When Missing Understanding Becomes a Defensible Research Problem
The Problem Can Be in Our Knowledge Rather Than in the World
The word problem often suggests an undesirable condition that needs correction. But research problems are broader than practical problems.
Researchers may observe a phenomenon without adequately understanding how it happens, why it happens, how people experience it, which mechanisms produce it, how its components relate, or under what conditions it changes. Nothing about the phenomenon itself necessarily has to be defective.
For example, researchers might know that a particular behavioral pattern occurs but lack an adequate explanation for why individuals vary in that behavior. They might know that an ecological process changes across environments without understanding which mechanisms account for the variation. They might document how people use a technology without understanding how users make particular decisions while using it.
In each case, the limitation lies in what can currently be explained or understood. This is one reason a research problem does not have to describe something “wrong” that needs fixing.
Your Lack of Understanding Is Not Automatically a Research Problem
This distinction is fundamental. You can be unfamiliar with something that an entire research field already understands well.
Suppose you read a few papers about a phenomenon and cannot find an explanation for it. That tells you something about your current search and knowledge. It does not yet demonstrate that the scholarly literature lacks an explanation.
The relevant question is not:
“Do I understand this?”
It is:
“Does the relevant body of evidence provide an adequate understanding of this?”
Answering the second question normally requires a sufficiently broad and critical review of the relevant literature. You may need to search different terminology, neighboring disciplines, older foundational work, recent reviews, and studies using different methodological approaches before concluding that a meaningful knowledge limitation exists.
Personal knowledge gap
You do not currently know or understand something. Further reading may resolve the uncertainty without any new research.
Research knowledge gap
The relevant evidence does not yet provide an adequate answer or understanding, creating a potential reason for new investigation.
“Little Is Known” Is Usually Too Vague
A common problem statement begins with some version of “little is known about X.” Sometimes that claim is justified. But as a research problem, it is usually incomplete.
What exactly is not known?
Do researchers lack a description of the phenomenon? Is its cause uncertain? Is a mechanism poorly understood? Do we not know how participants experience it? Are the conditions under which it occurs unclear? Do existing studies establish an association without explaining the process behind it?
The more precisely you identify the missing understanding, the more useful the problem becomes for designing a study.
Compare these two statements:
“Little is known about remote workers.”
“Existing studies describe differences in collaboration among remote teams, but the processes through which newly formed teams establish informal knowledge-sharing practices without regular face-to-face interaction remain insufficiently understood.”
The second statement identifies a much more specific limitation. It gives the researcher something that could plausibly be investigated rather than simply pointing toward a broad area where more information might be collected.
An Unknown Is Not Automatically an Important Unknown
There are effectively unlimited unanswered questions. No research literature can investigate every population, combination of variables, location, time period, mechanism, or conceivable phenomenon.
That means novelty alone cannot establish significance.
Imagine discovering that nobody appears to have studied whether the color of researchers' notebook covers affects how many pages they write during fieldwork. Unless there is a defensible reason to expect that relationship to matter, the absence of research does not create a compelling problem.
Now imagine that an important clinical decision depends on a biological mechanism that remains poorly understood. Or that policymakers rely on an assumption about behavior for which the underlying process is uncertain. In those cases, reducing the uncertainty may have meaningful consequences.
The question is therefore not simply “What don't we know?” but “Which missing understanding matters enough that reducing it would make a useful contribution?”
Ask What Better Understanding Would Allow Us to Do or Explain
A strong knowledge-based problem connects the missing understanding to a consequence.
Better understanding might:
- allow researchers to distinguish between competing explanations;
- clarify a mechanism underlying an observed relationship;
- improve predictions about when a phenomenon will occur;
- show why findings vary among populations or contexts;
- improve the conceptualization or measurement of a phenomenon;
- provide evidence needed before an intervention can sensibly be designed;
- help practitioners or policymakers make decisions under less uncertainty; or
- open a productive direction for subsequent research.
You do not need to claim that your study will transform the field. But you should be able to explain why the particular uncertainty is consequential. That is part of determining whether a proposed research problem is important enough to investigate.
Different Kinds of Missing Understanding Lead to Different Studies
“We do not understand this” can conceal several fundamentally different knowledge problems. Identifying which one you have matters because each points toward different research questions and evidence.

These categories can overlap, and terminology varies among disciplines. Their value is diagnostic: they force you to specify what kind of understanding is actually missing instead of using “knowledge gap” as a generic justification.
Sometimes the Problem Is Not Missing Evidence but Confusing Evidence
Before concluding that researchers lack understanding because there is too little research, look carefully at what already exists. You may discover a different problem.
Perhaps many studies have investigated the question, but their findings disagree. Perhaps an established explanation works under some conditions and fails under others. Perhaps researchers have collected substantial data but existing methods make interpretation difficult.
Those are not simply empty gaps. They represent different limitations in the state of knowledge and should be described accurately.
If substantial evidence exists but points in different directions, the more precise problem may concern conflicting evidence rather than a simple lack of knowledge. If the evidence consistently reveals observations that an established account cannot explain, the problem may instead be an inadequate explanation.
Evidence Must Support the Claim That Understanding Is Actually Limited
Claims about missing knowledge require evidence just as claims about real-world problems do.
Relevant evidence might include recent reviews that identify unresolved questions, primary studies that consistently acknowledge the same limitation, contradictory findings that prevent confident interpretation, or a literature search showing that a consequential mechanism or population has received inadequate investigation.
However, researcher statements about “future research” should be interpreted critically. Authors routinely recommend additional studies, and those recommendations do not automatically prove that an important research problem exists. Later work may already have addressed the issue, or the proposed gap may be relatively minor.
Your job is to synthesize the evidence rather than merely repeat another author's call for more research. How extensive that evidence needs to be depends on the nature of your claim, discipline, and project, so it is useful to consider separately how much evidence you need to establish that a research problem actually exists.
The Missing Understanding Must Be Researchable
Some things may be genuinely unknown but difficult or impossible to investigate with available methods, evidence, access, or ethical constraints.
For example, “Why does every individual make every decision they make?” describes an enormous domain of missing understanding, not a workable research problem. A researcher would need to identify a particular decision, population, context, process, or explanatory mechanism that can be investigated systematically.
Researchability therefore helps transform a general limitation in understanding into a useful problem. You need enough specificity to determine what evidence could reduce the uncertainty and what kind of study could realistically obtain that evidence.

Turning “We Don't Understand Why” Into a Research Problem
Hypothetical Example
Why Do Some Students Stop Using an Optional Learning Tool?
Imagine that an online university course provides students with an optional study-planning tool. Usage records show that many students try the tool early in the semester, but some stop using it after several weeks. The decline is observable, but the available evidence does not adequately explain why students discontinue use.
Initial observation Some students begin using the study-planning tool and later stop.
What is already known? Existing research identifies several factors that can affect adoption of educational technologies, but it does not adequately explain discontinuation of this type of tool in the researcher's defined context.
What is not understood? The processes and considerations influencing students' decisions to discontinue use remain unclear.
Why might that matter? Understanding those decisions could improve knowledge about sustained technology use and help educators distinguish between barriers to continued use and rational decisions by students who no longer find the tool useful.
What is the research problem? There is insufficient understanding of the factors and decision processes associated with discontinuation of the optional study-planning tool among the defined student population.
Notice what the problem does not claim. It does not assume that discontinuation is bad. It does not assume that students should use the tool more. It does not assume that the tool needs redesigning. Those conclusions would require evidence.
The research problem is the consequential uncertainty about why the observed behavior occurs. The study can investigate that uncertainty without deciding in advance what the explanation should be.
