Can One Database Be Enough for Some Research Questions?

One database can sometimes be enough for a focused research task, but there is no universal one-database rule. Whether it is defensible depends on the review purpose, subject coverage, evidence sought, and consequences of missing relevant studies.

01 · The Question

Do You Really Need to Search Multiple Databases Every Time?

Advice about literature searching often sounds simple: never search just one database. The reasoning seems sensible. Different databases contain different publications, so searching more than one should reduce the chance of missing relevant research.

But research questions differ. So do literature reviews.

A researcher conducting an exploratory search for background literature does not have the same retrieval requirements as a team conducting a systematic review of clinical interventions. A narrowly defined question may be concentrated within one disciplinary database, while an interdisciplinary question may draw evidence from several largely separate research communities.

So can one database ever be enough? Yes, sometimes. The harder question is what evidence would justify that decision.

02 · The Short Answer

One Database Can Sometimes Be Enough, but Not by Default

In Brief

One database can sometimes be sufficient for a focused, exploratory, or otherwise limited research question when that database provides strong coverage of the literature needed. It should not, however, be assumed to be sufficient for systematic or highly comprehensive reviews, where multiple databases and supplementary search methods are commonly needed to reduce the risk of missing eligible studies.

The decision should be based on the purpose of the review, disciplinary breadth, database coverage, publication types, and acceptable risk of missed evidence. There is no universal number of databases that makes a search rigorous merely by being reached.

03 · What You Need to Know

When a Single Database May Be Defensible and When It Is Not

First, Define What You Mean by “Enough”

The word enough is doing considerable methodological work in this question.

If your goal is to find several credible studies that help you understand an unfamiliar topic, one well-chosen database may be entirely adequate. If your goal is to claim that you systematically identified the available evidence meeting predefined eligibility criteria, the standard is considerably higher.

Enough for discovery The database retrieves sufficient relevant literature for you to understand a topic, identify important concepts, and continue the research process.
Enough for comprehensive evidence identification The search provides defensible coverage of the eligible literature at the level required by the review methodology.

A database can satisfy the first standard without satisfying the second.

The Type of Literature Review Changes the Answer

Not every review makes the same claim about its search.

A narrative literature review, thesis background section, conceptual paper, or preliminary research scan may use a purposive search designed to identify relevant and influential literature rather than every eligible publication. One strong database may sometimes provide an acceptable starting point or even the principal search environment for such work, depending on the topic.

A systematic review usually makes a stronger claim about how studies were identified. Search methods become part of the research design and must be sufficiently sensitive, transparent, and reproducible for the review's purpose.

PRISMA-S, the reporting extension for literature searches in systematic reviews, notes that no single database can provide a complete and accurate list of all studies meeting systematic-review criteria because databases differ in both content and indexing. These differences underpin recommendations to search multiple databases in systematic reviews.

That does not establish that every piece of academic writing must use multiple databases. It establishes that the acceptable risk of missed evidence depends on what the search is supposed to accomplish.

No Database Contains All Scholarly Literature

Even very large databases are selective.

Scopus and Web of Science have extensive multidisciplinary coverage, but their source lists are not identical. MEDLINE has deep biomedical coverage but does not attempt to represent all scholarly disciplines. Specialized databases such as APA PsycInfo, ERIC, and CINAHL focus on particular research domains.

Google Scholar provides exceptionally broad scholarly discovery, yet its coverage, search functionality, and transparency differ from conventional bibliographic databases.

Consequently, selecting one database always creates a boundary around the searchable literature. The important question is whether that boundary is acceptable for your particular research purpose.

A Single Database Is More Plausible for a Narrowly Concentrated Topic

One database becomes more defensible when the relevant evidence is strongly concentrated within the database's documented scope.

Imagine a focused question whose literature is overwhelmingly published in journals indexed by one major specialized database. If the task is a targeted narrative review rather than an exhaustive evidence synthesis, searching that database carefully may provide sufficient material.

The situation changes when the topic crosses disciplinary boundaries. A question about adolescent mental health and social media, for example, may involve psychology, psychiatry, communication, public health, education, and sociology. It becomes harder to justify a single database unless you have evidence that it adequately represents those literatures.

This is why you should examine whether a database actually covers the field or fields relevant to your question rather than inferring adequacy from its overall size.

One Database May Be Enough for a Particular Task Without Being Enough for the Entire Review

Database searching is only one part of literature discovery.

You might use one database to identify a strong set of seed publications, then examine their reference lists, follow citing papers, search repositories, investigate conference proceedings, or locate policy and grey literature elsewhere.

In that situation, saying that the research used "one database" can be technically true while understating the broader search process.

One database Only one bibliographic database was searched.
One search source No other databases, citation searches, registers, repositories, websites, reference lists, or supplementary discovery methods were used.

Those are not equivalent methodological claims.

Searching More Databases Usually Improves Coverage, but With Diminishing Returns

Multiple databases often overlap substantially. The first well-chosen database may retrieve a large proportion of the relevant literature. A second may add fewer unique studies, and later databases may add progressively smaller numbers.

That does not make the additional records unimportant. In a systematic review, one unique eligible study could matter, particularly if it changes an effect estimate, introduces an underrepresented population, or provides evidence with different findings.

At the same time, every additional database creates work. Search strategies must be translated into database-specific syntax. Records must be exported and deduplicated. Additional titles and abstracts must be screened.

The objective is therefore not to maximize the number of databases. It is to obtain appropriate coverage efficiently enough for the methodological purpose.

Research Shows Why the Answer Cannot Be Reduced to a Fixed Number

Empirical studies of database searching illustrate both the value of multiple databases and the importance of context.

In a prospective study of 58 systematic reviews, Bramer and colleagues found that 16% of included references retrieved through database searching were found in only one of the databases searched. Their best-performing combination for the biomedical reviews examined was Embase, MEDLINE, Web of Science Core Collection, and Google Scholar, with specialized databases sometimes contributing additional unique references when the topic matched their disciplinary focus.

That finding should not be converted into a universal rule that every review in every discipline requires those four resources. The study examined a particular set of systematic reviews and database combinations. Its more transferable lesson is that relevant studies can be distributed across databases and that the contribution of specialized sources depends on the topic.

Research on overviews of reviews provides another illustration. A methodological study examining health-related systematic reviews found that MEDLINE alone captured a high proportion of the included reviews but did not achieve the study's 95% threshold. Combining MEDLINE with Epistemonikos and reference checking substantially increased retrieval.

The pattern matters more than memorizing the percentages: a strong single database may retrieve most of what you need without retrieving everything your methodology requires.

Systematic Reviews Usually Need More Than One Database

For systematic reviews, relying on a single database generally requires much stronger justification than it would for an exploratory or narrative search.

The reason is not ceremonial compliance with a database count. It is the risk that the database omits eligible studies because of its source coverage or indexing.

PRISMA-S explicitly recognizes differences in database coverage and indexing as reasons for multiple-database searching. Major methodological guidance in fields such as healthcare likewise expects researchers to search appropriate combinations of bibliographic databases and, where relevant, additional sources.

Watch Out

Do not turn “search at least two databases” or any other numerical threshold into a universal methodological law. The correct number depends on the research question, eligible evidence, database coverage, discipline, and review methodology. A database count is not a substitute for a coverage argument.

A Second Database Is Particularly Important When It Covers a Different Research Community

Adding a database that substantially duplicates the first may contribute less than adding one that represents another relevant discipline.

Suppose a review concerns anxiety among university students. A psychology database may be central. If the research question also concerns academic interventions, an education database could contribute literature from a different disciplinary community. If clinical interventions are included, biomedical databases may become relevant as well.

The value of an additional database is therefore not determined solely by how many records it adds. What matters is whether it captures a part of the evidence landscape that would otherwise be underrepresented.

This is one reason specialized databases deserve consideration when their disciplinary focus aligns with the research question.

More Databases Cannot Rescue a Poor Search Strategy

Database quantity and search quality are separate issues.

You can search six databases badly. You can also search one database with great technical precision while still missing publications because that database does not contain them.

Search sensitivity within a database How effectively your strategy retrieves relevant records that are available in that database.
Coverage across databases Whether the selected information sources collectively contain the relevant literature in the first place.

A rigorous search considers both.

If you do search multiple databases, do not simply paste an identical query into each one. Differences in controlled vocabulary, fields, operators, and automatic query processing mean that the same search can produce different results across databases. The search concepts should be translated appropriately for each platform.

Access Limitations Do Not Automatically Make One Database Methodologically Sufficient

Sometimes the reason for using one database is simply that it is the only subscription resource available.

That is a legitimate practical constraint, but availability and methodological sufficiency are not the same thing.

If one database is all you can access, identify what it covers, use appropriate freely available resources and supplementary methods, and report important limitations honestly. Do not redefine the available literature as whatever happens to exist in the database your institution purchased.

There are practical ways to respond when you do not have access to a major research database without pretending that unavailable resources would have added nothing.

Sometimes the Correct Answer Really Is One Database

After all these cautions, there are still circumstances in which one database can reasonably be enough.

A researcher might be conducting a preliminary search to determine whether a topic has been studied. An undergraduate assignment may ask for a small number of peer-reviewed articles. A narrowly scoped narrative review may draw primarily from one discipline with excellent database coverage. A methodological project might intentionally analyze publications indexed in one particular database, making that database part of the study's defined population rather than an attempt to represent all scholarship.

In such cases, adding databases mechanically may contribute little to the actual research objective.

The defensible statement is not "one database is always enough." It is "one database is sufficient for this purpose because the search objective and coverage requirements do not require more."

04 · A Practical Example

When One Database Is Reasonable and When the Same Choice Becomes Risky

Hypothetical Example

Two researchers studying the same broad topic

Two researchers are interested in academic procrastination among university students. Both have access to a major psychology database, but their research purposes are different.

Researcher A needs background literature The first researcher is developing a research proposal and wants to understand major theories, measures, and previous findings. A carefully searched psychology database retrieves a substantial body of highly relevant literature.
One database may be sufficient for the immediate task The researcher follows references from key papers and uses the search to refine the research problem. There is no claim that every eligible study on academic procrastination has been identified.
Researcher B is conducting a systematic review The second researcher plans to identify all eligible studies of interventions intended to reduce academic procrastination in university students.
The evidence now crosses disciplinary boundaries Potential studies could appear in psychology, education, higher education, educational technology, or health-related literature. Missing eligible studies could affect the review's conclusions.
One database becomes difficult to justify The researcher evaluates additional education, multidisciplinary, and other relevant sources, translates the search appropriately, and supplements database searching with citation searching where required.

The topic did not change. The methodological purpose did. That change is enough to alter what counts as an adequate search.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Common Misunderstandings About How Many Databases to Search

Misconception

Every Literature Review Must Search at Least Three Databases

There is no universal database count that applies to every form of literature review. Requirements depend on the review methodology, research question, discipline, and expected comprehensiveness. Formal review guidance should be followed where applicable, but an arbitrary number is not a substitute for justified source selection.

Misconception

If One Database Finds Hundreds of Relevant Papers, It Must Be Enough

A large result set says little about what is absent. The database might retrieve hundreds of relevant records while missing an important segment of the literature indexed elsewhere. Coverage must be assessed separately from result volume.

Misconception

Searching More Databases Automatically Makes the Review More Rigorous

Additional appropriate databases can improve coverage, but database accumulation is not rigor by itself. Poorly chosen databases, weak search strategies, and inadequate documentation remain methodological problems regardless of how many resources were searched.

Misconception

If the Second Database Mostly Finds Duplicates, It Was Useless

Overlap is expected and can provide evidence that important literature is represented in more than one source. The value of an additional database also depends on the unique eligible records it contributes, not simply the percentage of results that duplicate the first database.

A Large Multidisciplinary Database Makes Specialized Databases Unnecessary

Broad coverage does not guarantee equivalent coverage or indexing within every specialty. A field-specific database may contribute distinctive journals, subject headings, document types, or records that are important to the question.

Access constraints are real, but they do not determine methodological sufficiency. Use the strongest accessible combination of databases and supplementary sources available, and disclose important limitations when the ideal search cannot be conducted.

How to Decide Whether One Database Is Enough

Instead of starting with a required number, start with the literature your research question needs to represent.

A simple decision framework

If you are conducting an exploratory or preliminary search
One well-chosen database may be enough to understand the topic, identify terminology, and locate useful starting literature.
If you are writing a focused narrative or background review
One database may sometimes be defensible, but consider whether important literature exists outside its disciplinary and publication coverage.
If your question is strongly concentrated within one discipline
Investigate whether the major database for that field provides sufficiently strong coverage for the purpose of your review rather than assuming either sufficiency or insufficiency.
If your question crosses several disciplines
Multiple complementary databases are more likely to be warranted because no single source may adequately represent all relevant research communities.
If you are conducting a systematic or highly comprehensive review
Treat one-database searching as an exception requiring strong methodological justification and follow the database-searching guidance appropriate to your review type and discipline.
If important evidence exists outside conventional journal databases
Add appropriate supplementary sources such as citation searching, registers, repositories, conference proceedings, theses, preprints, government sources, or other grey literature rather than treating another general database as the only possible addition.

Before deciding, inspect the database's official coverage documentation. Identify several known relevant papers and determine whether they are indexed. Look at where important researchers in the field publish. Examine whether the database includes the document types and historical period your question requires.

Then ask a more useful question than "How many databases should I search?" Ask: What important literature could plausibly be missing from the sources I have chosen?

If you can answer that question convincingly, your database selection has a methodological rationale rather than a numerical one.

Before limiting your search to one database, check:
What type of literature review or research task am I conducting?
Am I trying to find useful literature or claiming comprehensive identification of eligible evidence?
Which disciplines contribute meaningfully to my research question?
Does the selected database demonstrably cover the core journals, years, and publication types relevant to those disciplines?
Are there specialized databases likely to contain unique relevant literature?
Can the database retrieve several known relevant studies that should be discoverable through my strategy?
Could important evidence exist in conference proceedings, dissertations, preprints, registers, reports, or other sources outside this database?
Does my review methodology or reporting standard expect searches of particular databases or multiple information sources?
Can I explain why the selected search sources provide adequate coverage without relying on convenience or an arbitrary database count?

Frequently Asked Questions About Using One Database

Can I use only one database for a literature review?

Sometimes. A single database may be adequate for a focused, exploratory, or narrowly disciplinary review if its coverage matches the purpose of the search. Reviews claiming systematic or comprehensive identification of evidence generally require stronger justification and often multiple information sources.

How many databases should I search for a literature review?

There is no universal number. Select enough appropriate sources to provide the level of coverage required by the research question and review methodology. Two poorly chosen databases are not automatically better than one strong database, and three databases do not become methodologically sufficient merely because three sounds reassuring.

Can one database be enough for a systematic review?

It should generally not be assumed to be sufficient. Systematic-review search guidance commonly recommends multiple databases because no single database reliably contains all eligible studies. Any departure from the relevant methodological guidance should be justified in relation to the review question and evidence base.

Is Scopus alone enough for a literature review?

It depends on the review. Scopus provides broad multidisciplinary coverage, but it does not contain every scholarly source or everything indexed in other databases. For exploratory work it may provide substantial coverage; for comprehensive reviews, assess relevant specialized and complementary databases rather than assuming that its size establishes sufficiency.

Is Web of Science alone enough?

The same principle applies. Web of Science can be a powerful multidisciplinary source, but its coverage is selective and does not completely duplicate other databases. The question should be answered in relation to your field, publication types, historical period, and review methodology.

Is PubMed alone enough for a systematic review?

Not as a general rule. PubMed is central to many biomedical searches, but systematic reviews may require other databases and sources depending on the intervention, discipline, study design, and applicable guidance. PubMed itself also contains more than MEDLINE, so be precise about which resource and interface you actually searched.

Is Google Scholar alone enough?

Google Scholar can be excellent for broad discovery and citation chasing, but its search controls, coverage transparency, and reproducibility create limitations for systematic searching. Whether Google Scholar is enough for a literature review depends strongly on the review's purpose and methodological requirements.

Does searching a second database matter if almost everything is duplicated?

It can. The unique records may include eligible studies, and their importance cannot be judged from their small number alone. For less comprehensive research tasks, however, the marginal gain may not justify the additional work. The decision should reflect the consequences of missing relevant evidence.

Do not choose the number of databases first and justify it afterward. Define what your search needs to accomplish, map the relevant disciplines and publication types, examine database coverage, and consider the consequences of missing evidence. The defensible number of databases is the number needed for the research question and methodology, not a ritual number that every methods section must somehow appease.
