ethics, and relevance when evaluating whether a research question is worth answering.

If one idea is clearly stronger on these fundamentals, a perceived difference in publication potential should not casually erase that advantage.

This is why publication prospects belong relatively late in the broader process of choosing among worthwhile research ideas.

“Publishable” Is Not One Thing

Researchers sometimes speak about publication potential as though a project either has it or does not. In reality, the concept may refer to several different considerations.

You might be asking whether suitable journals exist, whether the subject falls within their scope, whether the likely contribution is substantial enough for the intended audience, whether the study design can meet disciplinary expectations, or whether the topic currently receives considerable editorial attention.

These are not equivalent.

An idea may have modest prospects at a highly selective general journal but excellent prospects in a reputable specialist journal whose readership is more appropriate. Another may concern a fashionable topic but produce a contribution too weak to justify publication anywhere demanding.

Journal Prestige Should Not Be Confused With Publication Potential

A particularly risky version of the decision is not “Which study can be communicated effectively?” but “Which topic gives me the best chance of publishing in a high-status journal?”

Journal prestige is an imperfect proxy for the value of an individual study. Editorial scope, audience, selectivity, novelty expectations, article type, and many other factors influence publication decisions. A strong study may be unsuitable for one journal and highly appropriate for another.

Research selection therefore becomes distorted when the imagined prestige of a future venue starts defining which questions are worth asking.

Watch Out

Do not reverse the research process by choosing a question primarily because you believe a particular journal will like it. Journal fit matters when communicating research, but anticipated editorial preference is a fragile foundation for deciding what knowledge deserves to be produced.

Publication Potential Can Matter When Dissemination Is Part of the Project's Value

There are situations in which publication considerations have a legitimate connection to research impact.

If two projects are otherwise comparable but one is more likely to reach the scholarly community that needs the evidence, that difference may matter. A study addressing a question of interest to an identifiable research audience may have a clearer dissemination path than an equally rigorous project whose contribution is difficult to position or communicate.

Even here, distinguish the ability to reach an appropriate audience from the probability of entering a prestigious journal. The former concerns dissemination. The latter may concern career incentives as much as scientific communication.

Career Constraints Are Real, but They Should Be Named Honestly

Researchers do not make decisions outside academic systems. Doctoral candidates may need publications before graduation. Early-career researchers may face appointment or promotion expectations. Funded projects may include dissemination commitments. Research groups may depend partly on publication records when competing for future opportunities.

Those constraints can make publication potential strategically relevant.

The important step is to identify the consideration accurately. If you prefer an idea because it appears more likely to generate a manuscript within a required timeframe, say that this is a career or project constraint. Do not automatically reinterpret it as evidence that the research question is scientifically more important.

Predicted Publication Potential Is Uncertain

A project that looks highly publishable before data collection may not remain so.

Results may be ambiguous. Recruitment may fail. A competing paper may appear. Editorial priorities can shift. The eventual findings may prove less consequential than expected. Conversely, a specialized study may produce an unexpectedly important result.

Publication potential is therefore partly prospective judgment rather than a stable property of a research idea.

This uncertainty should make you cautious about sacrificing a substantially better scientific question for an imagined publication advantage.

Do Not Prefer Questions Because They Promise a Particular Result

Publication potential becomes especially problematic when it is interpreted as the likelihood of obtaining a statistically significant, positive, dramatic, or otherwise attention-grabbing finding.

A research question should be worthwhile regardless of which scientifically plausible result emerges. Designing research around a desired result can distort question selection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting.

The relevant question is whether the study could generate informative evidence, not whether you expect the evidence to tell the most publishable story.

A Tie-Breaker Should Actually Be Breaking a Tie

Before invoking publication potential, make sure the scientific comparison really is close.

If Idea A addresses a substantially more important question and has a credible design, while Idea B is attractive mainly because its topic is currently fashionable, there is no genuine tie for publication potential to resolve.

Conversely, if the alternatives are comparable after applying the criteria that matter when evaluating research ideas, then secondary considerations become more reasonable.

The same logic applies to personal interest when scientifically strong ideas remain closely matched. A tie-breaker should distinguish strong alternatives, not rehabilitate a weaker one.

Publication Potential May Be One Tie-Breaker Among Several

Even when the scientific case is close, publication prospects do not automatically become the next decisive criterion.

You might also consider which idea better develops useful expertise, supports future studies, fits available collaboration, makes better use of an unusual dataset, aligns with an important institutional or community need, or simply sustains greater intellectual interest.

Publication potential belongs within this group of contextual considerations rather than sitting automatically above them.

When Publication Potential Can Reasonably Influence the Choice

Hypothetical Example

Two strong studies with different dissemination prospects

Suppose an early-career researcher has two hypothetical ideas about AI-supported assessment. Both address defensible questions, use appropriate methods, can be completed with available resources, and appear capable of making contributions of similar importance.

Idea A concerns a highly specialized assessment practice relevant to a small research community. Idea B addresses a broader unresolved question that fits the scope of several appropriate journals and is likely to interest a wider scholarly audience.

Publication potential influences the decision here because the projects were already defensible alternatives. It did not substitute for scientific merit.

Common Mistakes When Thinking About Publishability

Misconception

The Most Publishable Idea Is the Best Research Idea

Publication prospects reflect journal fit, audience, editorial priorities, contribution, and other factors. They are not an independent measure of the scientific importance or quality of the research question.

Misconception

A Trendy Topic Is Easier to Publish

Popular topics may attract editorial interest, but they also attract substantial research activity. A crowded literature can increase the contribution needed to distinguish a new study. Topic popularity alone says little about whether a manuscript will be accepted.

Misconception

A High-Impact Journal Makes the Research More Important

Journal placement and research importance should not be treated as equivalent. The scientific contribution belongs to the study; the journal is a venue through which that study is communicated.

Misconception

A Study Is More Publishable If It Is Likely to Produce a Significant Result

A worthwhile research question should remain informative across scientifically plausible outcomes. Choosing questions because you expect desirable results can create poor incentives for study design, analysis, and reporting.

That position is unnecessarily rigid. When alternatives are scientifically comparable, dissemination opportunities and legitimate career or project constraints can reasonably influence sequencing. The problem is allowing publishability to replace the scientific rationale.

Let Publication Prospects Influence Sequencing, Not Scientific Worth

When publication potential appears to favor one research idea, determine first whether you are looking at a genuine tie or allowing publication incentives to create the appearance of one.

A simple decision framework

If one idea is clearly stronger scientifically
Do not reject that advantage merely because another topic appears easier to publish.
If two ideas are scientifically comparable
Publication and dissemination prospects may reasonably become secondary criteria.
If publication potential means journal prestige
Separate prestige from audience fit and ask whether the anticipated venue actually improves communication of the research.
If publication is important because of a career or project requirement
Treat that constraint explicitly rather than presenting it as evidence that the research question is scientifically superior.
If your prediction depends on obtaining an exciting result
Do not use that expectation as a reason to choose the study.

A useful test is to imagine that both studies eventually appear in appropriate, reputable journals. If you would still consider one question substantially more worth answering, publication potential probably should not be the deciding factor.

Before choosing the more publishable idea, check:
Are the competing ideas genuinely comparable in scientific importance and expected contribution?
Are both ethically acceptable, methodologically defensible, and realistically feasible?
What exactly do you mean by greater publication potential: journal fit, audience reach, topic popularity, prestige, or something else?
Have you checked the current aims and scope of plausible journals rather than relying on assumptions?
Would you still choose the idea if both studies were eventually published in equally appropriate venues?
Does your prediction of publishability depend on obtaining a particular result?
Are career or institutional publication requirements influencing the decision, and have you identified them explicitly?
Have you considered other legitimate tie-breakers, including personal interest, future research direction, data opportunities, and collaboration?

Questions About Publication Potential and Research Selection

Is it wrong to choose a research topic because it is publishable?

Not necessarily. Publication prospects can reasonably influence a choice among scientifically worthwhile alternatives. The concern arises when expected publishability becomes the primary justification for studying a weak or relatively unimportant question.

Should I identify possible journals before starting the study?

It can be useful to understand the scholarly audiences and publication venues relevant to your work. Journal policies and scopes can change, however, so an early target should be treated as provisional rather than as a guarantee of eventual fit or acceptance.

Should I choose a topic that is currently popular?

Popularity alone is a weak selection criterion. A heavily studied topic may still contain important unresolved questions, but the idea should be justified by the contribution it could make rather than by attention to the topic itself.

Can publication potential matter more for an early-career researcher?

Career requirements may make publication strategy more consequential, but that does not change what constitutes scientific merit. Among strong alternatives, however, publication timing, audience, and realistic dissemination opportunities can reasonably affect which project is pursued first.

Does a larger potential audience mean a research idea is better?

No. Audience size and scientific value are different. Highly specialized research can make an important contribution to a small field, while a broadly interesting topic can support a relatively minor study.

What if one idea fits a prestigious journal particularly well?

Treat that as uncertain publication strategy rather than evidence that the idea is scientifically superior. Journal fit can change, editorial decisions are unpredictable, and appropriate specialist publication may communicate another study more effectively.

What if publication potential is the only meaningful difference?

When two projects remain genuinely comparable, publication prospects can help determine which one you pursue first; they should not determine which knowledge is worth producing in the first place.
