Let the Research Problem Determine the Question Structure
The purpose of research questions is not to fill a required section of the proposal. They specify what the investigation is trying to determine and help connect the research problem to the evidence, methods, analysis, and eventual conclusions.
Sometimes one question can perform that function adequately. In other cases, the problem contains several connected dimensions that are clearer when expressed separately.
One Broad Question May Need Several More Specific Questions
Suppose a thesis broadly asks: How do university students engage critically with generative AI when completing academic writing tasks?
That question could potentially be investigated through several more specific questions concerning how students use generative AI, how they evaluate generated information, and what factors appear to influence those practices.
Breaking the broader problem into several questions can improve analytical clarity when each question performs a distinct but connected function.
The alternative is sometimes a single question so overloaded with constructs, relationships, populations, and outcomes that nobody is quite sure what answering it would entail. One long sentence is not necessarily a focused study.
Multiple Questions Should Still Belong to One Intellectual Problem
The strongest reason for including several questions is that they illuminate different aspects of the same research problem.
For example, a thesis might ask:
- How frequently do university students use generative AI for academic writing?
- For which academic writing activities do they use it?
- What factors are associated with differences in their use?
These questions perform different analytical functions, but they can contribute to one coherent investigation of student generative AI use.
Now imagine adding: How do university administrators develop institutional policies for generative AI? The broad topic remains the same, but the population, phenomenon, literature, and likely methodology have shifted considerably.
The key issue is therefore whether the questions should be combined into one coherent study, not whether they share terminology.
Research Questions Can Have Different Relationships
Several question structures can work within a thesis. The appropriate structure depends on the methodology and research purpose.

These categories are not universal labels. Different disciplines and institutions use terms such as main question, central question, subsidiary question, subquestion, primary objective, and secondary objective differently. Use terminology consistent with your methodology and local requirements.
The Methodology May Influence How Many Questions Make Sense
Different methodological approaches place different demands on research questions.
A tightly specified quantitative study might use one primary question and several secondary questions corresponding to defined relationships or outcomes. A qualitative study may use a broad central question with subquestions that help explore different dimensions of participants' experiences. A mixed-methods study may include quantitative and qualitative questions as well as an explicit question concerning how the two forms of evidence relate or are integrated.
This variation is one reason numerical prescriptions such as "every thesis should have three research questions" are difficult to defend as universal methodological rules.
Mixed-Methods Theses May Need Questions for Different Components
Mixed-methods research provides a particularly clear example of why more than one question may be justified. Guidance by Creswell and Plano Clark describes quantitative questions or hypotheses, qualitative questions, and mixed-methods questions concerned with how the quantitative and qualitative strands come together.
If a thesis genuinely uses mixed methods, several questions may therefore reflect the architecture of the design rather than unnecessary expansion.
However, using one quantitative question and one qualitative question does not by itself make a study meaningfully integrated. The thesis should have a reason for combining those forms of evidence and should explain what can be learned from their integration that neither component provides alone.
Every Question Creates Work Throughout the Thesis
A research question does not appear only in the introduction. It creates consequences across the entire project.
Each question may require justification in the literature review, evidence in the methodology, analysis in the results, interpretation in the discussion, and an answer in the conclusion. As questions accumulate, those obligations accumulate too.
A useful test is to create a question-to-evidence map before finalizing the proposal. For every question, identify:
- why the question matters;
- what data are needed;
- where those data will come from;
- how they will be analyzed; and
- how the answer contributes to the overall research problem.
If you cannot complete that map convincingly for one of the questions, the problem is not solved by calling it secondary.
More Questions Can Require More Participants, Measures, and Analysis
A common mistake is assuming that additional questions are inexpensive because they can be included in the same thesis.
A new question may require another scale, participant group, interview topic, comparison, time point, data source, or statistical model. In quantitative research, the sample required for one analysis may not be adequate for another, particularly for subgroup comparisons, interaction effects, or more complex models.
In qualitative research, broader questions may require more varied participants or enough additional data to develop each aspect of the analysis with sufficient depth.
The question count is therefore less informative than the cumulative methodological burden.
Thesis Scope Is Constrained by More Than Methodology
A thesis is also an academic degree requirement completed within a particular institutional environment. Time, funding, access to participants, ethics approval, supervisory capacity, equipment, researcher expertise, and program deadlines all influence what can realistically be attempted.
A question can be scientifically worthwhile but unsuitable for the current thesis because answering it properly would require resources the project does not have.
This is not a trivial limitation. Feasibility is part of good research-question development. A smaller question answered rigorously is generally preferable to an ambitious collection of questions answered superficially.
Local Thesis Requirements Take Priority Over Generic Advice
Universities and degree programs differ in how they structure theses. Some programs prescribe particular proposal formats, chapter structures, methodological expectations, or distinctions among research questions, objectives, and hypotheses. Others leave these decisions largely to the discipline and supervisory committee.
Watch Out
Do not rely on a generic online rule stating that a thesis must contain a particular number of research questions. Check your university's current thesis manual, graduate-school regulations, departmental guidance, and supervisor or thesis committee requirements.
A Thesis Question Should Not Be Added Merely Because the Data Will Exist
Thesis projects often collect more information than the primary analysis requires. This can tempt researchers to add questions so that every variable appears to have a purpose.
That reverses the logic of research design. Before adding a research question because data will be available, determine whether it addresses a meaningful problem and genuinely belongs in the thesis.
Unused variables are not a methodological emergency.
Secondary Questions Should Not Take Over the Thesis
One question may initially look secondary but gradually require another theory, substantial measurement, extensive analysis, and half of the discussion. At that point, its label and its actual role have diverged.
If a secondary question begins competing with the primary question, reconsider the structure. It may need to be narrowed, postponed, or developed as a separate project.
There Is No Universal Ideal Number of Thesis Questions
A thesis with one carefully formulated question can be entirely appropriate. So can a thesis with several questions.
The appropriate number is the smallest set needed to investigate the research problem adequately while remaining methodologically coherent and feasible. Adding questions simply to make the project appear more substantial usually produces complexity rather than depth.
The same principle explains why there is no fixed answer to how many secondary questions a study can support.

Hypothetical Example
A Thesis on University Students' Critical Use of Generative AI
A master's student wants to investigate university students' critical use of generative AI for academic writing. The initial idea contains several possible questions, and the student needs to decide which belong in the thesis.
Question 1: Describe the phenomenon How do students use generative AI during academic writing? This establishes the practices being investigated.
Question 2: Examine critical evaluation
How do students evaluate the accuracy and credibility of AI-generated academic information? This addresses another central dimension of critical use.
Question 3: Examine a relevant factor
How is students' AI literacy related to their critical evaluation practices? This extends the investigation by examining a theoretically relevant relationship.
Question 4: Consider institutional policy
How do university administrators formulate policies governing generative AI? This remains relevant to the broad topic but introduces a different population, phenomenon, literature, and methodological purpose.
Decision
The first three questions are retained because they form a coherent student-focused investigation. The institutional-policy question is reserved for another project rather than expanding the thesis beyond what its central problem requires.
The thesis has three questions, but three is not the lesson. A different thesis might need one, two, four, or another defensible number. What matters is that each retained question has a clear role in answering the larger research problem.
