Should You Choose a Topic You Already Know Well or Explore Something New?

Knowing a topic well can give you context, vocabulary, and a faster start, while exploring something new can expose you to questions and perspectives you might otherwise miss. The better choice depends on the research question, learning curve, feasibility, support, and what your existing knowledge helps or prevents you from seeing.

01 · The Question

Is It Better to Research What You Know or Learn Something New?

You have two possible research directions. One sits comfortably inside an area you already understand. You know the terminology, have read some of the literature, understand the context, and can already see possible questions. The other is unfamiliar but compelling. It would require considerably more learning, yet it might take your research in a direction you find more interesting.

Which is the better choice?

There is no general rule that researchers should stay inside familiar territory or deliberately choose unfamiliar subjects. Existing knowledge can make a project more efficient and informed, but familiarity can also encourage assumptions and intellectual repetition. A new area can expand your thinking, but the learning curve can consume time and expose gaps in theory, methods, terminology, or disciplinary knowledge.

The useful comparison is therefore not familiar versus unfamiliar in isolation. It is what each option allows you to investigate, what it requires you to learn, and whether you can become sufficiently prepared to conduct the proposed study well.

Choose the Better Research Opportunity, Not Simply the More Familiar Topic

In Brief

You do not need to choose a topic simply because you already know it well, nor should you choose something unfamiliar merely for novelty. A strong choice gives you a worthwhile, focused, and feasible research question and enough time, resources, support, and motivation to develop the knowledge required to answer it credibly.

Familiarity can reduce the initial learning curve and provide useful contextual knowledge. A new area can broaden your expertise and expose you to different questions. In either case, existing knowledge should be treated as a starting position rather than proof that you already understand the research problem.

03 · What You Need to Know

What Changes When You Already Know the Topic?

Familiarity Can Give You a Head Start

If you already know an area, you may enter the project with useful intellectual infrastructure. You might recognize important terminology, major concepts, established methods, influential debates, common data sources, practical constraints, or key scholars. That can make preliminary searching and question development more efficient.

Familiarity may also help you recognize why a seemingly simple question is actually complicated. You may know that two terms used interchangeably by newcomers have distinct meanings in the field, that a popular explanation has been contested, or that a seemingly obvious method cannot measure what the project requires.

Research guidance from the Australian National University emphasizes the importance of understanding the current state of knowledge and how a proposed study fits with research already conducted in the field. Familiarity can make that orientation easier, although it does not replace the need to examine the relevant literature systematically.

Knowing the Context Can Reveal Better Questions

Expertise is not valuable only because it saves reading time. It can change what you notice.

Someone familiar with a field may recognize anomalies, unresolved disagreements, neglected assumptions, methodological limitations, or practical details that a newcomer would not initially understand. A practitioner may know where official procedures diverge from actual practice. A researcher who has followed a literature for years may notice that a widely repeated claim rests on surprisingly limited evidence.

This is one reason familiarity can be particularly useful when a research idea emerges from personal or professional experience. Contextual knowledge can direct attention toward meaningful questions.

It still does not establish that your interpretation is correct. Knowing a setting well and researching it rigorously are different accomplishments.

Familiarity Can Also Make Assumptions Harder to See

The phrase “I already know this area” deserves scrutiny. What exactly do you know?

You may know professional practice but not the scholarly literature. You may know one theoretical tradition but not competing explanations. You may understand a population from one institutional perspective while knowing little about how participants themselves understand the issue. You may know the literature as it existed several years ago but not its current direction.

Familiarity can also make concepts feel more settled than they are. When you have used the same terminology for years, you may stop asking whether definitions are contested. When a particular explanation is conventional within your workplace or research group, it may become difficult to recognize it as an assumption rather than an established fact.

Watch Out

Do not substitute familiarity for verification. “I know this field” is not evidence that your proposed problem has not already been addressed, that your preferred explanation is correct, or that the literature still looks the way you remember it. Search and evaluate the current evidence.

A New Topic Can Force You to Ask More Basic Questions

Entering an unfamiliar area can initially feel inefficient because you need to learn terminology, foundational literature, theories, methods, and disciplinary conventions. Yet that unfamiliarity can sometimes be intellectually productive.

A newcomer is more likely to encounter concepts that require explanation rather than accepting them automatically. You may notice that two literatures use different language for similar phenomena, question a convention that insiders rarely articulate, or bring a method or theoretical perspective from another field.

ANU's guidance on research contributions recognizes that useful research can include applying established approaches to new problems or contexts, challenging prevailing theories or methodologies, continuing established lines of inquiry, or providing new data. Novelty therefore does not require entering a completely unfamiliar field, but crossing intellectual boundaries can sometimes create productive research opportunities.

Being New to a Topic Is Not the Same as Bringing a New Perspective

Do not romanticize outsider status. Ignorance and originality are not synonyms.

A question may seem revolutionary only because you have not yet encountered the literature that already addresses it. A disciplinary convention may appear arbitrary until you understand the theoretical or methodological problem it was designed to solve. You may unknowingly repeat terminology that the field has abandoned or propose a method that specialists already know is unsuitable.

The advantage of entering a new area appears only if you do the work required to become sufficiently informed. Newness may help you ask questions; scholarship helps you determine whether those questions are actually new, important, and answerable.

The Real Issue Is the Size of the Knowledge Gap You Must Close

“Familiar” and “new” are not binary categories. Research topics exist along a spectrum.

You might know the phenomenon but not the method. You might understand the theory but be new to the population. You might have extensive professional experience but little academic background in the relevant discipline. You might be entering a neighboring literature that shares many concepts with your existing field.

This is a more useful assessment than simply asking whether you have studied the topic before. Identify precisely what you already know and what the proposed project would require you to learn.

A New Area Requires an Orientation Phase

If you choose an unfamiliar topic, expect to spend time learning how the field talks about itself before finalizing the project.

Monash University's research guidance recommends beginning with reading in the research area and developing an initial understanding of the literature before generating a specific research question. It describes good research questions as formed and iterated rather than simply found.

That process becomes especially important when you are new to the area. Your first search terms may be poor. Your initial categories may not match the field's concepts. A question that looks focused to you may combine several separate debates.

Do not interpret this early uncertainty as evidence that the topic is unsuitable. Instead, decide whether you have enough time and support to move through it. The related question is how much you need to know before committing to the topic.

Familiarity Matters More When the Project Is Short

The amount of unfamiliarity you can reasonably absorb depends partly on the scale of the project.

A short research assignment, semester project, or tightly scheduled thesis may leave little time to master an entirely new literature and a difficult new methodology simultaneously. A longer research degree may provide more room for substantial intellectual development, although the expectations for depth and contribution are also greater.

ANU's research-proposal guidance explicitly notes that appropriate scope varies with the level and length of the research project. It also emphasizes that research questions should be narrow enough to address with the time and resources available.

The practical implication is not “short project equals familiar topic.” It is that the learning curve belongs inside your feasibility calculation.

Do Not Count Only the Time Needed to Collect Data

Researchers sometimes evaluate feasibility by asking whether they can recruit participants, obtain records, conduct experiments, or complete analysis before a deadline. That leaves out the time needed to become competent enough to make those decisions well.

If the topic is unfamiliar, budget time for foundational reading, terminology, theory, methodological conventions, searching, discussion with knowledgeable researchers, and possibly training. If the method is also unfamiliar, include the time required to learn the technique, software, equipment, analytic framework, or interpretive approach.

A project can therefore have easily accessible data and still be infeasible because the intellectual and methodological preparation exceeds the available time.

Your Existing Expertise Should Help the Question, Not Dictate It

There is another danger at the familiar end of the spectrum: choosing a question merely because it lets you reuse what you already know.

Perhaps you know a particular statistical technique, archive, laboratory procedure, theoretical framework, or dataset extremely well. Reusing that expertise can be efficient. But the research question should still determine what evidence and approach are appropriate.

If you find yourself asking, “What question can I invent that lets me use this method again?”, reverse the reasoning. First establish the problem and question. Then ask whether your familiar approach can answer it credibly.

A New Topic Can Be Strategically Valuable

Research can also be a deliberate opportunity to build expertise you want for future work. An unfamiliar area may connect your existing background to a developing research program, another discipline, a methodological specialty, or a professional direction.

That does not mean choosing topics solely for résumé value. It means that the learning produced by a project is a legitimate factor in the decision when the research itself remains worthwhile.

Monash's research offerings illustrate both possibilities: its research-topic coursework explicitly allows students either to pursue a topic of interest not covered elsewhere or to develop deeper knowledge in an area with which they already have familiarity.

Supervision Matters More as the Distance From Your Expertise Grows

The further a project moves beyond your current knowledge, the more consequential appropriate guidance can become.

A supervisor or collaborator with relevant expertise can help identify foundational literature, correct misunderstandings early, recognize unrealistic questions, advise on methods, and distinguish genuinely promising cross-disciplinary ideas from questions that only appear novel to a newcomer.

Monash's current graduate-research guidance treats fit among the research area, researcher, supervisor, and research group as an important consideration when finding supervision.

This does not mean you must restrict yourself to whatever your supervisor already studies. It means that supervisory expertise should be part of the feasibility assessment, especially when the proposed project requires substantial new knowledge.

Interest Still Matters on Both Sides of the Choice

A familiar topic can become tedious if you are choosing it only because it feels safe. An unfamiliar topic can become exhausting if its novelty is the only thing attracting you.

Monash's topic-selection guidance encourages researchers to explore areas that interest and engage them before narrowing their choice. Interest does not override feasibility or significance, but it matters because research demands sustained attention.

If your primary reason for leaving a familiar field is boredom, ask whether a new question within that field would restore your interest. If your primary reason for choosing an unfamiliar field is novelty, ask whether you will still care once the novelty disappears and the difficult work begins.

Choosing a research topic because it genuinely interests you can be sensible, but interest should survive contact with the literature and practical demands of the project.

04 · A Practical Example

Comparing a Safe Topic With an Unfamiliar One

Hypothetical Example

An Ecology Student Choosing Between Two Projects

Imagine a master's student who has previous research experience monitoring freshwater insects. The student is considering two possible projects.

Option A: Familiar territory Investigate how seasonal flow variation relates to the abundance of a freshwater insect group the student has previously sampled and identified.
What the student already has Taxonomic familiarity, field-sampling experience, knowledge of relevant environmental variables, and some familiarity with the literature.
Risk of Option A The initial question closely resembles previous work. The student must establish whether the proposed study contributes something meaningful rather than choosing it only because the project feels easy to execute.
Option B: New territory Investigate environmental DNA as an alternative way of detecting freshwater biodiversity in the same ecosystem.
What must be learned A different literature, laboratory procedures, contamination controls, sequencing or analytical concepts, and the limitations involved in interpreting environmental DNA evidence.
Risk of Option B The project may offer greater methodological development, but the combined training and research workload could become unrealistic if the necessary laboratory expertise and supervision are unavailable.
Decision The student compares the actual questions, potential contribution, training requirements, available facilities, supervision, timeline, and personal goals rather than automatically choosing familiarity or novelty.

Suppose appropriate laboratory support is available and the new project has a well-defined, feasible question. Option B may be an excellent choice even though the student begins with less expertise. If that support is absent and the degree has a tight completion schedule, Option A may be stronger, provided the question makes a worthwhile contribution.

The important point is that familiarity itself does not make Option A academically better, while novelty itself does not make Option B more original. The quality of the eventual research depends on the question, contribution, design, execution, and interpretation.

Misconception

Should Beginners Always Choose a Topic They Already Know?

No. Researchers routinely deepen their knowledge through research. A newcomer can study an unfamiliar area if the learning requirements are realistic and appropriate guidance and resources are available. The relevant question is whether you can become sufficiently prepared to conduct the proposed study well.

Misconception

If I Know the Topic Well, Can I Spend Less Time Reviewing the Literature?

Not safely. Prior knowledge can make literature searching more efficient, but it can also be outdated, incomplete, practice-based, or concentrated in one perspective. A research project still needs an adequate understanding of the relevant current scholarship and how the proposed study fits within it.

Misconception

Will an Unfamiliar Topic Automatically Produce More Original Research?

No. A topic is unfamiliar relative to you, not necessarily to the research community. What seems new from outside a field may be well established within it. Originality must be assessed against existing knowledge, not against your personal knowledge.

Does Familiarity Automatically Make the Project More Feasible?

No. Familiarity reduces only some kinds of uncertainty. A familiar topic may still require inaccessible data, expensive equipment, difficult recruitment, advanced analysis, lengthy fieldwork, or ethical permissions that make the project impractical.

Should I Choose Something Completely Different to Broaden My Skills?

Not necessarily. Skill development is a legitimate consideration, but a project that requires you to learn a new discipline, method, software environment, and substantive literature simultaneously may create more risk than useful development. Strategic novelty is usually more manageable than novelty in every dimension at once.

Is Staying in My Existing Area Intellectually Unambitious?

No. Deep expertise can support sophisticated questions that are difficult for newcomers to recognize. Continuing an established line of inquiry, challenging existing theory, developing new methods, or producing new evidence can all constitute meaningful research contributions.

Compare the Learning Burden With the Research Payoff

If you are deciding between a familiar and unfamiliar topic, do not score “familiarity” as though more were automatically better. Break the decision into the parts that familiarity actually affects.

A simple decision framework

If the familiar topic gives you a strong question and a clear contribution
Use your existing knowledge as an advantage, but verify the current literature and actively challenge assumptions that familiarity may have made invisible.
If the familiar topic feels safe but the question feels weak
Do not choose it merely because execution will be easier. Look for a stronger question within the area or compare it with other possibilities.
If the unfamiliar topic has a compelling question
Map exactly what you must learn before deciding. Separate substantive knowledge, theory, methods, technical skills, and disciplinary conventions.
If the new project requires unfamiliarity in several dimensions at once
Check whether the timeline, supervision, collaborators, training, and resources realistically support that learning curve.
If both projects are viable
Compare significance, interest, contribution, feasibility, data access, methodological fit, supervision, and what expertise you want to develop rather than using familiarity as the deciding factor.

A useful strategy is to create a “knowledge-gap map” for each candidate topic. Divide a page into what you already understand, what you need to learn, what you need help with, and what you cannot realistically learn or obtain within the project. That makes the cost of unfamiliarity visible instead of treating it as a vague feeling.

Do the same for the familiar project. List what you may be taking for granted, which parts of your knowledge come from experience rather than systematic evidence, and which areas of the literature you have not revisited recently. Familiarity has hidden costs too.

Watch Out

Do not compare a fully developed familiar project with a vague unfamiliar idea and conclude that the familiar one is obviously better. Give the new idea enough preliminary investigation to determine what it could actually become. Conversely, do not compare the exciting promise of a new field with the mundane realities of a familiar project without estimating the new project's learning and execution costs.

Before Choosing Familiarity or Something New

Compare each possible research topic:
Identify exactly what you already know: subject matter, theory, methods, population, setting, data sources, or technical skills.
List what you would need to learn before you could formulate and conduct the study competently.
Do preliminary reading on both options so you are comparing actual research possibilities rather than familiarity with novelty.
Check whether the familiar topic contains a worthwhile question rather than merely an easy project.
Check whether the unfamiliar topic is genuinely promising rather than merely new to you.
Estimate the time required for learning and training in addition to the time required for data collection, analysis, and writing.
Verify that suitable supervision, collaboration, facilities, data, participants, methods, and other resources are available.
Identify assumptions your familiarity may encourage and misunderstandings your unfamiliarity may create.
Consider which project better supports the expertise and research direction you want to develop without sacrificing research quality.

Questions About Familiar and Unfamiliar Research Topics

Can I research a topic I know almost nothing about?

Yes, provided you have enough time and support to develop the required knowledge before making claims or methodological decisions that depend on it. Begin with exploratory reading and determine the scale of the learning curve before committing to the project.

Do I need to be an expert before choosing a research topic?

No. Research itself involves developing expertise. You do, however, need enough preliminary understanding to judge whether the proposed question is meaningful, appropriately scoped, connected to existing knowledge, and feasible within your project.

Is it easier to research something I already know?

It can be easier to orient yourself because you may already know terminology, context, literature, methods, or data sources. That does not guarantee an easier study overall; feasibility also depends on the research question, evidence requirements, access, methods, ethics, resources, and scope.

Can being too familiar with a topic be a disadvantage?

Yes. Familiarity can make assumptions, terminology, routines, and preferred explanations feel self-evident. Counter this by checking current evidence, seeking alternative perspectives, making assumptions explicit, and remaining open to findings that challenge what you think you know.

Is changing fields for a thesis or dissertation a bad idea?

Not inherently. Interdisciplinary and cross-field research can be valuable, but the transition needs realistic planning. Determine what literature, theory, methods, terminology, and disciplinary conventions you must learn and whether appropriate supervision and time are available.

Should I choose a new topic to make my research more original?

No. Personal unfamiliarity is not scholarly originality. A contribution is judged in relation to existing research. You can make an original contribution within a field you know extremely well, while a subject that is completely new to you may already have an extensive literature.

What if I am more interested in the unfamiliar topic but more qualified for the familiar one?

Compare the actual learning gap rather than choosing immediately. If the unfamiliar project is worthwhile and the missing knowledge can realistically be developed with available time and support, your lower starting expertise need not disqualify it. If critical gaps cannot be closed within the project, modify the question or choose the more viable option.

Start From the Stronger Position for the Study You Want to Conduct

The Bottom Line

Choose neither familiarity nor novelty for its own sake. Choose the research direction that offers a worthwhile question and a realistic path to acquiring the knowledge, evidence, methods, and support needed to answer it well.

Existing expertise can accelerate your research and reveal sophisticated questions, but it can also hide assumptions. Entering a new area can expand your thinking and capabilities, but unfamiliarity has a real learning cost. Treat both as factors in research design and feasibility rather than as rules about which topics researchers are allowed to pursue.
