01 · The Question

Are a Research Problem and a Research Gap the Same Thing?

Researchers often encounter the terms research problem and research gap at roughly the same stage of developing a study. Both can appear in a proposal, introduction, or literature review, and both help explain why research is needed. That makes them easy to blur together.

They are closely related, but treating them as synonyms can create a weak justification for a study. A gap describes a limitation in what is currently known or supported by the available evidence. A research problem identifies the specific issue, uncertainty, difficulty, or question that the study will investigate.

The distinction matters because finding something missing in the literature does not automatically tell you what problem is worth investigating, and identifying an important practical problem does not automatically demonstrate that new research is needed.

A research gap is something important that the existing body of knowledge does not adequately answer or establish; a research problem is the specific issue or uncertainty that your study is designed to investigate.

The two often connect: evidence of a gap can help you formulate and justify a research problem. But they are not universally interchangeable, and a research problem can also originate in a practical, theoretical, methodological, or other substantive concern that you then examine against the existing literature.

How Research Problems and Research Gaps Differ

What Is a Research Gap?

A research gap concerns the state of existing knowledge. It is something that the available research does not adequately establish, explain, compare, test, or resolve.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, in work on identifying research gaps during systematic reviews, defined a research gap as a topic or area in which missing or inadequate information limits the ability to reach a conclusion for a particular question. That definition is especially useful because it shows that a gap does not have to mean that literally no research exists. The problem may instead be that the available evidence is insufficient for a reliable conclusion.

Depending on the field and question, a gap might involve inconsistent findings, inadequate evidence, an important untested assumption, methodological limitations, an underexamined population, or uncertainty about whether existing findings apply under particular conditions.

This is why a defensible gap should emerge from engagement with the literature rather than from an unsupported statement that a topic has never been studied. Before claiming a gap, you need to establish what the existing literature actually leaves unresolved.

What Is a Research Problem?

A research problem is the specific issue, difficulty, uncertainty, contradiction, or phenomenon that warrants systematic investigation. It gives the study something definite to investigate rather than merely identifying a broad topic.

Research-methods treatments do not always draw the boundary between a research problem and a research gap in exactly the same way. Some use the terms very closely, particularly when the problem is an unanswered question in the scholarly literature. Others use research problem more broadly to include practical or theoretical problems that motivate investigation.

That variation in terminology is worth recognizing. What matters is the logic of the study: you should be able to explain what is not adequately understood, what specific problem you will investigate, and why investigating it is worthwhile.

The Simplest Way to Separate Them

Research gap What does the existing evidence or literature not adequately establish?
Research problem What specific issue or uncertainty will this study investigate?

That distinction is more useful than trying to decide which term belongs in a particular chapter or paragraph. Different institutions and disciplines organize proposals differently. Focus on what each claim is doing in your argument.

A Research Gap Is About the Evidence Base

Suppose researchers have studied whether a particular educational intervention improves student performance, but the studies produce inconsistent results and use substantially different outcome measures. The gap is not necessarily "nobody has studied the intervention." Research clearly exists.

The gap may instead be that the available evidence does not yet support a clear conclusion about the intervention's effect under specified conditions. In other words, the limitation lies in what can reasonably be concluded from the existing evidence.

This is also why conflicting findings can sometimes constitute a meaningful research gap. The important question is not simply whether studies disagree, but whether the disagreement leaves a consequential uncertainty that further research can address.

A Research Problem Gives the Study a Specific Target

Once you understand the relevant evidence, you can formulate a more precise problem. Using the educational example, the research problem might be that it remains unclear whether the intervention improves a defined outcome for a particular group under specified conditions.

Notice how this moves from a description of the literature to an investigable issue. That problem can then be narrowed into research questions, objectives, hypotheses where appropriate, and a suitable research design.

Does the Research Gap Always Come First?

Not necessarily in the researcher's actual thought process. Research is rarely as linear as textbook diagrams suggest.

You might begin because you notice a practical problem, encounter an unexplained phenomenon, question a theory, observe contradictory findings, or identify an unanswered question while reading. You then examine the literature to determine what is already known and whether additional research is justified.

Alternatively, a literature review or systematic review may reveal a gap first, from which a specific research problem is developed.

So it is safer to think of problem formulation and literature review as an iterative process. An initial problem sends you to the literature; the literature may change, narrow, or even eliminate that problem; the revised problem then determines what additional evidence you need to examine.

Not Every Gap Automatically Becomes a Good Research Problem

A database search can reveal countless things that have received little attention. That does not make every absence worth turning into a study.

A meaningful problem requires more than novelty. You need to ask whether resolving the uncertainty would improve understanding, test an important claim, inform a consequential decision, strengthen evidence, address a real practical need, or otherwise make a defensible contribution.

This is the crucial step between finding something missing and deciding to research it. A gap can exist and still be trivial. Before building a project around one, evaluate whether filling the gap would actually matter.

Watch Out

The absence of studies matching an extremely specific combination of population, location, variables, and method is not automatically evidence of an important research gap. Ask what uncertainty that absence creates and why resolving it would change what researchers or practitioners can understand, explain, predict, or decide.

A Practical Problem Is Not Automatically a Research Gap Either

The reverse mistake is equally important. A serious real-world problem may exist even when researchers already understand its causes and effective responses reasonably well. In that situation, the central challenge may be implementation, resources, policy, or practice rather than missing knowledge.

For example, an organization might have poor compliance with a well-established safety procedure. The practical problem is real. But if strong evidence already explains how to improve compliance in comparable settings, simply observing poor compliance does not by itself establish a research gap.

New research could still be justified if an important uncertainty remains, but that uncertainty needs to be demonstrated rather than assumed.

The Gap, Problem, and Research Question Do Different Jobs

A third concept often enters the discussion: the research question. It is useful to keep all three distinct.

Research gap Existing evidence does not adequately resolve an important uncertainty.
Research problem You define the particular issue or uncertainty that warrants investigation.
Research question You state what the study will attempt to answer in a focused, researchable form.

These elements should align, but they are not merely three labels for the same sentence. The gap helps justify the need for knowledge, the problem defines the target of investigation, and the question operationalizes what you intend to find out.

Remote Work and Early-Career Employees

Imagine that you are interested in how remote work affects early-career employees. After reviewing the relevant literature, you find numerous studies of remote work and job performance, but the available evidence concerning mentoring and professional development among employees at the beginning of their careers is limited and does not support a clear conclusion.

Topic Remote work among early-career employees.
Research gap Existing evidence does not adequately establish how sustained remote work affects access to mentoring and professional development among early-career employees.
Research problem There is insufficient understanding of how sustained remote work shapes mentoring access and professional development for early-career employees in the setting being investigated.
Research question How does sustained remote work influence early-career employees' access to mentoring and perceived opportunities for professional development in that setting?

The wording would need to change once the actual literature, population, setting, concepts, and research design were established. The example illustrates the logic rather than providing a sentence template to copy.

It also demonstrates why the gap should not simply say, "No studies have examined remote work among these employees." Even if a search initially appears to support that claim, a stronger justification explains what remains uncertain and why the uncertainty matters. That avoids relying on an absolute claim that no one has studied the topic before.

A practical problem and a gap in knowledge are different claims. A problem can persist even when researchers already know a great deal about its causes and possible solutions. To claim a research gap, identify what relevant knowledge remains inadequate or uncertain.

Misconception

Anything Missing From the Literature Is a Research Problem Worth Studying

The literature will always contain unexplored combinations of variables, populations, methods, and locations. Absence alone does not establish significance. A useful research problem requires a reason that investigating the missing or uncertain knowledge would matter.

Misconception

The Research Gap Must Mean That No Previous Studies Exist

A gap can remain within a substantial literature. Existing studies may provide inconsistent results, inadequate evidence, weak methods, limited coverage, or insufficient information for a particular conclusion. What matters is what the evidence cannot yet establish, not simply the number of publications.

Misconception

A Few Studies Automatically Prove That More Research Is Needed

Counting studies is rarely enough. A small number of rigorous, directly relevant studies may provide stronger evidence than a large collection of weak or indirect studies. Conversely, many publications can leave major uncertainties unresolved. Claims that "few studies" exist need a substantive explanation of what remains uncertain.

That is a formatting convention, not a universal methodological rule. Universities, disciplines, journals, and supervisors may use these terms differently or organize them differently. Follow the requirements that apply to your work while ensuring that the underlying reasoning remains clear.

How to Connect Your Research Gap to Your Research Problem

When developing a study, do not worry first about producing perfect sentences labeled "gap" and "problem." Establish the reasoning that connects them.

A simple decision framework

If you begin with an interesting topic
Review the literature and identify the important questions, uncertainties, limitations, or disputes that remain.
If you begin with a practical or theoretical problem
Examine the existing evidence before assuming that new research is required.
If you identify something that has received little research
Explain why that absence creates a consequential uncertainty rather than treating novelty as sufficient justification.
If you can define an important unresolved issue
Turn it into a focused, feasible research problem and develop research questions that directly address it.

Before finalizing the study, also check whether the gap is still current. Literature moves quickly, and a claim based on an old review can become obsolete when new evidence appears. A targeted search can help you verify that the apparent gap has not already been addressed.

The strongest justification usually forms a chain: existing evidence establishes what is known; critical evaluation reveals what remains uncertain; the importance of that uncertainty is explained; and the proposed study targets a specific, researchable problem.

Before finalizing your research problem, check:
Can you state what the existing evidence already establishes before describing what is missing?
Can you identify the specific uncertainty, limitation, contradiction, or missing evidence that constitutes the proposed gap?
Have you supported the gap through relevant literature rather than relying on an unsupported claim?
Can you explain why resolving the gap would matter?
Can you state the specific research problem your study will investigate?
Does your research question directly address that problem?
Have you checked recent literature to make sure the proposed gap still exists?
Have you avoided assuming that a new population, location, variable combination, or method automatically creates an important gap?

Frequently Asked Questions About Research Problems and Research Gaps

Which comes first, the research problem or the research gap?

Either can appear first in your actual thinking. You may notice a practical or theoretical problem and then investigate the literature, or a literature review may reveal an unresolved gap that leads to a research problem. In a finished proposal, the important requirement is a clear logical connection between the existing evidence, the unresolved issue, and the study you propose.

Can a research problem exist without a research gap?

A practical problem can certainly exist without demonstrating a gap in scholarly knowledge. Whether that problem justifies a new research study depends on what relevant uncertainty remains and what the proposed investigation could contribute. In some academic traditions, however, "research problem" is defined specifically in terms of a gap in knowledge, so terminology can vary.

Can a research gap exist without becoming my research problem?

Yes. You may identify many gaps while reviewing a field but choose to investigate only one, or none of them. Some gaps are trivial, infeasible to address, outside your scope, or less important than other unresolved questions.

Is a research gap the same as a problem statement?

Not necessarily. A research gap describes an inadequacy or unresolved issue in existing knowledge, while a problem statement articulates the specific problem your proposed study will address and usually explains its significance and context. Institutional terminology varies, so follow your university's required structure where one is specified.

Does every study need to claim a research gap?

That depends on the study's purpose, research tradition, and institutional or publication requirements. Not every legitimate research project needs to make a sweeping novelty claim. The more useful question is whether the study has a defensible reason for being conducted. Is changing the population or country enough to create a research gap?

Not automatically. A different population or context matters when there is a defensible reason to expect that existing knowledge may not transfer adequately, or when the missing evidence has important consequences. Simply changing a location or sample does not establish significance by itself.

How do I know whether my research gap is genuine?

Search the relevant literature systematically enough to understand what has already been established, evaluate the quality and applicability of that evidence, and state precisely what remains unresolved. A genuine gap should be supported by the evidence base rather than created by narrow searching or exaggerated novelty claims.
