Theory Can Guide Exploration Without Dictating Its Destination
Exploratory does not mean intellectually blank
Researchers do not enter a study without prior knowledge.
You know something about the topic, have read literature, use concepts inherited from your discipline, make methodological assumptions, and decide that some observations are more relevant than others. Even deciding what phenomenon deserves exploration already reflects a conceptual understanding of the problem.
This is one reason simplistic descriptions of exploratory research as completely “theory-free” are difficult to defend.
Methodological discussions of qualitative theory building have questioned the idea that researchers can move straightforwardly from raw observations to general theoretical explanations through pure induction. Bendassolli, for example, highlights the philosophical difficulties involved in moving from singular empirical observations toward general theoretical statements.
Exploration can therefore acknowledge prior theory without allowing it to determine every outcome.
Theory-driven and theory-testing are not the same thing
A study can be informed by theory without being designed to test that theory.
Suppose researchers use an established theory to identify broad domains worth discussing during interviews. They remain open to participants introducing experiences that fall outside those domains, modify later interviews in response to emerging findings, and do not evaluate the study according to whether the theory's propositions are supported.
Theory is guiding the inquiry, but the theory itself is not necessarily being placed under a formal test.
By contrast, a study that derives specific predictions from a theory and gathers evidence primarily to evaluate those predictions is more clearly theory-testing.
The distinction between applying, testing, extending, and building theory helps clarify what “theory-driven” actually means.
Theory can provide sensitizing concepts
One useful way to employ theory in exploratory inquiry is through sensitizing concepts.
A sensitizing concept directs attention without providing a rigid checklist of what must be found. It gives researchers a way of noticing potentially relevant features while remaining open to how those features actually appear in the empirical setting.
For example, a researcher studying students' experiences of generative AI might enter interviews sensitized to concepts such as agency, trust, authorship, or self-regulation. Those ideas can inform prompts and interpretation without requiring every participant's experience to be coded into those categories.
The distinction is subtle but important. A sensitizing concept says, in effect, “this may be worth noticing.” A predetermined coding requirement says, “this is what the data must contain.”
Theory can help formulate broad exploratory questions
Theory can reveal where knowledge is incomplete.
An established theory may explain a phenomenon well in one setting but provide little guidance about what happens under substantially different conditions. Researchers can use that theoretical uncertainty to formulate an exploratory question.
For example, rather than predicting how professional identity will affect educators' use of generative AI, researchers might ask how professional identity enters educators' reasoning about acceptable AI use.
The theory provides conceptual orientation, but the question leaves the form, direction, and importance of that relationship open to investigation.
Theory can guide sampling
Theoretical ideas can also help researchers decide where variation is likely to be informative.
If existing scholarship suggests that institutional autonomy may shape professional decision-making, an exploratory study could intentionally include participants from institutions with substantially different governance arrangements. The theory helps identify potentially revealing contrasts.
This does not require assuming beforehand what those contrasts will show.
Similarly, theoretical sampling in grounded theory traditions involves selecting additional cases, participants, situations, or data sources in response to developing conceptual categories. Sampling evolves as the emerging explanation develops rather than being fixed solely by a preexisting theory.
Theory can inform data collection without scripting the answers
An interview guide can contain theoretically informed questions while preserving space for discovery.
Suppose theory suggests that perceived risk may matter. Asking participants, “What concerns, if any, influence how you use generative AI?” leaves considerably more room for unexpected meanings than asking a sequence of questions designed solely to confirm predetermined dimensions of perceived risk.
The first uses theory to sensitize inquiry. The second may operationalize a construct for focused investigation.
Neither approach is inherently superior. They simply serve different research purposes.
Theory can enter after initial exploration
Theory does not have to play the same role throughout a study.
Researchers may begin with relatively open data collection, identify recurring patterns, and then engage more deeply with theoretical literature to interpret those patterns. Existing theory may help explain some observations while failing to account for others.
This later theoretical engagement can generate a productive dialogue between evidence and explanation.
Qualitative methodological literature describes theory building as involving more than mechanical induction. Abductive reasoning can connect surprising empirical observations with possible explanations drawn from or developed against existing theoretical knowledge.
This approach can preserve exploratory openness while avoiding the fiction that interpretation occurs without theoretical resources.
Exploration can begin from a theoretical puzzle
Sometimes the reason for exploring a phenomenon is itself theoretical.
An established theory predicts a relationship in ordinary circumstances, but little is known about how the underlying process operates in an unusual environment. Rather than imposing a specific hypothesis, researchers may conduct exploratory work to understand what mechanisms are active in that setting.
In this case, theory generates the puzzle without predetermining the answer.
Exploratory research can therefore be theoretically motivated even when it is not confirmatory.
Theory can become a comparison point rather than a coding template
Another strategy is to develop empirical categories first and compare them with theory afterward.
Imagine that researchers identify five recurring ways students describe authorship when using generative AI. They can then ask whether an existing theory of authorship or agency explains those patterns, where it aligns, and where the empirical categories exceed its conceptual vocabulary.
This creates a dialogue between emergent findings and prior theory.
It also makes disagreement theoretically useful. The data do not need to resemble the framework for the framework to contribute.
A rigid framework can create theoretical tunnel vision
The main danger is premature closure.
Once researchers commit strongly to a theory, they may notice what the theory teaches them to notice and overlook observations that do not fit. Interview questions can become too narrow. Coding schemes can turn theoretical constructs into compulsory categories. Negative cases may be treated as noise rather than potential evidence that the framework is incomplete.
Watch Out
If participants can say something important about the phenomenon but your analytical procedure gives you nowhere to put it because it does not match the framework, the theory may be constraining exploration rather than supporting it.
Theory-driven exploration requires openness to theoretical failure
A genuinely exploratory study should permit the possibility that the selected theory is not particularly useful.
Perhaps participants rarely invoke the concepts that appeared central in prior scholarship. Perhaps an unanticipated process dominates the phenomenon. Perhaps the theoretical categories collapse distinctions that matter greatly in the empirical setting.
Those outcomes should not be treated as methodological failures.
They may indicate that the theory has limited explanatory reach in this context, that another theoretical perspective is needed, or that the phenomenon contains elements not adequately theorized.
In that sense, exploratory research can sometimes lead naturally toward challenging an existing theory or identifying opportunities for extension.
Induction, deduction, and abduction can coexist
Research is often classified too neatly as deductive or inductive.
Deduction begins from general propositions and derives implications for particular observations. Induction develops more general patterns from observations. Abduction seeks plausible explanations for observations, particularly surprising ones.
Exploratory research can involve all three at different moments.
You might enter with theoretically informed expectations, observe something unexpected, develop a possible explanation, return to the literature, collect additional evidence, and revise the explanation again. Contemporary discussions of qualitative theorizing increasingly emphasize this iterative movement rather than treating theory development as a one-way climb from data to theory.
Exploratory research can be strongly or lightly theory-informed
Theoretical engagement exists on a continuum rather than as a yes-or-no condition.

These boundaries are not absolute. Their purpose is to help researchers describe the role of theory more accurately.
Your methodology matters
Different qualitative and mixed-methods traditions make different assumptions about prior theory.
Some approaches explicitly employ theoretical lenses from the outset. Others emphasize bracketing, inductive analysis, theoretical sampling, or progressive conceptual development. Even within grounded theory, traditions differ in their treatment of prior literature and theoretical sensitivity.
This is why asking whether qualitative research needs a theoretical framework cannot be answered independently of methodology.
Theoretical openness should be designed in a way that is coherent with the research tradition you actually claim to use.
Exploratory is not an excuse for theoretical vagueness
Researchers sometimes use the word “exploratory” to avoid explaining why particular concepts, questions, participants, or analytical choices were selected.
Exploration still requires methodological reasoning.
If theory informed the interview guide, say so. If you deliberately avoided a predetermined framework, explain why. If theoretical concepts entered only after initial coding, describe that sequence. If you combined deductive and inductive coding, distinguish the categories derived from prior theory from those developed through engagement with the data.
Transparency about theory makes exploratory research stronger, not less exploratory.
