What If You Already Have Plenty of Studies Supporting What You Want to Say?
You have a claim in mind. After searching the literature, you find one supporting study, then another, then several more. The pattern looks convincing. Your reference list is growing, your argument appears well supported, and continuing to search starts to feel unnecessary.
Can you stop?
Not simply because you have accumulated enough citations to defend the position you already hold. A literature search is not supposed to function as a hunt for witnesses for one side of an argument. If relevant evidence exists that contradicts, qualifies, limits, or contextualizes your claim, excluding it can produce a distorted account of what the literature actually shows.

A Literature Search Should Investigate a Question, Not Confirm a Preferred Answer
Searching Only Until Your Position Looks Convincing Creates an Obvious Bias
Imagine that you believe a particular educational technology improves student learning. You search until you locate eight studies reporting positive outcomes and then stop. Those eight papers may be genuine and accurately represented. The problem is what you do not know.
Perhaps another set of studies found negligible effects. Perhaps positive outcomes appeared only under particular instructional conditions. Perhaps stronger research designs produced smaller estimates. Perhaps the intervention helped one outcome but not another.
Stopping when the evidence becomes favorable makes the conclusion partly dependent on the researcher's preferred stopping point rather than on the relevant evidence base.
This Is Closely Related to Confirmation Bias
Confirmation bias is commonly described as seeking or interpreting evidence in ways that favor existing beliefs, expectations, or hypotheses. It can affect not only how evidence is interpreted but also what evidence a researcher looks for in the first place.
In literature searching, the risk is straightforward. Once you have developed a tentative explanation, you may unconsciously search for terminology associated with that explanation, notice supportive findings more readily, follow citations from papers you agree with, or decide that further searching is unnecessary once your argument feels sufficiently documented.
None of this requires deliberate misconduct. The methodological problem exists precisely because selective evidence seeking can occur without the researcher consciously intending to misrepresent the literature.
Watch Out
A stack of accurate citations can still support a misleading literature review if relevant contradictory or qualifying evidence was systematically less likely to be searched for, selected, or discussed.
The Search Question Should Not Be "How Many Citations Do I Need?"
A common practical temptation is to treat the literature search as complete once each major statement has several references attached to it. That may be sufficient for documenting an uncontroversial background fact, but it is a poor rule for reviewing a contested empirical question.
The number of studies supporting a claim does not tell you whether the relevant evidence has been represented adequately. Five studies may constitute nearly the entire literature on a narrow question. Twenty favorable studies may still provide a misleading picture if another substantial body of evidence reaches different conclusions.
This is why the number of references cannot establish that a literature review is comprehensive.
Search for the Phenomenon, Not for the Result You Want
A well-designed search generally focuses on the concepts defining the research question rather than encoding the desired conclusion into the query.
For example, if you want to understand whether online learning affects student achievement, a search designed around the intervention, population, outcome, and other methodologically appropriate concepts gives studies with different findings a chance to be retrieved. A search dominated by phrases such as "benefits of online learning" or "online learning improves achievement" may orient retrieval toward supportive language.
Search design varies considerably by review type and database, so this does not mean every possible concept should be inserted into every search. The underlying principle is simpler: relevant evidence should not become harder to retrieve merely because its conclusions might disagree with yours.
Contradictory Evidence Can Improve the Argument Rather Than Destroy It
Researchers sometimes treat contradictory papers as threats to an argument. Often they are more useful than that.
A contradictory finding may reveal that an effect depends on age, discipline, duration, measurement, implementation quality, research design, or another condition. Two apparently incompatible studies may actually be answering somewhat different questions.
Alternatively, the evidence may genuinely be inconsistent. That is also a legitimate conclusion.
When you find papers that contradict what you thought, the scholarly response is to investigate the disagreement. A more conditional argument that accurately reflects the evidence is stronger than an unequivocal argument created by excluding inconvenient studies.
Support and Refutation Are Not the Only Possibilities
Literature rarely divides neatly into papers that prove your argument and papers that disprove it. Studies may differ in population, intervention, comparison, outcome, design, setting, theoretical assumptions, and analytical choices.
A paper might support part of your claim while challenging another part. Another may report a similar result but offer a competing explanation. A third may reveal that the relationship appears only under particular circumstances.
Your synthesis should therefore ask how studies relate to the research question rather than sorting them prematurely into "for" and "against."
Evidence gathering
Searching for relevant evidence capable of informing the question regardless of whether it agrees with your current interpretation.
Evidence shopping
Continuing only until enough favorable material has been accumulated to make a preferred claim appear adequately supported.
Systematic Reviews Make the Problem Particularly Clear
Cochrane guidance describes systematic reviews as requiring thorough, objective, and reproducible searches across relevant sources to identify as many eligible studies as possible within resource limits. One reason is to minimize bias.
Eligibility is determined by prespecified criteria, not by whether a study reports the result reviewers would prefer. If unfavorable studies were systematically less likely to be identified or included, the synthesis could provide a biased estimate of the evidence.
The exact requirements of a systematic review should not automatically be imposed on every narrative literature review or thesis chapter. The underlying principle, however, remains useful: your stopping rule should not depend on the direction of the findings you happen to encounter.
Your Argument Should Emerge From Synthesis
It is perfectly reasonable to begin a literature review with expectations, preliminary interpretations, or hypotheses. Researchers rarely approach a topic as completely blank slates.
The problem arises when the search is organized to protect that initial interpretation.
A stronger process allows the argument to evolve. Early literature may suggest one explanation. Additional studies may add qualifications. Contradictory evidence may expose limits. Eventually, your synthesis might support the original position, reject it, or produce a more conditional conclusion.
If new papers are still materially changing your understanding, that is usually evidence that the intellectual work is not finished simply because your original argument already has citations behind it.
Stop When Further Searching Has Low Expected Value, Not When Support Becomes Convenient
A defensible stopping point may be approached when appropriate searches have covered the relevant sources and terminology, supplementary methods have been used where warranted, contradictory perspectives have been investigated, and additional searching increasingly produces little that changes the review.
This is the logic behind concepts such as diminishing returns and, in some forms of synthesis, literature saturation.
For review types requiring comprehensive identification of eligible studies, follow the applicable methodological guidance instead. The important distinction is that the decision to stop should follow from the search objective and evidence obtained, not from satisfaction with the direction of the findings.

How Stopping at Support Can Produce the Wrong Literature Review
Hypothetical Example
Does Gamification Improve Student Learning?
Suppose a graduate student begins with the belief that gamification improves learning. The planned literature review will provide the theoretical and empirical basis for a study using gamified activities in an undergraduate course.
Initial search The student quickly finds several studies reporting improved motivation, engagement, or academic performance and begins drafting an argument that gamification is an effective instructional approach.
The tempting stopping point There are already enough citations for several paragraphs. Continuing seems unnecessary because the proposed study now has a convincing rationale.
Search beyond the preferred conclusion Instead of stopping, the student continues searching using neutral topic terminology and follows references from reviews and key studies.
Contradictory evidence appears Additional research reports mixed outcomes and suggests that results may depend on the game elements used, duration of the intervention, learner characteristics, outcome measures, and implementation context.
The argument changes The student no longer claims simply that gamification improves learning. The literature review instead argues that effects appear conditional and that identifying the circumstances under which particular gamification designs are beneficial remains important.
The study becomes more defensible The proposed research now addresses a genuine uncertainty rather than beginning from a conclusion selectively assembled from favorable studies.
The contradictory literature did not ruin the student's rationale. It improved it. The resulting research question is more precise because the review represents uncertainty rather than hiding it.

Before You Stop Because Your Argument Already Looks Supported
Before ending the search, check:
My search terminology describes the research problem rather than embedding the conclusion I hope to find.
Studies are treated as relevant because they address the question, not because their findings support my position.
I have deliberately searched for contradictory findings, null findings, alternative explanations, and important boundary conditions where appropriate.
I have investigated consequential disagreements instead of automatically labeling inconvenient studies as outliers.
My interpretation distinguishes genuine consensus from a pattern that may simply reflect my search strategy.
I would apply the same relevance and quality criteria to a study whether its findings supported or challenged my current argument.
My stopping decision is based on adequate coverage, diminishing informational returns, or the requirements of my review method rather than on having accumulated enough favorable citations.
