Is an Easy Research Topic Actually a Smart Choice?
You may be choosing among several research topics and notice that one would be much easier to complete. The participants are accessible. The data are readily available. The methods are familiar. The analysis seems straightforward. You could probably finish the project comfortably within your deadline.
Is that a good reason to choose it?
Possibly. Research feasibility matters, particularly for a thesis, dissertation, student project, or study with fixed resources. But there is a difference between choosing a manageable project and choosing the least demanding project you can find. A study can be easy because it is appropriately focused and well designed. It can also be easy because the question asks very little.

The Difference Between Easy Research and Feasible Research
Feasibility is a legitimate criterion for choosing a topic
A research question is not useful to you if you cannot realistically answer it. Your available time, funding, expertise, participants, data, equipment, institutional access, ethical requirements, and methodological demands all affect whether a proposed study can actually be completed.
Feasibility is therefore not an embarrassing compromise. It is part of responsible research planning. Research guidance on topic refinement similarly treats feasibility in terms of whether research can realistically be undertaken within constraints such as time, budget, scope, question complexity, and the available evidence base.
When choosing among possible research topics , asking “Can I actually complete this well?” is every bit as legitimate as asking whether the subject interests you.
Easy and feasible are not the same thing
Easy
The project appears to require relatively little difficulty, effort, complexity, or uncertainty.
Feasible
The project can realistically be completed to an acceptable standard with the available time, evidence, expertise, access, resources, and ethical approvals.
A project can be difficult but feasible. It may require substantial reading, careful analysis, or technically demanding methods, yet remain achievable with appropriate preparation and resources.
A project can also look easy but turn out to be infeasible. A simple survey may become impossible if you cannot recruit the required population. A straightforward analysis may fail because the necessary variables are unavailable. A small interview study may require access that an organisation will not grant.
The practical target is therefore not minimum difficulty. It is acceptable feasibility.
A narrowly focused question can be both simple and valuable
Researchers sometimes equate complexity with academic quality. That is a mistake. Adding variables, populations, theoretical frameworks, methods, research questions, or analytical techniques does not automatically make a study more important.
A carefully bounded question may be easier to investigate precisely because its scope has been thought through. It can allow more appropriate data collection, clearer analysis, and more defensible interpretation. In systematic review methodology, for example, clearer and more precise key questions can improve feasibility by making decisions about relevant evidence and synthesis more manageable.
Making a project simpler by sharpening its question can therefore improve research quality. Making it simpler by removing everything intellectually consequential is another matter.
Convenience can help with feasibility without establishing research value
Perhaps you already have access to students in your class, employees in your organisation, public datasets, inexpensive instruments, or software you know well. Those advantages deserve consideration because they reduce execution risk.
But convenient access answers only one question: can you obtain the evidence? It does not answer another: is there a good reason to collect or analyse it?
This distinction is particularly important when available data influence your choice of topic . Existing access can make one otherwise worthwhile question preferable to another, but the existence of convenient data does not create a meaningful research problem by itself.
Beware of questions designed around whatever is easiest to measure
Ease can quietly reshape a research problem. Suppose you want to understand why students disengage from an online course. Motivation, workload, instructional design, social belonging, technological barriers, and competing responsibilities may all be relevant. Yet the easiest information to obtain is final grades and login frequency.
You could legitimately develop a narrower question that those data can answer. What you should not do is treat convenient indicators as though they capture the entire phenomenon simply because measuring the important constructs would be harder.
The method must remain appropriate to the question. The question should not be distorted merely to accommodate the easiest method.
An easy topic can still be difficult to publish or defend
A project that is simple to execute may create difficulties later if the research problem is weak. Reviewers, examiners, supervisors, and readers can reasonably ask why the study was necessary, what it contributes, whether the question has already been adequately answered, and why the chosen evidence supports the conclusions.
This is why choosing a topic because it seems easy to turn into a publication and choosing one because it seems easy to complete are different decisions. Neither publication strategy nor execution convenience can substitute for a worthwhile question.
Difficulty is not a virtue either
The opposite mistake is choosing an unnecessarily ambitious topic because difficulty feels academically impressive. A project does not become stronger because it requires three methods instead of one, five populations instead of one, or a sophisticated statistical technique that the question does not require.
Nor should a researcher deliberately choose an impractical study to demonstrate ambition. A tightly scoped project completed rigorously can contribute more than an elaborate project that produces incomplete data, methodological compromises, or conclusions that exceed the evidence.
Watch Out
Do not confuse research difficulty with research quality. The best topic is not necessarily the easiest one or the hardest one. It is one whose importance and methodological demands are proportionate to what you can realistically accomplish.
The right amount of difficulty depends on the project
An undergraduate project, master's thesis, doctoral dissertation, funded research programme, and multi-institutional study do not operate under identical expectations or resources. What counts as manageable must therefore be judged in context.
Your own experience matters too. A method that is routine for an experienced research group may require substantial training for a beginning researcher. Conversely, a technically sophisticated method may be entirely feasible if appropriate expertise and infrastructure are already available.
The question is not whether the topic is objectively easy. It is whether the project is appropriately demanding for its purpose and realistically executable in your circumstances.
06 · What This Means for You
Choose the Simplest Study That Still Answers a Worthwhile Question
When comparing topics, do not ask only which one will be easiest. Ask what level of complexity is actually necessary to produce credible evidence about the problem you care about.
A simple decision framework
If a topic is manageable because the question is sharply focused
Treat simplicity as a strength, provided the question remains meaningful.
If a topic is easy only because the question is trivial or already adequately answered
Do not let convenience become the justification for conducting the study.
If a worthwhile project is too ambitious for your resources
Narrow the population, scope, question, evidence requirements, or design while preserving the core research problem where possible.
If the easiest available data do not adequately represent what you need to study
Find better evidence or change the question transparently rather than overstating what convenient measures can tell you.
If two topics are similarly worthwhile
Greater feasibility can reasonably become the deciding advantage.
There is no prize for making a research project unnecessarily painful. Equally, “I can finish this quickly” is not a research rationale. Aim for disciplined economy: enough scope, evidence, and methodological sophistication to answer the question convincingly, but no more complexity than the question requires.

Before committing to the topic, check:
Can I explain why the research question matters without saying that it is easy, convenient, or quick to complete?
Can I realistically complete the literature review, ethics requirements, recruitment or data access, analysis, interpretation, and writing within my available time?
Does the proposed method answer the actual research question rather than merely use the easiest data available?
Have I removed unnecessary complexity without removing the substantive value of the study?
Do I have, or can I realistically acquire, the methodological expertise required?
Are the required participants, data, equipment, software, facilities, and permissions realistically accessible?
Could I narrow the project further if unexpected constraints arise without destroying the research question?
If two topics are equally feasible, have I considered which one offers the more meaningful question or contribution?
