Exploratory research can be theory-driven. Theory may focus attention, provide sensitizing concepts, or help researchers interpret emerging findings, provided it does not turn an open inquiry into a disguised attempt to confirm predetermined categories.

01 · The Question

Does Using Theory Stop a Study From Being Exploratory?

Exploratory research is often described as open-ended. Theory, by contrast, can sound predetermined: it identifies concepts, proposes relationships, and tells researchers what may matter.

That creates an apparent contradiction.

If you begin an exploratory study with a theoretical framework, are you still exploring? Or have you already decided what you expect to find?

The answer depends on what the theory is doing.

An exploratory study can use theory to orient attention, identify sensitizing concepts, frame broad questions, inform sampling, or help researchers interpret emerging patterns. The problem arises when the framework determines in advance which observations count, which categories must appear, and how every finding will be interpreted. At that point, the study may be much less exploratory than its label suggests.

Yes, Exploration and Theory Are Not Opposites

In Brief

Yes. Exploratory research can be theory-driven or theory-informed when theory helps orient the inquiry while researchers remain genuinely open to concepts, relationships, mechanisms, and explanations that the framework does not anticipate.

Exploratory research becomes theoretically constrained when an existing framework predetermines what researchers will ask, code, observe, and conclude while contradictory or emergent evidence is excluded. The relevant distinction is not simply theory versus no theory, but how strongly theory structures the inquiry and whether the research can still discover something outside it.

03 · What You Need to Know

Theory Can Guide Exploration Without Dictating Its Destination

Exploratory does not mean intellectually blank

Researchers do not enter a study without prior knowledge.

You know something about the topic, have read literature, use concepts inherited from your discipline, make methodological assumptions, and decide that some observations are more relevant than others. Even deciding what phenomenon deserves exploration already reflects a conceptual understanding of the problem.

This is one reason simplistic descriptions of exploratory research as completely “theory-free” are difficult to defend.

Methodological discussions of qualitative theory building have questioned the idea that researchers can move straightforwardly from raw observations to general theoretical explanations through pure induction. Bendassolli, for example, highlights the philosophical difficulties involved in moving from singular empirical observations toward general theoretical statements.

Exploration can therefore acknowledge prior theory without allowing it to determine every outcome.

Theory-driven and theory-testing are not the same thing

A study can be informed by theory without being designed to test that theory.

Suppose researchers use an established theory to identify broad domains worth discussing during interviews. They remain open to participants introducing experiences that fall outside those domains, modify later interviews in response to emerging findings, and do not evaluate the study according to whether the theory's propositions are supported.

Theory is guiding the inquiry, but the theory itself is not necessarily being placed under a formal test.

By contrast, a study that derives specific predictions from a theory and gathers evidence primarily to evaluate those predictions is more clearly theory-testing.

The distinction between applying, testing, extending, and building theory helps clarify what “theory-driven” actually means.

Theory can provide sensitizing concepts

One useful way to employ theory in exploratory inquiry is through sensitizing concepts.

A sensitizing concept directs attention without providing a rigid checklist of what must be found. It gives researchers a way of noticing potentially relevant features while remaining open to how those features actually appear in the empirical setting.

For example, a researcher studying students' experiences of generative AI might enter interviews sensitized to concepts such as agency, trust, authorship, or self-regulation. Those ideas can inform prompts and interpretation without requiring every participant's experience to be coded into those categories.

The distinction is subtle but important. A sensitizing concept says, in effect, “this may be worth noticing.” A predetermined coding requirement says, “this is what the data must contain.”

Theory can help formulate broad exploratory questions

Theory can reveal where knowledge is incomplete.

An established theory may explain a phenomenon well in one setting but provide little guidance about what happens under substantially different conditions. Researchers can use that theoretical uncertainty to formulate an exploratory question.

For example, rather than predicting how professional identity will affect educators' use of generative AI, researchers might ask how professional identity enters educators' reasoning about acceptable AI use.

The theory provides conceptual orientation, but the question leaves the form, direction, and importance of that relationship open to investigation.

Theory can guide sampling

Theoretical ideas can also help researchers decide where variation is likely to be informative.

If existing scholarship suggests that institutional autonomy may shape professional decision-making, an exploratory study could intentionally include participants from institutions with substantially different governance arrangements. The theory helps identify potentially revealing contrasts.

This does not require assuming beforehand what those contrasts will show.

Similarly, theoretical sampling in grounded theory traditions involves selecting additional cases, participants, situations, or data sources in response to developing conceptual categories. Sampling evolves as the emerging explanation develops rather than being fixed solely by a preexisting theory.

Theory can inform data collection without scripting the answers

An interview guide can contain theoretically informed questions while preserving space for discovery.

Suppose theory suggests that perceived risk may matter. Asking participants, “What concerns, if any, influence how you use generative AI?” leaves considerably more room for unexpected meanings than asking a sequence of questions designed solely to confirm predetermined dimensions of perceived risk.

The first uses theory to sensitize inquiry. The second may operationalize a construct for focused investigation.

Neither approach is inherently superior. They simply serve different research purposes.

Theory can enter after initial exploration

Theory does not have to play the same role throughout a study.

Researchers may begin with relatively open data collection, identify recurring patterns, and then engage more deeply with theoretical literature to interpret those patterns. Existing theory may help explain some observations while failing to account for others.

This later theoretical engagement can generate a productive dialogue between evidence and explanation.

Qualitative methodological literature describes theory building as involving more than mechanical induction. Abductive reasoning can connect surprising empirical observations with possible explanations drawn from or developed against existing theoretical knowledge.

This approach can preserve exploratory openness while avoiding the fiction that interpretation occurs without theoretical resources.

Exploration can begin from a theoretical puzzle

Sometimes the reason for exploring a phenomenon is itself theoretical.

An established theory predicts a relationship in ordinary circumstances, but little is known about how the underlying process operates in an unusual environment. Rather than imposing a specific hypothesis, researchers may conduct exploratory work to understand what mechanisms are active in that setting.

In this case, theory generates the puzzle without predetermining the answer.

Exploratory research can therefore be theoretically motivated even when it is not confirmatory.

Theory can become a comparison point rather than a coding template

Another strategy is to develop empirical categories first and compare them with theory afterward.

Imagine that researchers identify five recurring ways students describe authorship when using generative AI. They can then ask whether an existing theory of authorship or agency explains those patterns, where it aligns, and where the empirical categories exceed its conceptual vocabulary.

This creates a dialogue between emergent findings and prior theory.

It also makes disagreement theoretically useful. The data do not need to resemble the framework for the framework to contribute.

A rigid framework can create theoretical tunnel vision

The main danger is premature closure.

Once researchers commit strongly to a theory, they may notice what the theory teaches them to notice and overlook observations that do not fit. Interview questions can become too narrow. Coding schemes can turn theoretical constructs into compulsory categories. Negative cases may be treated as noise rather than potential evidence that the framework is incomplete.

Watch Out

If participants can say something important about the phenomenon but your analytical procedure gives you nowhere to put it because it does not match the framework, the theory may be constraining exploration rather than supporting it.

Theory-driven exploration requires openness to theoretical failure

A genuinely exploratory study should permit the possibility that the selected theory is not particularly useful.

Perhaps participants rarely invoke the concepts that appeared central in prior scholarship. Perhaps an unanticipated process dominates the phenomenon. Perhaps the theoretical categories collapse distinctions that matter greatly in the empirical setting.

Those outcomes should not be treated as methodological failures.

They may indicate that the theory has limited explanatory reach in this context, that another theoretical perspective is needed, or that the phenomenon contains elements not adequately theorized.

In that sense, exploratory research can sometimes lead naturally toward challenging an existing theory or identifying opportunities for extension.

Induction, deduction, and abduction can coexist

Research is often classified too neatly as deductive or inductive.

Deduction begins from general propositions and derives implications for particular observations. Induction develops more general patterns from observations. Abduction seeks plausible explanations for observations, particularly surprising ones.

Exploratory research can involve all three at different moments.

You might enter with theoretically informed expectations, observe something unexpected, develop a possible explanation, return to the literature, collect additional evidence, and revise the explanation again. Contemporary discussions of qualitative theorizing increasingly emphasize this iterative movement rather than treating theory development as a one-way climb from data to theory.

Exploratory research can be strongly or lightly theory-informed

Theoretical engagement exists on a continuum rather than as a yes-or-no condition.

Role of theory What it might look like Implication for exploration

Confirmatory test Specific theoretical predictions are specified and evidence is gathered to evaluate them. The principal purpose is theory testing rather than exploration.

These boundaries are not absolute. Their purpose is to help researchers describe the role of theory more accurately.

Your methodology matters

Different qualitative and mixed-methods traditions make different assumptions about prior theory.

Some approaches explicitly employ theoretical lenses from the outset. Others emphasize bracketing, inductive analysis, theoretical sampling, or progressive conceptual development. Even within grounded theory, traditions differ in their treatment of prior literature and theoretical sensitivity.

This is why asking whether qualitative research needs a theoretical framework cannot be answered independently of methodology.

Theoretical openness should be designed in a way that is coherent with the research tradition you actually claim to use.

Exploratory is not an excuse for theoretical vagueness

Researchers sometimes use the word “exploratory” to avoid explaining why particular concepts, questions, participants, or analytical choices were selected.

Exploration still requires methodological reasoning.

If theory informed the interview guide, say so. If you deliberately avoided a predetermined framework, explain why. If theoretical concepts entered only after initial coding, describe that sequence. If you combined deductive and inductive coding, distinguish the categories derived from prior theory from those developed through engagement with the data.

Transparency about theory makes exploratory research stronger, not less exploratory.

04 · A Practical Example

What Theory-Driven Exploration Can Look Like

Hypothetical Example

Exploring how students decide whether AI assistance is acceptable

Researchers want to understand how university students distinguish acceptable from unacceptable uses of generative AI in academic work. Prior literature suggests that agency, authorship, assessment expectations, and perceived norms may be relevant, but the researchers do not know how students themselves combine these considerations.

Use theory for orientation Existing theoretical literature sensitizes the researchers to issues such as agency and social norms without turning them into mandatory analytical categories.
Ask open questions Participants are asked how they decide whether a particular form of AI assistance is acceptable and what influences that judgment, rather than being asked only about predetermined theoretical constructs.
Preserve unexpected findings Students repeatedly distinguish between AI replacing intellectual work and AI reducing mechanical effort, a distinction not adequately captured by the initial theoretical lens.
Return to theory Researchers compare the emergent distinction with existing explanations and investigate whether another theoretical perspective better accounts for it.
Refine the explanation The final interpretation incorporates useful concepts from the original framework while retaining empirically developed categories that extend beyond it.

The study was theory-informed from the beginning, but the theory did not determine what researchers were permitted to discover. That is the crucial difference.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Common Misunderstandings About Theory and Exploratory Research

Misconception

Exploratory research cannot use theory

Exploration and theory are not mutually exclusive. Theory can motivate the problem, provide sensitizing concepts, inform broad questions, guide sampling, or support interpretation while the study remains open to unexpected evidence.

Misconception

If theory informs the interview questions, the study becomes deductive

Theory-informed questions do not automatically make the entire study deductive. Researchers can ask theoretically sensitized questions while allowing new concepts and explanations to emerge. The overall reasoning process may combine deductive, inductive, and abductive elements.

Misconception

Exploratory research should avoid reading theory beforehand

Some methodologies recommend particular ways of managing prior literature, but researchers cannot realistically erase their conceptual knowledge. The more defensible question is how prior theory is used and how openness to unexpected findings is protected.

Misconception

Using a theoretical framework means all codes should come from the theory

That is one possible analytical strategy, but it substantially narrows exploration. Researchers can combine theoretically derived categories with inductively developed ones or use theory mainly during later interpretation, depending on the methodology and purpose.

Misconception

Anything unexpected automatically becomes a new theory

Unexpected findings can generate theoretical questions, but theory building requires conceptual development and explanatory reasoning. A novel theme or category is not automatically a theory.

Misconception

Calling a study exploratory means you do not need a theoretical rationale

Exploratory research still needs a clear problem, purpose, conceptual rationale, and methodological justification. “Exploratory” describes the openness or objective of inquiry; it does not exempt researchers from explaining why their choices make sense.

Decide How Much Influence Theory Should Have Before You Begin

A simple decision framework

If very little is known about the phenomenon
Use existing theory lightly enough that unfamiliar concepts, processes, and explanations remain visible.
If theory identifies useful concepts but its applicability is uncertain
Consider using those concepts sensitively rather than converting them immediately into fixed analytical categories.
If your purpose is to understand how an established theoretical process operates in an unfamiliar context
Theory can provide substantial orientation while the mechanisms and contextual conditions remain open to exploration.
If every question, code, and interpretation is predetermined by the framework
Reconsider whether “exploratory” accurately describes the study or whether it is better characterized as focused theory application or testing.
If unexpected evidence contradicts the theoretical lens
Preserve and investigate the discrepancy rather than forcing it into existing categories.

Before data collection, identify where theory is allowed to influence the study. Will it shape the broad research question? Sampling? Interview prompts? Initial codes? Interpretation? All of these?

Then identify where openness will be protected. Will participants be able to introduce concepts outside the framework? Can new codes be developed? Will negative cases be examined? Can the theory itself be reconsidered?

A theory-driven exploratory design becomes much easier to defend when those decisions are explicit.

07 · A Quick Checklist

Before Calling Your Study Theory-Driven and Exploratory

Check the role of theory:
State what makes the study exploratory: an unfamiliar phenomenon, uncertain mechanism, insufficient explanation, new context, or another genuine source of uncertainty.
Identify exactly where existing theory enters the research process.
Distinguish sensitizing concepts from categories that the analysis requires in advance.
Design data collection so participants or observations can introduce issues outside the theoretical framework.
Allow analytical categories to be revised or added when evidence does not fit the initial theoretical structure.
Retain negative cases, contradictions, and unexpected observations rather than treating them automatically as noise.
Explain whether reasoning is primarily inductive, deductive, abductive, or deliberately iterative rather than using these labels loosely.
Make sure your use of prior theory is compatible with the qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods methodology you claim to use.
Remain open to concluding that the initial theory is incomplete, inappropriate, or less useful than expected.

Questions About Theory in Exploratory Research

Can exploratory qualitative research have a theoretical framework?

Yes. A theoretical framework can orient an exploratory qualitative study, provided its role is consistent with the methodology and the analysis remains open to findings that the framework does not anticipate. The degree of theoretical structure should be explained explicitly.

Does using theory make exploratory research deductive?

Not automatically. A study may contain deductive elements while remaining exploratory overall. Researchers can move iteratively among theoretically informed expectations, empirical observations, inductively developed patterns, and abductive explanations.

Can I use both deductive and inductive coding?

Yes, when the methodology supports that strategy. You might begin with categories informed by theory while allowing additional categories to emerge from the data. Clearly distinguish how the two kinds of codes were developed and how conflicts or overlaps were handled.

What are sensitizing concepts?

Sensitizing concepts provide general directions for what researchers might notice rather than fixed definitions that determine exactly what must be observed. They can help orient exploratory inquiry while preserving room for empirical meanings and categories to develop.

Can grounded theory use existing theory?

Grounded theory traditions differ in how they approach prior literature and theoretical knowledge. Existing theory does not simply disappear, but researchers should follow the conventions of the grounded theory tradition they use and avoid forcing data into predetermined theoretical categories when the methodology requires theory to be developed through iterative analysis.

Can an exploratory study test a theory?

It can contain theory-relevant analyses, but if the principal objective is to evaluate specific theoretical predictions using a design established for that purpose, “theory-testing” may describe the study more accurately than broadly exploratory research. A project can also have distinct exploratory and confirmatory components.

Can exploratory research eventually build theory?

Yes. Exploration can reveal concepts, processes, mechanisms, and relationships that contribute to theoretical development. Theory building requires additional explanatory work, however; discovering patterns or themes is not by itself sufficient.

What if the data do not fit my theoretical framework?

Do not automatically force the data into the framework. Examine whether the discrepancy reflects a new concept, boundary condition, alternative explanation, methodological issue, or limitation of the theory. In exploratory research, such mismatches can be among the most informative findings.
