Does Your Research Question Need to Say Where the Study Happens?
Consider this question:
“How do nurses experience the introduction of an AI-assisted clinical decision-support system?”
Now imagine the nurses work in an emergency department. Or a rural primary-care clinic. Or a specialist intensive-care unit. The technology may be similar, but workload, workflow, available expertise, organizational expectations, patient acuity, and the consequences of using the system could differ considerably.
In that case, setting may be part of what makes the phenomenon understandable.
But researchers sometimes move too far in the opposite direction and place the university, hospital, city, province, country, department, and occasionally something approaching a postal address into the research question. More geographical detail does not necessarily produce a better question.
The relevant issue is whether the setting changes what you are asking or merely tells readers where you happened to conduct the study.
03 · What You Need to Know
Setting Matters When Changing the Context Could Change the Question
Research does not occur in a contextual vacuum. Participants are recruited from particular communities, institutions, organizations, health systems, schools, workplaces, online environments, or other settings. These environments can influence who participates, how an intervention is implemented, how people behave, what resources are available, and whether findings plausibly apply elsewhere.
Some structured approaches to research-question development therefore include setting explicitly. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's PICOTS framework, for example, includes Population, Intervention, Comparator, Outcomes, Timing, and Setting, with setting referring to contexts such as hospitals, private practices, and community health centers. Other frameworks, including SPICE, also make setting an explicit component.
That does not mean every research question must name one. Frameworks should help clarify a question rather than force information into it. This is the same principle involved in deciding which elements actually need to appear in a research question.
Setting Is More Than a Geographical Place
Researchers sometimes interpret setting as simply the name of a country, city, university, or hospital. In research, the concept can be broader.
Setting may refer to an emergency department rather than outpatient care, a public school rather than a private school, an online course rather than face-to-face instruction, a community environment rather than an institution, or a particular organizational or policy context.
For some questions, geographical location matters because it represents relevant social, political, economic, cultural, environmental, or regulatory conditions. For others, naming the city adds little because those conditions are not central to the inquiry.
The question to ask is not simply “Where will I collect data?” but “What about where this phenomenon occurs matters to the question?”
Setting Can Help Define the Population
Population and setting often overlap.
“Nurses working in emergency departments” identifies both a professional population and an environment in which that population works. “First-year students in fully online degree programs” similarly incorporates an educational setting into the population definition.
Research guidance on question development notes that defining the population prompts consideration of sampling, recruitment, and setting. In etiological research, for example, a population description may distinguish hospitalized participants from community-dwelling participants because that distinction can affect interpretation and generalizability.
This does not require every population description to contain a location. It means setting deserves attention when it changes who qualifies for the study or what population the findings represent.
Setting May Change How an Intervention Works
An intervention is not always separable from the environment in which it operates.
Consider a digital tutoring system implemented in a well-resourced university where students have reliable internet access, institutional technical support, and widespread prior experience with educational technology. The same system introduced in a setting with intermittent connectivity and limited device access may be used differently and produce different outcomes.
Likewise, a health intervention developed for a specialist hospital may not operate identically in community care. Staffing, expertise, infrastructure, organizational routines, incentives, and patient characteristics can interact with implementation.
Guidance on population-health intervention research emphasizes that context can influence how a problem is defined, how an intervention operates, and how outcomes arise. When such contextual interaction is central to the inquiry, setting is more than background scenery.
Setting Can Be Essential to a Qualitative Research Question
Qualitative inquiry frequently investigates experiences, meanings, practices, processes, or social interactions that are embedded in particular contexts.
Compare:
“How do teachers experience generative AI?”
with:
“How do secondary-school teachers experience implementing generative AI policies in classroom assessment?”
The second question gives the phenomenon a context that helps establish what experience is actually being investigated.
This does not mean qualitative questions should become overloaded with institutional details. A qualitative research question may remain appropriately open while still identifying the setting necessary to understand the phenomenon.
Setting Can Determine How Far the Findings Travel
A narrowly defined setting can strengthen interpretability within a particular context while limiting the range of settings to which the findings can reasonably be applied.
This is not inherently a weakness. A study may intentionally investigate a particular environment because that context is scientifically or practically important.
The problem arises when researchers study a highly specific setting and then write conclusions as though the context were irrelevant.
For example, evidence from one specialist technology-focused university does not automatically describe all higher-education institutions. Evidence from an urban tertiary hospital does not automatically represent rural primary care. Readers need enough contextual information to judge transferability or generalizability.
Naming Your Institution Does Not Automatically Make the Setting Scientifically Meaningful
Suppose a question asks:
“What factors are associated with generative AI use among undergraduate students at University X?”
The institution may simply be where the researcher has access to participants. If nothing about University X is conceptually important, the institution's name may not belong in the question even though it belongs in the methods.
Alternatively, University X may have introduced a distinctive mandatory AI policy, making that institutional environment central to the phenomenon. Now the setting has scientific relevance.
Setting as recruitment location
This is where the researchers happen to obtain participants or data. It may be important for methods and limitations without defining the research question itself.
Setting as part of the phenomenon
The context helps define the population, exposure, intervention, experience, outcome, or conditions under which the phenomenon occurs. It may therefore belong explicitly in the question.
A New Setting Is Not Automatically a Research Gap
Researchers sometimes justify a study by saying that the same relationship has been investigated elsewhere but “has never been studied at our university” or “has not been studied in our city.”
A different setting can justify new research when there is reason to expect contextual differences, when previous evidence has uncertain applicability, or when a consequential local decision requires local evidence.
But geographical novelty alone is weak justification. If there is no plausible reason the phenomenon should differ and no decision requiring local evidence, changing the location may contribute little.
This connects with the broader problem of a technically precise question that lacks scientific importance. Adding a location can make a question more specific without making it more consequential.
Do Not Confuse Setting With Every Boundary of the Study
A question can have several forms of scope: population, setting, timeframe, exposure, outcome, comparison, and other eligibility conditions. Not all of these need to appear explicitly.
For example, “among first-year students in fully online degree programs” may already communicate the setting needed for interpretation. Adding the university name, campus, city, semester, and learning-management-system platform may contribute little unless one of those details changes the phenomenon.
The objective is not maximal specification. It is enough specification to make the intended inquiry clear.
If adding contextual details makes the question increasingly cumbersome without changing what evidence it seeks, consider whether additional detail is making the research question worse rather than better.
