What Does It Actually Mean to Synthesize Research?

Synthesizing research means analyzing evidence across sources and constructing an integrated account of what the literature collectively shows, where it differs, and what remains uncertain.

01 · The Question

What Are You Actually Doing When You “Synthesize” Research?

Researchers are routinely told to synthesize the literature. The instruction sounds straightforward until you try to do it. Should you combine findings? Compare papers? Identify themes? Draw your own conclusion? What happens when the studies use different methods or reach different conclusions?

Part of the difficulty is that synthesis is used at different levels of formality. It can describe the intellectual work involved in an ordinary literature review, but it can also refer to explicit research-synthesis methodologies with defined procedures. Those are related uses, but they should not be collapsed into one another.

At its most practical level, synthesis asks you to stop treating studies as isolated documents and begin examining what can reasonably be understood from their relationships.

02 · The Short Answer

Synthesis Means Building an Integrated Understanding From Separate Studies

In Brief

To synthesize research is to analyze relevant evidence across multiple sources, identify meaningful relationships among them, and construct an integrated account of what the body of research collectively suggests.

That may involve convergence, disagreement, variation, methodological differences, theoretical explanations, gaps, or uncertainty. The appropriate form of synthesis depends on your review question, evidence, and, for formal evidence syntheses, the methodology being used.

03 · What You Need to Know

Synthesis Happens Between Studies, Not Merely Within Them

Start with the question, not with the pile of papers

Synthesis becomes difficult when the task is framed as “combine everything I have read.” Not everything belongs together, and not every characteristic of every study matters to your purpose.

Your review question provides the analytical lens. If you are interested in whether a teaching intervention improves learning, outcomes, study designs, implementation conditions, and populations may become especially important. If your question concerns how students experience that intervention, qualitative findings and contextual explanations may matter more.

This is why the same collection of papers could support different syntheses depending on the question being asked.

Extract the information that is actually comparable or connectable

Before synthesis, you need to know what each study contributes. Depending on the review, useful information might include constructs, theoretical frameworks, populations, settings, methods, measures, interventions, findings, limitations, and contextual conditions.

A literature or synthesis matrix can help because it places studies alongside common analytical categories. University guidance on literature reviews recommends such matrices for identifying themes and examining whether sources build on, challenge, or complete one another.

The matrix itself is not the synthesis. It makes relationships easier to inspect.

Look for relationships rather than merely similarities

Researchers often begin synthesis by searching for themes, but synthesis can involve many kinds of relationships. Several studies may converge on a finding. Others may disagree. A later study may qualify an earlier conclusion. A pattern may occur only in certain populations. Different methods may illuminate different dimensions of the same phenomenon.

Writing guidance commonly frames synthesis as placing sources in relation to one another and organizing literature around patterns, themes, overlaps, or gaps rather than treating papers as independent entries.

Synthesis I can explain what meaningful relationships among these studies imply for the question I am asking.

Ask why findings converge or diverge

Identifying a pattern is only the beginning. Suppose six studies report beneficial associations and three do not. Simply counting them may conceal important differences. Were the nine studies equally rigorous? Did they measure the same outcome? Were their populations comparable? Did the intervention differ? Were some studies adequately powered while others were not?

Synthesis therefore requires interpretation, not just aggregation. The aim is not necessarily to force the literature into one verdict, but to understand what kinds of conclusions the available evidence can support.

Methods affect what can legitimately be combined

Not all evidence should be synthesized in the same way. Formal research synthesis encompasses numerous methodologies, including quantitative, qualitative, conventional, and other approaches. These differ in their purposes, assumptions, units of analysis, and methods for bringing evidence together.

A statistical meta-analysis, for example, is not interchangeable with a qualitative synthesis or a narrative literature review. Even within less formal literature-review writing, methodological differences matter because they affect what a finding means and how directly it can be compared with another.

Watch Out

Do not treat synthesis as permission to merge fundamentally different findings into a single conclusion. Integration should preserve differences that materially affect interpretation.

Synthesis produces something that was not stated by any one study

This is perhaps the most useful way to recognize synthesis. No individual paper can tell you what an entire literature collectively establishes unless that paper has itself conducted an appropriate review of that literature.

Your synthesis may show that findings are broadly consistent, that an apparent effect seems context-dependent, that researchers repeatedly use one narrow operational definition, that evidence is concentrated in a particular population, or that apparently conflicting findings become more coherent when methodological differences are considered.

These observations emerge from examining studies together. Work on synthetic literature reviews similarly emphasizes identifying patterns, trends, inconsistencies, gaps, and implications across a body of research.

Synthesis is interpretive, but it is constrained by evidence

Your analytical voice is necessary because studies do not arrange themselves into an argument. You decide which relationships are relevant, how evidence should be grouped, and what interpretation is warranted.

That does not mean any interpretation is acceptable. A defensible synthesis should remain traceable to the underlying evidence, acknowledge consequential differences among studies, and avoid making the literature appear more consistent or certain than it is.

04 · A Practical Example

From Five Separate Findings to One Defensible Synthesis

Hypothetical Example

Does collaborative learning improve student achievement?

Imagine five hypothetical studies. Two controlled studies report higher achievement among students using structured collaborative activities. A third reports no overall difference but finds benefits among students who participated consistently. A qualitative study describes students explaining difficult concepts to peers as particularly valuable. Another observational study finds that loosely structured group work is associated with uneven participation and no clear achievement advantage.

1. Identify the relevant findings The studies provide evidence about achievement, participation, students' experiences, and differences in how collaborative activities were structured.
2. Compare the evidence The findings do not support an identical conclusion across every study, but positive outcomes appear more often where collaboration is structured or sustained.
3. Examine possible explanations The qualitative evidence suggests one possible mechanism: explaining ideas to peers may support understanding. The observational study raises a boundary condition by showing that simply placing students in groups does not guarantee productive collaboration.
4. State the synthesis cautiously Across these hypothetical studies, collaborative learning appears more plausibly associated with improved learning when participation is sustained and the collaborative task is structured, rather than as a consequence of group work alone.

That final statement is not a finding copied from one paper. It is an interpretation constructed across the hypothetical evidence. Notice, however, that it remains qualified. A responsible synthesis does not convert five heterogeneous studies into stronger causal evidence than their designs permit.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

What Synthesis Does Not Mean

Misconception

“Synthesis means combining all the studies into one conclusion”

Sometimes the most accurate synthesis is that the evidence does not support one conclusion. Important differences, contradictory findings, or insufficient comparability may themselves characterize the state of the literature.

Misconception

“I should find themes first and put every paper into one”

Themes should emerge from analytically meaningful patterns rather than from a need to create tidy headings. A study may contribute to several themes, and some evidence may resist the categories that initially seem convenient.

Misconception

“The conclusion supported by the largest number of studies wins”

Vote counting can be misleading. Studies may differ in design quality, sample size, measurement, population, precision, and relevance. Five weak or poorly comparable studies do not automatically outweigh two stronger and more directly relevant studies.

Misconception

“Conflicting findings prevent synthesis”

Conflict is often something to synthesize. The analytical task becomes identifying the nature of the disagreement and asking whether differences in methods, contexts, populations, definitions, or other conditions help explain it.

Misconception

“Synthesis means making a stronger claim than the individual studies make”

Synthesis can reveal broader patterns, but it cannot repair weaknesses in the underlying evidence by rhetoric. If the available studies are observational, heterogeneous, sparse, or otherwise limited, the synthesis should preserve those limitations.

06 · What This Means for You

A Practical Way to Start Synthesizing Your Own Literature

Once you have read the relevant studies, resist the temptation to begin drafting immediately from your article notes. First arrange the evidence so that you can see across studies. A matrix, table, or structured set of notes can help you compare sources by the dimensions that matter to your question. Synthesis guidance commonly recommends this cross-source organization because it shifts attention from individual papers toward themes and relationships.

A simple decision framework

If several studies reach similar findings
Examine whether they are sufficiently comparable and whether the pattern persists across methods, populations, or contexts.
If studies reach different findings
Investigate what differs between them before describing the literature as contradictory.
If different methods address different dimensions of the problem
Consider whether the findings complement one another rather than trying to make them answer an identical question.
If the evidence is too heterogeneous for a strong overall conclusion
Make the heterogeneity visible and state narrower conclusions that the evidence can actually support.

When you begin writing, organize paragraphs around what you want to say about the literature rather than around the order in which you encountered the papers. This does not prohibit discussing an especially important study in depth. It simply keeps the intellectual focus on the research problem rather than turning the review into an annotated bibliography.

Have I defined the question or issue that determines which relationships among studies matter?
Have I compared evidence across studies rather than writing exclusively from one paper at a time?
Have I identified meaningful convergence, disagreement, variation, qualifications, or gaps?
Have I examined whether differences in methods, measures, populations, or contexts affect the comparison?
Have I considered the strength and relevance of the underlying evidence rather than simply counting studies?
Can I trace my interpretations back to the studies that support them?
Have I preserved uncertainty where the literature does not justify a confident conclusion?
Does my organization help the reader understand the literature rather than merely remember individual papers?

Frequently Asked Questions About Synthesizing Research

Do I need a synthesis matrix to synthesize research?

No. A matrix is an organizational tool, not a requirement. It can be particularly useful for making patterns and differences visible across many studies, but other structured approaches to note-taking and analysis can serve the same purpose.

Is research synthesis the same as a systematic review?

No. Research synthesis is a broad concept. Systematic reviews are a family of formal review approaches that use explicit methods for identifying, selecting, appraising, and synthesizing evidence. Different synthesis methodologies have different purposes and procedures.

Is synthesis always qualitative?

No. Research can be synthesized using qualitative, quantitative, mixed, and other approaches. Meta-analysis, for example, uses statistical methods to combine suitable quantitative results, while qualitative synthesis approaches address different forms of evidence and questions.

Can I synthesize studies that disagree?

Yes. Disagreement may be one of the most important features to explain. Determine whether the studies address sufficiently comparable questions and then examine whether methodological, conceptual, population, or contextual differences help account for the divergence.

Can I synthesize studies that use different research methods?

Potentially, but you should not assume that their findings are directly comparable. Different methods may address different aspects of a phenomenon. The appropriate way to integrate them depends on your research question and the type of review or synthesis you are conducting.

How do I know when I have moved beyond summary?

One useful test is whether your discussion makes a defensible observation about relationships across studies that cannot be obtained simply by reading one source summary. Patterns, qualifications, contradictions, contextual differences, and unresolved questions are common signs that synthesis is occurring.

Does every literature review need the same type of synthesis?

No. The appropriate synthesis depends on the purpose of the review, its question, the kinds of evidence included, and any formal review methodology being followed. Research-synthesis methodologies differ substantially in their assumptions, procedures, and intended products.

Synthesis Is the Intellectual Work of Making Sense Across Studies

The Bottom Line

To synthesize research is to examine evidence across studies and develop a defensible account of the patterns, relationships, disagreements, qualifications, and uncertainties that become visible when those studies are considered together.

The goal is not to make diverse evidence look uniform. Good synthesis preserves consequential differences and limits its conclusions to what the underlying evidence can reasonably support.
