Does rigorous research have to follow your field’s usual method?
Every research field develops methodological habits. Researchers learn which designs are familiar, which forms of evidence reviewers expect, and which analytical techniques appear repeatedly in journals. Over time, these conventions can begin to look like rules.
Suppose most studies in your area use surveys and statistical analysis, but your question is better suited to interviews, ethnographic observation, archival analysis, a case study, or a mixed methods design. Would choosing the less familiar approach make your research less rigorous?
The same problem can arise in the opposite direction. A field dominated by qualitative inquiry may occasionally confront a question that is better answered through measurement, comparison, or experimental manipulation. The important issue is therefore not whether a method is conventional, but whether it is defensible for the particular inquiry.
03 · What You Need to Know
What actually makes a research method rigorous?
Rigor concerns how well the inquiry is conducted, not how familiar the method looks
Methodological rigor concerns the quality and defensibility of the research process. The exact criteria vary by research design, but the underlying question is similar: has the researcher made methodological decisions that allow the evidence to support the claims being made?
This is why rigor should not be reduced to a particular technique. Statistical analysis is not inherently rigorous simply because it is quantitative. Interviews are not inherently rigorous or non-rigorous simply because they are qualitative. An experiment can be poorly designed, just as an ethnographic study can be carefully designed. The label attached to the method tells you what kind of inquiry is being attempted; it does not settle the quality of its execution.
This distinction follows from the broader point that there is no single procedural sequence that every scientific investigation must follow. Different questions can legitimately require different forms of evidence and different ways of producing and analyzing that evidence.
The first test is methodological fit
A rigorous design begins with alignment between the research question and the method used to answer it. If you want to estimate the prevalence of a phenomenon in a population, a well-designed survey may be appropriate. If you want to understand how people experience that phenomenon and what meanings they attach to it, in-depth qualitative inquiry may provide more suitable evidence. If you want to estimate the effect of an intervention under controlled conditions, an experimental design may be warranted.
The question should therefore help determine the method, rather than the researcher selecting a favored method first and then forcing the question to fit it.
Methodological convention
A method is widely used, expected, or historically established within a particular research community.
Methodological fit
A method is suitable for answering the particular research question and producing the kind of evidence the study requires.
The two can coincide. Often, a field uses a particular method frequently because that method genuinely suits many of the questions researchers in that field ask. The problem arises when convention is treated as sufficient justification by itself.
Different methods may require different criteria for rigor
One reason unconventional methods can be unfairly judged is that researchers sometimes evaluate every study using the standards of the dominant methodology in their field. Yet quality criteria are partly design-specific.
For example, concerns such as randomization, allocation procedures, confounding, measurement validity, sampling, reflexivity, credibility, integration of qualitative and quantitative components, and appropriateness of interpretation do not apply in exactly the same way to every study. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool illustrates this principle by providing different methodological quality criteria for qualitative studies, randomized controlled trials, nonrandomized studies, quantitative descriptive studies, and mixed methods studies.
Likewise, qualitative research has developed its own substantial literature on rigor and trustworthiness. Depending on the methodology and epistemological position, researchers may need to address matters such as reflexivity, credibility, dependability, transparency of interpretation, sampling rationale, and the relationship between data and conclusions. Trying to judge such work solely by criteria developed for experimental research can misrepresent what the study is attempting to accomplish.
This is closely related to why research does not need to use statistics to be rigorous. Statistical procedures can strengthen some kinds of inference, but they are not universal markers of research quality.
Being systematic matters even when the procedure is unconventional
Choosing an unusual approach does not mean that anything goes. A researcher still needs a coherent and sufficiently systematic process. Decisions about sampling, data generation, measurement, analysis, interpretation, and documentation should be made deliberately rather than arbitrarily.
Exactly what “systematic” looks like will depend on the methodology. A qualitative study may permit data collection and analysis to develop iteratively. An experimental protocol may require important procedures to be specified in advance. An archival study may depend on explicit inclusion rules and a transparent account of how records were located and interpreted.
Thus, being systematic should not be confused with making every methodology follow the same sequence. The more useful question is whether the procedures are systematic and rigorous in ways appropriate to the inquiry.
Transparency becomes especially important when readers are unfamiliar with the method
If you use a method that is uncommon in your discipline, some readers may not know how to judge it. That places additional importance on methodological explanation.
You may need to explain why the approach fits the research question, what methodological tradition or assumptions inform it, how participants or evidence were selected, how data were generated and analyzed, what steps were taken to strengthen the credibility of the findings, and what limitations remain.
Reporting standards can help with this. The American Psychological Association’s Journal Article Reporting Standards provide separate guidance for quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research. The Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research similarly provide reporting recommendations specifically developed for qualitative studies. Such standards do not make a study rigorous by themselves, but transparent reporting gives readers the information needed to evaluate what researchers actually did.
Watch Out
Reporting quality and methodological quality are related but not identical. A study can be conducted well and reported poorly, or reported elegantly while containing methodological weaknesses. A reporting checklist should not be treated as proof that the underlying research is rigorous.
Departing from convention requires justification, not apology
Using an uncommon method should be an intellectual decision rather than an act of methodological rebellion. Novelty is not a quality criterion either.
If the standard method in your field adequately answers your question, choosing something unusual merely to appear innovative may add difficulty without improving the research. Conversely, using the dominant method solely because reviewers expect it can create a deeper problem if that method cannot generate the evidence your question requires.
A defensible methodological rationale should therefore answer a straightforward question: Why is this approach suitable for producing credible evidence about this particular research question?
Methods also carry assumptions about what can be known
Methodological choices are not always interchangeable tools. Some approaches rest on different assumptions about knowledge, evidence, interpretation, causality, context, or the role of the researcher.
This becomes especially important when a study crosses disciplinary boundaries or introduces a methodology from another tradition. Borrowing the visible technique without understanding its underlying logic can produce an incoherent design. Conducting interviews, for example, does not by itself establish a particular qualitative methodology. Likewise, adding numerical measurements to a qualitative project does not automatically create a coherent mixed methods study.
Rigor therefore involves more than executing procedures correctly. The research question, theoretical or conceptual framing, methodology, methods, analysis, and claims should make sense together.
Some questions genuinely require methods that are uncommon in a field
Research questions change. New technologies appear, new forms of data become available, and disciplines increasingly investigate problems that cross traditional boundaries. A field’s established methodological repertoire may not always be sufficient.
Consider a discipline in which questionnaires are the dominant method. Surveys may be excellent for estimating distributions, measuring constructs, or examining associations. But if researchers begin asking how participants interpret an unfamiliar experience, why a process unfolds differently across settings, or how institutional practices operate in everyday life, other forms of inquiry may become necessary.
The same principle explains why scientific research does not always require an experiment. The strongest design is not necessarily the one with the greatest prestige in a methodological hierarchy. It is the one that allows a defensible inference from the evidence available for the question being asked.

When the less common method is the better fit
Hypothetical Example
Studying why students disengage from an online course
Imagine a researcher working in a field where large-scale questionnaires and statistical models are the usual approach. Previous studies have already identified variables associated with online course disengagement. The researcher now wants to understand how students themselves experience the process of gradually disengaging and how circumstances that are difficult to capture in predetermined survey items shape that process.
Question How do students describe the process through which they become disengaged from an online course?
Methodological decision The researcher chooses an appropriate qualitative approach using in-depth interviews rather than automatically administering another questionnaire.
Rigor The researcher provides a defensible sampling rationale, uses a systematic data-generation and analysis process, documents analytical decisions, considers researcher reflexivity, examines evidence that challenges emerging interpretations, and clearly connects the findings to the underlying data.
Interpretation The study does not become weak merely because interviews are uncommon in that research community. Its rigor must be judged according to whether the qualitative design appropriately answers the question and whether the resulting interpretations are credible and adequately supported.
Now imagine the researcher had instead used a familiar questionnaire simply because “that is how studies in this field are done.” If the predetermined response options could not capture the process the researcher wanted to understand, methodological conformity would not rescue the mismatch. A conventional method can still be the wrong method.
06 · What This Means for You
How to decide whether departing from your field’s usual method is defensible
Start with the research problem rather than the disciplinary default. Identify what you actually need to know and what kind of evidence would permit you to answer the question. Then evaluate candidate methods in relation to that requirement.
You should also consider whether you have the expertise, resources, access, ethical conditions, and analytical competence necessary to use the proposed method well. A theoretically ideal method that cannot be executed competently may not be the best practical design.
A simple decision framework
If the common method directly fits your research question
Use it if it remains the most defensible option. There is no virtue in departing from convention merely for novelty.
If the common method captures only part of what you need to know
Consider whether another design, or a coherent combination of methods, would address the missing dimension.
If another established methodology fits the question better
Use it when you can justify its assumptions, procedures, quality criteria, and contribution to answering the question.
If you are borrowing a method from another discipline
Learn the methodological tradition behind it rather than importing only its visible techniques.
If reviewers in your field may be unfamiliar with the approach
Explain the methodological rationale and relevant quality criteria particularly clearly, and use authoritative methodological and reporting guidance where appropriate.
Finally, distinguish methodological rigor from methodological complexity. Research can be rigorous without being highly complex. Adding procedures, analyses, instruments, or methodological terminology that do not strengthen the inference may create an impressive methods section while weakening the coherence of the study.

Have I identified quality criteria appropriate to this particular research design?
Are my sampling, data-generation, measurement, and analytical decisions consistent with the methodology?
Can another researcher understand how I moved from the evidence to the conclusions I report?
Have I addressed plausible sources of bias, alternative explanations, researcher influence, or other threats relevant to the design?
Have I checked an appropriate reporting guideline or methodological standard rather than relying only on conventions from another design?
Do I have the expertise and resources to conduct and analyze this form of research competently?
Am I choosing the method because it strengthens the study rather than merely because it is unusual?
