How Far Back You Search Should Follow the History of the Question
“From inception” means from the beginning of the source's available coverage
In systematic review methods, you may encounter phrases such as searched from inception or searched from database inception.
This does not mean searching all scholarship ever produced on the subject. It means searching the bibliographic source from the beginning of the coverage available through that source or datafile, unless a justified later boundary applies.
Database inception
The beginning of the database or datafile coverage available for searching.
Beginning of the research topic
The point at which evidence relevant to your particular question could reasonably have begun to exist.
Those dates can be very different.
A database may contain records dating back many decades, while the technology in your research question may have existed for only several years. Conversely, the phenomenon you are studying may predate the database's electronic coverage.
This is why “search from inception” is a description of source coverage, not a universal rule about how old your evidence must be.
Start by asking when relevant evidence could have existed
A defensible lower boundary begins with the phenomenon rather than an arbitrary number of years.
Suppose you are investigating the effects of a particular digital learning platform introduced in 2018. Studies of that specific platform could not have been published in 1995. Searching decades earlier for the platform itself would add no eligible evidence.
Now consider a question about feedback and student learning. Research relevant to that phenomenon has a much longer history. Restricting the search to the last five or ten years merely because recent articles are easier to obtain could exclude substantial relevant evidence.
Cochrane's current guidance allows date restrictions when they follow directly from eligibility criteria and it is known that relevant studies could only have been reported during a particular period. It gives the example of an intervention involving epinephrine autoinjectors, where a lower date boundary can be linked to the approval of the first device. Arbitrary date restrictions, by contrast, are not recommended for Cochrane intervention reviews because eligible evidence may be lost.
Use a historical event when it creates a genuine eligibility boundary
A later starting date is strongest when something happened that makes earlier studies logically or methodologically ineligible.

A historical milestone is useful only if it corresponds to the scope of the question. A famous event in the field does not automatically create a legitimate search cutoff.
If there is no defensible boundary, searching from inception may be safer
Some research questions have no obvious lower date boundary.
The phenomenon may have been studied for decades. The intervention may have evolved gradually rather than appearing at a clearly identifiable moment. A theory may have predecessors under different names. Relevant evidence may exist long before the terminology currently used to describe the topic.
For comprehensive evidence synthesis, restricting such a search to recent years can create an avoidable risk of missing eligible studies.
Cochrane requires searches to cover relevant time periods and advises that date restrictions should be justified. For intervention reviews, arbitrary restrictions such as searching only the last twenty years are not recommended when older studies remain eligible.
In that situation, searching the database from its earliest relevant coverage may be the more defensible default.
Watch Out
“I only want recent research” is not necessarily a methodological reason to exclude older studies. If older evidence still satisfies the research question and eligibility criteria, a recent-year cutoff changes the evidence base rather than merely making the search more convenient.
Searching from inception does not mean every old paper will be included
This distinction prevents a great deal of unnecessary anxiety.
Searching broadly in time determines what can be retrieved. Inclusion criteria determine what ultimately belongs in the review.
A database search may retrieve a study from 1987. You may then determine during screening that it is irrelevant because the intervention, population, or context does not meet your criteria.
That does not mean searching 1987 was a mistake.
Search coverage
Determines which records have an opportunity to be identified.
Study eligibility
Determines which retrieved studies actually qualify for inclusion.
The search can therefore extend farther back than the literature you eventually discuss or include.
Do not assume that the current name of a concept marks its beginning
Terminology changes.
A contemporary concept may have been investigated under older labels long before its current terminology became standard. Searching backward using only modern vocabulary can therefore create the illusion that the literature begins later than it really does.
This is particularly important for topics involving technologies, diagnoses, educational approaches, social phenomena, and theoretical constructs whose terminology has evolved.
When searching older literature, examine seminal papers and historical terminology. Older subject headings may also differ from current controlled vocabulary.
In other words, extending the date range without adapting the vocabulary may provide little additional coverage. Search history and terminology need to be considered together.
Emerging technologies require a careful definition of what actually began
A new technology can appear to offer an obvious starting date, but the boundary may be less straightforward than it first seems.
Suppose your research concerns generative AI in education. If you define the phenomenon narrowly around a particular generation of publicly accessible generative AI systems, a recent starting point may be defensible.
But if the question concerns AI-supported writing more broadly, relevant work may include earlier research on natural language generation, automated writing assistance, intelligent tutoring, automated feedback, or other precursor technologies.
The date boundary therefore depends on how you define the phenomenon.
This is why the broader decision about what date range the literature search should use needs to follow the conceptual scope rather than precede it.
Older evidence may serve a different purpose from recent evidence
Even when the empirical focus of a study is contemporary, older literature may still be needed for other parts of the research.
You may need older publications to identify:
- the original formulation of a theory;
- the development of a measurement instrument;
- a landmark methodological paper;
- the historical origin of a research problem;
- early evidence against which later developments are compared.
This means different searches within the same research project may legitimately extend to different periods.
A search for current empirical evidence about a technology may begin relatively recently. A separate search for the theoretical construct used to interpret that evidence may need to extend several decades further back.
There is no methodological virtue in forcing every information need into one temporal window.
Older does not mean obsolete, and recent does not mean superior
Publication age should not be used as a proxy for quality.
An older randomized trial can remain methodologically relevant. A foundational theory can remain conceptually important. An original validation study can remain necessary for understanding a measurement instrument.
Conversely, a paper published this year can still be weak, tangential, or inappropriate for your question.
Recency matters when the underlying phenomenon changes over time. It does not independently establish relevance or methodological quality.
The database itself may not go back far enough
Searching “from inception” can sound comprehensive while still leaving historical gaps.
Bibliographic databases have different coverage periods, and their coverage may vary by journal, document type, region, or datafile. Cochrane advises searchers to consider the coverage dates of the datafiles being searched and notes that additional sources or datafiles may be necessary to cover the period relevant to a review.
Suppose your research question requires evidence from the 1950s, but the particular database or subscription configuration you are using provides reliable coverage only from a later period. Searching that source “from inception” does not solve the missing decades.
You may need another database, archive, index, or complementary search method.
Watch Out
Do not use “from inception” as shorthand for “all relevant literature has been searched.” It describes how far back you searched a particular source. Whether that source actually covers the historical literature you need is a separate question.
Coverage may also be uneven within the database
A database's headline coverage date does not necessarily mean every journal and every record type is represented consistently from that year onward.
Databases evolve. Journals are added and removed. Backfiles may be incorporated later. Subject indexing changes. Regional and non-English coverage may differ across periods.
This matters particularly for older literature. If historical completeness is important to the research question, consult the database provider's current coverage information rather than assuming that the earliest year displayed in the interface represents uniform coverage.
Database selection therefore matters alongside date selection. The question of how many databases you actually need should be driven partly by whether the selected sources collectively cover the relevant disciplines and time periods.
Searching more databases does not automatically repair missing historical coverage
If one database begins too late, adding another database may help, but only if the additional source covers the missing literature.
Searching five databases with similar temporal and disciplinary coverage does not necessarily provide better historical retrieval than searching two well-chosen complementary sources.
The objective is coverage, not database accumulation.
This is one reason searching more databases does not automatically make a literature search better. Their relevance, overlap, historical coverage, and disciplinary reach matter more than the raw count.
Backward citation searching can help you move beyond an arbitrary cutoff
Once you identify an important relevant paper, examine the sources it cites. Those references can lead to earlier studies, conceptual predecessors, original instruments, or foundational work.
This is especially useful when terminology has changed and older literature is difficult to retrieve with contemporary keywords.
Citation searching should not automatically replace a properly designed database search when comprehensive retrieval is required. It is a complementary technique that can expose literature your initial terminology or database indexing did not capture well.
If following references repeatedly takes you farther back while continuing to uncover material that directly informs the research question, that is evidence that your original temporal boundary may deserve reconsideration.
A seminal paper is not automatically the beginning of the literature
Researchers sometimes identify a highly cited paper and use its publication year as the starting point for the search.
That can be appropriate if the paper introduced the exact phenomenon or intervention that defines eligibility. But highly influential publications often synthesize, rename, or formalize ideas that existed earlier.
Check the paper's references. Ask whether it presents something genuinely new or whether it builds on an earlier body of work.
The first paper you encounter is not necessarily the first paper that matters.
Historical questions require intentionally deep searching
If your research question concerns development over time, intellectual history, the evolution of a method, or changes in scholarly understanding, older literature is not merely background. It is part of the evidence.
In such cases, a recent-year restriction can fundamentally undermine the question.
Historical searching may require older bibliographic indexes, archives, citation chaining, handsearching, alternative terminology, and sources beyond the databases normally used for current research.
The search strategy should therefore reflect not only how far back the question goes but how discoverable literature from that period actually is.
For systematic reviews, the eligibility criteria should determine the temporal boundary
For a protocol-based systematic review, the lower search date should not be invented independently from the eligibility criteria.
If studies from any year are eligible, restricting the database to the last ten years creates an inconsistency: evidence qualifies according to the protocol but is prevented from being found by the search.
Cochrane's current mandatory guidance states that publication-date restrictions in database searches should be used only when corresponding restrictions exist in the eligibility criteria and when it is known that relevant studies could only have been reported during the specified period.
This reinforces the importance of deciding inclusion and exclusion criteria before the formal search for systematic evidence synthesis.
An update is different from an original search
If you are updating an existing systematic review, searching from database inception again may be unnecessary.
Cochrane notes that an existing search strategy can sometimes be rerun with date limits covering the period after the previous search, provided the strategy remains appropriate. Importantly, update searches may use a database entry date rather than publication date so that records newly added to the database can be identified without repeating the entire original search.
This is a different rationale from saying that older studies no longer matter. They were already covered by the original review.
The oldest paper you cite and the earliest year you search do not need to match
Suppose you search from 1980 and ultimately include no studies published before 2007.
That is not necessarily inefficient or contradictory. The search established that potentially eligible literature could be considered across the earlier period. Screening then determined that the retrieved older records did not meet the criteria.
Likewise, your introduction might cite a theoretical publication from 1965 even though an empirical systematic review within the same paper begins in 2000 because the review concerns an intervention that did not exist earlier.
Different evidence serves different purposes.
Report what “from inception” actually meant
If you report that a database was searched from inception, readers should be able to determine the actual period covered.
Cochrane reporting guidance recommends specifying the dates of coverage of databases searched. Its search-methods guidance also recommends giving the inception date of the database where known and reporting database date ranges explicitly.
For example, rather than relying only on:
MEDLINE was searched from inception.
a reproducible report should identify the database and platform and provide the relevant coverage period and final search date according to the reporting standard being followed.
Recording this information as you search is much easier than reconstructing it months later. The exact details that should be preserved are covered in what you should record to reproduce a literature search.
