Should Originality Matter More Than Practical Relevance?

Originality and practical relevance contribute different kinds of value to research, and neither should automatically dominate. A useful choice asks what is genuinely new, who could benefit from knowing it, and whether either advantage produces a meaningful contribution.

01 · The Question

Would You Rather Study Something New or Something Useful?

Suppose you are choosing between two research ideas. One is highly original: few researchers have examined the question, and the study could open an unfamiliar line of inquiry. The other is less novel but addresses a problem that practitioners, institutions, communities, or policymakers are currently trying to solve.

Should originality win because research is supposed to generate new knowledge? Or should practical relevance matter more because research ought to be useful?

The choice is more complicated than either position suggests. Originality and practical relevance describe different qualities of research. They can reinforce each other, but they can also pull a project in different directions.

02 · The Short Answer

Neither Originality nor Practical Relevance Should Automatically Win

In Brief

Originality should not automatically matter more than practical relevance, nor should practical relevance automatically outweigh originality; the stronger research idea is the one whose particular form of novelty and relevance supports the more meaningful contribution.

Some research is valuable because it changes understanding without having an immediate application, while other research is valuable because it rigorously addresses an important practical problem even when its conceptual novelty is modest. Judge what the originality adds and what the practical relevance could actually change.

03 · What You Need to Know

Originality and Practical Relevance Answer Different Questions

Originality Asks What the Research Adds That Is New

Originality concerns how a proposed study differs meaningfully from existing knowledge. That difference might lie in the question, explanation, theory, method, evidence, population, context, comparison, dataset, or application.

But originality should not be reduced to being first.

The FINER framework describes novelty broadly: a worthwhile research question may confirm, refute, or extend previous findings. This matters because replication, extension, validation, and testing established claims under different conditions can contribute knowledge even when the broad topic has already been studied.

Likewise, the U.S. National Institutes of Health evaluates innovation as part of the importance of proposed research but explicitly states that a project not using novel concepts or approaches may nevertheless be critically important to the field.

The useful question is therefore not simply “Has anyone done this before?” but “What will this study add that we do not adequately know already?”

Practical Relevance Asks Whether the Knowledge Could Matter to Decisions or Action

Practical relevance concerns the relationship between research and consequential problems outside the immediate production of scholarly knowledge. Depending on the field, the relevant users might include educators, clinicians, engineers, organizations, communities, governments, designers, or other practitioners.

UK Research and Innovation, for example, asks applicants to explain not only how proposed work may advance understanding and generate new knowledge but also its potential impact on research, society, the economy, or the environment. Its assessment framework also considers how research outputs may be translated into outcomes and impacts.

Practical relevance can therefore strengthen the rationale for a study. Yet a practical problem does not automatically produce a good research question. The study still needs an appropriate design and a contribution that extends beyond merely documenting that a problem exists.

Research Can Be Important Without Immediate Practical Application

Some research seeks primarily to explain, describe, theorize, discover, or establish fundamental knowledge. Its practical consequences may be distant, indirect, unpredictable, or initially unknown.

Judging such work mainly by immediate applicability would undervalue research whose contribution is conceptual or foundational. A study can advance understanding substantially even when researchers cannot yet specify how a practitioner will use the result next Monday morning.

That is one reason practical relevance should not become a universal requirement that every study demonstrate immediate utility.

Research Can Be Valuable Without Radical Originality

The opposite error is assuming that a practically important study becomes scientifically uninteresting once similar work exists.

Previous findings may require confirmation. An intervention may need testing under conditions that differ meaningfully from the original study. A measurement instrument may need validation for another population. Evidence may be inconsistent, outdated, contextually narrow, or inadequate for an important decision.

In those circumstances, the contribution lies not in inventing an entirely new subject but in producing evidence that resolves a genuine uncertainty.

Originality Concerns what the study adds, changes, tests, extends, or approaches differently relative to existing knowledge.
Practical relevance Concerns whether the knowledge addresses a consequential real-world problem, decision, practice, policy, or need.

Novelty Without Importance Can Be Trivial

A question can be new simply because nobody previously considered it worth investigating. That possibility is less flattering than the familiar claim that an untouched topic must represent a research gap.

Novelty therefore requires a second question: why would knowing the answer matter?

An unusual population, technology, setting, or variable does not automatically create a meaningful contribution. If the only justification for a study is that the exact combination has apparently not appeared in the literature, the idea may be original in a literal sense while remaining scientifically weak.

This is why comparing research ideas across several relevant criteria is more informative than treating novelty as a sufficient condition.

Practical Relevance Without a Knowledge Contribution Can Be Equally Weak

A serious real-world problem deserves attention, but not every study concerning that problem necessarily contributes useful research.

Suppose an institution wants to know whether students like a newly introduced learning platform. The issue may be practically relevant to local decision-making. Yet a small descriptive satisfaction survey may have limited research contribution unless the question, design, evidence, and interpretation address something that extends beyond routine evaluation.

Practical usefulness and research contribution overlap, but they are not identical.

The Best Trade-Off Depends on the Kind of Contribution You Are Trying to Make

For some projects, conceptual novelty is central. A study intended to challenge a prevailing theory may reasonably prioritize originality. For an applied project intended to inform an urgent decision, practical relevance may deserve greater weight.

Neither priority becomes a universal hierarchy.

When choosing among several worthwhile research ideas, ask what success would look like for each one. Would success change what the field understands? Would it improve a consequential decision? Would it establish whether an influential finding holds under conditions where the answer matters? Different projects can create legitimate value through different routes.

Originality and Practical Relevance Are Often Not Opposites

The apparent trade-off may disappear when an idea is refined.

A practically important problem may contain an unresolved mechanism, comparison, population, or methodological challenge that creates genuine originality. Likewise, a highly original theoretical idea may have implications for a practical problem that were not initially obvious.

Before choosing between novelty and usefulness, ask whether the two candidate ideas are genuinely in conflict or whether better question formulation could preserve the strongest features of both.

Do Not Confuse Practical Relevance With Publication Potential

A topic may be fashionable in journals without being especially consequential to practice. Conversely, an important local or professional problem may have substantial practical value while attracting less attention from prestigious publication venues.

If publication considerations are influencing the choice, treat them explicitly rather than disguising them as relevance. Whether publication potential should break a tie between research ideas is a separate strategic question.

Feasibility Still Matters

A highly original question and a practically important question both need to become defensible studies. If either requires evidence, expertise, access, or resources you cannot realistically obtain, the comparison changes.

Research selection is therefore multidimensional. The choice between originality and practical relevance occurs within a larger assessment of scientific importance, ethics, methodological adequacy, feasibility, and expected contribution.

Choosing Between a More Original Idea and a More Practically Relevant One

Hypothetical Example

Two possible studies of generative AI in higher education

Suppose a researcher is considering two hypothetical studies. Idea A examines an underexplored cognitive mechanism involved when students collaborate with generative AI. It is conceptually original, but its immediate implications for teaching practice are uncertain. Idea B evaluates whether a widely adopted AI-supported feedback practice improves student revision quality. Similar interventions have been studied elsewhere, but the institution needs stronger evidence about whether the practice works under its conditions.

Neither idea wins simply by occupying the stronger column on its favored criterion.

For Idea A: The researcher examines whether the proposed mechanism would materially extend or challenge existing explanations rather than being novel only because it has received little attention.
For Idea B: The researcher examines whether the study addresses a genuine uncertainty and is designed to produce knowledge beyond a simple report of local satisfaction or implementation.
Then: The researcher compares the contributions. Idea A may be stronger if its conceptual advance is substantial; Idea B may be stronger if the practical decision is consequential and existing evidence does not adequately answer it.

The appropriate choice depends on what each study would actually contribute, not on declaring originality or practical relevance inherently superior.

Common Mistakes When Comparing Novelty and Practical Usefulness

Misconception

If Nobody Has Studied It, It Must Be Original and Important

An unstudied question may represent an important opportunity, but absence from the literature does not establish significance. Ask why the missing knowledge matters and what answering the question would contribute.

Research Must Solve an Immediate Practical Problem to Be Valuable

Fundamental, theoretical, methodological, and exploratory research can make substantial contributions without immediate application. Practical relevance is one form of value, not the definition of research value itself.

Studying an Existing Question Is Not Original Research

Novelty can include confirming, refuting, or extending previous findings. A replication, extension, or new contextual test can be informative when it addresses a genuine uncertainty rather than merely repeating prior work without justification.

Practical importance provides a rationale for inquiry, but the study still needs a clear knowledge contribution, appropriate methods, and evidence capable of addressing the question.

Attention and relevance are different. A topic can attract substantial scholarly or public interest without addressing a consequential decision, need, or unresolved scientific problem.

06 · What This Means for You

Ask What the Novelty Adds and What the Relevance Could Change

If originality and practical relevance point toward different ideas, avoid deciding at the level of labels. Examine the actual contribution represented by each strength.

A simple decision framework

If an idea is highly original
Ask whether the novelty changes understanding, resolves uncertainty, improves methods, or opens a consequential line of inquiry.
If an idea is highly practically relevant
Ask whether the study will produce evidence capable of improving an important decision, practice, policy, or intervention.
If novelty is mostly a new population, setting, or technology
Determine whether that difference could reasonably change the answer or its interpretation.
If practical relevance is mostly local
Determine whether the project is intended as research, evaluation, or both, and articulate what knowledge contribution extends beyond the immediate operational need.
If both ideas make defensible contributions
Compare feasibility, methodological strength, uncertainty, personal interest, and strategic fit rather than forcing originality or relevance to decide the choice alone.

You may discover that the most productive question is not “Which matters more?” but “Which proposed study converts its particular strength into the more consequential contribution?”

07 · A Quick Checklist

Before Choosing Novelty Over Relevance, or Relevance Over Novelty

For each competing idea, check:
What exactly is original about the proposed study?
Does that originality create a meaningful knowledge contribution rather than merely a new combination of topic, population, or setting?
Who could plausibly use or benefit from the practically relevant findings?
What decision, practice, policy, intervention, or understanding could the findings realistically influence?
Does existing research already answer the practically relevant question adequately?
Could the original idea be refined to address a consequential practical problem without weakening its scientific purpose?
Could the practically relevant idea be reframed around an unresolved theoretical, empirical, or methodological question?
Are both ideas feasible, ethical, and methodologically capable of delivering the contributions you expect from them?
08 · Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About Originality and Practical Relevance

Does research have to be original?

Research should make a defensible contribution to knowledge, but originality does not necessarily mean studying something nobody has ever examined. Confirming, refuting, extending, or testing previous findings under meaningfully different conditions can also contribute new knowledge.

Is practical relevance required for good research?

Not necessarily in the sense of immediate application. Fundamental or theoretical research may be valuable primarily because it advances understanding. The type of relevance expected depends partly on the purpose and field of the research.

Is a new population enough to make a study original?

Not automatically. The population difference should have a plausible scientific reason to matter. Simply repeating a study with a different group may add little if there is no reason to expect the context to affect the phenomenon or interpretation.

Can replication research be original?

Replication can make a valuable contribution by testing the robustness, generalizability, or boundary conditions of previous findings. Its value depends on what uncertainty the replication addresses rather than on novelty understood simply as being first.

Should applied researchers prioritize practical relevance?

Practical relevance may reasonably receive substantial weight when the purpose of the research is explicitly applied. The study should still produce rigorous evidence and articulate a meaningful knowledge contribution rather than assuming that usefulness alone establishes research quality.

What if the more original idea is much riskier?

Consider the size of the potential contribution, the source and consequences of the uncertainty, and whether the risk can be managed. Greater originality does not automatically justify greater risk, but a potentially important advance may sometimes warrant accepting more uncertainty.

What if two ideas are equally strong scientifically?

Once the scientific comparison is genuinely close, secondary considerations can reasonably influence the decision. For example, personal interest may help distinguish otherwise comparable research ideas.

09 · The Bottom Line

Do Not Choose Novelty or Usefulness in the Abstract

The Bottom Line

Originality should not automatically outweigh practical relevance, and practical relevance should not automatically outweigh originality; choose the idea whose novelty, relevance, and other strengths combine to support the more meaningful and defensible contribution.

Ask what is genuinely new, why that new knowledge matters, what practical problem the alternative could actually help address, and whether either study can deliver its promised contribution rigorously. Often the strongest idea is not the one that maximizes one criterion but the one that makes its particular form of value consequential.
