Why the Number of Studies Is Not Enough to Establish a Research Gap
Study Count and Evidence Strength Are Different Things
The basic problem with “few studies” is that it counts publications without evaluating what those publications tell us.
Imagine that you find three studies addressing your research question. That number alone does not tell you whether the evidence is adequate. The studies could be large, rigorous, directly relevant, and remarkably consistent. Or they could be small, biased, imprecise, methodologically weak, and focused on populations that differ substantially from the one relevant to your question.
The same study count can therefore describe very different states of knowledge.
Literature-size claim
“Only three studies have examined this question.”
Evidence-gap claim
“The available studies do not provide adequate evidence to resolve this question because of specified limitations.”
The second claim is more informative because it explains what researchers still cannot conclude and why.
There Is No Universal Number of Studies That Creates a Research Gap
There is no general rule that fewer than three, five, ten, or any other number of studies automatically constitutes a research gap.
The amount of evidence needed depends on the research question, study designs, sample sizes, precision, risk of bias, consistency, directness, outcomes, and the type of conclusion researchers are trying to reach.
A framework developed by Robinson, Saldanha, and McKoy for identifying research gaps from systematic reviews illustrates this principle. Instead of defining gaps according to a publication-count threshold, it asks where evidence falls short and why. Its reasons include insufficient or imprecise information, biased information, inconsistency or unknown consistency, and information that does not adequately address the question.
The framework was developed for evidence synthesis rather than as a universal rule for every discipline, but the underlying lesson is broadly useful: the existence of a gap depends on what the evidence can support, not simply how many studies you can count.
Few Studies Can Create Insufficient or Imprecise Evidence
There are situations in which having only a few studies genuinely matters.
Suppose the available studies are individually small. Even if their methods are otherwise reasonable, the evidence may remain too imprecise to distinguish among substantively different conclusions. In that case, limited evidence contributes directly to the uncertainty.
The relevant gap is not merely “only a few studies exist.” It is that the available evidence remains insufficiently precise or extensive to answer an important question with the confidence needed for the intended conclusion or decision.
Observation Only a small number of relevant studies exists.
Evidence assessment The studies contain too few participants, events, observations, or sufficiently precise estimates to resolve the question.
Research gap The current evidence remains insufficient or imprecise for the conclusion that matters.
Research need A suitably designed additional study could materially reduce that uncertainty.
That chain of reasoning is much stronger than simply counting papers.
A Few Strong Studies May Be Enough for Some Questions
The reverse is equally important. A small number of studies does not automatically mean the evidence is inadequate.
If several well-designed studies directly address the question, use appropriate methods, produce precise estimates, and reach compatible conclusions, another nearly identical study may add relatively little. Whether more evidence is useful depends on the remaining uncertainty and the importance of reducing it.
This does not mean that two or three studies are universally sufficient. There is no such rule. It means that study number cannot be interpreted separately from the characteristics and purpose of the evidence.
Many Studies Can Still Leave a Major Research Gap
A large literature can create the opposite illusion: because many papers exist, researchers may assume the question has already been answered.
But numerous studies can share the same limitation. They might all use weak measurements, similar convenience samples, short follow-up periods, inadequate comparison groups, or designs unable to address the question being asked. They may also produce inconsistent findings.
Robinson and colleagues' framework explicitly recognizes biased, inconsistent, insufficient, imprecise, and inappropriate information as reasons evidence can fall short. The framework therefore does not equate a large volume of research with adequate evidence.
This is why weak evidence can sometimes represent a more important research gap than missing evidence.
Quality Matters, but “Quality” Is Not One Simple Score
It is tempting to replace study counting with another shortcut: “the existing studies are low quality.” That can also become vague unless you identify the actual limitations.
Ask what threatens the conclusions. Depending on the question and design, relevant issues might include selection bias, confounding, measurement problems, attrition, inadequate comparison groups, inappropriate analyses, imprecision, or poor alignment between the evidence and the question.
The goal is not to dismiss previous research so that your study appears necessary. It is to identify the particular weaknesses that create uncertainty and determine whether your proposed design can realistically improve on them.
Consistency Matters Alongside Quantity
Three studies pointing in substantially different directions create a different evidential situation from three studies producing compatible findings.
Inconsistency can leave a question unresolved, but even disagreement should not automatically be turned into a gap. Researchers need to examine whether differences in design, population, intervention, exposure, measurement, analysis, setting, or study quality explain the apparent conflict.
If meaningful disagreement remains after those factors are considered, conflicting findings may constitute a genuine research gap.
Relevance Matters as Much as Quantity
Studies can be methodologically strong yet provide the wrong information for your particular question.
Suppose several rigorous studies evaluate an intervention against no intervention, but the real decision is whether to choose that intervention or a widely used alternative. The existing studies may establish that the intervention has an effect without answering the comparison that researchers, clinicians, policymakers, or other decision-makers actually need.
In that case, the issue is not primarily that there are too few studies. It is that the available evidence does not adequately address the relevant comparison.
A similar issue can arise with outcomes, populations, exposures, settings, or follow-up periods. Evidence must be judged in relation to the question it is supposed to answer.
A Small Literature Can Be Appropriate for a Narrow or Low-Priority Question
Sometimes few studies exist because relatively little research attention has been devoted to the question. That observation may prompt a useful investigation, but it does not establish that the neglect is a problem.
There are countless unanswered or rarely studied questions. Research resources are finite. A small literature becomes a stronger justification when the unanswered question has theoretical, practical, clinical, policy, methodological, or other substantive importance.
This distinction separates a merely interesting research gap from an important one.
“Few Studies” Can Hide a Poorly Defined Search
Before interpreting a small number of search results as evidence of a gap, examine the search itself.
You may have used terminology that is too narrow. The same concept may be described differently across disciplines. Relevant research may investigate the underlying question without using your preferred keyword. Database coverage, date restrictions, language restrictions, document types, and inclusion criteria can also affect how many studies you identify.
Watch Out
“I found only three studies” describes the outcome of your search, not necessarily the entire state of the evidence. Before using scarcity as a research justification, make sure the small number is not primarily an artifact of your search strategy.
A careful search is therefore part of determining whether the proposed gap is genuine.
More Research Is Not Automatically Better Research
Once a small evidence base is identified, the next question is not simply whether another study can be added. It is whether the proposed study will meaningfully improve the evidence.
If three existing studies have the same methodological weakness and the fourth repeats it, the publication count increases while the underlying uncertainty may change very little.
A better justification explains what the proposed study contributes: greater precision, a stronger design, a missing comparison, better measurement, independent replication, longer follow-up, a theoretically important test, evidence from a materially different context, or another improvement directly connected to the identified limitation.
Research Should Be Justified Against What Is Already Known
In clinical health research, meta-research has found that systematic reviews are still inconsistently used to justify new research questions, raising concerns about potentially redundant research. This finding comes from a particular research domain, but it illustrates a wider principle: new studies should be considered in relation to the existing body of evidence rather than justified solely by an isolated statement that the literature is small.
That does not mean every project in every discipline requires a formal systematic review. The appropriate level of literature review depends on the study and field. It does mean that a claim such as “few studies exist” should result from serious engagement with the relevant evidence.
Scarcity and Importance Are Separate Questions
Even after confirming that only a few relevant studies exist and that important uncertainty remains, one more question remains: is reducing that uncertainty worth doing?

Before proceeding, evaluate whether filling the research gap would actually matter.
