What Does It Mean to Test, Apply, Extend, or Build a Theory?

Testing, applying, extending, and building theory describe different relationships between research and theory. The distinction matters because using a theory does not necessarily mean testing it, and finding something new does not automatically mean you have built a theory.

01 · The Question

What Are You Actually Doing With the Theory?

Researchers often write that a study “uses” a theory. That statement tells the reader surprisingly little.

Are you using the theory as an established lens for understanding a practical or empirical problem? Are you putting one of its propositions under empirical scrutiny? Are you proposing that the theory needs another mechanism or boundary condition? Or are you developing a new explanation because existing theories cannot adequately account for the phenomenon?

These activities are often described as applying, testing, extending, and building theory. They overlap in real research, and terminology is not perfectly standardized across disciplines. Still, distinguishing them helps you make a much more precise claim about what your study contributes.

The distinction also prevents a common inflation of theoretical claims: describing any use of an existing theory as “theory testing,” any added variable as “theory extension,” or any researcher-created diagram as “theory building.”

02 · The Short Answer

The Difference Is What Happens Between Your Evidence and the Theory

In Brief

Applying theory uses an existing explanation to understand or address a problem; testing theory places theoretical claims under empirical scrutiny; extending theory develops an existing explanation; and building theory develops new explanatory concepts and relationships when existing explanations are insufficient.

These categories are analytically useful but not always mutually exclusive. A study can begin by testing a theory and discover evidence that motivates extension, while theory-building research inevitably engages prior knowledge to some degree. Describe what your study actually does rather than selecting the label that sounds most theoretically ambitious.

03 · What You Need to Know

Four Different Relationships Between Theory and Research

Applying theory means using an existing explanation

Theory application treats an established theory as a useful intellectual resource for understanding or addressing a phenomenon. The principal objective is not necessarily to change the theory itself.

For example, researchers might use an established motivational theory to design an educational intervention. They could use its constructs to identify barriers, develop intervention components, interpret participant behavior, or organize evaluation. The theory contributes structure to the work even if the researchers make no claim that the study revises the theory.

A recent methodological distinction in the Journal of Operations Management characterizes theory application as treating theoretical principles as given for the purpose at hand, without requiring results to feed back into revision of the theory. Theory testing, by contrast, places the theory itself under scrutiny.

This distinction is useful because researchers sometimes call any empirical use of a theory a “test.” If the theory merely helps you organize a study or understand a problem, application may be the more accurate description.

Testing theory means the theory itself is open to scrutiny

Theory testing asks whether evidence behaves as theoretical reasoning leads us to expect.

A theory may propose that A influences B, that C explains this relationship, or that the relationship should occur only under particular conditions. Researchers translate those theoretical propositions into empirical expectations and design a study capable of examining them.

The critical feature is feedback. The evidence matters for how the theoretical claim should subsequently be understood.

If the expected pattern appears, the evidence may be consistent with the proposition. If it does not, researchers should consider whether the theory, its scope, the translation from theory to empirical hypothesis, the measures, the design, or another assumption requires reconsideration.

Recent scholarship argues that theory testing can itself generate theoretical development because confronting theoretical conjectures with evidence can expose the need to challenge, elaborate, expand, or constrain them.

This is why challenging a theory is not the opposite of productive theory use. A credible test must permit the possibility that theoretical expectations will not survive unchanged.

Testing a hypothesis is not automatically testing a theory

Suppose your hypothesis states that perceived usefulness is positively associated with intention to use a technology. You analyze the data and observe the predicted relationship.

Have you tested the entire theory from which that hypothesis came?

Usually not.

A theory may contain several constructs, propositions, mechanisms, assumptions, and boundary conditions. One hypothesis examines only a limited implication of that larger theoretical structure. Moreover, the same empirical prediction may sometimes be compatible with more than one theory.

It is therefore more precise to say that evidence supports, fails to support, or challenges a particular theoretically derived prediction than to claim that one statistical test has “validated the theory.”

Extending theory means changing the explanation

Theory extension begins with an existing theoretical structure but proposes that something about it needs development.

The change might involve adding or distinguishing a construct, specifying a previously unclear mechanism, introducing a boundary condition, restructuring a relationship, clarifying temporal sequence, or explaining how the theory operates under conditions not adequately addressed by the original formulation.

The important feature is not that something new appears in the research model. It is that the addition or modification improves the theoretical explanation.

For example, suppose a theory predicts that intention leads to behavior. Researchers repeatedly observe that this relationship becomes much weaker when people lack the opportunity to act. Proposing opportunity as a theoretically justified boundary condition could refine when the original proposition should be expected to hold.

That is different from adding an unrelated predictor simply because doing so increases explained variance.

Researchers considering this type of contribution should be clear about what counts as a defensible modification or extension of an existing theory.

Building theory means developing explanatory structure

Theory building is the most easily overclaimed of these activities.

Finding a new theme is not necessarily theory building. Producing a conceptual diagram is not necessarily theory building. Discovering that one variable predicts another is not necessarily theory building.

Theory building involves developing an explanatory account. Depending on the scholarly tradition, this may include identifying concepts, specifying relationships among them, explaining mechanisms or processes, establishing conditions under which those relationships operate, and developing propositions that connect the explanation to observable phenomena.

Qualitative research is frequently associated with theory development because close engagement with empirical phenomena can reveal concepts and processes that existing theories do not adequately represent. Yet theory building should not be reduced to simple induction from data. Bendassolli's discussion of qualitative theory building emphasizes the longstanding problem of moving from particular observations to general theoretical statements and the need to reconsider how induction interacts with theoretical reasoning.

Abductive reasoning can also be important. Researchers encounter a surprising observation, consider possible explanations, move between data and existing knowledge, and progressively develop a theoretical account capable of making sense of the phenomenon. This process is more iterative than the image of theory simply “emerging” untouched from raw data.

The four activities differ in what they ask of existing theory

These are not necessarily four separate kinds of study

A single research project can move among them.

You might begin by testing an established theory. The predicted relationship appears in one context but disappears in another. Further analysis suggests a contextual mechanism that the original theory does not specify. You then propose a boundary condition that extends the theory.

Testing has led to extension.

Likewise, exploratory research may begin because no existing theory adequately explains a phenomenon. Researchers develop preliminary concepts from empirical evidence, compare those concepts with existing literature, refine relationships, and eventually construct a theoretical explanation.

Building theory therefore does not require pretending that previous scholarship never existed.

The difference between application and testing can be subtle

Consider two researchers using the same theory and collecting similar data.

The first uses the theory to design an intervention and evaluates whether the intervention improves outcomes. The theory helps identify what to change, but the researchers do not ask whether the findings require reconsidering the theory itself.

The second derives theoretically consequential expectations and explicitly asks what the results imply for the theory's propositions and boundaries.

The first is principally applying theory. The second is more clearly testing it.

The methods alone do not determine the distinction. What matters is the relationship between evidence and theoretical claims.

A new context does not automatically mean theory extension

Applying an established theory to generative AI instead of an older technology does not automatically extend the theory. Neither does conducting the study in a country where the theory has not previously been examined.

A new context can become theoretically consequential when it exposes something about the theory's mechanism, assumptions, or boundaries.

Suppose a theory assumes voluntary behavior. Applying it to mandatory technology use might reveal that a core relationship changes when choice is constrained. The contribution is not simply that the country, population, or technology is new. The contribution concerns what the context teaches us about the explanation.

Adding variables does not automatically mean theory extension

This deserves repetition because research models have a remarkable ability to acquire extra boxes.

If you add AI literacy, institutional support, trust, perceived risk, self-efficacy, and demographic characteristics to an established model, you have certainly made the model larger. Whether you have extended the theory depends on whether those additions alter or improve the theoretical explanation.

The researcher needs to explain why a construct belongs in the theoretical account, how it relates to existing mechanisms, and what explanatory limitation it addresses.

Theory building does not mean starting from complete theoretical ignorance

Researchers sometimes describe theory-building studies as though they must approach the phenomenon with no prior concepts whatsoever.

That position is difficult to sustain. Researchers enter studies with disciplinary knowledge, language, assumptions, methodological commitments, and awareness of previous literature. Qualitative methodological discussions have therefore questioned simplistic versions of pure induction and emphasized more iterative relationships among data, concepts, and theory.

The important methodological issue is how prior theory enters the inquiry. Does it determine categories in advance? Serve as a sensitizing resource? Provide explanations against which surprising findings are compared? Enter mainly during later interpretation?

Being explicit about that relationship is more useful than claiming that theory emerged from a conceptual vacuum.

The label should match the intended contribution

If your principal goal is to use a theory to understand a problem, say that you apply it.

If the theory itself is being subjected to a meaningful empirical test, explain what theoretical proposition is being examined.

If you propose a modification, identify what the existing explanation cannot adequately account for and how the extension addresses that limitation.

If you claim theory building, explain what new explanatory structure is being developed and how the evidence and reasoning support it.

Watch Out

Do not choose “theory building” or “theory extension” because those labels sound more publishable. Theoretical contribution depends on what the study actually establishes. An accurate claim of thoughtful theory application is stronger than an unsupported claim to have created a new theory.

Theoretical contribution is not a simple hierarchy

It is tempting to rank these activities: application at the bottom, testing somewhere in the middle, extension above it, and theory building at the top.

That hierarchy is misleading.

A rigorous test of an important theoretical claim can make a substantial contribution. Recent scholarship explicitly argues that theory testing can generate theory when empirical scrutiny leads researchers to reconsider theoretical conjectures.

Likewise, theory application can be highly valuable when it helps solve consequential problems, while weak theory building can generate an explanation that nobody particularly needed.

The value of the research depends on the importance of the problem, quality of reasoning, appropriateness of evidence, and contribution to knowledge, not simply the theoretical verb placed in the abstract.

04 · A Practical Example

The Same Topic Can Involve Four Different Relationships With Theory

Hypothetical Example

Researching faculty use of generative AI

Imagine four research teams studying faculty use of generative AI. All work on the same broad phenomenon, but their theoretical objectives differ.

Apply Researchers use an established behavior-change theory to design professional development intended to encourage responsible AI use. The theory helps determine intervention components, but changing the theory is not the study's objective.
Test Researchers derive a prediction that a particular theoretical construct should influence intention to use generative AI and design the study so that the resulting evidence bears on that proposition.
Extend Researchers observe that the predicted intention-behavior relationship changes dramatically under restrictive institutional AI policies. They propose institutional constraint as a theoretically meaningful boundary condition.
Build Researchers studying a poorly understood form of faculty resistance discover recurring processes that existing adoption theories do not adequately explain. Through iterative analysis and engagement with prior literature, they develop concepts and relationships explaining how professional identity, pedagogical judgment, and institutional authority interact.

The topic does not determine whether the study applies, tests, extends, or builds theory. The relationship between the research and the theoretical explanation does.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Common Mistakes When Describing Theoretical Contribution

Misconception

Using a theory means you are testing it

Not necessarily. Theory may organize a study, inform an intervention, guide interpretation, or help explain a problem without the research placing theoretical propositions under meaningful empirical scrutiny.

Misconception

Supporting a hypothesis validates the theory

A theoretically derived hypothesis usually represents only part of a theory, and alternative explanations may predict the same result. Evidence can be consistent with a theoretical proposition without establishing the entire theory as correct.

Misconception

Adding a variable extends the theory

An additional predictor becomes theoretically consequential only when its inclusion improves the explanation, such as by identifying a mechanism, boundary, construct distinction, or previously missing relationship.

Misconception

Creating a conceptual framework means you built a theory

A conceptual framework can organize literature and concepts without constituting a new explanatory theory. Theory building requires a stronger account of concepts, relationships, mechanisms, conditions, or propositions.

Misconception

Theory building must be completely inductive

Qualitative theory development may involve induction, but methodological scholarship has long questioned the idea that general theoretical explanation can simply be read directly from observations. Abductive and iterative movement between empirical evidence and existing theoretical knowledge can also contribute to theory building.

Misconception

Theory building is inherently more valuable than theory testing

The contribution depends on the research problem and quality of the theoretical work. A rigorous test that reveals an important theoretical limitation can advance knowledge substantially, while a poorly justified new theory may contribute little.

06 · What This Means for You

Choose the Theoretical Verb After Clarifying the Contribution

A simple decision framework

If theory primarily helps you understand, organize, design, or address the research problem
Describe the study principally as applying theory.
If evidence is intended to bear directly on whether theoretical propositions or mechanisms remain defensible
Describe the study as testing relevant theoretical claims and specify what is being tested.
If you propose a new construct, mechanism, relationship, sequence, or boundary that changes an existing explanation
Theory extension or elaboration may be appropriate if the modification is theoretically justified.
If existing theories cannot adequately explain the phenomenon and the study develops a new explanatory structure
Theory building may be an appropriate goal, provided the design and analysis support that level of contribution.
If your study moves from one activity to another
Describe the progression explicitly rather than forcing the entire project into one category.

Try completing this sentence: “The study uses Theory X to...”

If the next words are “organize,” “interpret,” or “design,” you may principally be applying theory. If they are “evaluate whether,” you may be testing a proposition. If they are “show that the theory needs,” you may be extending it. If no existing theory provides the explanation and your objective is to develop one, you may be building theory.

The verb should describe the scholarship. The scholarship should not be redesigned merely to justify the verb.

07 · A Quick Checklist

Before Claiming How Your Study Contributes to Theory

Check your theoretical claim:
State what role theory plays in the study without relying on generic phrases such as “provides a theoretical foundation.”
Distinguish using a theory from placing its propositions under empirical scrutiny.
Identify exactly which theoretical claims are tested rather than claiming to test an entire theory automatically.
If claiming extension, identify the explanatory limitation and the specific theoretical change proposed.
Do not equate additional predictors or improved statistical fit with theoretical extension.
If claiming theory building, show what explanatory concepts and relationships are actually being developed.
Explain how existing literature informed the theorizing process rather than implying that new theory appeared without prior knowledge.
Match the strength of the theoretical claim to what the research design and evidence can support.
Allow for the possibility that testing can lead to extension or theory generation when unexpected evidence changes the theoretical explanation.

Questions About Testing, Applying, Extending, and Building Theory

Is applying a theory the same as testing it?

No. Application principally uses theory to understand or address a problem. Testing places theoretical claims under empirical scrutiny so that findings have implications for whether those claims should be retained, qualified, or reconsidered.

If all my hypotheses are supported, have I validated the theory?

Usually that claim is too strong. Your study may provide evidence consistent with the theoretical propositions examined, but an entire theory may contain additional propositions, assumptions, mechanisms, and boundaries that your study did not test.

Does testing theory only mean quantitative hypothesis testing?

No. Theoretical claims can be scrutinized using different forms of evidence and methodology. What matters is whether the study provides evidence relevant to evaluating the explanation, not whether the analysis contains a particular statistical test.

Does adding a moderator mean I extended the theory?

Potentially, if the moderator represents a theoretically meaningful boundary condition and you explain why it changes the focal relationship. Merely discovering a statistically significant interaction does not by itself establish theory extension.

Can a study both test and extend a theory?

Yes. Testing may reveal an unexpected pattern that motivates theoretical refinement, or a study may evaluate both established propositions and a proposed extension. Keep the original theoretical expectations and the new contribution distinguishable.

Does grounded theory automatically mean theory building?

Grounded theory methodologies are explicitly oriented toward developing theory from systematic engagement with data, but merely coding qualitative data or identifying themes does not constitute grounded theory or theory building. The methodology and analytical procedures need to support theoretical development.

Can a descriptive study build theory?

Description can provide observations that motivate later theorizing, but theory building requires movement beyond describing what occurs toward explaining relationships, mechanisms, processes, or conditions. Whether a particular descriptive study achieves that depends on its analytical and theoretical contribution.

Which theoretical contribution is best for a thesis?

There is no universally superior category. The appropriate contribution depends on the research question, field, degree requirements, methodology, evidence, and state of the literature. A carefully executed application or test is preferable to an unsupported claim of theory extension or construction.

The Bottom Line

Applying theory uses an existing explanation, testing theory subjects theoretical claims to evidence, extending theory changes or elaborates an existing explanation, and building theory develops new explanatory structure where existing accounts are insufficient.

Real research can move among these activities, and none is automatically more scholarly than the others. Identify what happens between your evidence and the theory, describe that relationship accurately, and resist upgrading the theoretical claim simply because a more ambitious verb sounds impressive.
