Can One Study Make More Than One Kind of Contribution?

One study can make several kinds of research contribution, but identifying multiple contributions does not mean treating every finding or implication as equally important. Learn how to distinguish, connect, and prioritize them.

01 · The Question

Can the Same Study Contribute in Several Different Ways?

Your study produces an important empirical finding. That finding also changes how an existing theory should be understood. You developed a measurement procedure along the way, and the results have implications for professional practice. Does that mean the study has four contributions?

Possibly. Research contributions are not mutually exclusive categories. A study can add evidence, change theoretical understanding, advance a method, and inform practice at the same time. Indeed, published scholarship sometimes explicitly discusses multiple sources of added value.

The difficulty is not establishing that multiple contributions are possible. It is deciding which claimed contributions are genuinely supported, how they relate to one another, and which represents the study's central addition. Otherwise, a contribution statement can become a catalogue of everything that happened during the research.

Yes, but the Contributions Should Be Distinct and Defensible

In Brief

Yes. One study can make more than one kind of research contribution, including theoretical, empirical, methodological, and practical contributions, when each claim represents a distinct and defensible addition supported by the study.

The contributions do not need to be equally important. A paper will often benefit from identifying its primary contribution and then explaining any meaningful secondary contributions rather than presenting every finding, methodological choice, or implication as a separate contribution.

03 · What You Need to Know

Multiple Contributions Are Possible Because Research Adds Value in Different Ways

The categories used to describe different types of research contribution answer different questions. An empirical contribution concerns what new evidence becomes available. A theoretical contribution concerns what changes in conceptualization or explanation. A methodological contribution concerns what changes in the capacity to conduct or evaluate research. A practical contribution concerns what knowledge becomes available for action or decision-making.

Because those dimensions are different, a single research project can affect several of them.

Bergh and colleagues explicitly distinguish methodological works in which the methodological advancement is the sole source of added value from empirical studies in which methodological contribution appears alongside other contributions. Similarly, scholarship in information systems has discussed research as potentially making multiple contributions of different kinds, while emphasizing that the contributions and their implications should be articulated systematically.

Multiple Contributions Do Not Mean Multiple Unrelated Claims

The strongest multiple-contribution arguments usually form a coherent chain. An empirical discovery may change a theoretical explanation. A methodological innovation may make that discovery possible. The resulting knowledge may have practical implications.

Those contributions can be distinct while remaining connected to the same central research problem.

Methodological advance A better way of measuring or investigating the phenomenon becomes available.
Empirical advance Using that capability reveals evidence that was previously unavailable or inadequately established.
Theoretical advance The evidence gives researchers reason to revise, extend, qualify, or reconsider an explanation.
Practical relevance The resulting knowledge provides a stronger basis for a decision, intervention, policy, design, or professional action.

This sequence is only an illustration. Studies do not need to follow it, nor do they need to make all four contributions.

Primary and Secondary Contributions Can Differ in Importance

Recognizing several contributions does not require treating them as equivalent. One may provide the principal justification for the study, while others emerge as important consequences or by-products.

Suppose a study develops and extensively validates a new analytical method, then demonstrates it using a substantive dataset. The methodological advancement may be primary, while the empirical finding from the demonstration is secondary. Another study may introduce only a modest methodological adaptation but use it to generate evidence that substantially changes theoretical understanding. In that case, the theoretical or empirical contribution may be more central.

Primary contribution The central addition that most directly explains what the study changes and why the research matters.
Secondary contribution A meaningful additional advance produced by the study that is supported by the work but is not its principal source of added value.

A Finding Is Not Automatically a Separate Contribution

Studies commonly generate numerous results. If a paper reports seven statistically significant relationships, that does not necessarily mean it makes seven empirical contributions. Several findings may collectively support one larger contribution.

The same principle applies elsewhere. Using three analytical techniques does not create three methodological contributions. Listing implications for students, teachers, and administrators does not automatically create three practical contributions. Contribution concerns the meaningful addition made relative to existing knowledge or capability, not the number of outputs the study produces.

This is why it is important to understand when a research finding actually counts as a contribution.

Contribution Type and Contribution Strength Are Separate Questions

A study might genuinely have theoretical, empirical, and practical contributions while making only a modest methodological contribution. The existence of several categories says nothing about how strong each contribution is.

Ask two separate questions: What kind of contribution is this? and How consequential is it?

This distinction prevents an easy mistake: assuming that a paper claiming four contribution types must somehow be stronger than one claiming only one. A single substantial contribution can be more important than several minor ones.

Different Disciplines May Organize Contribution Differently

Theoretical, empirical, methodological, and practical contributions are useful analytical categories, but they are not a universal taxonomy imposed identically across all research fields. Disciplines and journals may recognize other categories, use different terminology, combine categories, or place different emphasis on particular forms of contribution.

For example, information systems scholarship has discussed artefactual contributions alongside theoretical and empirical contributions, while methodological journals may foreground advancement of research methodology itself. Literature reviews may contribute through synthesis, evaluation of accumulated knowledge, theory development, methodological insight, or agendas for future research.

Use the vocabulary appropriate to your field and publication venue rather than forcing every study into a predetermined set of labels.

04 · A Practical Example

How One Study Could Make Several Contributions Without Claiming Everything

Hypothetical Example

Understanding when AI-generated feedback improves student revision

Imagine researchers investigating whether AI-generated formative feedback improves university students' revision of academic writing. They develop a validated procedure for distinguishing superficial revisions from substantive revisions, conduct an experiment comparing feedback conditions, and find that AI feedback improves substantive revision only when students critically evaluate the feedback rather than accepting it automatically.

The Empirical Contribution

The study provides evidence that the effect of AI-generated feedback is conditional rather than uniform. The important empirical addition is not merely that some students improved. It is evidence about the conditions associated with that improvement.

The Theoretical Contribution

Suppose existing explanations largely assume that useful feedback improves performance through exposure to better information. The findings may support a refinement: access to feedback alone is insufficient, and active evaluation of the feedback may be an important part of the explanatory process. If the evidence and theoretical argument support that change, the study may also make a theoretical contribution.

The Methodological Contribution

If the procedure for distinguishing superficial from substantive revision addresses an important measurement problem and is rigorously evaluated, it may constitute a methodological contribution. If researchers merely created a coding sheet for this particular project without establishing broader methodological value, calling it a methodological contribution would be harder to justify.

The Practical Contribution

The evidence might inform how educators design AI-supported writing activities. Rather than encouraging students simply to obtain AI feedback, instruction might emphasize critical evaluation before revision. That practical claim should remain proportionate to the population, setting, intervention, and outcomes actually studied.

The paper could therefore have several defensible contributions, but they arise from different parts of the same argument. The researchers should still decide which one best captures the study's central advance rather than giving all four equal billing by default.

Common Mistakes When Claiming Multiple Contributions

Misconception

Does Claiming More Contributions Make a Study Stronger?

No. Contribution is not a counting exercise. Four weak claims do not necessarily make a stronger paper than one substantial claim. Adding marginal contributions can dilute the central argument and make it harder for readers to understand what the study actually changes.

Misconception

Is Every Important Finding a Separate Contribution?

No. Several findings may collectively establish one contribution. Separate them only when they genuinely add different knowledge rather than representing different pieces of evidence supporting the same advance.

Misconception

Does Using a Novel Method Automatically Add a Methodological Contribution?

No. Methodological novelty and methodological contribution are different. The study must establish what the method improves, enables, corrects, or clarifies. A methodological improvement can even become the main contribution, but only when the methodological advance itself is sufficiently consequential and supported.

Misconception

Must Every Empirical Study Also Claim a Theoretical Contribution?

No. An empirical study can provide valuable evidence without substantially changing theory. Forcing a theoretical claim may lead researchers to describe routine theoretical consistency as theory development. Contribution expectations vary among disciplines and publication venues.

Should All Contributions Receive Equal Space in the Paper?

Not necessarily. The amount of attention should reflect their importance and the evidence available. The central contribution normally deserves the clearest development, while secondary contributions can be explained proportionately.

06 · What This Means for You

Build a Contribution Hierarchy Rather Than a Contribution Inventory

When your study appears to make several contributions, begin by writing each one as a separate claim. Then ask what changed relative to prior knowledge or practice and what evidence in your study supports that change.

This helps prevent confusion between the gap that motivated the study and the contribution produced by it. It also makes unsupported secondary claims easier to spot.

A simple decision framework

If several findings all establish the same substantive advance
Present them as evidence for one contribution rather than artificially multiplying the contribution count.
If two claims change genuinely different dimensions of knowledge or research capability
They may reasonably be presented as separate contributions.
If one contribution provides the main reason the study matters
Present it as the primary contribution and organize secondary contributions around it.
If a supposed contribution cannot be supported independently
Treat it as a finding, implication, methodological feature, or future possibility rather than forcing a contribution claim.

Then make each surviving claim appropriately specific. Saying that a study “contributes theoretically, empirically, methodologically, and practically” gives the reader labels but not the contributions themselves. Explain what changed in each case. The appropriate level of precision depends partly on how specific the contribution claim needs to be.

Finally, check whether the contribution story remains coherent. Multiple contributions should illuminate the study's value, not make the paper appear to be four manuscripts sharing a dataset. Academic papers already have enough identity crises without giving the contribution section one too.

Before Claiming Multiple Contributions, Check Each One

Before presenting multiple contributions, check:
Can I state each claimed contribution as a specific addition rather than merely naming its category?
Does each contribution differ meaningfully from the others?
Can I identify the prior knowledge, capability, or practice against which each contribution is being claimed?
Does the study provide sufficient evidence for each claim?
Have I distinguished contributions from findings, methods used, implications, and recommendations?
Can I identify which contribution is primary if one clearly carries most of the study's added value?
Do the secondary contributions strengthen the central contribution story rather than distract from it?
Have I removed claims that would make the study's contribution too weak or too broad?

Questions About Making More Than One Research Contribution

How many contributions can one research paper have?

There is no universal maximum. The useful limit is determined by what the study genuinely supports and what can be communicated coherently. A paper should not manufacture additional contributions simply to increase their number.

Does a paper need one primary contribution?

Not as an absolute rule, but identifying a primary contribution is often useful because it clarifies the paper's central added value. Some studies may have two closely connected contributions of comparable importance, while others have a clear primary contribution accompanied by secondary ones.

Can a study have both empirical and theoretical contributions?

Yes. New evidence can itself be an empirical contribution and can also provide grounds for changing, extending, qualifying, or challenging a theoretical explanation. The paper should explain these as distinct claims rather than assuming that new evidence automatically produces theoretical contribution.

Can a study have methodological and practical contributions at the same time?

Yes. A methodological advance might improve how researchers investigate a problem while the knowledge generated through the study also informs practice. Each contribution still needs its own justification.

Should I list every contribution in the abstract?

That depends on the journal, article type, available space, and importance of the contributions. The abstract should communicate the study's central added value clearly. Secondary contributions need not be crowded into it merely because they are discussed elsewhere in the paper.

What if I planned one contribution but discovered another?

That can happen. The contribution a study ultimately makes is not always identical to the contribution anticipated when the research was designed. The final claim should reflect what the completed evidence supports rather than preserving the original claim simply because it appeared in the proposal.

The Bottom Line

One study can make multiple research contributions when each represents a distinct, meaningful, and adequately supported addition to knowledge, methodology, or practice.

Do not judge the strength of a study by the number of contribution labels it can accumulate. Identify what the research genuinely changes, distinguish the primary contribution from meaningful secondary ones when appropriate, and keep every claim proportionate to the evidence.
