What You Actually Need to Know Before Saying Yes to a Topic
There Is No Magic Number of Articles
“How many papers should I read before choosing?” sounds like a practical question, but a numerical answer would be misleading.
Ten papers can be more than enough to reject one idea and nowhere near enough to understand another. A well-established field may have several recent reviews that quickly reveal its structure. A highly specialized or interdisciplinary question may require searching several literatures before you even discover the terminology researchers use.
The appropriate amount of preliminary reading also depends on the project. Choosing a topic for a short course assignment is not the same decision as committing to a doctoral research program.
University guidance reflects this emphasis on understanding rather than quotas. Monash recommends pre-reading to develop an overall idea of a research area and possible project direction, then conducting more extensive review work after an initial search has helped narrow the idea.
First Learn the Vocabulary of the Field
One of the earliest signs that you know too little about a topic is that you cannot yet search for it effectively.
Your everyday wording may not match the terminology used in scholarship. A concept may have several names. A term you assume has one meaning may have a narrower technical definition. Different disciplines may describe similar phenomena differently.
Preliminary reading should therefore help you build a working vocabulary: central concepts, synonyms, related terminology, important distinctions, and the language researchers use to describe the phenomenon.
This is not cosmetic. Better terminology changes what you can find. A topic that initially appears almost unstudied may turn out to have a substantial literature once you discover the established search terms.
Find Out What Kind of Literature You Have Entered
You do not need to map every paper before deciding, but you should begin to recognize the shape of the field.
Is there a substantial established literature or only scattered work? Are there recent reviews? Which theories or conceptual frameworks recur? Are researchers debating competing explanations? What kinds of populations, settings, evidence, and methods dominate the research?
Monash recommends review articles as an efficient way to gain an overview of a research area and identify prominent researchers and foundational studies, while also recommending recent searches to see what is happening in the area currently.
That combination is useful because older foundational work and current research answer different orientation questions. One helps you understand how the field developed; the other helps you avoid making decisions based on an outdated picture.
Know Enough to Explain What Might Be Worth Investigating
A broad interest is enough to begin exploring. Before committing to a formal study, you should be able to say something more specific about why further investigation might be worthwhile.
Perhaps previous studies disagree. A mechanism remains unclear. A theory has not been adequately tested under relevant conditions. An important phenomenon is poorly characterized. Existing methods have limitations. A practical problem contains an unresolved question. A new development changes assumptions underlying older research.
You do not necessarily need a polished problem statement at this stage. You do need something more substantial than “I like this topic” or “I could not immediately find many papers.”
ANU's research-proposal guidance asks researchers who have done some reading to consider what they already know, what research has been conducted, and how their proposed work fits with existing research.
Know Enough to Discover That Your First Idea Is Wrong
Preliminary research is successful even when it persuades you not to pursue the original idea.
You might discover that the question has already been answered convincingly. What appeared to be a gap may exist only because your first search used the wrong terminology. The relationship you wanted to study may depend on concepts you had not considered. The population you planned to investigate may have been studied extensively. Your assumed explanation may conflict with strong existing evidence.
None of these discoveries means you wasted time. Rejecting or substantially revising a weak project before committing to it is one of the most valuable outcomes preliminary research can produce.
Watch Out
Do not conduct preliminary searches only to confirm that your idea is good. Search for reasons it might be poorly framed, already answered, conceptually confused, methodologically impractical, or less significant than you assumed. Topic selection benefits from attempted falsification too.
Know Enough to See More Than One Possible Question
A useful sign of developing understanding is that the topic begins generating alternatives.
At first, “algorithmic recommendations and music” might feel like one research idea. After preliminary reading, you may see distinct questions involving discovery, diversity of exposure, user agency, popularity, platform design, artist visibility, listener satisfaction, or perceptions of recommendation quality.
This multiplication of possibilities can feel like the topic is becoming less clear. Often it means the opposite: you are beginning to understand its internal structure.
You can then decide which part deserves deeper investigation rather than treating the broad subject as though it contains only one obvious study.
Know Enough to Estimate the Scope
You cannot judge whether a topic is manageable while you still see it only as a broad label.
Preliminary knowledge helps you identify the dimensions along which a topic could expand: population, setting, timeframe, outcome, mechanism, comparison, theory, data source, method, or level of analysis.
ANU advises that research questions need enough scope to support research while remaining narrow enough for a focused project, and notes that the appropriate level of detail depends on the degree, research stage, and disciplinary requirements.
This does not mean finalizing every boundary before choosing the topic. It means seeing enough of the territory to recognize whether a plausible route to a manageable project exists. Later, you can narrow the topic systematically around the question that emerges.
Know Enough to Make a Preliminary Feasibility Judgment
An intellectually promising topic can still be a poor project for your circumstances.
Before committing, identify what kind of evidence the likely questions would require. Would you need participants from a difficult-to-access population? Proprietary data? Archival material in another country? Laboratory equipment? Longitudinal observation? Specialized software? Language skills? Advanced statistical or qualitative methods?
You do not need a finalized methodology at this point. You should, however, detect obvious mismatches between the research you imagine and the resources you actually possess.
Monash's research-question guidance explicitly treats feasibility as a characteristic of a workable question, while ANU emphasizes developing questions appropriate to the scale and resources of the project.
Check Whether the Evidence You Would Need Exists or Can Be Created
A topic may appear fascinating until you ask what would count as evidence.
Suppose you want to study how a proprietary algorithm changed over the last decade. If historical versions, outputs, documentation, or suitable observational data cannot be obtained, your preferred question may be impossible to answer directly.
That does not necessarily mean abandoning the subject. You might formulate another question using accessible evidence. But this decision is easier before you become attached to one design.
Data access is important enough to deserve separate consideration when deciding whether available data should influence topic selection.
Know Enough to Identify What You Do Not Know
Early expertise is not demonstrated by having an answer to everything. A better indicator is that your unknowns become more precise.
At the beginning you might say, “I know nothing about this subject.” After useful preliminary reading, you can say, “I understand the main theoretical disagreement, but I do not yet understand how this construct is measured,” or “I can see the relevant literature, but I still need to investigate whether the necessary dataset is accessible.”
Those are actionable uncertainties. You can investigate them before committing or decide that they are reasonable things to learn during the project.
Do Not Wait Until You Feel Like an Expert
If your standard is “I will choose the topic once I fully understand it,” you may never choose.
Research topics often become more complicated as you learn about them. Reading exposes disagreements and qualifications that were invisible at the beginning. Expertise tends to reveal uncertainty rather than eliminate it.
Monash describes research questions as formed and iterated rather than simply found: researchers begin with something of interest and refine it until it becomes workable.
That means topic selection can be provisional. You are deciding that an area deserves deeper investment, not promising that your current understanding and question will remain unchanged.
Preliminary Reading and a Literature Review Have Different Jobs
These activities overlap, but it is useful to distinguish their immediate purposes.

Monash makes a similar practical distinction: pre-reading can help researchers decide their specific area and possible direction, after which a more thorough literature review develops understanding and leads logically toward the research question.
The Threshold Changes With the Commitment You Are Making
How much you should know depends partly on what happens after you say yes.
Choosing a tentative subject for exploratory reading requires relatively little commitment. Registering a dissertation proposal, applying for funding, beginning ethics review, arranging expensive fieldwork, or committing several years to a doctorate demands much more confidence in the topic's scholarly and practical foundations.
A useful principle is proportionality: the harder a research decision will be to reverse, the more due diligence you should conduct before making it.
This also explains why choosing between a familiar and unfamiliar research area changes the amount of orientation required. You may reach an informed decision more quickly in one field than another without either field being inherently better.
