Can Lack of Qualitative Understanding Be a Gap in a Mostly Quantitative Literature?

A topic may have abundant quantitative evidence while important experiences, meanings, processes, or contextual explanations remain poorly understood. Learn when qualitative inquiry can address that gap.

01 · The Question

What If We Have Plenty of Numbers but Still Do Not Understand the Experience?

You review the literature and find surveys, experiments, correlations, regression models, effect estimates, and perhaps several meta-analyses. Researchers have quantified the phenomenon extensively.

Yet some questions remain surprisingly difficult to answer. How do participants experience what is happening? Why do they respond in particular ways? What meanings do they attach to the phenomenon? How does context shape their decisions? What processes occur that the available variables do not capture well?

If the literature is already substantial but predominantly quantitative, can the lack of qualitative understanding itself constitute a research gap?

Yes, When the Missing Knowledge Requires More Than Numerical Estimation

In Brief

Lack of qualitative understanding can constitute a genuine research gap when a predominantly quantitative literature establishes patterns, relationships, frequencies, or effects but does not adequately explain participants' experiences, meanings, perspectives, processes, or contextual influences that matter to the research problem.

The gap is not created merely because few qualitative studies exist. You need to identify what remains poorly understood and explain why qualitative inquiry is suited to generating the kind of knowledge the existing quantitative evidence does not provide.

03 · What You Need to Know

When Does a Quantitative Literature Need Qualitative Understanding?

Quantitative Evidence Can Be Extensive Without Answering Every Kind of Question

Quantitative research can estimate prevalence, compare groups, test associations, evaluate interventions, model relationships, estimate effects, and address many other important questions. A strong quantitative literature should not be described as deficient simply because it is quantitative.

The issue is whether the unresolved question requires a different kind of evidence.

Suppose surveys consistently show that students with lower perceived usefulness are less likely to adopt an educational technology. That finding describes a pattern. It may not reveal how students decide that a technology is useful, which experiences shape that judgment, what they mean by "usefulness," or why similar ratings lead to different decisions in different circumstances.

Those questions move from estimating a relationship toward understanding experience, interpretation, and process.

Qualitative Research Is Not Simply Quantitative Research Without Numbers

Qualitative inquiry encompasses several traditions and methodological approaches designed to investigate meaning, experience, social processes, practices, interactions, contexts, and other phenomena that may not be adequately represented through predetermined numerical variables.

Depending on the question, researchers might use interviews, focus groups, observations, documents, audiovisual materials, or other qualitative sources. The analytical approach might involve thematic analysis, grounded theory, phenomenological analysis, qualitative content analysis, narrative approaches, ethnography, case study methods, or another tradition appropriate to the research purpose.

The method should follow the question. "I will conduct interviews because previous studies used surveys" is not yet a methodological justification.

A Qualitative Gap Is About Missing Understanding, Not Missing Methodology

This distinction is central.

Weak justification Most previous studies are quantitative, so a qualitative study is needed.
Stronger justification Existing quantitative studies identify a consistent pattern, but provide limited evidence about how participants interpret and respond to the circumstances producing that pattern.

The first statement identifies a methodological imbalance. The second identifies a knowledge problem.

A research gap should ultimately concern what remains insufficiently understood. Methodological diversity matters when it enables researchers to answer that unresolved question.

Qualitative Inquiry Can Help Explain an Established Quantitative Pattern

One particularly strong rationale arises when quantitative studies consistently identify a phenomenon but its explanation remains incomplete.

Suppose repeated surveys show that university students who report greater concern about generative AI are less likely to use it for academic work. The numerical association may be well established. Yet "concern" could involve academic integrity, inaccurate outputs, privacy, dependency, fairness, surveillance, instructor expectations, or several issues simultaneously.

Qualitative research can investigate how students understand these concerns, how they weigh them against perceived benefits, and how those judgments influence actual decisions.

This may overlap with a missing mechanism when the central question concerns the process through which one phenomenon contributes to another.

Qualitative Research Can Reveal What Predetermined Variables Miss

Quantitative instruments usually require researchers to decide in advance which constructs, variables, response options, or outcomes will be measured. That is often exactly what a well-specified quantitative study needs.

But predetermined measures can also constrain what participants are able to communicate. A questionnaire may ask about usefulness, ease of use, trust, and intention while leaving little opportunity for participants to raise an issue the researchers did not anticipate.

Qualitative designs can be useful when the relevant categories themselves remain uncertain, contested, context-dependent, or insufficiently developed.

What quantitative evidence may establish What qualitative inquiry may help illuminate
How common an experience is How people understand and describe that experience
Whether two variables are associated How participants perceive the process connecting them
Whether groups differ How contextual or experiential differences may contribute to the pattern
Whether an intervention changes an outcome How participants experience the intervention and which aspects they perceive as consequential
Which survey response is most common Why respondents interpret or choose particular responses
Which predictors are statistically important How those factors operate within participants' everyday circumstances

These are complementary possibilities, not rigid divisions. Quantitative methods can investigate mechanisms and context, while qualitative research can identify patterns across participants. The important issue is what kind of evidence the specific question requires.

Qualitative Evidence Can Expose Problems With the Categories Used in Quantitative Research

Sometimes the gap is not merely that participants' voices are absent. Qualitative inquiry may reveal that the categories structuring the quantitative literature do not adequately represent how the phenomenon operates.

For example, researchers may repeatedly divide technology use into "academic" and "non-academic" categories. Interviews could reveal practices that participants themselves do not experience as fitting neatly into either category. That finding may prompt refinement of constructs, instruments, hypotheses, or theoretical models.

In this way, qualitative research can contribute to conceptual development rather than merely providing illustrative quotations beside quantitative results.

Qualitative Research Can Be Particularly Valuable When Findings Conflict

Suppose quantitative studies produce conflicting findings. One possibility is random variation or methodological difference. Another is that an effect depends on contextual conditions not adequately represented in the existing models.

Qualitative research may help identify how implementation, participant interpretation, institutional conditions, or other processes differ across contexts. It will not automatically resolve the statistical inconsistency, but it can generate plausible explanations that subsequent research can examine more directly.

Participant Experience Can Matter Even When Outcomes Are Already Known

An intervention may improve an outcome while remaining burdensome, confusing, stigmatizing, inaccessible, or difficult to sustain. Conversely, an intervention with modest average effects may be experienced as highly valuable by particular participants for reasons not represented in the primary quantitative outcome.

Qualitative evidence can therefore broaden understanding of what an intervention or phenomenon means to the people experiencing it.

This is especially important when decisions involve acceptability, feasibility, implementation, equity, or user experience rather than effectiveness alone.

A Qualitative Gap Is Not the Same as a Missing Outcome

Suppose quantitative studies of online learning measure academic performance but rarely examine student well-being. That may be a missing-outcome gap.

If well-being has already been measured quantitatively but researchers do not understand how students experience the conditions influencing it, the unresolved problem may be qualitative understanding.

The distinction concerns the question: are you missing evidence about whether an outcome occurs, or understanding of how participants experience and interpret the phenomenon?

Mixed Methods May Be Useful, but It Is Not Automatically Required

Identifying a qualitative gap does not mean every study must become mixed methods. A standalone qualitative study may be entirely appropriate when the unresolved question is qualitative.

Mixed-methods research becomes useful when answering the research problem genuinely requires integrating quantitative and qualitative evidence. For example, researchers may first identify a quantitative pattern and then use qualitative inquiry to investigate possible explanations, or they may use qualitative findings to develop measures that are subsequently tested quantitatively.

The NIH Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research describes mixed methods as intentional integration of quantitative and qualitative approaches to provide a richer understanding than either approach alone can provide for questions that require such integration.

Watch Out

Do not add interviews to a quantitative study merely to make the methodology look more comprehensive. Mixed methods requires a reason for integrating the evidence, not simply the presence of two data types.

Qualitative Research Still Requires Methodological Rigor

A qualitative gap is not permission to conduct a few informal interviews and report interesting quotations. Qualitative studies require methodological coherence, transparent sampling and data collection, appropriate analysis, reflexivity where relevant, and reporting sufficient for readers to understand how interpretations were developed.

The EQUATOR Network identifies several reporting guidelines relevant to qualitative research, including the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research and the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research for interviews and focus groups.

Different qualitative traditions have different assumptions and standards. Researchers should follow guidance appropriate to the methodology rather than treating "qualitative" as one homogeneous method.

How Do You Establish That Qualitative Understanding Is Actually Missing?

Do not search only for papers with qualitative in the title. Search the phenomenon together with terms such as interview, focus group, experience, perception, perspective, narrative, ethnography, observation, thematic analysis, and discipline-specific terminology.

Examine systematic and scoping reviews where available. Determine not merely how many qualitative studies exist but what questions they address, which participants and settings they represent, and what aspects of the phenomenon remain insufficiently understood.

Your gap statement should describe the missing understanding. "Most studies have used quantitative methods" is descriptive. "Existing surveys consistently identify low trust as a barrier to adoption, but provide limited insight into how students construct trust judgments when evaluating AI-generated academic information" identifies a researchable qualitative gap.

When a Survey Tells You That Students Are Concerned but Not What the Concern Means

Hypothetical Example

Understanding Why Students Avoid Generative AI

Suppose numerous university surveys find that concerns about generative AI are associated with lower intention to use it for academic work. Researchers repeatedly measure perceived risk, trust, usefulness, and behavioral intention.

What is already known Quantitative studies consistently identify an association between students' concerns and their willingness to use generative AI.
What remains unclear Predetermined survey categories provide limited evidence about what students themselves understand as risky or how different concerns enter their decisions.
Why qualitative inquiry fits Interviews can allow students to describe concrete experiences, judgments, institutional expectations, and decision processes in their own terms.
What the analysis may contribute The study can identify recurring meanings and processes that clarify the quantitative pattern and potentially reveal issues omitted from existing instruments.
What researchers should not infer The qualitative study does not estimate how prevalent each identified explanation is across all university students unless an appropriate quantitative design subsequently addresses that question.

The contribution comes from answering a question the surveys were not designed to answer, not from replacing quantitative evidence with interviews.

Common Mistakes When Claiming a Qualitative Research Gap

Misconception

Most Studies Are Quantitative, So a Qualitative Study Is Automatically Needed

Methodological imbalance alone is not enough. Identify the experience, meaning, process, context, or conceptual uncertainty that existing quantitative evidence does not adequately address.

Misconception

Qualitative Research Explains Why Quantitative Relationships Occur

It can provide evidence about experiences and processes that helps develop explanations, but causal claims should remain aligned with the design. Participants' accounts of why something happens are valuable evidence, not automatic proof of a causal mechanism.

Misconception

Qualitative Research Is Mainly for Giving Participants a Voice

Participant perspectives can be central, but qualitative inquiry can also develop concepts, examine processes, study interactions, understand contexts, generate theory, and challenge assumptions embedded in existing frameworks.

Misconception

A Few Interviews Are Enough Because Qualitative Research Uses Small Samples

Sample adequacy depends on the research question, qualitative approach, population heterogeneity, sampling strategy, depth of data, and analytic purpose. Small samples can be appropriate, but "qualitative" is not a methodological exemption from justifying the sample.

Many qualitative designs seek depth, conceptual insight, contextual understanding, or transferability rather than statistical population estimation. Claims should match the sampling strategy and methodological purpose.

Mixed methods requires intentional integration of qualitative and quantitative components to address a research problem. Two disconnected components do not become methodologically integrated merely because they appear in the same project.

How to Decide Whether Missing Qualitative Understanding Justifies Your Study

Start with what the quantitative literature can already tell you. Then identify the question it cannot answer adequately.

A simple decision framework

If quantitative evidence establishes a pattern but the processes or meanings behind it remain poorly understood
Qualitative inquiry may address a consequential explanatory or interpretive gap.
If predetermined measures may omit important participant perspectives or categories
An exploratory qualitative design may help refine how the phenomenon is conceptualized.
If the unresolved question concerns prevalence, magnitude, or population-level association
Qualitative research alone may not provide the evidence required for that particular question.
If substantial qualitative evidence already addresses the relevant experience or process
Do not claim a qualitative gap merely because quantitative studies numerically dominate the literature.
If both numerical patterns and experiential explanation are required
Consider whether purposeful integration of quantitative and qualitative evidence is warranted.

The strongest justification therefore moves from evidence to unanswered question to method: quantitative research establishes what is already known, a particular form of understanding remains missing, and qualitative inquiry is appropriate for generating that understanding.

Before Claiming a Qualitative Gap in a Quantitative Literature

Before writing the gap statement, check:
Identify what the existing quantitative literature already establishes rather than dismissing it as insufficient in general.
Specify the experience, meaning, process, perspective, context, or conceptual issue that remains inadequately understood.
Search specifically for existing qualitative research rather than assuming methodological absence from the studies you first encountered.
Explain why qualitative evidence is suited to the unresolved question.
Select a qualitative methodology and data source that fit the research purpose rather than defaulting automatically to interviews.
Avoid promising statistical population estimates from a design not intended to produce them.
Use mixed methods only when integration of qualitative and quantitative evidence genuinely improves the answer to the research question.
Phrase the gap as missing understanding rather than simply missing qualitative studies.

Frequently Asked Questions About Qualitative Gaps

Is the absence of qualitative studies automatically a research gap?

No. A gap exists when an important question remains inadequately answered and qualitative inquiry is suited to addressing it. Some research questions can be answered appropriately without qualitative evidence.

Can qualitative research explain quantitative findings?

It can help illuminate how participants experience, interpret, or respond to the processes associated with a quantitative pattern. Whether that constitutes a causal explanation depends on the design and evidence supporting the claim.

Do I need mixed methods if the literature is mostly quantitative?

No. A standalone qualitative study may be appropriate if the unresolved question concerns meaning, experience, process, or context. Mixed methods is useful when the research problem requires integration of qualitative and quantitative evidence.

Can interviews reveal a research gap that surveys missed?

They can reveal concepts, experiences, interpretations, or processes not represented in existing questionnaires. Those findings may generate new questions or suggest revisions to quantitative measures, although their prevalence would require appropriate quantitative investigation.

Does qualitative research need a theoretical framework?

Not every qualitative design uses theory in the same way. Some studies apply an existing framework, others develop theory, and some adopt methodological traditions with different conceptual commitments. The role of theory should fit the research question and qualitative approach.

Can qualitative research address conflicting quantitative findings?

Potentially. It can investigate contextual differences, implementation processes, participant interpretations, and other factors that may help explain inconsistency. It does not automatically determine which quantitative estimate is correct.

Do not justify qualitative research merely because most previous studies used numbers. Identify what those studies already tell us, specify the understanding they cannot provide, and choose qualitative inquiry because it fits that unresolved question.
