Should You Choose a Research Topic Because It Is Easier to Publish?

Publication prospects can reasonably influence your choice of research topic, but they should not determine it. A strong topic balances a worthwhile question, rigorous and feasible research, and a realistic path to reaching the audience that needs the findings.

01 · The Question

Should Publishability Influence the Research Topic You Choose?

You may have several research ideas that are interesting, feasible, and academically defensible, yet some appear much easier to publish than others. One fits a growing literature, another aligns neatly with journals in your field, while a third addresses a useful but unfashionable problem. If publication matters for graduation, promotion, funding, or your academic career, it can be tempting to choose whichever topic seems most likely to produce a paper.

That consideration is not inherently inappropriate. Researchers work within a publication system, and thinking about how a completed study might eventually reach an audience can be sensible. The difficulty begins when anticipated publishability starts determining what questions you are willing to ask, what results you hope to obtain, or which worthwhile problems you decide are not worth studying.

02 · The Short Answer

Publication Potential Can Matter, but It Should Not Be the Main Reason

It is reasonable to consider whether a research topic has a plausible path to publication, but you generally should not choose a topic mainly because you think it will be easier to publish.

Publishability depends on more than the topic itself. The importance and clarity of the question, methodological rigor, contribution to existing knowledge, fit with a journal's scope, and quality of the eventual manuscript can all matter. Publication prospects are therefore better treated as one consideration in topic selection rather than as the objective that drives the study.

03 · What You Need to Know

What Actually Makes a Research Topic Publishable?

A publishable topic is not the same as a fashionable topic

Researchers sometimes use publishable as shorthand for topics that are currently popular, likely to attract attention, or commonly featured in prominent journals. Those characteristics may affect editorial interest in some contexts, but they are not a reliable definition of publishability.

A fashionable subject can still produce an unconvincing manuscript if the question adds little to an already crowded literature. Conversely, a less fashionable topic may support a valuable publication when it addresses a meaningful unresolved problem, provides strong evidence, or contributes knowledge needed by a particular research community.

This is why deciding whether to pursue a currently trending topic requires more than asking whether journals appear interested in it. Visibility and scholarly contribution are related only imperfectly.

Topics are not usually publishable or unpublishable by themselves

A broad topic such as artificial intelligence in education, antimicrobial resistance, climate adaptation, or employee well-being does not have an intrinsic publication probability. What eventually gets submitted to a journal is a study built around a specific problem and question, conducted using a particular design, and interpreted in relation to existing knowledge.

Two researchers can therefore begin with essentially the same topic and produce studies with very different publication prospects. One may repeat a well-established association in another convenient sample without explaining why the replication matters. The other may identify an unresolved question, choose a design capable of answering it, and explain what the resulting evidence contributes.

Before judging the publication potential of a topic, it helps to distinguish the broad subject from the research problem and the specific question that will actually structure the study.

Publication fit is partly about the audience

A useful question to ask early is not simply, “Can I publish this?” but “Who would need or value the answer?” If you can identify a scholarly community for whom the question matters, you can then examine journals serving that community and determine whether studies of this type fall within their scope.

This does not mean designing a project merely to satisfy one journal. Journals can change editors, priorities, article types, and policies before your study is finished. A manuscript can also be rejected by an appropriate journal for reasons that do not imply that the underlying research lacks value.

A more durable strategy is to establish a plausible publication pathway: there should be identifiable scholarly audiences and potentially suitable publication venues, without making the entire project dependent on acceptance by one particular journal.

Novelty matters, but novelty alone is not enough

Journals differ considerably in what they expect from submitted work. Some place substantial emphasis on conceptual novelty, others on methodological rigor, practical importance, replication, disciplinary relevance, or a particular type of evidence. Consequently, there is no universal threshold at which a topic becomes sufficiently novel to publish.

A study also does not become worthwhile simply because nobody appears to have conducted exactly the same study before. An understudied topic still needs a defensible reason to be studied. “Nobody has done this” identifies an absence in the literature; it does not by itself establish the significance of filling that absence.

A crowded topic can still produce publishable research

Heavy publication activity may initially look encouraging because it demonstrates an active scholarly audience. Yet it can also raise the threshold for contribution. If hundreds of studies already address essentially the same question using similar methods, another nearly identical study may be difficult to justify unless the context, population, theory, method, replication purpose, or evidence genuinely adds something useful.

For that reason, you should not automatically reject an area simply because the literature already appears crowded. The relevant issue is whether there remains a meaningful question that your study can answer.

Do not confuse “easy to publish” with “likely to produce exciting results”

This distinction is particularly important. There is substantial evidence that null or negative findings have historically been underrepresented in parts of the scientific literature. Publication bias can arise through decisions made at several stages, including researchers' decisions about what to submit and editorial decisions about what to publish. Its extent also varies across disciplines and study types.

Choosing questions because you expect statistically significant, positive, dramatic, or otherwise attractive findings can reinforce this problem. More importantly, it can subtly change the purpose of research from finding out what the evidence shows to producing a result that looks publishable.

Watch Out

If a topic seems attractive mainly because you expect it to produce a particular result, reconsider the reasoning behind your choice. A defensible study should remain worth conducting even if the findings contradict your expectations, reveal little or no effect, or turn out to be less dramatic than anticipated.

Some publishing models deliberately separate publication from the eventual result

Registered Reports illustrate why the distinction between a good study and an attractive result matters. In this publication format, participating journals evaluate the research question and proposed methods before the main results are known. Studies that receive in-principle acceptance can subsequently be published when the approved protocol is followed and the conclusions are justified, regardless of whether the results are statistically significant or support the original hypothesis.

The model is not available or appropriate for every project, but its underlying logic is instructive: the intellectual value of a study can be judged from the importance of the question and the rigor of the method rather than from whether the eventual findings happen to be exciting.

Publication prospects are still a legitimate practical consideration

None of this means that researchers should ignore publication entirely when choosing a topic. If publication is an explicit requirement of your degree, fellowship, employment, or project, considering the dissemination pathway before committing substantial time and resources can be prudent.

You might ask whether appropriate journals publish your type of research, whether your intended contribution is recognizable within the field, and whether the project can produce a coherent manuscript. These questions can expose problems while the project is still adaptable.

Publication potential therefore belongs alongside other considerations such as intellectual value, feasibility, ethics, access to evidence, available expertise, and your longer-term research direction. It should inform topic selection without becoming its sole organizing principle.

04 · A Practical Example

When the More Publishable-Looking Topic Is Not Automatically the Better Choice

Hypothetical Example

Choosing between a fashionable topic and a locally important problem

Suppose a doctoral student is deciding between two possible studies. Topic A examines a highly visible emerging technology that has generated a large number of recent publications. The student assumes that journals will be interested because the topic is popular. Topic B examines a persistent problem in the student's professional setting that receives much less attention internationally but affects practice and has several unresolved questions.

Initial judgment Topic A appears easier to publish because the student frequently encounters articles about it.
Literature check A closer review shows that many studies already ask essentially the question proposed for Topic A. The student struggles to explain what another similar study would add.
Contribution check For Topic B, the literature is smaller, but the student identifies a clear unresolved problem and can explain why answering it would matter to a specific research and professional community.
Publication check The student identifies several journals whose scope includes the type of problem, population, and methodology proposed for Topic B.
Decision Topic B may offer the stronger research project even though Topic A initially looked more publication-friendly.

The important comparison is not “popular topic versus unpopular topic.” It is whether each proposed study can support a meaningful question, rigorous investigation, identifiable contribution, and plausible route to an appropriate scholarly audience.

Common Mistakes When Choosing a Topic With Publication in Mind

Misconception

If many papers are being published on a topic, mine should be easy to publish too

High publication volume demonstrates interest, but it also means that your study enters an active literature in which many obvious questions may already have been addressed. The relevant question is not how many papers exist but what your proposed study would contribute that readers still need.

Misconception

A very unusual topic will be easier to publish because it is novel

Unusual does not automatically mean important. A topic may have received little attention because it has been overlooked, but it may also be poorly defined, difficult to investigate, or of limited relevance to the intended audience. Novelty becomes useful when it is connected to a consequential question.

Misconception

I should choose a topic that is likely to produce significant results

A research question should not depend for its value on obtaining the result you prefer. Well-designed studies with null, negative, contradictory, or unexpected findings can provide useful evidence. Selecting topics primarily because they appear likely to generate positive findings risks orienting the research toward a desired outcome rather than an informative question.

Misconception

If I target a particular journal from the beginning, publication is much more predictable

Knowing the likely audience and examining suitable journals can improve strategic planning, but no journal can be treated as a guaranteed destination. Editorial priorities, competition, reviewer judgments, and journal policies can all affect publication. Build a study that could matter to a scholarly audience rather than one whose value depends on a single outlet accepting it.

Misconception

The safest strategy is to avoid competitive topics

Competition can make it harder to establish a distinctive contribution, but an active field can also provide a substantial literature, clear unresolved debates, established methods, and an identifiable readership. Whether you should avoid a highly competitive research area depends on what you can contribute and whether you can execute the study well.

06 · What This Means for You

How Much Weight Should You Give Publication Potential?

Treat publication potential as a screening consideration rather than the foundation of topic selection. First ask whether the research problem deserves investigation and whether you can formulate a worthwhile question. Then consider whether you can investigate it rigorously and feasibly. Publication planning becomes most useful after those foundations are reasonably strong.

A simple decision framework

If a topic looks easy to publish mainly because it is fashionable
Check whether your specific question makes a recognizable contribution rather than assuming that popularity creates publishability.
If a worthwhile topic has an identifiable scholarly audience but fewer obvious publication venues
Investigate appropriate journals and publication formats before abandoning the topic.
If the study seems valuable only when it produces the result you expect
Reconsider the question. Ask whether every plausible outcome would still provide interpretable and useful evidence.
If publication is formally required for your degree or position
Include publication feasibility explicitly in your planning, while retaining scientific value, methodological rigor, and ethics as constraints that publication strategy cannot override.
If two topics are similarly worthwhile and feasible
A clearer publication pathway can reasonably become one factor that distinguishes between them.

You should also consider the relationship between publication and completion. A topic that appears publication-friendly may still require inaccessible participants, expensive data, specialized methods, or an unrealistic timeline. Conversely, choosing a project solely because it is easy to complete creates a different problem. A manageable study still needs a question worth answering.

If you are considering several possibilities, begin by narrowing your broad interests into viable research topics, then evaluate each candidate across scholarly value, feasibility, methodological fit, ethics, available support, and dissemination potential. Publication becomes part of the decision rather than the reason for the decision.

Before Choosing a Topic for Its Publication Potential, Check These

Before committing to the topic, check:
Can I explain why the research question matters without mentioning publication, journal rankings, or career benefits?
Does the existing literature leave a meaningful problem, uncertainty, contradiction, replication need, or other defensible reason for this study?
Would the study still be informative if the results were null, negative, unexpected, or contrary to my hypothesis?
Can I identify the researchers, practitioners, policymakers, or other scholarly audience who could use the findings?
Do several plausible journals or publication venues serve that audience rather than only one desired journal?
Have I checked the current aims, scope, article types, and author guidance of possible journals directly on their official websites?
Can the question be answered rigorously with the data, methods, expertise, time, and resources realistically available to me?
Am I choosing the topic because it can produce useful knowledge, rather than because I expect a particular result to be easier to publish?

Questions Researchers Ask About Choosing a Publishable Topic

Is it wrong to think about publication before starting my research?

No. Thinking about your eventual audience and possible publication venues can be useful, particularly when publication is an academic or professional requirement. The problem is allowing anticipated publication success to override the quality, importance, feasibility, or integrity of the research question.

Should I check journals before finalizing my research topic?

It can be useful to examine several relevant journals to understand what kinds of questions, methods, and article types are published in your field. Treat this as evidence about your potential audience and dissemination options, not as a guarantee that a particular journal will accept the eventual manuscript.

Are trending topics easier to publish?

Not necessarily. A trending topic may attract editorial and reader interest, but it may also become crowded quickly. Publication still depends on what your particular study contributes, how rigorously it is conducted, and whether it fits the intended journal and audience.

Should I avoid a topic if there are already many published studies about it?

No. A substantial literature can indicate an active and important field. Examine whether a meaningful unanswered question remains and whether your study offers a justified contribution rather than treating the number of existing publications as the deciding factor.

Are null or negative findings publishable?

They can be. Their value depends heavily on whether the research question is meaningful and the study is designed and conducted rigorously enough for the findings to be interpreted. Publication bias against null and negative results remains a documented concern in parts of the scientific literature, but a result that does not support the original hypothesis is not automatically a failed study.

What if I need a publication to graduate?

Then publication feasibility deserves explicit consideration when you select and design the project. Look for a worthwhile but manageable question, identify plausible audiences and journals early, and confirm any institutional publication requirements. The requirement to publish does not remove the need for rigorous, ethical, and genuinely informative research.

Should I choose the topic my supervisor thinks is more publishable?

Your supervisor's knowledge of the field and publication environment may provide valuable information, but the reasoning behind the recommendation matters. Discuss the expected contribution, feasibility, available expertise, likely audience, and alternatives rather than treating predicted publication success as sufficient justification for the topic.

Choose a Question Worth Answering, Then Plan How Its Answer Can Be Published

The Bottom Line

You can reasonably consider publication prospects when choosing a research topic, but “easy to publish” should rarely be the main reason you choose it.

A stronger approach is to identify a meaningful and feasible research question, determine whether you can investigate it rigorously, and then establish a realistic path for communicating the resulting evidence to an appropriate audience. Good publication planning supports good research; it should not decide in advance what research is worth doing or what result you hope to find.
