Can Preparing the Ground for Another Study Be Enough?
Some research projects are not designed to provide the final answer to the question researchers ultimately care about. Instead, they solve a problem that must be addressed before that question can be investigated properly.
A study might establish whether participants can be recruited, determine whether an intervention can be delivered, develop a workable data-collection procedure, identify an appropriate outcome, produce preliminary information needed to design a larger investigation, or reveal that the proposed study is not feasible at all.
If the main result is simply that better research can now happen, has the first study made a substantial contribution, or was it merely preparation?

Some Research Contributes by Making the Next Question Answerable
Research questions sometimes have prerequisites
Imagine that researchers want to conduct a large evaluation of a complex intervention. Before committing substantial resources, they may need to know whether enough participants can be recruited, whether participants will remain in the study, whether the intervention can be delivered consistently, whether the proposed measures are workable, or whether data can be collected as planned.
Those questions are not merely administrative. If the answers determine whether the main study can produce interpretable evidence, they are part of responsible research design.
A smaller preliminary investigation can therefore contribute by reducing uncertainty about how the larger study should be conducted, whether it should be modified, or whether it should proceed at all.
Enabling research should solve a specific obstacle
The phrase future research is easy to use vaguely. Almost any paper can generate another question. That does not mean every paper is valuable because it enables future research.
A stronger claim identifies what was previously impossible, unreliable, excessively risky, or insufficiently understood and shows how the study changed that situation.
Suggesting future research
The study identifies another question that researchers could investigate.
Enabling future research
The study produces evidence, methods, measurements, resources, or design knowledge that makes a consequential later investigation possible or substantially more informative.
The second is a more substantive contribution because the earlier research changes the feasibility or quality of what can be done next.
Feasibility research can prevent a larger study from failing
Feasibility studies provide a particularly clear example. Before launching a large trial or other resource-intensive investigation, researchers may examine whether key elements of the proposed research process can actually work.
Published work examining feasibility studies has described their potential to reduce research waste by identifying problems such as inadequate recruitment, retention, or intervention acceptability before resources are committed to a full-scale trial. A useful feasibility result may therefore be that the larger study should not proceed in its proposed form.
That outcome can be valuable. Avoiding a predictably unsuccessful large study saves resources and may also prevent participants from being recruited into research unlikely to answer its intended question.
Watch Out
A feasibility study should answer feasibility questions. Treating a small preliminary study as though it were a definitive effectiveness study can produce conclusions the design was never intended or adequately powered to support.
A future study may need better measurement before it needs more participants
Sometimes the obstacle is not feasibility but measurement. Researchers may know what phenomenon they want to investigate but lack a sufficiently valid, reliable, sensitive, or contextually appropriate way to measure it.
Developing or evaluating that measurement can be a substantial contribution because later empirical claims will depend on it. A larger sample cannot compensate for a measure that does not adequately represent the construct researchers intend to study.
When this is the primary contribution, the value lies in improving methods or measurement rather than directly answering the later substantive question.
Enabling research can provide design information
Future studies sometimes depend on quantities or patterns that are initially uncertain. Researchers may need plausible information about recruitment rates, attrition, variability, event rates, implementation conditions, or other design parameters before they can make defensible decisions about a larger study.
Preliminary research can provide some of this information, but it should be interpreted cautiously. Small pilot studies, for example, can provide imprecise estimates. Researchers should avoid treating unstable preliminary estimates as though they were definitive characteristics of the population.
The value of preliminary evidence lies in how appropriately it informs the next design, not in pretending that a small study has already answered the main research question.
Enabling research can reveal that the planned study should change
One of the most useful outcomes of preliminary research is discovering a problem before the main study begins.
Perhaps recruitment is much slower than expected. A proposed survey item is routinely misunderstood. Participants find an intervention unacceptable. A data source contains too much missing information. The proposed follow-up period is unrealistic.
These findings may initially look disappointing because the original plan cannot proceed unchanged. Yet they provide precisely the information needed to redesign the study before a much larger investment is made.
This resembles the broader value of showing that an approach does not work as expected . Learning that a research procedure is infeasible can be useful when the evidence prevents researchers from repeating the same mistake at greater scale.
The future study itself needs to be worth enabling
There is an important limitation. Making another study possible is not automatically valuable if the later study addresses a trivial, redundant, or poorly justified question.
Enabling research inherits some of its significance from the research it enables.
If a methodological study removes a major obstacle to answering an important unresolved question, its contribution may be substantial. If it merely makes it easier to conduct another study that adds little to existing knowledge, the argument is weaker.
This is why researchers should consider existing evidence before launching preliminary work. Evidence synthesis can help determine whether the proposed future question remains genuinely unresolved and whether another study is needed at all.
Enabling research can reduce rather than increase research waste
There is a subtle tension here. Preliminary studies consume resources too. Conducting pilots, feasibility studies, or methodological investigations automatically before every larger study could itself become wasteful.
The relevant question is whether important uncertainty exists that the preliminary research can resolve.
When is enabling research most defensible?
If a consequential future study cannot yet be designed responsibly
Research that resolves the specific design obstacle may be justified.
If feasibility is genuinely uncertain
A feasibility study may prevent a larger study from failing or reveal how it needs to change.
If an adequate method or measurement already exists
Developing another one requires a stronger justification than simply wanting a new tool.
If existing evidence has already resolved the eventual research question
Making another study easier to conduct may add little and could contribute to unnecessary duplication.
Good enabling research therefore does not create another study for its own sake. It removes a real constraint on worthwhile inquiry.

Define Exactly What the Next Study Cannot Yet Do
If you want to justify research primarily by its contribution to future studies, begin with the obstacle rather than the vague promise of “providing a basis for future research.”
What exactly prevents the important next study from being conducted well?
A simple decision framework
If the obstacle is feasibility
Study recruitment, retention, acceptability, implementation, data collection, or whichever feasibility uncertainty actually threatens the future design.
If the obstacle is measurement
Develop or evaluate the measure needed before substantive conclusions can be made credibly.
If the obstacle is insufficient design information
Collect the specific preliminary evidence required for defensible planning while acknowledging its uncertainty.
If the obstacle is conceptual
Clarify constructs, mechanisms, propositions, or distinctions sufficiently for subsequent empirical testing.
If you cannot identify a genuine obstacle
Question whether a preliminary study is necessary rather than adding another research stage by default.
Then explain the pathway explicitly: current limitation → enabling contribution → improved future study .
This is a stronger argument than saying the research “will serve as a reference for future researchers.” Almost any publication could be described that way. A meaningful enabling contribution specifies what future researchers can now do more credibly, efficiently, safely, or rigorously because the present study exists.
That contribution can remain valuable even when nobody immediately uses the results . The relevant test is whether the study has created a credible capability or reduced an important uncertainty, not whether the next research team has already acted on it.

Is Your Study Genuinely Enabling Future Research?
Before claiming that future research is the main contribution, check:
Can you identify the important future research question that the present study helps make answerable?
Have you verified that the future question is not already adequately resolved by existing evidence?
Can you name the specific methodological, practical, technical, measurement, or evidential obstacle that currently prevents a strong future study?
Is the present study designed specifically to resolve or reduce that obstacle?
Will the study produce something concrete that subsequent researchers can use, rather than merely recommending more research?
If this is feasibility or pilot work, are you keeping feasibility conclusions separate from definitive claims about effectiveness?
Would a negative feasibility finding still provide useful information about whether or how the larger study should proceed?
Is the enabling study itself proportionate to the uncertainty it is intended to resolve?
