How Much Should You Know About a Topic Before You Start Searching?

You do not need to understand a research topic thoroughly before you begin searching. You need enough orientation to start intelligently, then you can use exploratory searching to develop the vocabulary and conceptual understanding needed for more rigorous searches.

01 · The Question

Do You Need to Understand the Topic Before You Search It?

You have chosen a research area, but you barely know its terminology. You are not yet sure which theories matter, who the influential researchers are, which databases cover the field, or even whether the words you are using are the words researchers use.

Should you study the topic first and search later?

That creates an awkward problem: much of the knowledge you need in order to understand a research topic comes from finding and reading its literature in the first place.

You therefore do not need to become an expert before beginning a literature search. You do need enough orientation to make a sensible first attempt, recognize potentially useful material, and learn from what the search reveals. The standard changes later, when you move from exploring a topic to making stronger claims about what its literature contains.

02 · The Short Answer

You Need Enough Knowledge to Begin Learning, Not Enough to Have Finished Learning

In Brief

You do not need extensive prior knowledge of a topic before you start searching its literature. You need a basic understanding of what interests you and enough initial vocabulary to begin an exploratory search; the search itself can then help you learn the field's terminology, concepts, important sources, and boundaries.

What changes is the standard for later searching. Exploring an unfamiliar topic can begin with incomplete knowledge, but a search intended to support strong claims about the available evidence should be developed from substantially better topic and search knowledge.

03 · What You Need to Know

Searching Is One of the Ways You Learn What You Need to Search

Literature searching can appear circular. To search well, you need to know the vocabulary of a field. To learn that vocabulary, you need to find relevant literature. To recognize relevant literature, you need some understanding of the topic.

The way out of that circle is not to postpone searching. It is to distinguish exploratory searching from the more deliberate search you may conduct after becoming familiar with the research area.

Gusenbauer and Haddaway distinguish exploratory searching from systematic searching partly by the searcher's state of knowledge. Exploratory searching is associated with learning and building a conceptual understanding of a topic, whereas systematic searching occurs when the information need is sufficiently developed to support a procedural attempt to identify a relevant evidence base.

This distinction is useful far beyond systematic reviews. It means your first search does not have to be your final search strategy.

You Need a Research Interest, Not Complete Subject Expertise

At minimum, you need some way to describe what you are interested in.

That starting point could be a topic, phenomenon, practical problem, population, technology, theoretical idea, relationship, or preliminary research question. It can still be vague.

For example:

  • university students using generative AI for assignments;
  • teachers experiencing technology-related workload;
  • online learners who stop participating in courses;
  • students having difficulty judging whether online information is trustworthy.

None of these is yet a fully developed research question. Each nevertheless contains enough conceptual direction to begin looking for relevant literature.

This is particularly important when you are entering a field outside your existing expertise. Waiting until you “know enough” can become an indefinite delay because you have not yet created a mechanism for acquiring that knowledge.

Your First Vocabulary Can Be Imperfect

Beginning researchers sometimes assume that a literature search fails if the first keywords are not technically correct.

For exploratory searching, that is not a useful expectation.

Your first terms are probes. Their job is partly to take you close enough to relevant scholarship that you can discover better language.

Suppose you are interested in students who accept incorrect AI-generated answers without checking them. You might begin with phrases such as “students trusting AI answers” or “students checking ChatGPT accuracy.” Relevant literature could introduce you to more established or adjacent concepts such as automation bias, overreliance, trust in automation, verification behavior, information evaluation, or epistemic vigilance.

Those concepts are not automatically synonyms. Some may represent different theoretical phenomena. That is precisely why discovering them matters.

Your search vocabulary should become more precise as your conceptual understanding improves.

Exploratory Searching Is a Learning Activity

When you know little about a topic, your first searches have a different purpose from a final evidence search.

You are trying to discover how the research territory is organized.

Gusenbauer and Haddaway characterize exploratory searching as a learning process in which searchers iteratively develop their mental model of a topic. The search goal may initially be somewhat abstract, and the searcher's understanding and subsequent search behavior can change in response to what is discovered.

This means an early search can legitimately raise more questions than it answers.

You might discover that one apparent topic actually contains several distinct research traditions. You may encounter unfamiliar theories or methodological terminology. You may realize that a concept is studied under different names across disciplines. A paper you expected to be central may lead you to an entirely different body of scholarship through its references.

That is not evidence that the search has gone wrong. If the purpose of the search is to understand the research territory, those discoveries are part of the intended outcome.

A Scoping Search Can Give You the Orientation You Are Missing

One practical way to begin is with a scoping or preliminary search.

The University of Sydney Library describes a scoping search as a relatively quick search using a small number of concepts to learn about a topic, gauge the extent of existing research, identify important authors and papers, narrow the topic, and prepare for a more comprehensive search.

Teachers College at Columbia University similarly recommends an exploratory or preliminary search before developing a more specific research question, while Curtin University Library describes scoping searching as a way to become familiar with key debates and current issues and to refine the research question.

The terminology is not perfectly standardized across disciplines. “Scoping search,” “preliminary search,” and “exploratory search” may be used somewhat differently depending on context. More importantly, a scoping search should not be confused with a scoping review, which is a type of evidence synthesis with its own methodological expectations.

Scoping or exploratory search An early search used to learn about a topic, discover terminology, understand the available literature, test a proposed direction, or prepare a more developed search.
Scoping review A form of evidence synthesis conducted using an explicit review methodology to map or characterize a body of evidence in relation to a defined objective or question.

Relevant Papers Can Teach You How the Field Talks

Once you find even a few genuinely relevant papers, stop treating them only as information to read.

Treat them as evidence about how to search.

Look at the terminology used in the title and abstract. Examine author-supplied keywords and, where the database provides them, controlled vocabulary or subject headings. Notice names of theories, instruments, populations, interventions, methods, and phenomena. Check how the paper describes concepts you had previously expressed in everyday language.

Then examine its references and the papers that cite it.

This can expose terminology that your initial query never contained. It can also show that the topic sits within a larger scholarly conversation you did not know existed.

In formal evidence synthesis, known relevant studies can later become useful when evaluating whether a developing search retrieves material it should plausibly find. At the exploratory stage, their simpler function is educational: they help you become a better-informed searcher.

Review Articles Can Provide Orientation, but They Should Not Become Your Entire Evidence Base

A recent, relevant review article can be particularly useful when entering an unfamiliar research area.

A well-conducted review may help you identify major concepts, recurring terminology, influential studies, methodological patterns, debates, and important references much faster than reading isolated papers at random. Foo and colleagues, in guidance on literature reviews in ecology and evolution, note that recent narrative reviews can be useful during scoping for estimating the amount of available research and locating landmark empirical studies.

But a review is someone else's representation of the literature. Its scope, methods, publication date, and interpretive decisions determine what you see.

Use reviews as maps, not as substitutes for examining the terrain yourself when your research requires it.

You Should Know More Before You Start Making Claims About the Literature

The knowledge threshold changes when your purpose changes.

There is a substantial difference between saying:

“I am searching to learn what researchers have studied about this topic.”

and:

“My search identified the relevant evidence addressing this question.”

The second statement carries a stronger methodological implication. Before making it, you should understand the topic well enough to recognize its important concepts, terminology, boundaries, and likely evidence sources. Otherwise, you may unknowingly construct a search that systematically overlooks relevant work.

This is one reason exploratory searching can precede more formal searching even in systematic evidence synthesis. Gusenbauer and Haddaway argue that systematic searching should be preceded by exploratory searching so researchers can develop their understanding of the topic's concepts and language. Guidance on systematic-review search formulation likewise describes initial scoping searches and iterative strategy development before the final search is executed.

Watch Out

A polished Boolean search string does not compensate for weak conceptual understanding. If you misunderstand the phenomenon, omit an established term, or fail to recognize an important adjacent literature, technical search sophistication can make an incomplete search look more rigorous than it actually is.

You Do Not Need to Know Every Synonym Before the First Search

Search guidance often tells researchers to identify synonyms and related terms before searching. That is good advice for a developed search strategy, but it can be unrealistic at the very beginning of an unfamiliar topic.

How would you know all the synonyms before you had encountered the literature that uses them?

A more realistic sequence is iterative.

Use the language you currently know Begin with one or two central concepts expressed in reasonable terms.
Inspect promising results Look for terminology, subject headings, keywords, theories, authors, and references that appear repeatedly.
Learn the conceptual differences Determine which newly discovered terms are true synonyms, which are broader or narrower concepts, and which represent related but distinct phenomena.
Search again Use the improved vocabulary to retrieve literature your first search may have missed.
Refine the information need As your understanding develops, narrow or restructure the search around the question you actually need to answer.

This is one reason starting relatively broadly can sometimes be more useful than beginning with a highly restrictive query.

You Need Enough Knowledge to Recognize When Two Terms Are Not Synonyms

Expanding vocabulary is not simply a matter of collecting every phrase that appears related to your topic.

Suppose early searching reveals the terms academic engagement, student engagement, behavioral engagement, participation, and learning engagement. Adding all of them indiscriminately to one search may increase retrieval while quietly changing the construct being searched.

Before building a more mature search, you need to understand enough of the conceptual literature to decide how those terms relate.

Ask whether two terms are genuinely interchangeable in the literature, whether one is a subtype of another, whether definitions vary across disciplines, and whether including a related concept would broaden the search beyond the intended question.

This is where topic knowledge becomes part of search quality. Searching is not merely lexical matching. The words stand for concepts, and the concepts have boundaries.

You Do Not Need to Read Every Paper You Retrieve

Exploratory searching often produces large numbers of records because you are intentionally testing concepts and terminology.

You are not obligated to read every result from beginning to end.

At this stage, titles and abstracts can help you identify promising directions. A smaller number of highly relevant papers can then be read more closely. Their references and terminology can guide the next round of searching.

The goal is not to turn every exploratory query into a miniature systematic review. It is to extract enough information from each round of searching to improve your understanding and your next decision.

You Are Ready for More Focused Searching When You Can Explain the Research Territory

There is no universal number of papers you must read before you are “ready.” Ten papers can be transformative in one emerging field and hopelessly inadequate in another mature, multidisciplinary literature.

A more useful test is conceptual rather than numerical.

You are becoming ready to move beyond initial exploration when you can explain, in your own words, what the central phenomenon is, which terminology matters, what major distinctions should not be collapsed, where relevant literature is likely to be found, and what question or evidence need will guide the next search.

You should also be able to recognize that your understanding remains provisional. Topic knowledge continues to develop throughout research.

This is closely connected to how literature engagement and research-question development interact. You do not need complete knowledge before forming a question, just as you do not need a final question before beginning every form of exploratory search.

Expertise Does Not Eliminate the Need for Exploration

Experienced researchers may require less orientation in familiar fields, but expertise does not guarantee that an initial vocabulary is complete.

Terminology changes. New technologies create new labels. Different disciplines can investigate similar phenomena under different conceptual traditions. A review may cross into a population or methodology unfamiliar to the team.

Even systematic-review teams with substantial domain expertise can benefit from exploratory searching because the task is not simply to remember what they already know. It is to develop a search that reflects how the relevant evidence is actually described and indexed.

Knowing a topic well can shorten the learning curve. It does not make the learning phase intellectually unnecessary.

04 · A Practical Example

How You Can Start Searching a Topic You Barely Know

Hypothetical Example

Starting With “Students Believing AI Even When It Is Wrong”

Suppose a graduate student notices that some classmates appear to accept answers from generative AI tools without verifying them. The student thinks this could become a research topic but does not know the relevant theoretical literature or even what the phenomenon is called.

Start with ordinary language The student searches combinations involving university students, generative AI, trust, incorrect answers, checking information, and reliance. The results are imperfect, but several relevant-looking papers appear.
Harvest terminology Titles, abstracts, keywords, and references introduce terms such as overreliance, trust in automation, automation bias, verification, and critical evaluation. The student records these terms rather than assuming they all mean the same thing.
Read strategically A small number of especially relevant papers are examined closely to understand how the concepts differ and which theoretical traditions they belong to.
Follow the literature outward Reference lists and citation links reveal earlier research on human reliance on automated decision aids, while newer studies connect some of those ideas to generative AI.
Search with better knowledge The student can now construct more purposeful searches around the particular form of reliance or verification behavior that has become relevant to the emerging research problem.

The student did not need to know the phrase “automation bias” before beginning. Discovering whether that concept actually fits the phenomenon was part of the learning process.

The mistake would be to take the original everyday terminology, conduct one search, retrieve few results, and conclude that almost nobody has studied the issue.

I Should Read About the Topic Before I Start Searching

Reading and searching are not cleanly separated activities. Searching is one of the main ways you locate the material from which you learn. Begin with enough orientation to make an initial search, then let relevant literature improve your understanding and subsequent searches.

Misconception

I Need the Correct Academic Keywords Before My First Search

You need reasonable starting terms, not a complete vocabulary. Exploratory searching can reveal the terminology researchers actually use. What matters is that you inspect and learn from relevant results rather than repeatedly searching only the words you happened to know at the beginning.

Misconception

If My First Search Finds Very Little, the Topic Has Barely Been Studied

That conclusion is particularly unsafe when you are unfamiliar with the field. Relevant research may use terminology you do not yet know, sit within another discipline, or conceptualize the phenomenon differently. Sparse results should initially prompt investigation of the search before they become evidence about the state of the literature.

Misconception

Every Related Term I Discover Should Be Added as a Synonym

Related concepts are not necessarily equivalent concepts. Before expanding a developed search strategy, examine how the literature defines the terms and whether including them would retrieve evidence outside the intended construct. More search terms can increase retrieval while decreasing conceptual validity.

Misconception

Once I Understand the Topic, I Can Just Type Better Keywords Into Google Scholar

Topic knowledge improves searching, but a rigorous search involves more than vocabulary. Depending on the purpose, you may need to choose appropriate databases, use controlled vocabulary, construct database-specific queries, test retrieval, supplement database searching, and document the process. A developed search strategy is different from a sequence of keyword queries.

Misconception

Experts Do Not Need Preliminary Searches

Expertise provides valuable domain knowledge but does not guarantee complete awareness of terminology, indexing, emerging literature, or adjacent disciplinary concepts. Exploratory searching can still test assumptions and improve the design of a later search.

Do Not Wait for Expertise Before You Begin

If you are hesitating because you feel that you do not yet know enough, change the objective of your first search.

Do not ask it to identify the definitive body of literature. Ask it to make you a better-informed searcher.

A simple decision framework

If you know almost nothing about the topic
Begin with one or two central concepts in the language you currently understand. Look for useful overview material and highly relevant papers rather than attempting an exhaustive search.
If you can find relevant papers but the terminology is unfamiliar
Mine those papers for definitions, keywords, subject headings, theories, references, and conceptually related terminology before searching again.
If you understand the main concepts but your research direction remains unclear
Use exploratory searching to compare possible boundaries, questions, populations, theoretical perspectives, and unresolved issues.
If you can clearly define the information need and recognize the relevant terminology
Move toward a more focused and deliberate search designed around the specific research purpose.
If the search will determine the evidence included in a formal review
Do not rely on your initial exploratory queries. Develop, test, document, and where appropriate peer-review a search strategy suitable for that review methodology.

Your standard should therefore rise as the consequences of missing evidence rise.

A beginner exploring a possible thesis topic can tolerate considerable uncertainty. A researcher claiming to have identified the relevant evidence for a systematic review cannot rely on the same search process merely because it produced useful papers.

That distinction also helps explain why not every literature search needs to be systematic. Exploration and evidence identification serve different purposes and should not be judged as though they were the same search task.

Are You Ready to Start Searching?

Before your first exploratory search, check:
Can I describe the phenomenon, problem, population, concept, or general area I want to understand?
Can I identify at least one or two reasonable terms that could lead me toward relevant literature?
Am I prepared to treat my initial terminology as provisional rather than assuming it matches the language of the field?
When I find a highly relevant paper, will I examine its terminology, keywords, references, and conceptual framing for clues to better searches?
Will I distinguish genuine synonyms from related but conceptually different terms before combining them in a developed search?
Will I avoid treating a small initial result set as proof that little research exists?
Can I recognize when I have learned enough from exploration to formulate a clearer question or information need?
If I eventually need a formal evidence search, will I develop that search separately rather than treating my exploratory queries as sufficient?

Questions About Searching an Unfamiliar Research Topic

Can I start a literature search if I know almost nothing about the topic?

Yes. Begin with a broad research interest and a small number of reasonable terms. Treat the first searches as exploratory: their purpose is partly to help you discover the terminology, concepts, important sources, and boundaries you do not yet know.

How many papers should I read before doing a proper literature search?

There is no universal number. A few highly relevant sources may give you substantial orientation in a small or emerging area, while a complex multidisciplinary topic may require much more exploration. Judge readiness by whether you understand the central concepts and terminology well enough to design the next search, not by reaching an arbitrary paper count.

Should I read review articles first?

Relevant recent reviews can be efficient orientation tools because they may identify important concepts, studies, terminology, debates, and references. Check what kind of review you are reading, its scope, methods, and date, and do not assume that one review represents the entire literature relevant to your eventual question.

How do I find keywords if I do not know the terminology yet?

Search with the language you currently have, identify a few genuinely relevant records, and inspect their titles, abstracts, author keywords, subject headings where available, definitions, and references. Search again using the terminology you discover, while checking whether apparently related terms actually represent the same concept.

What is the difference between a preliminary search and the final literature search?

A preliminary or exploratory search helps you learn about the topic and develop the information need. A later search may be designed to identify the literature needed for a specific research purpose. If that later search supports a formal evidence synthesis, it may require explicit methods, multiple sources, documentation, testing, and substantially greater attention to reproducibility and coverage.

How do I know when I understand the topic well enough?

You should be able to explain the central phenomenon in your own words, recognize important terminology and conceptual distinctions, identify where relevant scholarship is likely to appear, and state what you need the next search to accomplish. You do not need complete mastery, and your understanding should continue developing as the research proceeds.

Can searching itself change what I think my topic is about?

Yes. Exploratory searching is partly a learning process. It can reveal that your original terminology was incomplete, that several different constructs sit beneath one everyday idea, or that the most interesting research problem lies somewhere different from where you initially expected. That learning may legitimately lead you to revise the research question.

The Bottom Line

You do not need to know a research topic thoroughly before you begin searching. You need enough orientation to describe what interests you and make a reasonable first search, then you can use relevant literature to learn the terminology, concepts, boundaries, and scholarly conversations needed for better searches.

The required knowledge increases with the purpose of the search. Exploratory searching can begin under considerable uncertainty; a search intended to support strong claims about the available evidence should be built after that uncertainty has been reduced and should meet the methodological requirements of the research being conducted.
