How Can Numbers and Experiences Contribute to the Same Synthesis?
Your literature contains quantitative studies reporting effect estimates, associations, frequencies, or scores. It also contains qualitative studies examining experiences, perceptions, processes, meanings, or contexts. Both seem relevant to your question, but they speak in different evidential languages.
Should you discuss them in separate sections? Can interview findings explain an experimental result? If quantitative and qualitative findings point in different directions, do they contradict each other? And how do you integrate them without turning qualitative findings into anecdotes or treating quantitative results as the only evidence that really counts?
The central task is not to make the two forms of evidence look alike. It is to determine what each contributes to the research question and then establish a defensible relationship between those contributions.
03 · What You Need to Know
Integration Begins With What the Evidence Is Capable of Showing
Quantitative and qualitative evidence often answer different parts of a problem
Quantitative research commonly addresses questions involving magnitude, frequency, association, difference, prediction, or intervention effects. Qualitative research may examine how people experience a phenomenon, what it means to them, how processes unfold, or how context shapes what happens.
These distinctions are not absolute. Quantitative and qualitative designs are diverse, and the research question and design matter more than the label alone. Still, recognizing their different evidential contributions helps prevent inappropriate comparisons.
Suppose quantitative studies suggest that an educational intervention produces a modest improvement in achievement. Qualitative studies may reveal that students value the intervention because it provides rapid feedback but struggle when that feedback lacks explanation. Those qualitative findings do not provide another estimate of the intervention effect. They contribute evidence about experience, implementation, and possible processes through which the intervention succeeds or fails.
Quantitative contribution
How much, how often, whether variables are associated, or whether measured outcomes differ under specified conditions.
Qualitative contribution
How a phenomenon is experienced, interpreted, enacted, or shaped by context and process.
Do not assume that integration means direct comparison
Some quantitative and qualitative findings address sufficiently similar questions to be brought into close analytical relationship. Others are complementary rather than directly comparable.
For example, a trial estimating whether an intervention reduces dropout and interviews exploring why students remain enrolled address related but distinct questions. It would be misleading to describe positive interview accounts as independently confirming the trial's effect estimate. They may instead illuminate mechanisms, contextual conditions, or participant experiences that help interpret the quantitative finding.
This distinction matters because synthesis should not erase what generated the evidence in the first place.
Start with the review question
The way quantitative and qualitative evidence should be integrated depends substantially on what you are trying to understand.
If both evidence types can answer essentially the same review question, it may be reasonable under an appropriate methodology to transform them into a form that permits integrated analysis. If quantitative and qualitative evidence address different dimensions of a broader problem, preserving separate syntheses before integration may be more appropriate.
JBI makes this distinction explicit in its methodology for mixed methods systematic reviews. Its convergent integrated approach is intended for review questions that can be addressed by both quantitative and qualitative research, whereas its convergent segregated approach is used when the evidence addresses different dimensions of a phenomenon.
One option is to synthesize separately and integrate afterward
Suppose your review asks both whether an intervention works and how participants experience it. The quantitative evidence may address effectiveness while the qualitative evidence addresses experiences, barriers, acceptability, or implementation.
Under JBI's convergent segregated approach, quantitative and qualitative evidence are synthesized independently before the two resulting bodies of evidence are integrated. JBI describes the final integration as a process of examining the synthesized evidence together to develop a more comprehensive understanding than either synthesis would provide alone.
Quantitative synthesis What does the quantitative evidence indicate about outcomes, associations, frequencies, or effects?
Qualitative synthesis What does the qualitative evidence indicate about experiences, meanings, processes, barriers, facilitators, or context?
Integration How do the two syntheses relate, and what becomes understandable only when they are considered together?
Another option is to transform evidence for integrated synthesis
Formal mixed methods review methodologies can also transform one form of evidence so that it can be analyzed with another. In JBI's convergent integrated approach, quantitative findings are converted into textual descriptions, sometimes called “qualitizing,” and then assembled with qualitative findings for integrated analysis.
This is a methodological procedure rather than simply rewriting numbers as sentences. The transformation and subsequent integration need to follow an explicit review methodology and should be reported transparently.
Look for several possible relationships between the evidence
Integration becomes more useful when you ask what kind of relationship exists between the quantitative and qualitative evidence rather than merely whether they “agree.”

Convergence does not mean equivalence
Imagine that quantitative studies report greater persistence among students receiving mentoring, while qualitative studies describe participants feeling supported and more capable of handling academic setbacks.
Those findings may contribute to a coherent interpretation, but they are not measurements of the same thing. Persistence is an observed outcome. Feeling supported is an experience. Treating both simply as evidence that “mentoring works” would discard potentially important distinctions.
A more useful synthesis might argue that mentoring is associated with improved persistence while qualitative evidence identifies relational support and assistance with academic difficulties as features participants perceive as important. Whether those experiences mediate the quantitative outcome would require evidence capable of addressing that mechanism.
Qualitative evidence should not automatically become the explanation
A particularly tempting synthesis move is to observe a quantitative pattern and then select a qualitative theme that seems to explain it.
Sometimes that interpretation is defensible. Sometimes it is speculation wearing a citation.
If quantitative studies show that an intervention has larger effects in small classes and interviews report that students appreciate personalized attention, personalized attention becomes a plausible explanation. But unless the evidence actually links class size, personalized attention, and outcomes in a way capable of supporting that mechanism, the synthesis should identify it as an interpretation rather than an established causal pathway.
Watch Out
Do not convert a plausible cross-study explanation into a demonstrated mechanism. Qualitative findings can illuminate how participants understand or experience a process without necessarily establishing why a quantitative effect occurred.
Divergent findings may be analytically valuable
Suppose survey data show high satisfaction with an intervention, while interviews reveal substantial frustration and unequal access. That is not necessarily a synthesis failure.
The quantitative measure may capture an overall tendency that conceals variation. Interviews may reveal experiences not represented adequately by the survey instrument. Alternatively, the samples, contexts, or timing may differ.
Instead of choosing which evidence to believe, investigate what the divergence reveals about measurement, context, sampling, or the multidimensional nature of the phenomenon.
Do not treat quantitative evidence as the conclusion and qualitative evidence as decoration
Mixed evidence is sometimes presented asymmetrically: quantitative results determine the conclusion, while qualitative findings provide colorful quotations afterward. That is not meaningful integration.
If qualitative evidence is relevant to the review question, it should be allowed to qualify, complicate, extend, or potentially challenge the interpretation of quantitative findings. Conversely, qualitative themes should not be generalized beyond what their evidence supports merely because quantitative studies address a larger sample.
Cochrane guidance for mixed-methods qualitative evidence synthesis similarly emphasizes a rationale for integrating evidence, appropriate appraisal of both quantitative and qualitative studies, and, where possible, an integrated synthesis rather than two disconnected bodies of results.
Formal mixed methods synthesis requires an explicit method
If you are writing an ordinary literature review, you may integrate quantitative and qualitative studies narratively as long as the reasoning is transparent and methodologically defensible.
A formal mixed methods systematic review is different. It requires an explicit approach to searching, appraisal, extraction, synthesis, and integration. JBI identifies data transformation, sequence of synthesis, and the method by which quantitative and qualitative evidence are integrated as central methodological considerations.

What Integration Looks Like When the Evidence Answers Different Questions
Hypothetical Example
Does online peer mentoring help first-year university students?
Imagine a hypothetical literature containing four quantitative studies and five qualitative studies. Two quantitative studies report lower dropout among students receiving peer mentoring, one reports no clear difference, and one reports greater academic belonging but does not measure dropout. Qualitative studies consistently describe emotional reassurance and practical guidance as valued aspects of mentoring, while several also report that poorly matched mentors can make participation feel superficial.
Do not flatten the evidence into one verdict
A weak synthesis might state: “Quantitative and qualitative studies agree that peer mentoring is effective.”
That conclusion is too broad. The quantitative evidence is not uniformly positive, the studies examine different outcomes, and the qualitative evidence concerns participants' experiences rather than estimating intervention effectiveness.
Synthesize each contribution first
Quantitative evidence The hypothetical quantitative literature provides some evidence of improved persistence and academic belonging, but the pattern is not consistent across all studies or outcomes.
Qualitative evidence Participants commonly describe reassurance and practical guidance as valuable, although the perceived quality of mentoring appears sensitive to mentor-student matching.
Cross-evidence comparison The qualitative evidence identifies relational and practical features that may help explain why mentoring is beneficial in some circumstances, while also suggesting one condition that could contribute to variable outcomes.
Integrated interpretation Peer mentoring may support first-year adjustment and persistence, but its contribution appears likely to depend partly on the quality and functioning of the mentoring relationship.
The integrated interpretation goes beyond either evidence type alone, but it remains appropriately qualified. It does not claim that the qualitative studies prove why dropout changed, nor does it reduce students' experiences to evidence for an intervention effect.

Am I preserving the distinction between outcomes, associations, experiences, perceptions, processes, and explanations?
Have I determined whether the evidence is directly comparable, complementary, explanatory, expanding, or divergent?
Have I avoided treating qualitative findings as effect estimates or quantitative findings as complete accounts of experience and context?
If I propose an explanation across evidence types, is the strength of that explanation supported by the underlying studies?
Have I investigated apparent disagreement before calling the evidence contradictory?
Does the integrated interpretation add understanding beyond presenting the two evidence types separately?
For a formal review, have I selected, justified, and transparently reported an appropriate integration methodology?
