Is Your Study Basic Research or Applied Research?
You may be asked to classify a proposed study as basic research or applied research. At first, the distinction sounds straightforward: basic research produces knowledge, while applied research solves problems. That explanation is convenient, but it is also too crude.
Applied research produces new knowledge too. Basic research can eventually have substantial practical consequences. A study may even pursue fundamental understanding while being motivated by a real-world problem.
The more useful question is therefore not simply whether your research has practical value. It is what the investigation is primarily trying to accomplish.

How Basic and Applied Research Actually Differ
Basic Research Is Primarily About Understanding
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) defines basic research as experimental or theoretical work undertaken primarily to acquire new knowledge about the underlying foundations of phenomena and observable facts, without a particular application or use in view. The U.S. National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) uses the same general definition in its research and development statistics.
The important word is primarily. Basic research is characterized by the immediate purpose of the investigation, not by a requirement that the knowledge must remain useless.
A researcher might investigate how people form trust in automated systems, how memory changes under particular conditions, why a material exhibits a certain property, or how a biological mechanism operates. Such knowledge may later inform technologies, interventions, policies, or professional practice. That later usefulness does not automatically make the original investigation applied research.
Basic Research Can Still Be Motivated by Future Problems
“Without a particular application or use in view” can be misunderstood to mean that basic research must be completely detached from practical concerns. The OECD's Frascati Manual makes the picture more nuanced by distinguishing pure basic research from oriented basic research.
Pure basic research is pursued for the advancement of knowledge without seeking particular economic or social benefits or actively directing the results toward practical problems. Oriented basic research, by contrast, is conducted with the expectation that the resulting broad knowledge base could contribute to solving recognized or anticipated problems in the future.
This is one reason the boundary between basic and applied research can become less tidy in actual research programs. A researcher may care deeply about a practical problem while still asking a fundamentally explanatory question.
Applied Research Is Directed Toward a Specific Practical Objective
Applied research is also an investigation intended to produce new knowledge. What distinguishes it is that the investigation is directed primarily toward a specific practical aim or objective.
The researcher is not merely asking, “How does this phenomenon work?” The study is connected more directly to a practical need: Which approach might address this problem? What intervention works in this context? How could an existing process be improved? What factors should inform a particular decision?
In education, for example, a study could investigate whether a particular instructional intervention improves learning outcomes among a defined group of students. In public health, researchers might examine which communication strategy increases participation in a vaccination program. In computing, a study might investigate a technique for improving the performance of a particular class of systems.
The practical objective does not make the research less scholarly. Applied research still needs an appropriate question, defensible methods, systematic analysis, and conclusions warranted by the evidence.
Basic research
The immediate objective is primarily to extend understanding of phenomena or their underlying foundations, without a specific practical application as the principal aim.
Applied research
The immediate objective is primarily to acquire new knowledge that addresses a specific practical aim, objective, or problem.
The Difference Is Not Simply “Theory vs. Practice”
It is tempting to equate basic research with theory and applied research with practice. That shortcut can misclassify studies.
Applied research may rely heavily on theory. A researcher can use an established theoretical framework to investigate a practical problem. Conversely, basic research can be empirical. Researchers may conduct experiments, observations, interviews, surveys, or other forms of empirical investigation to understand fundamental phenomena.
The classification therefore does not tell you whether a study is theoretical or empirical. Nor does it tell you whether the researcher uses qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods. Those are different dimensions of choosing an appropriate research approach.
Basic and Applied Research Are Not Research Methods
This distinction is especially important when designing a study. “Basic” and “applied” describe the orientation or purpose of research. They do not prescribe how data must be collected or analyzed.
A survey is not inherently applied research. An experiment is not inherently basic research. Interviews are not inherently one or the other. Similar methods may be used for very different purposes.
Consider two studies using interviews with university students. One might seek to develop a deeper conceptual understanding of how students experience intellectual uncertainty. Another might investigate why students are abandoning a university's newly implemented online advising service so that the institution can improve it. The data collection technique may look similar, but the purposes differ.
This is also why your methodological decisions should follow from what the study needs to establish rather than from the methods you already know how to use.
Basic and Applied Research Are Better Understood as Orientations Than Opposing Camps
Some studies fall relatively clearly into one category. Others occupy less obvious territory. Research can generate fundamental understanding while also having foreseeable practical relevance, and programs of research may move between basic and applied objectives over time.
The OECD framework itself recognizes some of this complexity through the category of oriented basic research. It also treats basic research and applied research as two types within a broader research and development framework rather than as judgments about scientific merit.

Where Does Experimental Development Fit?
If you encounter basic and applied research in formal research and development classifications, you may also encounter a third category: experimental development.
Under the OECD framework, experimental development is systematic work that draws on knowledge gained from research and practical experience, produces additional knowledge, and is directed toward producing new products or processes or improving existing ones. This means that not every project aimed at producing something practical should simply be labeled applied research.
For example, investigating a new principle that might solve a technological problem could be applied research, while subsequent systematic work using accumulated knowledge to develop or improve a product or process may fall under experimental development.
The precise classification can matter when an institution, government agency, or funder uses formal R&D definitions. In that situation, use the definitions required by that authority rather than relying on an informal textbook distinction.
Does the Label Actually Matter?
Sometimes it does. Sometimes researchers spend considerably more time arguing about the label than the research warrants, a familiar occupational hazard of classification systems.
The distinction matters when a funding opportunity specifically supports fundamental or use-oriented research, when an institution requires an R&D classification, when research expenditure must be reported under defined categories, or when accurately describing the purpose of a project helps readers understand what the study is intended to accomplish.
Outside such contexts, the label may be less consequential than the alignment among the problem, research question, evidence, method, and claims. Calling a study “applied” does not rescue a weak research question. Calling it “basic” does not make it more intellectually sophisticated.

Before Calling Your Study Basic or Applied Research
Before assigning the label, check:
State the primary purpose of the study in one sentence without using the words “basic” or “applied.”
Ask whether the immediate objective is fundamental understanding or a specific practical aim.
Do not classify a study as applied merely because its findings could eventually be useful.
Do not classify a study by its method; surveys, experiments, interviews, and other methods can support different research purposes.
Check whether “oriented basic research” better captures a study motivated by future problems but not directed toward a specific immediate application.
Check whether a product- or process-oriented project is more appropriately classified as experimental development under the framework you are using.
If the classification is required for funding or reporting, verify the definitions directly with the responsible funder, institution, or authority.
Make sure the label accurately describes the study rather than being used as a claim about its quality, importance, or rigor.
