Does Research Always Begin With Something Going Wrong?
The word problem creates an easy misconception. In everyday language, a problem is usually something undesirable: a system is failing, people are being harmed, a process is inefficient, or an outcome needs to be improved. That can make researchers feel that every study needs to begin with something visibly wrong and end by proposing a way to fix it.
Many research problems do involve real-world difficulties. But research also begins because something important is not adequately understood, existing studies disagree, a theory cannot explain an observation well, a method limits what researchers can conclude, or an important question remains unanswered.
In those cases, nothing necessarily needs to be “fixed” in the ordinary sense. What needs attention is the limitation in our current knowledge or evidence.

What “Problem” Actually Means in a Research Context
Everyday Problems and Research Problems Are Not the Same Thing
Suppose a hospital has unusually long waiting times. A school has declining attendance. A manufacturing process produces too many defective products. A community experiences recurring floods. These are recognizable practical problems because there is a discrepancy between what is happening and what people would prefer to happen.
Each could motivate research. But the practical difficulty and the research problem are not necessarily identical.
For example, “patients are waiting too long” describes an undesirable situation. Research might instead investigate which processes contribute most to waiting time, how patients experience delays, why waiting times vary among otherwise comparable units, or whether a particular intervention reduces delays without creating other problems.
The practical problem tells you that something may need attention. The research problem identifies what needs to be investigated.
Practical problem
A condition in the world that someone wants to change, improve, prevent, or manage.
Research problem
A specific issue, uncertainty, contradiction, limitation, or knowledge need that provides a reason for systematic investigation.
The “Problem” May Be That We Do Not Understand Something Well Enough
Imagine researchers observe that two groups respond differently to the same intervention, but the reason for the difference is not adequately understood. The different responses are not necessarily wrong. The research problem may simply be that current knowledge cannot adequately explain them.
This kind of problem is common across disciplines. Researchers investigate how natural processes work, why people behave differently under particular conditions, how concepts relate to one another, how historical events unfolded, or why a phenomenon varies across settings.
None of those inquiries requires the phenomenon itself to be defective. The limitation may lie in what researchers currently know about it. A consequential lack of understanding can therefore become a legitimate research problem.
The Problem May Be Conflicting Evidence
Sometimes researchers have plenty of evidence, but the evidence does not point in one clear direction. Several studies may report one relationship while others report a different relationship or no relationship at all.
The research problem then is not simply that more information is needed. It may be that the existing evidence cannot yet support a confident conclusion.
That can lead to questions about differences in populations, measurements, contexts, research designs, analytical choices, or underlying mechanisms. Before treating disagreement as a genuine contradiction, however, you need to examine whether the studies were actually investigating sufficiently comparable things. When meaningful inconsistency remains, conflicting evidence can itself provide the basis for a research problem.
The Problem May Be an Explanation That Falls Short
Research can also begin when an established theory or explanation works reasonably well in some circumstances but fails to account for important observations elsewhere.
That does not necessarily mean the theory is “wrong.” The explanation might be incomplete, apply only under certain conditions, depend on assumptions that do not always hold, or require refinement.
A study might therefore investigate where the explanation works, where it does not, what conditions affect its applicability, or whether an alternative explanation accounts for the evidence more convincingly. In such cases, the research problem lies in the limitations of an existing explanation, not necessarily in a defective real-world condition.
The Problem May Be in How We Produce Knowledge
Research methods themselves can create research problems. Perhaps an established measure captures only part of a complex construct. A sampling approach may systematically exclude an important population. An instrument may perform differently across contexts. Existing study designs may make it difficult to distinguish between competing explanations.
Again, the relevant problem is not necessarily something wrong with the phenomenon being studied. It may be a limitation in researchers' ability to observe, measure, estimate, interpret, or draw conclusions about it.
A methodological limitation does not automatically justify another study. The weakness must be consequential enough to affect the evidence or conclusions that matter. But when it is, a methodological weakness in previous research can become a research problem.
Some Research Problems Really Are About Things That Need Improvement
None of this means practical problems are somehow less scholarly. Research routinely addresses disease, educational inequity, environmental degradation, engineering failures, inefficient systems, unsafe practices, ineffective interventions, and other conditions people have good reasons to change.
Practical and theoretical contributions are not mutually exclusive either. Research prompted by a real-world problem may generate new conceptual understanding, while theoretically motivated research may eventually inform practice.
The important point is that a study does not become worthwhile merely because the practical condition is serious. You still need to identify what research can contribute. A practical problem can warrant study even without a major theoretical gap, but the proposed investigation still needs a clear purpose and a defensible contribution.
Do Not Force Every Research Problem Into a “Problem-Solution” Structure
When researchers assume every problem needs fixing, they may prematurely design their study around a solution. A researcher notices low participation in a program and immediately asks which intervention will increase participation. Another observes a difference between two groups and assumes the goal must be to eliminate the difference.
That reasoning can skip an essential question: do we understand what is happening well enough to know what, if anything, should be changed?
Sometimes descriptive, exploratory, explanatory, interpretive, or theory-building research is needed before an intervention can be sensibly evaluated. Sometimes the phenomenon is not undesirable at all. And sometimes the evidence ultimately shows that the researcher's initial assumption about what was “wrong” was mistaken.
Watch Out
Do not build a solution into the research problem before establishing what the problem actually is. Doing so can bias the framing of the study toward a preferred intervention and obscure alternative explanations for the phenomenon you are trying to understand.
A Useful Test Is to Ask What Kind of Deficiency You Are Claiming
If the word problem is making your reasoning difficult, replace it temporarily with a more precise description. Ask what is currently inadequate.

This distinction helps you describe the problem more accurately. Instead of trying to make every study sound like an attempt to repair the world, you can state precisely what limitation in knowledge, evidence, explanation, method, or practice gives the research its purpose.
The Problem Still Has to Matter
Broadening the meaning of research problem does not mean that every unanswered question qualifies. There are effectively unlimited things we do not know. Research time, participants, funding, laboratory capacity, data, and scholarly attention are limited.
The relevant question is therefore not simply whether something remains unknown. You also need to establish why reducing that uncertainty would be worthwhile.
That significance might come from advancing an important theoretical debate, improving how a phenomenon is measured, resolving evidence that affects decisions, clarifying a process that researchers currently misunderstand, or contributing knowledge relevant to a practical problem.
A research problem does not have to describe something wrong, but it does need a defensible reason for investigation.

Why Do People Interpret the Same Visualization Differently?
Imagine researchers studying how people interpret uncertainty in scientific data visualizations. Previous studies show that different visualization formats can influence interpretation, but researchers do not yet adequately understand why people with similar backgrounds sometimes draw different conclusions from the same representation.

What is “wrong”? Nothing necessarily. Variation in interpretation is not automatically a defect that must be eliminated.
What is the research problem? The mechanisms or reasoning processes contributing to that variation are insufficiently understood.
Why might that matter? Better understanding could contribute to theories of information interpretation and potentially inform how scientific uncertainty is communicated.
What might the research investigate? A study could examine how particular characteristics of the visualization, task, prior knowledge, or reasoning process relate to differences in interpretation.
The study does not need to begin by declaring that different interpretations are bad or that researchers must make everyone interpret the visualization identically. Its contribution may simply be to explain a phenomenon that current knowledge does not adequately account for.
