Searching Is One of the Ways You Learn What You Need to Search
Literature searching can appear circular. To search well, you need to know the vocabulary of a field. To learn that vocabulary, you need to find relevant literature. To recognize relevant literature, you need some understanding of the topic.
The way out of that circle is not to postpone searching. It is to distinguish exploratory searching from the more deliberate search you may conduct after becoming familiar with the research area.
Gusenbauer and Haddaway distinguish exploratory searching from systematic searching partly by the searcher's state of knowledge. Exploratory searching is associated with learning and building a conceptual understanding of a topic, whereas systematic searching occurs when the information need is sufficiently developed to support a procedural attempt to identify a relevant evidence base.
This distinction is useful far beyond systematic reviews. It means your first search does not have to be your final search strategy.
You Need a Research Interest, Not Complete Subject Expertise
At minimum, you need some way to describe what you are interested in.
That starting point could be a topic, phenomenon, practical problem, population, technology, theoretical idea, relationship, or preliminary research question. It can still be vague.
For example:
- university students using generative AI for assignments;
- teachers experiencing technology-related workload;
- online learners who stop participating in courses;
- students having difficulty judging whether online information is trustworthy.
None of these is yet a fully developed research question. Each nevertheless contains enough conceptual direction to begin looking for relevant literature.
This is particularly important when you are entering a field outside your existing expertise. Waiting until you “know enough” can become an indefinite delay because you have not yet created a mechanism for acquiring that knowledge.
Your First Vocabulary Can Be Imperfect
Beginning researchers sometimes assume that a literature search fails if the first keywords are not technically correct.
For exploratory searching, that is not a useful expectation.
Your first terms are probes. Their job is partly to take you close enough to relevant scholarship that you can discover better language.
Suppose you are interested in students who accept incorrect AI-generated answers without checking them. You might begin with phrases such as “students trusting AI answers” or “students checking ChatGPT accuracy.” Relevant literature could introduce you to more established or adjacent concepts such as automation bias, overreliance, trust in automation, verification behavior, information evaluation, or epistemic vigilance.
Those concepts are not automatically synonyms. Some may represent different theoretical phenomena. That is precisely why discovering them matters.
Your search vocabulary should become more precise as your conceptual understanding improves.
Exploratory Searching Is a Learning Activity
When you know little about a topic, your first searches have a different purpose from a final evidence search.
You are trying to discover how the research territory is organized.
Gusenbauer and Haddaway characterize exploratory searching as a learning process in which searchers iteratively develop their mental model of a topic. The search goal may initially be somewhat abstract, and the searcher's understanding and subsequent search behavior can change in response to what is discovered.
This means an early search can legitimately raise more questions than it answers.
You might discover that one apparent topic actually contains several distinct research traditions. You may encounter unfamiliar theories or methodological terminology. You may realize that a concept is studied under different names across disciplines. A paper you expected to be central may lead you to an entirely different body of scholarship through its references.
That is not evidence that the search has gone wrong. If the purpose of the search is to understand the research territory, those discoveries are part of the intended outcome.
A Scoping Search Can Give You the Orientation You Are Missing
One practical way to begin is with a scoping or preliminary search.
The University of Sydney Library describes a scoping search as a relatively quick search using a small number of concepts to learn about a topic, gauge the extent of existing research, identify important authors and papers, narrow the topic, and prepare for a more comprehensive search.
Teachers College at Columbia University similarly recommends an exploratory or preliminary search before developing a more specific research question, while Curtin University Library describes scoping searching as a way to become familiar with key debates and current issues and to refine the research question.
The terminology is not perfectly standardized across disciplines. “Scoping search,” “preliminary search,” and “exploratory search” may be used somewhat differently depending on context. More importantly, a scoping search should not be confused with a scoping review, which is a type of evidence synthesis with its own methodological expectations.
Scoping or exploratory search
An early search used to learn about a topic, discover terminology, understand the available literature, test a proposed direction, or prepare a more developed search.
Scoping review
A form of evidence synthesis conducted using an explicit review methodology to map or characterize a body of evidence in relation to a defined objective or question.
Relevant Papers Can Teach You How the Field Talks
Once you find even a few genuinely relevant papers, stop treating them only as information to read.
Treat them as evidence about how to search.
Look at the terminology used in the title and abstract. Examine author-supplied keywords and, where the database provides them, controlled vocabulary or subject headings. Notice names of theories, instruments, populations, interventions, methods, and phenomena. Check how the paper describes concepts you had previously expressed in everyday language.
Then examine its references and the papers that cite it.
This can expose terminology that your initial query never contained. It can also show that the topic sits within a larger scholarly conversation you did not know existed.
In formal evidence synthesis, known relevant studies can later become useful when evaluating whether a developing search retrieves material it should plausibly find. At the exploratory stage, their simpler function is educational: they help you become a better-informed searcher.
Review Articles Can Provide Orientation, but They Should Not Become Your Entire Evidence Base
A recent, relevant review article can be particularly useful when entering an unfamiliar research area.
A well-conducted review may help you identify major concepts, recurring terminology, influential studies, methodological patterns, debates, and important references much faster than reading isolated papers at random. Foo and colleagues, in guidance on literature reviews in ecology and evolution, note that recent narrative reviews can be useful during scoping for estimating the amount of available research and locating landmark empirical studies.
But a review is someone else's representation of the literature. Its scope, methods, publication date, and interpretive decisions determine what you see.
Use reviews as maps, not as substitutes for examining the terrain yourself when your research requires it.
You Should Know More Before You Start Making Claims About the Literature
The knowledge threshold changes when your purpose changes.
There is a substantial difference between saying:
“I am searching to learn what researchers have studied about this topic.”
and:
“My search identified the relevant evidence addressing this question.”
The second statement carries a stronger methodological implication. Before making it, you should understand the topic well enough to recognize its important concepts, terminology, boundaries, and likely evidence sources. Otherwise, you may unknowingly construct a search that systematically overlooks relevant work.
This is one reason exploratory searching can precede more formal searching even in systematic evidence synthesis. Gusenbauer and Haddaway argue that systematic searching should be preceded by exploratory searching so researchers can develop their understanding of the topic's concepts and language. Guidance on systematic-review search formulation likewise describes initial scoping searches and iterative strategy development before the final search is executed.
Watch Out
A polished Boolean search string does not compensate for weak conceptual understanding. If you misunderstand the phenomenon, omit an established term, or fail to recognize an important adjacent literature, technical search sophistication can make an incomplete search look more rigorous than it actually is.
You Do Not Need to Know Every Synonym Before the First Search
Search guidance often tells researchers to identify synonyms and related terms before searching. That is good advice for a developed search strategy, but it can be unrealistic at the very beginning of an unfamiliar topic.
How would you know all the synonyms before you had encountered the literature that uses them?
A more realistic sequence is iterative.
Use the language you currently know Begin with one or two central concepts expressed in reasonable terms.
Inspect promising results Look for terminology, subject headings, keywords, theories, authors, and references that appear repeatedly.
Learn the conceptual differences Determine which newly discovered terms are true synonyms, which are broader or narrower concepts, and which represent related but distinct phenomena.
Search again Use the improved vocabulary to retrieve literature your first search may have missed.
Refine the information need As your understanding develops, narrow or restructure the search around the question you actually need to answer.
This is one reason starting relatively broadly can sometimes be more useful than beginning with a highly restrictive query.
You Need Enough Knowledge to Recognize When Two Terms Are Not Synonyms
Expanding vocabulary is not simply a matter of collecting every phrase that appears related to your topic.
Suppose early searching reveals the terms academic engagement, student engagement, behavioral engagement, participation, and learning engagement. Adding all of them indiscriminately to one search may increase retrieval while quietly changing the construct being searched.
Before building a more mature search, you need to understand enough of the conceptual literature to decide how those terms relate.
Ask whether two terms are genuinely interchangeable in the literature, whether one is a subtype of another, whether definitions vary across disciplines, and whether including a related concept would broaden the search beyond the intended question.
This is where topic knowledge becomes part of search quality. Searching is not merely lexical matching. The words stand for concepts, and the concepts have boundaries.
You Do Not Need to Read Every Paper You Retrieve
Exploratory searching often produces large numbers of records because you are intentionally testing concepts and terminology.
You are not obligated to read every result from beginning to end.
At this stage, titles and abstracts can help you identify promising directions. A smaller number of highly relevant papers can then be read more closely. Their references and terminology can guide the next round of searching.
The goal is not to turn every exploratory query into a miniature systematic review. It is to extract enough information from each round of searching to improve your understanding and your next decision.
You Are Ready for More Focused Searching When You Can Explain the Research Territory
There is no universal number of papers you must read before you are “ready.” Ten papers can be transformative in one emerging field and hopelessly inadequate in another mature, multidisciplinary literature.
A more useful test is conceptual rather than numerical.
You are becoming ready to move beyond initial exploration when you can explain, in your own words, what the central phenomenon is, which terminology matters, what major distinctions should not be collapsed, where relevant literature is likely to be found, and what question or evidence need will guide the next search.
You should also be able to recognize that your understanding remains provisional. Topic knowledge continues to develop throughout research.
This is closely connected to how literature engagement and research-question development interact. You do not need complete knowledge before forming a question, just as you do not need a final question before beginning every form of exploratory search.
Expertise Does Not Eliminate the Need for Exploration
Experienced researchers may require less orientation in familiar fields, but expertise does not guarantee that an initial vocabulary is complete.
Terminology changes. New technologies create new labels. Different disciplines can investigate similar phenomena under different conceptual traditions. A review may cross into a population or methodology unfamiliar to the team.
Even systematic-review teams with substantial domain expertise can benefit from exploratory searching because the task is not simply to remember what they already know. It is to develop a search that reflects how the relevant evidence is actually described and indexed.
Knowing a topic well can shorten the learning curve. It does not make the learning phase intellectually unnecessary.
