You Have a Topic. But Do You Have a Research Problem?
You may know what you want to study: artificial intelligence in education, employee burnout, urban flooding, antibiotic resistance, renewable energy, or social media use. That gives you a research topic, but it does not necessarily give you a reason for conducting a particular study.
The difficult step is moving from “I am interested in this subject” to “There is something specific within this subject that we need to understand better.” The first identifies your territory. The second begins to identify your research problem.
This distinction matters because a topic can generate thousands of possible studies. A research problem narrows those possibilities by identifying the particular issue, uncertainty, contradiction, limitation, or knowledge need that warrants investigation.

How a Broad Topic Becomes a Researchable Problem
A Topic Identifies the Territory
A topic tells a reader what general area your research concerns. “Online learning,” for example, is a topic. So are “teacher burnout,” “microplastics,” “consumer trust in artificial intelligence,” and “mental health among university students.”
Even a more focused phrase such as “student engagement in online university courses” may still function primarily as a topic. It identifies a phenomenon, population, and context, but it does not yet tell us what about student engagement requires investigation.
This is why choosing a topic is not the same as identifying a problem worth investigating. A topic tells you where to look. It does not by itself establish what needs to be studied there.
A Research Problem Provides the Reason for the Study
A research problem identifies something more specific that warrants systematic investigation. Depending on the field and study, that might be an important unanswered question, inconsistent findings, an inadequate explanation, an unresolved practical difficulty, a limitation in existing methods, or a phenomenon that is poorly understood in a relevant context.
The word problem can therefore be misleading. In research, it does not necessarily mean that something is broken or harmful. The problem may simply be that existing knowledge cannot yet adequately explain something that matters.
Research topic
The subject or area you want to investigate: for example, student engagement in online learning.
Research problem
The specific issue or knowledge need within that area that warrants investigation: for example, uncertainty about why students with similar access and course conditions show substantially different patterns of engagement.
A Topic Does Not Automatically Contain a Problem
Suppose you are interested in remote work and employee productivity. You could investigate dozens of questions: interruptions at home, managerial practices, collaboration tools, job autonomy, commuting time, employee well-being, productivity measurement, or differences among occupations.
Simply announcing “remote work and productivity” does not explain which of these issues requires investigation. Before designing a study, you need to determine what is insufficiently understood or unresolved and why resolving that uncertainty matters.
This is the key transition: stop asking only “What do I want to study?” and begin asking “What, specifically, do we need to understand about it that we do not adequately understand already?”
Start by Learning What Is Already Known
You cannot reliably identify a research problem from the topic alone. You need context. That normally means reading relevant literature and, for applied problems, examining credible evidence about what is happening in practice.
Your initial reading serves several purposes. It helps you understand how researchers define the phenomenon, what explanations have already been proposed, what evidence exists, where findings agree or conflict, which populations and settings have been studied, and what limitations previous researchers have identified.
This step can overturn your initial assumptions. Something that initially appears unexplored may already have an extensive literature. Conversely, a familiar topic may contain a specific unresolved issue that becomes visible only after you understand the existing evidence.
Look for Tension, Not Merely an Empty Space
Researchers sometimes reduce problem identification to finding a “gap in the literature.” Gaps can matter, but absence alone is not enough. The fact that nobody appears to have studied a particular combination of variables, population, or location does not automatically make that combination important.
A stronger problem has a reason behind the missing knowledge. Perhaps previous studies produce conflicting results. Perhaps an established explanation does not account for observations in a particular setting. Perhaps a widespread intervention is being used without sufficient evidence about its effects. Perhaps researchers can measure a phenomenon, but existing methods systematically miss an important dimension of it.
In other words, ask not only “What hasn't been studied?” but also “What remains unresolved, and what difference would understanding it make?”
State What Is Known, What Is Uncertain, and Why It Matters
A useful working research problem can often be developed by answering three questions:
- What do we currently know? Establish the relevant background using evidence rather than assumptions.
- What remains uncertain or problematic? Identify the specific limitation, contradiction, unexplained observation, practical difficulty, or knowledge need.
- Why does that matter? Explain the consequence for knowledge, theory, policy, professional practice, a population, or future research.
If you cannot yet answer the second question, you probably still have a topic rather than a sufficiently defined problem. If you can answer the second but not the third, you may have identified something unknown without establishing why it deserves investigation.
Narrow the Problem Without Shrinking It Arbitrarily
A problem may initially be much larger than one project can address. “University students have mental health difficulties” is too expansive to provide much direction. Narrowing might require identifying the particular phenomenon, population, context, relationship, mechanism, or uncertainty that your study can reasonably investigate.
The goal is not simply to make the wording shorter. It is to establish a boundary around the part of the larger problem that your study can meaningfully examine. If your initial problem would require several disciplines, populations, years of data collection, or many independent questions to address properly, you may need to reduce the problem to a defensible part that one study can investigate.
Do Not Decide on the Problem Before Looking at the Evidence
Your first idea should be treated as provisional. Literature searching may show that the problem is different from what you initially assumed. It may be well understood in one population but not another, supported by weak evidence rather than absent evidence, or dependent on conditions you had not considered.
That is normal. A research problem is often refined iteratively rather than discovered in a single moment. You move between reading, questioning, narrowing, and checking your assumptions. In some cases, the evidence should lead you to revise the research problem substantially.
The Problem Comes Before the Final Research Question
A research problem and a research question are also different. The problem explains why investigation is needed; the research question specifies what the study will attempt to answer.
For example, a problem might concern uncertainty about which features of asynchronous online courses contribute to sustained student engagement. A subsequent research question could ask whether, how, or under what conditions particular course features are associated with engagement in a defined population.
You should therefore resist jumping directly from a broad topic to a polished question. Understanding the problem first helps you formulate a question that responds to an actual knowledge need rather than merely producing something that sounds researchable.
04 · A Practical Example
From “AI in Education” to a Specific Research Problem
Hypothetical Example
Narrowing a Broad Interest in Generative AI
Imagine that a graduate student begins with the topic “generative AI in higher education.” The topic is current and interesting, but it is far too broad to establish what the student actually needs to investigate.
1. Start with the topic Generative AI in higher education.
2. Choose a more focused area How university students use generative AI when completing written assignments.
3. Examine existing evidence The student reviews relevant research and finds that studies describe patterns of AI use, but the evidence available for the student's intended context does not adequately explain how students decide when AI assistance becomes inappropriate or conflicts with academic expectations.
4. Identify the unresolved issue There is uncertainty about how students interpret the boundary between acceptable assistance and unacceptable reliance on generative AI when institutional guidance leaves room for interpretation.
5. Establish why the uncertainty matters Understanding that decision process could help researchers better explain student behavior and could inform how educators communicate expectations about appropriate AI use.
6. Define the research problem The problem is no longer “generative AI in education.” It is the specific lack of adequate understanding of how a defined group of students interprets and applies boundaries around acceptable generative-AI assistance in a particular academic context.
This example is intentionally hypothetical. The important point is the reasoning process, not the particular topic. Notice that the researcher did not simply make the topic narrower by adding a population. The researcher identified an uncertainty that would need to be established through actual evidence before it could legitimately be claimed as a research problem.
06 · What This Means for You
What to Do When You Currently Have Only a Topic
If you can name your subject but cannot explain what remains unresolved within it, do not force a problem statement yet. Treat the topic as a starting point for investigation rather than as a finished research idea.
A simple topic-to-problem framework
If you know only the broad subject
Read enough foundational and recent literature to understand the main concepts, debates, findings, and practical concerns.
If you have found something apparently unknown
Check whether the absence is real and whether knowing the answer would make a meaningful difference.
If you have identified a practical difficulty
Separate the observable symptoms from the underlying issue and determine which part can be investigated systematically.
If your problem is still very broad
Narrow the population, context, phenomenon, relationship, mechanism, or unresolved aspect without reducing the problem to an arbitrary niche.
If the literature challenges your original assumption
Revise the problem rather than defending the idea you started with.
At the end of this process, try explaining your problem without mentioning your proposed method. If you can clearly state what is known, what remains unresolved, and why resolving it matters, you are much closer to a defensible research problem.
Watch Out
Do not manufacture a gap merely to preserve a preferred topic. If careful reading shows that your supposed problem has already been adequately addressed, that is useful information. Refine the problem, look for a genuinely unresolved aspect, or reconsider the project.
07 · A Quick Checklist
Have You Moved From a Topic to a Research Problem?
Before treating your topic as a research problem, check:
I can state the general topic separately from the specific problem.
I have reviewed relevant literature rather than assuming the problem exists.
I can explain what is already known about the issue.
I can identify exactly what remains uncertain, unresolved, contradictory, inadequately explained, or problematic.
I have evidence appropriate to my field showing that this problem is real.
I can explain why addressing the problem would matter to a relevant scholarly, professional, policy, or affected community.
The problem is focused enough that one study could meaningfully investigate part or all of it.
I am willing to revise the problem if further evidence contradicts my initial assumptions.
