Should Importance Matter More Than Feasibility When Choosing Between Ideas?

An important question is not automatically the best project if you cannot investigate it rigorously, but feasibility alone should not push you toward trivial questions. The better choice usually depends on whether the more important contribution remains realistically achievable.

01 · The Question

What If the Most Important Research Idea Is Also the Hardest to Do?

Imagine choosing between two worthwhile research ideas. One addresses a consequential unresolved problem, but recruitment will be difficult, data collection expensive, and completion uncertain. The other addresses a narrower question that you can answer well with the participants, data, expertise, and time already available.

Which should matter more: the importance of the question or the feasibility of actually answering it?

The tension is real because both characteristics matter. Established approaches to research-question development include relevance alongside feasibility, while major research funders assess both the importance of proposed research and whether the proposed methods are rigorous and achievable. Neither dimension makes much sense in complete isolation from the other.

Importance Should Guide Ambition, but Feasibility Sets a Real Boundary

In Brief

Importance should not automatically matter more than feasibility when choosing between research ideas because a potentially important question creates little research value if you cannot investigate it with sufficient rigor to produce credible evidence.

At the same time, feasibility should not become a preference for whatever is easiest. A more difficult idea may be worth choosing when its greater potential contribution justifies the additional challenge and there remains a credible path to completing the study well.

03 · What You Need to Know

Why Importance and Feasibility Need to Be Judged Together

Importance Asks Whether the Research Is Worth Doing

An important research question addresses something consequential enough to justify investigation. Depending on the field, it might address a substantial knowledge gap, test an influential assumption, resolve contradictory evidence, improve a method, inform practice or policy, or generate knowledge needed for further research.

Importance should not be confused with the size or popularity of a topic. A narrow question can be important if answering it would meaningfully change understanding or decisions. Conversely, a study can concern a socially prominent subject while making only a minor contribution.

The U.S. National Institutes of Health currently evaluates the importance of proposed research by considering significance and innovation. Reviewers examine whether a project addresses an important knowledge gap, solves a critical problem, or creates a valuable conceptual or technical advance. Innovation can contribute to importance, but NIH explicitly recognizes that research without highly novel concepts or approaches may still be critically important.

Feasibility Asks Whether the Research Can Be Done Well

Feasibility concerns whether you can translate the question into a study capable of producing credible evidence. The FINER framework identifies feasibility as a core characteristic of a worthwhile research question, alongside interest, novelty, ethics, and relevance.

Depending on the project, feasibility may depend on participant availability, data access, technical expertise, funding, equipment, institutional support, permissions, collaborators, manageable scope, and sufficient time.

NIH similarly separates “Importance of the Research” from “Rigor and Feasibility” in its current simplified peer-review framework. Its feasibility assessment asks whether the proposed approach is sound and achievable and, when feasibility is uncertain, whether that uncertainty is balanced by the potential for major advances.

That last qualification matters. Feasibility is not synonymous with certainty.

Feasible Does Not Mean Easy

A project can be difficult and still feasible. Recruiting a specialized population may take considerable effort, a longitudinal study may require years of follow-up, and an unfamiliar analytical method may require additional training or collaboration. None of those conditions automatically makes the idea a poor choice.

Difficult research Requires substantial effort, resources, expertise, coordination, or uncertainty but still has a credible path to rigorous completion.
Infeasible research Cannot realistically be completed to an adequate scientific standard under the available conditions, even if the underlying question remains valuable.

That distinction prevents feasibility from becoming an intellectual excuse for choosing only safe projects.

Importance Does Not Rescue an Unworkable Study

Suppose a question is exceptionally important, but you cannot recruit an adequate sample, obtain the necessary measurements, access the relevant records, or use a design capable of answering it. The importance of the question remains intact. What becomes weak is the proposed study.

This distinction is easy to miss. Researchers sometimes treat criticism of feasibility as criticism of the question itself. Yet an excellent question can be paired with an inadequate project.

If feasibility problems would materially undermine the evidence, choosing the project because the question is important may result in a study incapable of supporting the conclusions that motivated it.

Feasibility Does Not Rescue an Unimportant Study Either

The reverse problem is equally important. Available data, easy recruitment, familiar methods, and short timelines can make a project attractive. None establishes that the resulting knowledge will matter.

A question should not exist merely because the data happen to be accessible. Before choosing the easier option, ask what contribution the completed study would make and whether that contribution justifies the resources required to produce it.

This is one reason better access to data should influence but not automatically determine which question you pursue.

The Real Comparison Is Expected Contribution Under Realistic Conditions

Rather than comparing abstract importance with abstract feasibility, consider the contribution each project can realistically deliver.

An extremely important question with only a remote chance of producing interpretable evidence may have less expected value than a moderately important question that can be investigated exceptionally well. Yet a difficult project with a plausible path to a major contribution may deserve priority over an easy study whose findings would add little.

This is why the broader decision about which research idea is strongest overall cannot be reduced to whichever candidate maximizes one attribute.

Some Feasibility Problems Can Be Changed

Feasibility should not always be treated as a fixed characteristic of an idea. Sometimes the obstacle can be addressed.

A missing analytical skill may be supplied by a collaborator. An overly ambitious design may be narrowed. A difficult recruitment target may become manageable through additional sites. An expensive measurement strategy may have a defensible alternative.

Before rejecting an important idea, ask whether the feasibility constraint is intrinsic to the question or merely a feature of the current design.

Identify the constraint. What specifically makes the study difficult?
Estimate its consequence. Does it increase effort, or does it threaten the validity or completion of the study?
Look for a remedy. Could redesign, collaboration, additional resources, narrower scope, or preliminary work address it?
Reassess the idea. Compare the revised project rather than rejecting the original question solely because its first design was impractical.

Your Context Changes the Feasibility Side of the Equation

Feasibility is partly relational: feasible for whom, where, and when?

A multicenter study may be unrealistic for an individual master's student but entirely plausible for an established consortium. A computational project requiring specialized infrastructure may be straightforward in one institution and prohibitively difficult in another.

UK Research and Innovation similarly evaluates whether a proposed approach is feasible, whether delivery risks are identified and managed, and how the research environment contributes to successful completion. It also considers whether the applicant or team has the capability to deliver the proposed work.

The same research question can therefore remain important while becoming more or less feasible as circumstances change.

Sometimes the Right Decision Is Not Yet

If an important idea cannot currently be investigated well, the choice is not necessarily between doing a compromised version now and abandoning it forever.

You may first conduct a pilot study, develop a method, establish collaboration, obtain access, build a dataset, or seek funding. In other cases, it may be more sensible to pursue another worthwhile project while deliberately preserving the more demanding idea for a later study.

Timing is part of research judgment. “Not feasible now” and “not worth pursuing” are very different conclusions.

Choosing Between a More Important Study and a More Feasible One

Hypothetical Example

Two studies of AI-supported learning

Suppose a researcher is deciding between two hypothetical projects. Idea A investigates whether an AI-supported intervention improves learning among students who are poorly represented in the existing literature. The question could make a substantial contribution, but the researcher currently has access to only one small site. Idea B examines patterns of AI use in a large existing institutional dataset. The question is narrower, but the necessary data are immediately available.

Choosing Idea A solely because it is more important would be premature. Choosing Idea B solely because the dataset already exists would be equally mechanical.

First: The researcher estimates whether Idea A can recruit enough appropriate participants to support its intended design.
Second: The researcher explores whether additional sites or collaborators could make recruitment realistic.
Third: If recruitment becomes credible, Idea A's greater expected contribution may justify the additional difficulty.
Alternatively: If adequate recruitment remains unrealistic, Idea B may be the stronger project now, while Idea A is retained until the necessary research conditions exist.

The decision changes because feasibility determines whether the potential importance of Idea A can plausibly be converted into a defensible study.

Common Mistakes When Balancing Importance and Feasibility

Misconception

The Most Important Question Should Always Win

Importance describes why answering the question matters. It does not guarantee that the proposed study can answer it. If feasibility problems undermine rigor or completion, the expected contribution may be much smaller than the question's theoretical importance suggests.

Misconception

The Most Feasible Idea Is the Safest Choice

It may be the easiest choice, but that is different. High feasibility cannot compensate indefinitely for low scientific value. Ask whether the knowledge produced would justify doing the study at all.

A Difficult Project Is an Infeasible Project

Difficulty concerns effort and challenge. Infeasibility concerns whether adequate execution is realistically possible. Important research may reasonably require more effort when the potential contribution warrants it.

Feasibility Is Fixed Once You Have an Idea

Many constraints can change through redesign, collaboration, training, additional sites, funding, or a narrower scope. Evaluate whether the obstacle belongs to the question itself or merely to your current implementation plan.

06 · What This Means for You

Choose the Most Important Question You Can Realistically Investigate Well

A useful starting principle is to resist both extremes. Do not pursue importance without a credible execution path, and do not pursue feasibility without a meaningful contribution.

A simple decision framework

If the more important idea is difficult but clearly achievable
Its larger potential contribution may justify the additional effort.
If feasibility is uncertain but the potential advance is substantial
Investigate the uncertainty and consider whether it can be managed before rejecting the idea.
If feasibility problems would seriously compromise rigor
Redesign, postpone, or reconsider the project rather than relying on the importance of the question to justify weak evidence.
If the easier idea makes only a trivial contribution
Do not choose it merely because completion is predictable.
If both options remain defensible
Compare their expected contributions, uncertainties, resources, timing, and other relevant criteria for choosing between research ideas.

The practical goal is not maximum importance regardless of cost or maximum feasibility regardless of value. It is a study whose worthwhile contribution you have a credible chance of delivering rigorously.

Before Trading Importance Against Feasibility

Before choosing between the ideas, check:
What specific contribution makes the more important question important?
What specifically makes the idea less feasible?
Would the feasibility problem merely increase effort, or would it compromise rigor or completion?
Can collaboration, redesign, additional resources, preliminary work, or narrower scope reduce the feasibility problem?
Does the more feasible alternative still make a contribution substantial enough to justify the study?
Have you verified major assumptions about data, recruitment, expertise, permissions, funding, and time?
Are you comparing what each project can realistically contribute rather than comparing importance and feasibility as isolated labels?

Questions About Research Importance and Feasibility

Should I always choose the more important research question?

No. Greater importance strengthens the case for a project, but you still need a credible way to investigate the question rigorously. If the proposed study cannot produce adequate evidence, consider redesigning or postponing it.

Does feasibility mean choosing an easy research topic?

No. Feasibility means that a study can realistically be conducted well with appropriate participants or data, expertise, resources, methods, and time. A feasible study can still be demanding.

How much uncertainty is acceptable?

There is no universal threshold. Consider what is uncertain, how likely it is to disrupt the study, whether the risk can be managed, and whether the potential contribution justifies accepting that uncertainty.

Should a doctoral student prioritize feasibility more heavily?

Completion constraints may make feasibility particularly consequential in a time-bounded doctoral project, but the research still needs a defensible contribution. The appropriate balance depends on the program, resources, supervisory support, design, and question.

Can a pilot study make an important idea more feasible?

Sometimes. A pilot or feasibility study may help assess recruitment, procedures, measurements, technical processes, or other uncertainties before committing to a larger study. Whether this is appropriate depends on what makes the main project uncertain.

What if an important idea is simply not feasible right now?

Preserve it if the question remains worthwhile. Identify what would need to change, such as access, funding, expertise, preliminary evidence, or collaboration, and reconsider it when those conditions improve.

Importance Matters Only If You Can Convert It Into Credible Research

The Bottom Line

Importance should not automatically outweigh feasibility: choose a research idea whose potential contribution is worth pursuing and whose study can realistically be conducted with sufficient rigor to deliver that contribution.

A harder project may deserve priority when its greater value justifies the challenge and the obstacles are manageable. When feasibility would seriously undermine the study, redesigning or postponing an important idea is usually more defensible than producing weak evidence simply because the question matters.
