Separate the Value of the Question From the Prospects of the Paper
“Worth studying” and “publishable” are different judgments
When researchers describe an idea as publishable, they can mean several things. The topic fits the scope of available journals. The question resembles work those journals publish. The study seems capable of meeting methodological expectations. The findings may interest editors and readers. Or, more pragmatically, the researcher believes the project has a reasonable chance of becoming a peer-reviewed article.
Those considerations matter. None of them, however, establishes that the underlying question deserves to be investigated.
Worth studying
The question addresses a meaningful uncertainty and can make a defensible contribution relative to what is already known and what relevant audiences need.
Publishable
The completed work is likely to fit the scope, standards, contribution expectations, and editorial interests of an appropriate publication venue.
A strong project may satisfy both. The mistake is treating the second as evidence for the first.
Publication is part of research, not an embarrassing consideration
There is no reason to pretend researchers should never think about publication while choosing a question.
Research that is never communicated has limited opportunity to contribute to cumulative scholarship. Publication can make methods, evidence, interpretations, and limitations available for scrutiny and reuse. For students and academics, publication may also be an explicit program or employment expectation.
Thinking ahead can therefore improve a project. You might ask whether the question fits a recognizable scholarly conversation, whether the proposed evidence could support a contribution substantial enough for an article, whether appropriate journals exist, and whether the project can be communicated to the audience that needs the findings.
These are sensible planning questions.
The problem begins when the reasoning is reversed: this looks publishable, therefore it must be worth studying.
Research priorities can be based on more than publication opportunity
Formal research-priority exercises provide a useful contrast. The World Health Organization describes research agendas as mechanisms for identifying priority areas and knowledge gaps and emphasizes considerations such as public need, existing knowledge, feasibility, impact, equity, implementation, and stakeholder perspectives. Different exercises use different criteria, but the underlying logic is instructive: research priorities are judgments about what knowledge is needed, not merely what papers can be produced.
This principle travels beyond health research. When several possible questions compete for scarce time and resources, you can consider who needs the answer, how consequential the uncertainty is, what existing evidence already establishes, what contribution the study could make, and whether the research is feasible.
Publication potential can enter that decision. It should not silently replace it.
A publishable question can still be trivial
Imagine a topic with a large and active literature. Researchers have repeatedly examined relationships among the same familiar variables, and journals continue to publish modest variations.
You realize that nobody appears to have tested the same model using students at your institution.
The study may indeed be publishable somewhere. That does not tell you whether another location-specific repetition resolves an important uncertainty.
Perhaps your context provides a theoretically meaningful test. Perhaps local evidence is needed for an important institutional decision. In either case, there may be a defensible contribution.
But if the sole rationale is that the combination of variables, population, and location has not appeared in print before, the project may be technically novel while adding very little.
This is where the question of whether a small contribution is still worth making becomes important. Incremental research can be valuable, but “small” and “meaningless” should not be confused.
A difficult-to-publish question can still be important
The reverse problem also occurs.
Some questions may be scientifically or socially important yet difficult to publish. The relevant population may be difficult to recruit. The result may be expected to be null. The work may involve replication rather than conspicuous novelty. The question may concern a neglected population with a relatively small research community. Or the findings may complicate a fashionable narrative rather than reinforce it.
Publication difficulty does not prove importance, of course. A manuscript may be difficult to publish because the question is weak, the design is inappropriate, or the contribution is unclear.
But editorial attractiveness and research significance should not be treated as equivalent.
Publication systems can create incentives that distort question selection
The concern is not merely hypothetical. Scholarship on publication pressure has long examined whether academic incentives can influence research behavior. Studies of publication bias have also documented the preferential publication of statistically significant, positive, or otherwise favorable findings in some research literatures.
A recent consensus view arising from a U.S. National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke meeting argues that scientific culture continues to incentivize positive or exciting results and recommends shifting attention toward the importance of the research question and the quality of the research process regardless of outcome.
These pressures matter when researchers begin selecting questions according to what they believe will generate attractive findings.
Watch Out
If you find yourself asking, “Which question is most likely to give me a significant result that journals will want?”, the publication strategy is beginning to shape the scientific question in a risky way. Choose questions whose answers matter even when the results are null, unexpected, complicated, or contrary to your preferred explanation.
A good question should survive an unexciting answer
One of the most useful tests of a research question is to imagine that the study produces the least exciting credible result.
No statistically significant difference. A weak association. Little change following an intervention. Results largely consistent with previous evidence. A theoretically plausible effect that turns out to be much smaller than anticipated.
Would knowing that still matter?
If yes, the question may be genuinely informative. If the entire value of the project disappears unless the result is dramatic, you may be choosing a hoped-for finding rather than an important question.
This issue is explored more directly when considering whether research is worth conducting when you expect to find no difference and when the answer might be that nothing happens.
Journal fit is useful evidence about communication, not importance
Looking at journals while developing a project can still be helpful.
Reading recent papers reveals how researchers in a field frame questions, what methodological standards are common, what debates are active, which populations are underrepresented, and what types of evidence journals currently publish. It can also help you avoid designing a study for which no appropriate scholarly audience can be identified.
But journal fit answers a communication question: where could this work enter the scholarly conversation?
It does not answer the prior question: is this knowledge worth producing?
A journal's editorial priorities can change. A currently fashionable topic can lose attention. A question should therefore have a rationale that survives beyond the preferences of one particular venue.
Do not confuse a fashionable topic with a timely question
Publishability can become especially seductive when a topic is receiving intense attention. Researchers see special issues, calls for papers, conference tracks, funding opportunities, and rapidly expanding literatures. Studying the topic may appear strategically sensible.
Sometimes it is.
A new technology, policy, crisis, scientific capability, or social development can create genuine unanswered questions that require timely evidence. But high publication activity can also encourage repetitive studies whose primary novelty is that they attach a fashionable term to an established question.
The better test is whether the changing context has created a consequential uncertainty. That distinction becomes central when deciding whether a research question is timely without merely chasing a trend.
Publication incentives can influence which results become visible
Question selection is also connected to a broader problem: not every result has historically had the same probability of appearing in the published literature.
Publication bias occurs when the dissemination of research findings depends partly on the nature or direction of the results. The extent and mechanisms vary across disciplines and study types, but underreporting of null and negative findings has been documented extensively enough to create concern about the evidence base itself.
If researchers anticipate those incentives before a study begins, they may preferentially select questions expected to yield conspicuous results. Over time, the research agenda can become shaped not only by what society or scholarship needs to know but also by what the publication system rewards.
This is one reason a researcher's responsibility begins before data collection. Choosing what to ask is already part of shaping the literature.
Responsible research assessment is moving away from publication counts alone
Research evaluation systems can reinforce publication-driven choices when they reward output volume or journal prestige too heavily. The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment, commonly known as DORA, advocates responsible research assessment that considers a broader range of research characteristics, processes, outputs, outcomes, and societal impacts rather than allowing inappropriate publication-based metrics to dominate evaluation.
This does not mean publications no longer matter. Nor does it mean every institution has adopted responsible research assessment principles. Researchers operate under real local requirements, and ignoring those requirements can have real consequences.
It does mean that “more papers” is an incomplete account of research contribution.
Career realities are legitimate constraints
A doctoral student who must publish before graduation faces a different decision from a tenured researcher choosing among several long-term projects. An early-career researcher approaching a contract deadline may reasonably weigh publication probability more heavily than someone with greater security.
That is not intellectual corruption. It is constraint-aware planning.
The distinction lies in what publication pressure is allowed to do. It can influence the choice among several worthwhile questions. It should not ordinarily convert a question with negligible value into a worthwhile one.

Publishability becomes most useful as a filter after importance
Suppose you have three questions, each of which addresses a meaningful uncertainty and could make a defensible contribution. You cannot study all three.
Now publication prospects can become a sensible differentiator.
One question may align with your expertise, available data, methodological capacity, timeline, and an identifiable scholarly audience. Another may require resources you do not possess. A third may be important but so difficult to execute convincingly that the likely study would not answer it well.
Choosing the first question is not “selling out.” Feasibility and dissemination are legitimate components of research planning.
The ordering matters: establish that the questions are worth answering, then use feasibility, publication prospects, resources, career constraints, and personal interest to decide which worthwhile question you can responsibly pursue.
Publication should be a destination for the research, not its sole reason for existing
A useful way to think about publication is as part of the pathway through which research becomes available to others.
The paper is not the same thing as the contribution. The paper communicates the contribution.
That distinction sounds obvious, yet it becomes surprisingly easy to lose when academic systems count publications as outputs. A completed article can be professionally valuable to the researcher even when the knowledge it contains adds little. Conversely, a consequential study can matter even before its eventual citation count or journal placement is known.
Keeping those ideas separate helps preserve the more fundamental question: if this study were conducted rigorously and nobody knew which journal would eventually accept it, would you still have a convincing reason why the answer should exist?
