How Much Detail Does a Research Contribution Claim Need?
Researchers are often told to make their contribution clear. The resulting statement, however, may still say little: “This study contributes to the literature on online learning,” “This research adds to existing knowledge,” or “The findings provide new insights into artificial intelligence in education.”
These statements identify a general area of contribution, but they leave an important question unanswered: What, exactly, does the study add?
The opposite problem is possible too. A contribution claim can become so narrowly tied to a particular sample, variable combination, or isolated result that the reader cannot see why it matters beyond the immediate study. Finding the right level of specificity means identifying the actual intellectual addition while keeping the claim proportionate to the evidence.

A Contribution Claim Should Identify What Changed
In Brief
A research contribution claim should be specific enough for the reader to identify what the study adds relative to existing knowledge, methodology, or practice, but no broader than the evidence can justify.
A useful claim usually identifies the prior limitation or understanding, the particular addition made by the study, and why that addition changes what can reasonably be understood, investigated, or done. The exact wording and level of detail will vary by discipline and type of contribution.
03 · What You Need to Know
The Right Level of Specificity Sits Between a Topic and an Overclaim
A contribution claim is not merely a declaration that research is new. It is an argument about how the completed study changes the state of knowledge, research capability, or practice.
This distinction matters because originality alone does not fully establish contribution. In their discussion of theoretical contribution, Corley and Gioia distinguish originality from utility, while Whetten's influential treatment asks authors to establish what is new and why the change matters. These frameworks concern theoretical scholarship in management, so they should not be treated as universal rules for every discipline. The underlying lesson is nevertheless useful more broadly: novelty becomes meaningful as a contribution when the researcher can identify the value added by the change.
“This Study Contributes to the Literature” Is Usually Too Vague
Consider the statement:
This study contributes to the literature on generative AI in higher education.
It tells the reader where the study belongs, but not what has changed because the study exists. Did it identify a previously undocumented behavior? Challenge an established assumption? Establish a boundary condition? Improve a measurement method? Provide evidence for a decision?
A more informative claim might be:
This study provides evidence that students' willingness to use AI-generated feedback depends not only on perceived usefulness but also on whether they trust the feedback sufficiently to act on it.
Now the reader can inspect the claimed addition and ask whether the evidence actually supports it.
Specificity Begins With a Point of Comparison
Contribution is relational. You cannot adequately explain what a study adds without some account of what existed before it.
This is why the research gap and research contribution need to be distinguished but connected . The gap describes an absence, limitation, uncertainty, contradiction, or unresolved problem in existing knowledge or practice. The contribution describes what the completed research adds in relation to that starting point.
Before the study What was known, assumed, uncertain, unavailable, or methodologically limited?
The study adds What specific evidence, explanation, method, clarification, or practically relevant knowledge has been produced?
As a result What can researchers or relevant stakeholders understand, investigate, interpret, or decide differently?
You do not necessarily need to write a contribution statement using these exact three parts. They are diagnostic questions for determining whether the claim contains enough information.
Specify the Change, Not Every Detail of the Study
Specificity does not mean reproducing the results section. A contribution statement normally does not need every coefficient, demographic characteristic, instrument, procedural detail, or statistical result.
The goal is to identify the meaningful change at the appropriate level of abstraction.

Specificity Depends on the Type of Contribution
The details needed in the claim depend partly on the type of contribution being made .
A theoretical claim should identify what conceptual relationship, explanation, mechanism, assumption, or boundary condition is changed. Whetten's framework is useful here because it distinguishes changes involving what factors matter, how they relate, why the relationships occur, and the conditions under which theoretical propositions apply.
An empirical contribution claim should identify what meaningful evidence has been added. A methodological claim should specify what researchers can measure, analyze, investigate, or evaluate differently or better. A practical contribution should identify the decision, action, intervention, policy, design, or professional practice that the evidence can reasonably inform.
The Scope of the Claim Should Follow the Scope of the Evidence
Specificity also requires boundaries. Who or what was studied? Under what conditions? What kind of evidence was produced? Which inferences does the design permit?
Those considerations affect how broadly the contribution can be stated. An intensive study of one organizational setting may reveal an important process, for example, without establishing that the process operates identically across all organizations. An experiment may provide strong evidence about a particular causal relationship under the studied conditions without establishing every mechanism through which the effect occurs.
Editorial guidance in the Academy of Management Journal has similarly cautioned that questions and theoretical ambitions can become broader than the data can sustain. Although those recommendations arise from a particular disciplinary context, the underlying principle is widely useful: contribution claims should be calibrated to what the research design and evidence can actually establish.
Being Specific Does Not Mean Making the Contribution Sound Small
Researchers sometimes keep claims vague because precision seems less impressive. Usually, the opposite happens. A specific contribution gives readers something substantive to evaluate.
Compare “This research extends existing theory” with “The findings suggest that the proposed relationship reverses when organizational support falls below a critical condition.” The second claim is narrower in wording but potentially more intellectually consequential because it identifies what existing understanding must be reconsidered.
The contribution's importance should therefore come from what it changes, not from adjectives such as major , novel , groundbreaking , or transformative .
04 · A Practical Example
From a Vague Contribution Claim to a Defensible One
Hypothetical Example
A study of AI-generated feedback and student revision
Suppose researchers compare how university students respond to AI-generated formative feedback. They find that feedback specificity predicts substantive revision only among students who critically evaluate the recommendations rather than accepting them automatically.
Too vague “This study contributes to the growing literature on AI feedback in education.”
Still incomplete “This study contributes by identifying critical evaluation as an important factor in AI-supported writing.”
More specific “The study provides evidence that specific AI-generated feedback does not uniformly produce substantive revision; its association with revision depends on whether students critically evaluate the feedback before acting on it.”
Potential overclaim “This study establishes a new model explaining how university students learn from artificial intelligence.”
The more specific version identifies what the evidence adds without pretending that one study has explained the entire phenomenon. Whether even that wording is justified would still depend on the design, measures, analysis, prior literature, and results of the hypothetical study.
This exercise also shows why contribution claims are not simply descriptions of findings. A useful claim interprets the finding relative to existing knowledge while remaining within the boundaries of what the evidence permits.
06 · What This Means for You
Write the Contribution So a Reader Can Test the Claim
A useful test is to give your contribution statement to a knowledgeable reader and ask: “Based only on this sentence or paragraph, can you tell me what this study changes?”
If the reader can identify only the topic, your claim is probably too vague. If the reader sees a sweeping conclusion that would require much more evidence than your study provides, it is probably too broad.
A simple decision framework
If the claim names only the literature or topic
Add the specific knowledge, explanation, capability, or practically relevant insight produced by the study.
If the claim simply repeats a result
Explain what that result changes relative to prior knowledge.
If the claim contains sweeping language
Narrow it until every important part can be defended from the study and relevant literature.
If the claim becomes a miniature results section
Move up one level of abstraction and state the meaningful addition rather than every supporting detail.
Then compare the wording with the evidence one final time. Ask whether another researcher could reasonably challenge any implied generalization, causal inference, theoretical advance, methodological superiority, or practical recommendation.
This process helps prevent a claim from becoming either too weak or too broad . It also provides a useful safeguard against overselling what the study contributes .

Is Your Contribution Claim Specific Enough?
Before finalizing the claim, check:
Does the claim state what the research actually adds rather than merely naming the topic?
Is the point of comparison with previous knowledge, methodology, or practice clear?
Can a reader identify what is different after this study?
Does the claim explain the contribution rather than simply repeat a result?
Have I included the boundaries necessary to prevent an unjustified generalization?
Have I removed methodological or statistical details that do not help identify the contribution?
Does the wording match the type of contribution I am actually making?
Can every consequential part of the claim be defended with evidence and relevant literature?
