A relevant review article can reveal studies that your database search missed, especially when terminology, indexing, or search coverage differs. Learn how to use reviews as discovery maps without treating their references as automatically complete or eligible.

01 · The Question

If Someone Has Already Reviewed the Topic, Should You Search Their References?

You finish a database search and then find a review article that closely matches your topic. Its reference list contains studies you recognize, but it also includes several papers that never appeared in your search results.

That immediately raises two questions. Did your search miss important research? And can you simply use the studies identified by the review?

Review articles can be extremely useful discovery sources because they bring together literature found through another set of search terms, databases, eligibility decisions, citation trails, and sometimes expert knowledge. But a review's reference list is not an automatically complete or error-free catalogue of studies relevant to your own question. It is another evidence source to search critically.

Use the review to generate candidate studies, then retrieve and assess the original publications yourself. A study's inclusion in another review does not automatically make it eligible for yours, and the review itself should not be assumed to contain every relevant study.

Why Review Articles Can Expose Literature Your Search Missed

A Review Represents Another Search Through the Literature

A well-conducted review is more than a long article with many references. Its authors have attempted to identify and synthesize a body of research according to a particular question and methodology.

Their search may differ from yours in consequential ways. They may have searched databases you did not use, employed alternative terminology, searched an earlier period more effectively, examined trial registers or other sources, contacted experts, or used supplementary citation-searching techniques.

The review can therefore expose publications outside the retrieval pathway created by your own search strategy.

This does not necessarily mean your search was badly designed. Literature searches retrieve records through particular combinations of database coverage, indexing, terminology, search syntax, and search methods. Another competent search can reach relevant records through a different route.

Start With Reviews That Actually Match Your Question

Not every review mentioning your topic is equally useful for study discovery.

A review is a stronger candidate when its research question, population, phenomenon or intervention, outcomes, context, and study types substantially overlap with yours. Its publication date also matters. An older review may provide excellent historical coverage but cannot contain studies published after its search was completed.

Before mining its references, determine what the review was actually designed to include. A paper that appears highly relevant from the title may use eligibility criteria quite different from your own.

Read the Methods Before You Read the Reference List as a Search Result

If the review reports a reproducible search, examine its methods.

Look for the databases searched, date ranges, search dates, terminology, controlled vocabulary, language restrictions, publication restrictions, study-design criteria, supplementary search methods, and other eligibility decisions that could explain differences between its evidence set and yours.

Systematic reviews may provide full search strategies in the article, appendices, supplementary files, protocols, or related records. PRISMA 2020 and PRISMA-S emphasize transparent reporting of information sources and search strategies, which can make well-reported reviews especially useful for understanding how their studies were found.

You are not reading these details merely to judge the review. You are looking for information that can improve your own search.

Compare the Review's Search Terms With Yours

A review may contain terminology you did not think to search.

Compare its search concepts, synonyms, abbreviations, spelling variants, subject headings, and database-specific terminology with your strategy. If unfamiliar terms appear, investigate whether they represent your concept or a related but distinct construct.

This can be particularly productive when you are trying to find studies that use terminology different from yours.

Do not copy an older review's search strategy wholesale. Database interfaces change, controlled vocabularies evolve, indexing changes, and the review's question may differ subtly from yours. Treat the strategy as evidence about useful terminology, then adapt and test it for your own purpose.

Review Reference Lists Provide a Form of Backward Discovery

Once you have established that a review is relevant, its references can be searched for candidate studies.

Conceptually, you are moving backward from the review into earlier literature it cites. This resembles backward citation searching, although formal citation-searching terminology distinguishes several possible seed-reference and search procedures.

A review may be particularly efficient because it can cite many studies concerning the same research problem. Instead of beginning with one primary study, you begin with a publication whose purpose was to synthesize a body of literature.

However, not every reference in the review is an included study. Reviews also cite background literature, methodological guidance, theories, reporting standards, related reviews, and excluded or contextual studies. If your objective is to identify the review's included primary studies, use its study tables, included-study lists, supplementary files, or other explicit reporting where available rather than assuming that every bibliography entry belongs to the evidence synthesis.

Included-Study Lists Are Often More Useful Than the Entire Bibliography

For systematic reviews and similar evidence syntheses, authors often identify included studies explicitly in tables, appendices, supplementary materials, or study-characteristics sections.

These lists can provide a focused set of candidate records for comparison with your own search results.

Suppose a closely aligned review included 42 studies and your database search retrieved only 31 of them. The 11 unmatched studies deserve investigation. Some may fall outside your eligibility criteria, but others may reveal weaknesses in your search terminology, database coverage, date limits, or indexing assumptions.

This makes a prior review useful not merely as a source of papers but as a diagnostic tool for your search strategy.

A Missed Study Can Teach You Why It Was Missed

When you discover a relevant study through a review that your own search failed to retrieve, do not simply add it to your library and move on.

Ask why your search missed it.

Identify the missed study Confirm that the original publication genuinely meets your relevance or eligibility criteria.
Check database coverage Determine whether the study is indexed in the databases you searched.
Check terminology Compare its title, abstract, keywords, and subject headings with the concepts in your search strategy.
Check search restrictions Determine whether date, language, document-type, field, or other limits prevented retrieval.
Revise if necessary If the missed paper exposes a genuine search weakness, test whether revising the strategy retrieves it without making the search unmanageably imprecise.

This diagnostic process is more valuable than treating reference checking as a patch added after the “real” search. A missed relevant study can reveal an entire vocabulary, database, or literature branch that your strategy did not represent.

Reviews Can Help You Find Older Literature

Modern terminology can make older studies difficult to retrieve. A recent review may already have connected contemporary concepts to papers written under historical terminology.

Inspect which older works the review includes or repeatedly discusses. Retrieve them and examine the vocabulary they use. Those terms can then support new searches for additional older research.

This approach can help you find important older research from before modern terminology became established.

Again, the review is the bridge rather than the final authority. Read the original older publications before making claims about what they investigated or found.

Reviews Can Point Toward Seminal or Foundational Research

Reviews frequently discuss the historical development of a field and identify publications regarded as foundational. When several independent reviews repeatedly point to the same works, those references can become useful candidates for closer investigation.

This can help when you are trying to identify potentially seminal and important studies.

But repeated appearance in reviews is a signal, not proof. A conventional citation can propagate through a field because later authors repeatedly cite the same familiar source. Retrieve the original paper, trace its predecessors where necessary, and determine what contribution it actually made.

Forward-Search the Review as Well

A review has a built-in temporal limitation: its search ends at some point before publication.

Forward citation searching from the review can help identify later publications that cite it. These may include newer primary studies, updated reviews, methodological critiques, replications, or research that extends the evidence base beyond the review's search date.

Not every citing paper will be relevant, so the results still require screening.

This can be especially useful when a high-quality review closely matches your topic but is several years old. Its included studies provide a map of earlier literature, while its forward citation network can help you investigate what appeared afterward.

An Updated Review May Already Exist

Before investing substantial effort in extending an older review manually, check whether the review has been updated, superseded, corrected, or incorporated into a newer synthesis.

Search the review title, author group, registry or protocol information where relevant, and later citing literature. Some review programs publish formal updates, while other research groups produce new reviews with expanded questions or modified eligibility criteria.

A newer review does not automatically make the older one useless. The older review may contain historical detail or search information omitted from the update. But knowing the update exists can prevent unnecessary duplication.

Review Articles Can Also Inherit Search Limitations

A review's reference list reflects what its authors found and chose to include.

If their search omitted a relevant database, used restrictive terminology, applied language restrictions, stopped at an early date, or missed an entire disciplinary vocabulary, their synthesis can reproduce those limitations.

This is one reason a review should not become your only route to primary studies.

Watch Out

A review article is not a master list of everything known about a topic. Its evidence base is bounded by its research question, search methods, eligibility criteria, search date, database coverage, and screening decisions.

Do Not Cite the Review as Though You Read the Primary Study

Review articles are valuable secondary sources, but they should not be used to create the appearance that you examined research you never retrieved.

If you need to describe what a primary study did, found, measured, or concluded, retrieve the original publication whenever possible. Verify the information there and cite the source appropriate to the claim you are making.

The review remains appropriate when your claim concerns the review's synthesis, pooled analysis, interpretation, methods, or conclusions.

This distinction also protects you from perpetuating citation errors. Secondary sources can simplify, reinterpret, or occasionally misreport details from original studies. Following the reference back to the primary publication allows you to verify the evidence yourself.

For Systematic Reviews, Reference Checking Should Be Planned and Reported

If you are conducting an informal literature review, checking references can be pragmatic and exploratory.

For systematic evidence synthesis, supplementary searching should be more explicit. PRISMA 2020 asks review authors to specify all information sources used to identify studies, including websites, organisations, and reference lists. PRISMA-S provides additional guidance for reporting literature searches, while the TARCiS statement provides specific guidance on citation searching.

Where citation searching is used systematically, document the relevant seed references, direction of searching, citation sources or methods, search dates where appropriate, and other information needed to understand what was done.

Using a Review to Diagnose What Your Search Missed

Hypothetical Example

A Systematic Review Contains Studies Missing From Your Results

Suppose you are investigating a particular educational intervention. Your database searches retrieve 680 records. You then find a recent systematic review with a closely related question and compare its included studies with your results.

Compare the evidence sets The review includes 24 primary studies. Nineteen already appear in your search results, but five do not.
Retrieve the five papers Two fail your eligibility criteria because the review used a broader population. Three genuinely appear eligible for your research question.
Investigate why they were missed One relevant study uses terminology absent from your search. Another is indexed in a database you did not search. The third is indexed in your database but uses an unexpected subject heading and unusually general language in its title and abstract.
Improve the search You test the newly discovered terminology and relevant indexing terms. The revised search retrieves the missed papers and several additional candidates.
Search beyond the review You examine the review's citation network and use the new terminology in fresh database searches rather than assuming the review's evidence set is complete.
Document what changed Because the work is intended to be reproducible, you preserve the revised strategies and record the supplementary methods used to identify additional records.

The review did more than supply three missing references. It revealed why the original search was incomplete and provided evidence for improving it.

That is often the more valuable use of an existing review.

Common Mistakes When Using Reviews to Find Primary Studies

Misconception

If a Study Appears in a Review, It Belongs in My Review Too

No. The earlier review may use different populations, outcomes, study designs, settings, dates, or conceptual boundaries. Treat its included studies as candidates and apply your own eligibility criteria independently.

Misconception

A Review's Reference List Contains Only the Studies It Reviewed

Reference lists normally include many other sources: theories, methods, background literature, reporting guidelines, previous reviews, and contextual evidence. Use explicit included-study information where available when your goal is to identify the primary studies in the synthesis.

Misconception

A Good Systematic Review Means I Do Not Need My Own Search

That depends on your research purpose, but a prior review should not automatically replace an independent search when your methodology requires one. Its question, search date, databases, eligibility criteria, and search methods may differ from yours, and relevant studies may have appeared since its search was completed.

Misconception

If the Review Found a Paper That I Missed, My Search Must Be Bad

Not necessarily. The review may have searched another database, used a supplementary method, applied broader criteria, or identified the paper through citation searching. Investigate the reason for the difference before deciding whether your strategy requires revision.

I Can Cite the Review Instead of Retrieving the Original Study

Use the review when you are citing its synthesis or interpretation. If your claim concerns what an individual primary study did or found, retrieve and verify the original whenever possible rather than relying on a secondary description.

Use Reviews as Search Maps, Cross-Checks, and Diagnostic Tools

A relevant review can play several useful roles in your search. It can identify candidate primary studies, reveal terminology, expose databases or search methods you overlooked, connect you with older literature, and provide a benchmark against which to test your retrieval.

The most productive approach is therefore not “copy the review's references.” It is “learn what this review can tell me about the literature and my own search.”

A simple decision framework

If a recent review closely matches your research question
Inspect its methods, search strategy, included studies, and supplementary search procedures before using it as a discovery source.
If the review contains a study absent from your search
Retrieve the original, apply your eligibility criteria, and investigate why your search did not find it.
If the missed study uses unfamiliar terminology
Test that terminology in your databases and determine whether it exposes additional relevant literature.
If the review is several years old
Check for updates and use appropriate database and forward citation searches to investigate literature published after its search date.
If your review requires comprehensive and reproducible searching
Use reference checking and citation searching as documented supplementary methods rather than informal additions that disappear from the reported methodology.

Use More Than the Bibliography

A review article contains several layers of search intelligence.

The methods tell you where and how the authors searched. The search strategy reveals terminology. Study tables identify included evidence. The introduction may expose historical terminology and foundational work. Limitations may tell you what the authors know they did not cover.

Read the review as a map of how another research team conceptualized and searched the field, not merely as a container of references.

Search From the Primary Studies You Discover

Once a review leads you to an eligible primary study, that study can become another seed for citation searching.

You might inspect its references, identify later papers that cite it, or use it in an iterative snowball search. This can move you beyond the boundaries of the original review.

If you are conducting a systematic review, however, decide and report how seed studies are selected rather than allowing citation searching to expand opportunistically without a clear method.

Reference Checking Is Especially Valuable When Included Studies Are Already Known

As your review progresses, you may accumulate a set of studies that clearly meet your inclusion criteria. Their reference lists can become particularly useful because those studies sit directly inside your evidence base.

The question of when to search the reference lists of included studies deserves separate consideration, especially when citation searching forms part of a systematic methodology.

Do Not Let Another Review Define Your Literature for You

Existing reviews are interpretations of a field. They are extraordinarily useful precisely because someone else has already imposed a question, structure, and set of decisions on a large body of research.

Those decisions are also why you need some distance from them.

Your research question may divide the literature differently. A study considered peripheral by the earlier review may be central to yours. A dominant theoretical tradition in the review may not be the only relevant one. Its search strategy may privilege terminology that subsequent research has moved beyond.

Use prior reviews to improve your search without allowing them to become the unquestioned boundaries of your evidence base.

When using a review for study discovery, check:
Confirm that the review's research question and eligibility criteria overlap sufficiently with your own to make its studies useful candidates.
Check the review's search date so you know the period its evidence base could realistically cover.
Inspect which databases, registers, websites, citation methods, and other information sources the review used where these are reported.
Compare its search terminology and controlled vocabulary with your own strategy for useful terms you may have missed.
Use explicit included-study tables or lists when available rather than assuming every bibliography entry is part of the review's evidence base.
Retrieve potentially eligible primary studies and apply your own inclusion criteria independently.
Investigate why genuinely relevant studies were absent from your search and revise the strategy when they reveal a meaningful retrieval problem.

Check whether an updated review exists, search relevant databases from an appropriate date, and consider forward citation searching from the review and important included studies. Citing papers still require screening because many will not be eligible primary studies.

Should I search more than one review article?
