What Is the Relationship Between Research and University Teaching?

Research and teaching are often described as mutually reinforcing university functions, but the connection is neither automatic nor uniformly positive. What matters is how research is incorporated into curricula, teaching practices, student inquiry, and the wider educational environment.

01 · The Question

Does Being an Active Researcher Make Someone a Better University Teacher?

Universities often present teaching and research as naturally connected. Faculty members conduct research, bring new knowledge into their classrooms, and introduce students to the process through which disciplines develop. Students, meanwhile, may participate in projects, conduct theses, analyze evidence, or learn through inquiry.

This produces an appealing picture in which better research leads to better teaching and teaching generates new questions for research. Higher education scholarship commonly refers to these connections as the research-teaching nexus or teaching-research nexus.

The difficulty is that the relationship is more complicated than the slogan suggests. Research and teaching can reinforce each other, but they can also compete for faculty time and institutional resources. Research expertise does not automatically produce pedagogical expertise, and students do not automatically benefit simply because their university employs productive researchers.

The more useful question is therefore not whether research and teaching are connected in principle, but how universities can create connections that actually improve students' educational experiences.

Research and Teaching Can Reinforce Each Other, but the Connection Must Be Created

In Brief

Research and university teaching can strengthen each other when current scholarship, research processes, unresolved questions, authentic evidence, and opportunities for inquiry are deliberately integrated into students' learning, but research activity alone does not guarantee better teaching.

The relationship varies by discipline, institution, curriculum, faculty role, and student level. Evidence on the research-teaching nexus is therefore better understood as showing several possible connections rather than a universal rule that more research necessarily produces better education.

03 · What You Need to Know

There Is More Than One Way to Connect Research and Teaching

The Research-Teaching Nexus Is a Family of Relationships

The research-teaching nexus refers broadly to connections between research and teaching in higher education. The British Academy describes a strong nexus as an extensive, visible, institutionally supported set of productive and potentially bidirectional connections between the two activities.

Higher education scholarship nevertheless treats the nexus as complex and contested. A systematic review of reviews published in 2022 found substantial diversity in how the relationship is conceptualized, implemented, and evaluated. Another systematic review concluded that teaching and research are linked at a broad level but that the connection needs to be nurtured locally.

This matters because saying that a university “integrates research and teaching” can refer to very different educational practices.

Students Can Learn About Existing Research

At the most familiar level, university teaching draws on research findings. Faculty members use scholarly literature, recent studies, theories, systematic reviews, datasets, or examples from contemporary research to inform what they teach.

This can help students encounter knowledge as something that develops rather than as a collection of permanent facts. A lecturer might explain how a theory changed after new evidence appeared, compare competing interpretations, or show why a question remains unresolved.

The educational benefit depends on what happens with that material. Simply adding recent journal articles to a reading list does not necessarily produce deeper learning. Students need opportunities to interpret, evaluate, compare, and question the evidence.

Students Can Learn About How Research Is Conducted

Research can enter teaching through methods as well as findings. Students may learn how researchers formulate questions, construct arguments, design studies, collect evidence, analyze data, manage uncertainty, evaluate competing explanations, and communicate conclusions.

This approach can make disciplinary knowledge more transparent. Instead of seeing only the finished conclusion, students encounter the processes by which a field decides whether a claim is credible.

Such learning is particularly important when students will later need to evaluate evidence professionally, even if they never become full-time researchers.

Students Can Learn Through Inquiry

A stronger connection occurs when students themselves engage in inquiry. They may investigate open-ended problems, work with authentic datasets, reproduce parts of an analysis, conduct field observations, design studies, undertake laboratory investigations, or complete research projects.

Healey's influential work on linking research and teaching argues that students may gain particularly substantial benefits when they participate actively in research and inquiry rather than functioning only as an audience for faculty research.

The difference is significant. Hearing a researcher explain how evidence is produced and being required to make defensible decisions with incomplete evidence are quite different educational experiences.

Students Can Participate in Actual Research

Some students move beyond classroom inquiry and join genuine research projects. They may work as research assistants, participate in laboratory or field teams, contribute to data collection or analysis, undertake supervised thesis research, or collaborate on scholarly outputs where their contributions warrant it.

These experiences can expose students to aspects of research that structured classroom activities cannot fully reproduce: uncertainty, failed approaches, changing research plans, collaboration, ethical decisions, peer criticism, and the sometimes humbling discovery that the data have not read your hypothesis.

This is one reason universities may encourage faculty and students to participate in research. Faculty research can create environments in which students encounter knowledge production directly rather than solely through finished publications.

Research Can Keep Teaching Connected to a Developing Discipline

Research-active faculty may bring familiarity with current literature, methodological debates, emerging problems, and unresolved questions into their teaching. Their research networks can also expose students to external scholars, laboratories, professional communities, or collaborative projects.

This potential benefit is particularly relevant in fields where knowledge, technologies, methods, or professional practices change rapidly. Faculty engagement with research can help prevent curricula from becoming detached from current disciplinary conversations.

Yet research activity should not be treated as the only route to current expertise. Faculty may remain professionally current through scholarship, clinical or professional practice, continuing education, industry engagement, or other forms of intellectual activity depending on the field.

Teaching Can Also Influence Research

The relationship need not flow only from research to teaching. Teaching can expose researchers to questions they have not considered, force them to explain assumptions that remain implicit within specialist communities, reveal misunderstandings that deserve investigation, and create opportunities for educational research.

Students can ask surprisingly productive questions precisely because they do not yet share all the assumptions of experienced researchers. Explaining a concept to a class can also reveal that what seemed perfectly clear in a manuscript becomes considerably less clear when thirty people look puzzled at once.

This bidirectional possibility is part of why some scholars prefer the language of a nexus rather than treating teaching as simply the downstream transmission of research.

Research Productivity Does Not Automatically Produce Teaching Quality

A critical distinction is necessary. Being an accomplished researcher and being an accomplished teacher require overlapping but different capabilities.

A researcher may possess deep disciplinary knowledge yet struggle to explain it to novices. Effective teaching also involves curriculum design, assessment, feedback, communication, knowledge of learners, pedagogical judgment, and the ability to create productive learning environments.

Conversely, an excellent teacher may not maintain a large research portfolio. The quality of someone's teaching should therefore not be inferred simply from publication counts, grant income, citations, or scholarly reputation.

Research expertise Capability to formulate and investigate questions, work with evidence, contribute to knowledge, and participate in a scholarly field.
Teaching expertise Capability to design and facilitate learning, explain difficult ideas, assess understanding, provide useful feedback, and support students' intellectual development.

The two can interact productively without being interchangeable.

Research and Teaching Can Also Compete

Faculty time is finite. Designing a study, managing a grant, supervising researchers, conducting fieldwork, analyzing data, writing manuscripts, and responding to reviewers can consume substantial time. So can preparing courses, meeting students, assessing work, and providing feedback.

Institutional reward structures can intensify this tension. If promotion, status, or workload relief strongly favor research outputs while teaching receives comparatively little recognition, faculty members may have rational reasons to prioritize research even when the institution simultaneously claims that teaching is central to its mission.

Research-teaching scholarship has therefore cautioned against romanticizing the nexus. Institutional conditions can strengthen or weaken the relationship, and scarcity of time and resources matters.

Watch Out

Do not assume that students automatically benefit from attending a research-intensive university. Institutional research strength and students' actual exposure to research are different things. The educational question is whether students encounter research meaningfully through curriculum, inquiry, mentorship, participation, or other intentional mechanisms.

The Appropriate Relationship Depends on the Program

A first-year undergraduate course does not need to resemble a doctoral research seminar. Research integration should reflect students' prior knowledge, educational goals, disciplinary practices, and developmental readiness.

Early undergraduate students might begin by evaluating evidence or undertaking structured inquiry. Advanced students may design increasingly independent projects. Master's students may engage in research or applied inquiry appropriate to the degree. Doctoral researchers are generally expected to develop the capability to conduct original research with increasing independence.

The connection between research and education therefore becomes progressively different as students move toward graduate and postgraduate research training.

The Same Research Topic Can Be Taught at Different Levels of Engagement

Hypothetical Example

A Faculty Member Teaches From an Ongoing Research Area

Suppose a faculty member researches how students interact with an emerging educational technology. The topic also appears in one of the faculty member's courses.

Research-informed teaching Students read and compare recent studies, including evidence that challenges popular claims about the technology.
Learning about research The class examines how different studies operationalized learning outcomes and why their conclusions differ.
Inquiry-based learning Students receive an anonymized dataset and must develop and defend an analysis appropriate to a specified question.
Authentic research participation A smaller group of appropriately prepared students later joins a supervised project investigating a genuinely unanswered question.

All four activities connect research and teaching, but they do so differently. The strongest educational design is not necessarily the one that makes every student a coauthor. It is the one that uses research in ways appropriate to the intended learning outcomes and students' stage of development.

Common Misunderstandings About Research and Teaching

Misconception

Good Researchers Are Automatically Good Teachers

Research expertise can enrich teaching, but teaching requires pedagogical capabilities that research productivity does not measure. Institutions should support development in both areas rather than treating excellence in one as proof of excellence in the other.

Research-Based Teaching Means Teaching Your Own Research

The relationship is broader. Students can engage with research literature, methods, evidence, scholarly debate, inquiry, or authentic projects regardless of whether the material comes from their instructor's own research program.

Students Benefit Simply by Being Near Famous Researchers

Proximity is not an educational intervention. Students benefit when research becomes accessible through curricula, mentorship, inquiry, research experiences, supervision, or meaningful scholarly interaction.

They can compete for time, attention, funding, and institutional recognition. A productive nexus requires organizational choices that make connection feasible rather than assuming faculty members can indefinitely increase both activities without trade-offs.

Design the Connection Instead of Assuming It Exists

For faculty members and academic leaders, the practical task is to decide what connection with research would actually improve a particular educational experience.

A simple decision framework

If students need current disciplinary knowledge
Use contemporary research evidence and competing scholarly perspectives rather than relying exclusively on settled textbook accounts.
If students need to understand how knowledge is produced
Make research questions, methods, evidence, uncertainty, interpretation, and limitations visible in the curriculum.
If students need analytical independence
Use inquiry-based activities in which they must make and defend decisions rather than simply reproduce conclusions.
If students are ready for authentic research
Provide appropriately supervised opportunities to participate in genuine projects or conduct independent investigations.
If faculty research demands are crowding out teaching
Treat the problem as a workload and institutional-design issue rather than assuming the two activities are naturally synergistic.

The broader institutional benefits associated with research are therefore more likely to reach students when universities intentionally connect their research capability with curriculum and educational opportunity.

When connecting research and university teaching, check:
Are students encountering current evidence and unresolved questions rather than only established conclusions?
Do students learn how claims in the discipline are generated, tested, interpreted, and challenged?
Are there opportunities for students to analyze evidence or undertake inquiry themselves?
Are authentic research opportunities appropriate to students' preparation and educational level?
Do faculty members receive sufficient time and support to connect research and teaching meaningfully?
Is research expertise being complemented by appropriate pedagogical development?
Can the program identify specific learning outcomes that the research-teaching connection is intended to support?
Is there evidence that students actually experience the institution's research environment rather than merely being told that it exists?

What is the research-teaching nexus?

The research-teaching nexus is a broad term for the relationships between research and teaching in higher education. It can include teaching current research findings, teaching research processes, learning through inquiry, student participation in research, and ways in which teaching influences research.

Does research improve university teaching?

Research and university teaching can reinforce one another when students encounter current scholarship, learn how knowledge is produced, participate in inquiry, and, when appropriate, contribute to authentic research; simply employing productive researchers does not create this connection automatically.

Universities should therefore treat the research-teaching nexus as something to design and support rather than something that exists by definition. The relevant question is not how much research surrounds students, but how meaningfully that research becomes part of their education.
