Are Some Reasons for Doing Research Better Than Others?
Ask researchers why they conduct research and the answers can be strikingly different. One person may be fascinated by an unanswered question. Another may want to solve a problem affecting a community. Someone else may need publications for promotion, a stronger curriculum vitae for an application, or research outputs required by an institution.
These reasons are often described as intrinsic or extrinsic motivation. The distinction seems simple: intrinsic motivation comes from enjoying or valuing the activity itself, while extrinsic motivation involves pursuing an outcome that is separable from the activity. Yet motivation research, particularly self-determination theory, makes the picture more complicated.
Extrinsic motivation is not one uniform category, and researchers rarely operate with only one motive. Understanding the difference therefore requires asking not merely whether a motivation comes from inside or outside the researcher, but how willingly and personally the researcher endorses the reason for doing the work.

The distinction matters because different forms of motivation can shape engagement, persistence, choices, and responses to incentives. However, extrinsic motivation is not automatically harmful: self-determination theory distinguishes relatively autonomous forms of extrinsic motivation from forms driven mainly by external control or pressure.

Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation Are More Nuanced Than They Sound
Intrinsic Motivation Comes From the Activity Itself
In self-determination theory, intrinsic motivation refers to engaging in an activity for its inherent interest, enjoyment, or satisfaction. Applied to research, a researcher might investigate a question because discovering the answer is intellectually exciting, because they enjoy solving difficult methodological problems, or because the process of inquiry itself is satisfying.
The defining feature is not that the motive is morally admirable. It is that the activity is rewarding in itself rather than being performed principally as an instrument for obtaining a separate outcome.
For example, curiosity can support intrinsic motivation when someone conducts a study because they genuinely want to know what the evidence will reveal. The researcher may still publish the results later. Receiving an external reward does not retroactively make the original curiosity extrinsic.
Extrinsic Motivation Is Instrumental
Extrinsic motivation refers to doing an activity because it leads to an outcome separable from the activity itself. A researcher may conduct research because a degree requires it, because publications affect promotion, because research performance influences employment evaluation, or because a grant provides resources and professional opportunities.
This is where the everyday interpretation can become misleading. Extrinsic does not simply mean that somebody else is forcing you to do something. Some extrinsically motivated activities can be personally valued and willingly undertaken.
Intrinsic motivation
I conduct this research because I find the inquiry itself interesting or satisfying.
Extrinsic motivation
I conduct this research because doing so helps produce another outcome that I value, need, or feel pressured to obtain.
Extrinsic Motivation Can Range From Controlled to Autonomous
Self-determination theory distinguishes several forms of extrinsic regulation according to the extent to which the reason for acting has been internalized. This means the useful question is not simply, “Is this intrinsic or extrinsic?” It is also, “How autonomous is this motivation?”

Behavior is primarily controlled by external rewards, requirements, or punishments.
“I am doing this because I need the publication for my performance evaluation.”
The terminology matters because two researchers can pursue the same visible outcome while experiencing very different motivation. Completing a dissertation is an external requirement in the sense that a degree depends on it. Yet one doctoral student may personally value becoming capable of independent research, while another may experience the project almost entirely as an imposed hurdle.
Intrinsic Does Not Mean Internal and Extrinsic Does Not Simply Mean External
A common shortcut is to equate intrinsic motivation with anything that comes “from within” and extrinsic motivation with anything imposed “from outside.” That is too crude.
Someone who publishes mainly because failing to do so would make them feel ashamed may experience the pressure internally, but the behavior remains instrumentally motivated. Conversely, a researcher may pursue an externally recognizable outcome, such as professional qualification, because they have personally accepted its importance.
Self-determination theory therefore focuses on the degree of self-determination underlying behavior rather than merely locating the apparent source of the pressure.
Researchers Commonly Have Multiple Motives at the Same Time
A researcher might be deeply curious about a phenomenon, believe that studying it could benefit others, enjoy working with collaborators, want to complete a doctorate, need publications for promotion, and hope the project attracts funding. There is no requirement that one motive cancel the others.
This is why the distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic rewards from research should not be treated as a test of whether someone's motives are pure. Real research careers exist inside systems of employment, funding, assessment, professional recognition, and institutional expectations.
Why the Quality of Motivation May Matter
Research on self-determination theory generally distinguishes autonomous motivation, in which behavior is experienced as more volitional and personally endorsed, from controlled motivation, in which behavior is more strongly shaped by pressure or contingencies.
Evidence specifically concerning researchers is still more limited than the broader motivation literature, so sweeping conclusions should be avoided. Nevertheless, studies in academic contexts suggest that motivational quality can be associated with research engagement and outcomes.
For example, a multi-institution study of 651 STEM faculty members found that autonomous motivation, represented by enjoyment and valuing research, was the strongest motivational predictor of self-reported research productivity as well as publication and citation outcomes in the study's models. This is an association within a particular sample and research design, not evidence that intrinsic or autonomous motivation mechanically causes productive research in every setting.
A study of medical students similarly found that both intrinsic and extrinsic reasons were present among students considering research participation. Extrinsic motivation was associated with greater extracurricular research engagement in that sample, illustrating why it would be inaccurate to assume that external incentives simply prevent people from participating in research.
Extrinsic Rewards Are Not Automatically the Problem
Publications, promotion, recognition, funding, qualifications, and employment are real features of academic and professional life. Wanting them is not inherently inconsistent with responsible scholarship. In many cases, incentives help people initiate difficult activities, sustain effort, or direct attention toward socially or institutionally valued goals.
The more consequential question is what happens when a reward becomes so dominant that researchers begin optimizing for the reward rather than for credible inquiry. Publication pressure, for example, may become problematic if researchers feel compelled to maximize the number of papers regardless of whether dividing work into multiple publications improves scientific communication.
The U.S. Office of Research Integrity notes that competition for funding and recognition can create considerable pressure to publish and cautions that publication quantity is often used as a measure of productivity even though quality should matter more. Such observations do not establish that extrinsic motivation itself causes misconduct. They do show why incentive structures deserve attention.
Watch Out
Do not infer unethical behavior merely because a researcher is motivated by promotion, funding, recognition, or publication. Research integrity concerns arise from what researchers actually do and from the environments that shape those choices, not from the mere existence of an external reward.
Motivation and Rewards Are Related but Different Concepts
A reward is something obtained or experienced as a consequence of research. Motivation concerns why someone initiates or persists in the activity. The same reward can therefore have different motivational significance for different people.
A publication, for instance, might be valued because it communicates findings to a scholarly community, because it contributes to promotion, because completing it provides a sense of accomplishment, or because all of these are true simultaneously. Separating the reasons for doing research from the rewards attached to research makes these distinctions easier to see.
04 · A Practical Example
The Same Research Project Can Be Motivated in Different Ways
Hypothetical Example
Four Researchers Join the Same Project
Imagine four early-career academics joining a study on student learning. They perform similar research tasks, but their reasons for participating differ.
Researcher A: intrinsic motivation “I keep thinking about this question. I want to know why the students respond differently to the two approaches.”
Researcher B: identified regulation “I do not enjoy every part of data collection, but becoming capable of evaluating teaching interventions matters to my work as an educator.”
Researcher C: introjected regulation “Everyone in my department seems to be publishing. I will feel like I am falling behind if I do not produce something this year.”
Researcher D: external regulation “My contract requires a research output, so I need this paper for my evaluation.”
The observable behavior may initially look similar: all four researchers attend meetings, collect data, analyze findings, and help prepare a manuscript. Their underlying regulation, however, differs.
Nothing in this example tells us automatically who will produce the best research. Researcher D may be meticulous and ethical despite being externally motivated, while Researcher A could be enthusiastic but methodologically careless. Motivation can influence behavior, but it does not substitute for competence, resources, methodological rigor, ethical conduct, or appropriate supervision.
06 · What This Means for You
Examine How Your Motivations Are Shaping Your Research Choices
You do not need to eliminate extrinsic motives before your research can be worthwhile. A more useful exercise is to identify what is driving the work and consider whether those motives support or interfere with sound research decisions.
A simple motivation check
If you would investigate the question because you find the inquiry itself fascinating
Intrinsic motivation is probably an important part of your reason for doing the work.
If you do not particularly enjoy the activity but believe it is personally important
Your motivation may still be relatively autonomous even though the activity is instrumentally motivated.
If your main thought is “I have to do this or I will be penalized”
Controlled or externally regulated motivation is likely playing a substantial role. Consider whether the pressure is influencing your research choices.
If publications, recognition, promotion, or funding are important to you
Acknowledge those incentives rather than pretending they do not matter, then check whether they are creating conflicts with methodological rigor, transparent reporting, or the value of the question.
This reflection becomes especially important in environments where researchers face strong institutional targets. Institutional pressure can change why researchers engage in research , sometimes turning an activity that was previously self-directed into one experienced primarily as an obligation.
The goal is not motivational purity. It is greater awareness of how the reasons behind your research may influence the decisions you make while conducting it.

When reflecting on your research motivation, ask:
Would I still find this question worth investigating if there were no immediate publication or recognition attached to it?
Which parts of the research do I find inherently interesting or satisfying?
Which outcomes am I pursuing because they lead to qualifications, promotion, funding, recognition, employment, or another separable benefit?
Which external requirements have I personally accepted as important, and which do I experience mainly as pressure?
Am I choosing the research question because it is worth answering or primarily because it is easier to convert into a rewarded output?
Would losing a particular reward substantially change my willingness to continue this research?
Are publication, promotion, recognition, funding, or institutional requirements influencing methodological or reporting decisions?
Can I pursue legitimate professional rewards without compromising the scientific and ethical standards of the work?
