What If You Search for Your Topic and Find Almost Nothing?
You care about a research topic, begin searching the literature, and encounter an unexpected problem: there is very little to read. Perhaps you find only a handful of directly relevant studies. Maybe most of them come from different countries, populations, disciplines, or settings. In the most extreme case, you struggle to find research that addresses your exact question at all.
At first, this can sound promising. If few researchers have studied the topic, perhaps you have found an obvious research gap. Then the practical concerns arrive. How will you build the rationale? What literature will support the theoretical or conceptual framing? How will you choose appropriate methods? And why has so little research been conducted in the first place?
Scarcity can signal opportunity, but it can also signal a search problem, an excessively narrow question, a genuinely emerging field, or a problem that is difficult to investigate. Before treating “very little literature” as either good or bad news, determine what the scarcity actually means.

Why a Research Topic May Appear to Have Very Little Literature
First determine whether the literature is actually scarce
Finding few papers in your first search tells you how that search performed. It does not yet tell you how much relevant knowledge exists.
Your terminology may be too narrow. Researchers in another discipline may use a different name for the same construct. A technology may have changed names over time. A population may be described using broader terminology. Relevant studies may investigate the underlying phenomenon without using the exact phrase in your proposed title.
Before concluding that a field is understudied, vary your keywords and synonyms, search major concepts separately and in combinations, examine the terminology used by relevant papers, follow their references, and look for reviews or evidence syntheses that can reveal neighbouring literatures.
This is particularly important because an apparently understudied topic is not automatically worth studying. You first need reasonable confidence that the apparent absence is real.
Your exact question can be new even when its components are not
Suppose you want to study how doctoral students in a particular country evaluate AI-generated feedback during dissertation writing. You may find almost no studies matching that exact combination of technology, population, activity, and location.
That does not mean you have no literature.
There may be substantial research on AI-generated feedback, feedback literacy, doctoral writing, trust in automated systems, academic writing support, human-AI interaction, and related educational contexts. Those literatures can help establish concepts, mechanisms, methods, and unresolved questions without pretending that they directly answer your particular question.
The literature review should therefore distinguish between evidence directly addressing your question and adjacent evidence that helps explain or frame it.
A very specific search can manufacture scarcity
The more conditions you require a paper to satisfy simultaneously, the fewer papers you should expect to find. If your topic specifies one technology, one population, one institution type, one country, one outcome, and one narrow period, searching only for studies containing every element may produce almost nothing.
This can create an artificial research gap. The apparent gap exists because the search reproduces the full specificity of your proposed study rather than because the underlying phenomenon is poorly understood.
Watch Out
“No one has studied exactly X among population Y in location Z” is not automatically a meaningful research gap. Ask whether population Y or location Z gives you a substantive reason to expect different mechanisms, experiences, outcomes, or implications. Geographic novelty alone does not necessarily establish contribution.
Very little literature may indicate an emerging topic
Some questions are genuinely new. A technological development, policy change, social phenomenon, scientific discovery, or newly recognised problem may appear faster than a mature scholarly literature can develop around it.
In such cases, waiting for a large literature would rather defeat the purpose of studying an emerging phenomenon.
Research in an early-stage area may need to draw more heavily on relevant theory, adjacent evidence, exploratory designs, descriptive work, qualitative inquiry, methodological development, or carefully justified analogies with established phenomena. The appropriate approach depends on the question.
The fact that a topic is new can explain the scarcity. It still does not establish that every possible question about the new topic is important.
Scarce literature can also signal that the question is difficult to research
Sometimes few studies exist for a less encouraging reason. The relevant population may be extremely difficult to recruit. Essential data may be confidential or proprietary. The phenomenon may be rare. Measurement may be poorly developed. Ethical constraints may limit possible designs. The required study may be prohibitively expensive.
These are not reasons to dismiss the topic automatically. They are reasons to investigate feasibility before becoming attached to it.
If the field has remained small for years, ask experienced researchers and examine existing papers for recurring methodological obstacles. What looks like an untouched opportunity may be a problem that several researchers have already discovered is exceptionally difficult to study.
You need enough literature to support the study, not necessarily a large literature on the exact question
Research builds on existing knowledge, but that foundation does not have to consist of dozens of studies that duplicate your proposed question.
You may need literature to establish the significance of the broader problem, define important constructs, justify assumptions, inform methodology, identify relevant theory, and show what related evidence already suggests. Different parts of that foundation can come from different but genuinely relevant bodies of scholarship.
This is quite different from padding a literature review with vaguely related papers merely to make it longer. Adjacent literature should have a clear intellectual function in the argument.
A small evidence base limits what you can reasonably infer from it
Cochrane's guidance on evidence synthesis notes that when few studies are identified, there may be limited opportunity to answer a review question through an informative synthesis. Cochrane also cautions that identifying an evidence gap can result in an “empty” review when the question cannot be answered using existing evidence.
The broader lesson applies beyond systematic reviews. If only a few studies exist, avoid presenting tentative patterns as though they represent a settled field. The scarcity itself increases uncertainty.
Likewise, distinguish absence of evidence from evidence supporting absence. If researchers have barely investigated a phenomenon, you generally cannot infer from that scarcity that the phenomenon does not occur or that an intervention has no effect.
A scoping review may help when you do not yet understand the shape of the literature
When terminology is inconsistent, evidence is dispersed across disciplines, or you are uncertain what kinds of studies exist, a scoping review may be useful. PRISMA describes scoping reviews as a form of evidence synthesis used to assess the scope of literature on a topic and, among other purposes, help determine whether a systematic review is warranted.
That does not mean every student who finds few papers should immediately conduct a scoping review. A careful exploratory search may be sufficient for topic selection. If evidence mapping itself becomes part of your research, however, use an appropriate review methodology and reporting guidance rather than simply calling a broad literature search a scoping review.
Little literature changes the type of question that may be realistic
A mature literature may support precise hypothesis testing, comparative questions, meta-analysis, or attempts to resolve well-defined disagreements. A very immature literature may require more foundational work.
For example, it may be premature to ask which of several interventions works best when researchers have not yet established how the phenomenon is experienced, how it should be measured, or whether the proposed interventions are feasible.
This does not mean early research must always be descriptive. It means the sophistication of the question should match the maturity of the knowledge base.
The absence of literature is not itself the justification for the study
“Few studies exist” establishes scarcity. You still need to establish consequence.
Why does the missing knowledge matter? What uncertainty does it leave unresolved? Who is affected by that uncertainty? What theoretical, methodological, practical, or policy decision could better evidence inform?
Cochrane's guidance on implications for future research similarly encourages specificity about what additional research is needed rather than treating “more research is needed” as sufficient. A meaningful gap identifies what is missing and why filling it would improve knowledge or decision-making.
That is the difference between finding an empty space in the literature and identifying a research problem.
