When Does a Quantitative Literature Need Qualitative Understanding?
Quantitative Evidence Can Be Extensive Without Answering Every Kind of Question
Quantitative research can estimate prevalence, compare groups, test associations, evaluate interventions, model relationships, estimate effects, and address many other important questions. A strong quantitative literature should not be described as deficient simply because it is quantitative.
The issue is whether the unresolved question requires a different kind of evidence.
Suppose surveys consistently show that students with lower perceived usefulness are less likely to adopt an educational technology. That finding describes a pattern. It may not reveal how students decide that a technology is useful, which experiences shape that judgment, what they mean by "usefulness," or why similar ratings lead to different decisions in different circumstances.
Those questions move from estimating a relationship toward understanding experience, interpretation, and process.
Qualitative Research Is Not Simply Quantitative Research Without Numbers
Qualitative inquiry encompasses several traditions and methodological approaches designed to investigate meaning, experience, social processes, practices, interactions, contexts, and other phenomena that may not be adequately represented through predetermined numerical variables.
Depending on the question, researchers might use interviews, focus groups, observations, documents, audiovisual materials, or other qualitative sources. The analytical approach might involve thematic analysis, grounded theory, phenomenological analysis, qualitative content analysis, narrative approaches, ethnography, case study methods, or another tradition appropriate to the research purpose.
The method should follow the question. "I will conduct interviews because previous studies used surveys" is not yet a methodological justification.
A Qualitative Gap Is About Missing Understanding, Not Missing Methodology
This distinction is central.
Weak justification
Most previous studies are quantitative, so a qualitative study is needed.
Stronger justification
Existing quantitative studies identify a consistent pattern, but provide limited evidence about how participants interpret and respond to the circumstances producing that pattern.
The first statement identifies a methodological imbalance. The second identifies a knowledge problem.
A research gap should ultimately concern what remains insufficiently understood. Methodological diversity matters when it enables researchers to answer that unresolved question.
Qualitative Inquiry Can Help Explain an Established Quantitative Pattern
One particularly strong rationale arises when quantitative studies consistently identify a phenomenon but its explanation remains incomplete.
Suppose repeated surveys show that university students who report greater concern about generative AI are less likely to use it for academic work. The numerical association may be well established. Yet "concern" could involve academic integrity, inaccurate outputs, privacy, dependency, fairness, surveillance, instructor expectations, or several issues simultaneously.
Qualitative research can investigate how students understand these concerns, how they weigh them against perceived benefits, and how those judgments influence actual decisions.
This may overlap with a missing mechanism when the central question concerns the process through which one phenomenon contributes to another.
Qualitative Research Can Reveal What Predetermined Variables Miss
Quantitative instruments usually require researchers to decide in advance which constructs, variables, response options, or outcomes will be measured. That is often exactly what a well-specified quantitative study needs.
But predetermined measures can also constrain what participants are able to communicate. A questionnaire may ask about usefulness, ease of use, trust, and intention while leaving little opportunity for participants to raise an issue the researchers did not anticipate.
Qualitative designs can be useful when the relevant categories themselves remain uncertain, contested, context-dependent, or insufficiently developed.

These are complementary possibilities, not rigid divisions. Quantitative methods can investigate mechanisms and context, while qualitative research can identify patterns across participants. The important issue is what kind of evidence the specific question requires.
Qualitative Evidence Can Expose Problems With the Categories Used in Quantitative Research
Sometimes the gap is not merely that participants' voices are absent. Qualitative inquiry may reveal that the categories structuring the quantitative literature do not adequately represent how the phenomenon operates.
For example, researchers may repeatedly divide technology use into "academic" and "non-academic" categories. Interviews could reveal practices that participants themselves do not experience as fitting neatly into either category. That finding may prompt refinement of constructs, instruments, hypotheses, or theoretical models.
In this way, qualitative research can contribute to conceptual development rather than merely providing illustrative quotations beside quantitative results.
Qualitative Research Can Be Particularly Valuable When Findings Conflict
Suppose quantitative studies produce conflicting findings. One possibility is random variation or methodological difference. Another is that an effect depends on contextual conditions not adequately represented in the existing models.
Qualitative research may help identify how implementation, participant interpretation, institutional conditions, or other processes differ across contexts. It will not automatically resolve the statistical inconsistency, but it can generate plausible explanations that subsequent research can examine more directly.
Participant Experience Can Matter Even When Outcomes Are Already Known
An intervention may improve an outcome while remaining burdensome, confusing, stigmatizing, inaccessible, or difficult to sustain. Conversely, an intervention with modest average effects may be experienced as highly valuable by particular participants for reasons not represented in the primary quantitative outcome.
Qualitative evidence can therefore broaden understanding of what an intervention or phenomenon means to the people experiencing it.
This is especially important when decisions involve acceptability, feasibility, implementation, equity, or user experience rather than effectiveness alone.
A Qualitative Gap Is Not the Same as a Missing Outcome
Suppose quantitative studies of online learning measure academic performance but rarely examine student well-being. That may be a missing-outcome gap.
If well-being has already been measured quantitatively but researchers do not understand how students experience the conditions influencing it, the unresolved problem may be qualitative understanding.
The distinction concerns the question: are you missing evidence about whether an outcome occurs, or understanding of how participants experience and interpret the phenomenon?
Mixed Methods May Be Useful, but It Is Not Automatically Required
Identifying a qualitative gap does not mean every study must become mixed methods. A standalone qualitative study may be entirely appropriate when the unresolved question is qualitative.
Mixed-methods research becomes useful when answering the research problem genuinely requires integrating quantitative and qualitative evidence. For example, researchers may first identify a quantitative pattern and then use qualitative inquiry to investigate possible explanations, or they may use qualitative findings to develop measures that are subsequently tested quantitatively.
The NIH Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research describes mixed methods as intentional integration of quantitative and qualitative approaches to provide a richer understanding than either approach alone can provide for questions that require such integration.
Watch Out
Do not add interviews to a quantitative study merely to make the methodology look more comprehensive. Mixed methods requires a reason for integrating the evidence, not simply the presence of two data types.
Qualitative Research Still Requires Methodological Rigor
A qualitative gap is not permission to conduct a few informal interviews and report interesting quotations. Qualitative studies require methodological coherence, transparent sampling and data collection, appropriate analysis, reflexivity where relevant, and reporting sufficient for readers to understand how interpretations were developed.
The EQUATOR Network identifies several reporting guidelines relevant to qualitative research, including the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research and the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research for interviews and focus groups.
Different qualitative traditions have different assumptions and standards. Researchers should follow guidance appropriate to the methodology rather than treating "qualitative" as one homogeneous method.
How Do You Establish That Qualitative Understanding Is Actually Missing?
Do not search only for papers with qualitative in the title. Search the phenomenon together with terms such as interview, focus group, experience, perception, perspective, narrative, ethnography, observation, thematic analysis, and discipline-specific terminology.
Examine systematic and scoping reviews where available. Determine not merely how many qualitative studies exist but what questions they address, which participants and settings they represent, and what aspects of the phenomenon remain insufficiently understood.
Your gap statement should describe the missing understanding. "Most studies have used quantitative methods" is descriptive. "Existing surveys consistently identify low trust as a barrier to adoption, but provide limited insight into how students construct trust judgments when evaluating AI-generated academic information" identifies a researchable qualitative gap.
