How to Distinguish an Interesting Gap From an Important One
“Interesting” and “Important” Are Judgments, Not Formal Gap Categories
There is no universal research-gap taxonomy that formally divides all gaps into “interesting” and “important” categories. The distinction is better understood as a practical way to evaluate candidate research questions.
An interesting gap attracts intellectual attention. It may involve an unexpected pattern, a novel comparison, an unexplored setting, a theoretical puzzle, or simply a question that researchers would like answered.
An important gap has consequences. Resolving it could materially affect what researchers understand, what evidence supports, what decision-makers choose, how methods are used, what theories predict, or what happens to people and systems affected by the problem.
Research-prioritization frameworks make this distinction indirectly by evaluating unanswered questions according to criteria beyond novelty. AHRQ, for example, has discussed prioritizing research gaps using criteria including potential impact, foundational value, and timeliness. WHO likewise treats research prioritization as a process for identifying pressing areas on which limited research effort should focus rather than merely cataloguing unanswered questions.
A Gap Can Be Interesting Without Being Important
Imagine discovering that nobody has examined whether researchers who prefer one reference-management interface also prefer a particular type of document layout.
The question might be genuinely unanswered. You may even find the possible relationship intriguing. But unless there is some theoretical, methodological, or practical consequence attached to the answer, the gap may have limited importance.
This is not a criticism of curiosity. Exploratory research can reveal unexpected phenomena, and the importance of a finding is not always predictable in advance. The point is narrower: the fact that a question interests you does not itself establish a strong research justification.

An Important Gap Does Not Have to Be Dramatic
Importance does not mean that a study must solve a global crisis or transform an entire discipline.
A narrow uncertainty can be important if it affects a consequential conclusion. A missing comparison between two commonly used approaches may matter because organizations must choose between them. An uncertainty about a measurement instrument may matter because hundreds of subsequent studies depend on that measure. A small theoretical ambiguity may matter because it determines which of two explanations is plausible.
Importance is therefore relative to what depends on the answer, not to how dramatic the topic sounds.
Novelty Is One Reason a Question Can Be Interesting, but Novelty Is Not Importance
Novelty naturally attracts researchers. Being the first to investigate something can feel like an obvious contribution.
But novelty can be manufactured almost indefinitely. Change a country, narrow a population, combine variables that have never appeared together, use a different method, or collect data in a new year, and you may produce an exact study that has never been conducted.
The resulting question can be new without being consequential.
This is why the claim that “no one has studied this before” is not enough to establish a strong research gap. Novelty answers “Is this different?” Importance answers “Why does this difference matter?”
Importance Begins With the Consequence of Uncertainty
A useful way to evaluate a gap is to ask what happens because the answer is currently uncertain.
Does the uncertainty prevent researchers from distinguishing between competing explanations? Does it weaken confidence in an influential result? Does it make an important policy or practice decision harder? Does it prevent evidence from being applied to a population affected by the decision? Does it undermine a widely used measurement or method?
AHRQ's framework for research gaps distinguishes a research gap from a research need. In that framework, a gap exists where missing or inadequate information limits a conclusion, while research needs are areas where evidence gaps limit decision-making by patients, clinicians, or policymakers. The framework was developed for health evidence synthesis, but the underlying distinction illustrates why an unanswered question and an important research need are not automatically the same thing.
Importance Can Be Scientific Without Being Immediately Practical
It would be a mistake to define important research only as research with an immediate policy, commercial, clinical, or practical application.
Basic and theoretical research can be important because it changes how a phenomenon is understood, tests a foundational assumption, distinguishes competing theories, identifies a mechanism, establishes a boundary condition, develops a method, or provides knowledge on which later work depends.
AHRQ's discussion of research prioritization, for example, includes the potential to address foundational areas of research among possible criteria for prioritizing gaps. Foundational work can have value precisely because it enables future advances rather than producing an immediate intervention.
An Interesting Gap Can Become Important Once You Discover What Depends on It
Sometimes researchers begin with curiosity and only later recognize why the question matters.
Suppose you notice that two measurement approaches produce somewhat different results. Initially, that discrepancy is simply interesting. Further investigation reveals that both instruments are widely used interchangeably and that researchers routinely compare results obtained with them.
The gap has now acquired a more consequential dimension. If the measures are not comparable, conclusions across a substantial literature may need reinterpretation.
The underlying observation did not change. Your understanding of its consequences did.
An Important Gap Can Be Surprisingly Uninteresting on the Surface
The reverse can also happen.
A technical question about measurement error, missing data, coding, sampling, or an apparently minor methodological assumption may sound less exciting than investigating a novel phenomenon. Yet resolving it could improve hundreds of later studies.
Research importance should therefore not be judged by how compelling a project sounds in a title or conversation.
A useful test is whether the answer functions as a building block for other research. Foundational questions can have high value even when their immediate subject matter seems narrow.
Stakeholders May Judge Importance Differently From Researchers
Researchers are not the only people who can identify consequential uncertainties.
A scoping review of methods for identifying health research gaps, needs, and priorities found that importance to stakeholders was the most commonly applied prioritization criterion among the studies examined. Patients and the public were involved in more than half of the included priority-setting studies, alongside researchers and clinicians.
This finding comes from health research, but it illustrates a broader principle. Practitioners, communities, policymakers, educators, industry professionals, or other affected groups may identify consequences that are not obvious from the scholarly literature alone.
Stakeholder priorities do not automatically determine scientific importance, and different stakeholders may disagree. Their perspectives are nevertheless relevant when a proposed study claims practical or social significance.
Importance Depends Partly on Who Is Asking
A research gap can be highly important for one purpose and less important for another.
A local government may urgently need a prevalence estimate for planning services even if that estimate adds little to global theory. A theorist may care deeply about a boundary condition that has little immediate policy relevance. A research-methods community may prioritize a technical problem because many studies depend on it.
There is therefore no context-free importance score for every research gap.
What matters is making the criterion explicit: important to whom, for what purpose, and because of what consequence?
Importance Should Not Be Reduced to Popularity
A topic receiving considerable public, academic, or media attention is not automatically the most important research priority.
Popular topics can already be heavily researched, while less visible areas may contain consequential unanswered questions. Conversely, an obscure topic is not automatically neglected in a problematic way.
WHO's approach to research agendas emphasizes explicit priority-setting processes, public-health need, transparent methodology, relevant stakeholders, feasibility, and implementation rather than treating visibility as a substitute for prioritization.
The general lesson is useful outside health research: attention and importance are not synonyms.
Importance Should Not Be Reduced to Study Count Either
Researchers sometimes infer importance from scarcity: “Only three studies exist, so this must be an important gap.”
That reasoning does not follow. Few studies can leave an important uncertainty, but they can also provide a sufficient answer to a narrow question. A large literature can still contain serious uncertainty if the evidence is weak or inconsistent.
Instead of relying on the number of papers, evaluate what the evidence can establish. This is why “few studies have examined this” is not a complete research justification.
Potential Impact Is One Way to Think About Importance
Research prioritization often considers potential impact: what might happen if the research succeeds in reducing the uncertainty?
AHRQ's work on prioritizing health services and primary care research gaps identified potential research impact as one possible criterion, including the likelihood of actionable findings and the possibility of substantial gains in knowledge or practice. It also identified foundational value and timeliness as relevant criteria.
This does not mean every important study must lead immediately to action. Potential impact can include theoretical, methodological, evidential, or practical changes appropriate to the research field.
Importance and Feasibility Are Different
A question can be extremely important but difficult or impossible for your project to answer.
Perhaps the necessary sample is enormous, the required data are inaccessible, the outcome takes decades to observe, or the available design cannot support the intended inference.
Feasibility therefore affects whether a gap is a suitable research priority or project, but it should not be confused with the intrinsic importance of the unresolved question.
The scoping review of research priority-setting methods found feasibility among the criteria used to determine priorities, alongside stakeholder importance and potential value. This reflects the practical need to choose research that can actually produce useful information.

An Important Gap Still Needs an Appropriate Study
Identifying an important gap does not automatically make your proposed study valuable.
Suppose an important question remains unresolved because previous studies have serious measurement problems. If your proposed study uses the same problematic measurement, it may do little to reduce the uncertainty.
The importance of the gap and the usefulness of the study must therefore be evaluated separately.
A strong project connects them: this uncertainty matters, this is why it remains unresolved, and this particular study can generate evidence that addresses the limitation.
Ask What Would Happen Under Different Possible Results
One useful test of importance is to imagine several credible outcomes of the proposed research.
If Result A occurs, what changes? If Result B occurs, what changes? If the study finds little difference or considerable uncertainty, would that still be informative?
If no plausible result would materially affect understanding, evidence, theory, methods, or decisions, the gap may be interesting but low impact.
By contrast, a study is often better justified when several possible results would each clarify a consequential uncertainty.
Importance Can Change Over Time
A low-priority question today can become important later.
A new technology may make an old theoretical question practically relevant. A policy change can create a need for evidence that previously had little use. New findings can make an overlooked mechanism central to explaining conflicting results.
The reverse also happens. A once-important gap may become less important because newer evidence resolves it or because the decision it informed no longer exists.
Research priorities should therefore be revisited rather than treated as permanent.
Do Not Manufacture Importance After Choosing the Study
A common problem in research proposals is selecting a convenient or interesting project first and then searching for increasingly dramatic language to make it sound important.
This can lead to unsupported claims that a minor gap will “transform,” “revolutionize,” or broadly benefit a population even when the study cannot support those implications.
Watch Out
Do not inflate an interesting question into an important one by making consequences your study cannot demonstrate. State the contribution at the scale the evidence supports.
If the study is mainly exploratory, local, descriptive, or foundational, say so. A modest but defensible contribution is stronger than an exaggerated claim of importance.
The Strongest Gaps Often Combine Curiosity and Consequence
You do not have to choose between research that interests you and research that matters.
Many strong projects begin with a question that is intellectually compelling and then survive a second test: answering it would improve something consequential.
That combination can be particularly valuable because curiosity sustains investigation while importance justifies why the investigation deserves resources and attention.
The final question is the one developed in the previous guide: is the research gap actually worth filling?
